open 🌸 early evening, everywhere
[With temperatures slowly dropping and days turning into night at earlier and earlier hours, it's probably not a surprise when more signs of winter start to manifest in the coming days, not quite fully there but close. Traces of ice that aren't quite snow, chilly winds, and overcast days. Definitely a shift from the sunny opportunities of magical dates and the like.

With all that, of course, there's the need for those warmer clothes to keep the cold at bay, and likewise an increase chance of finding them among the shops and bazaar. Thicker, warmer coats to put on, mittens and hats, supplies to help with the ice, or maybe you're just looking to restock on hot-cocoa for home. Today certainly seems like one of those days for it.

It's not so bad that braving the outside is out of the question, either, of course - if you like this sort of weather, it might even make for a nice walk, with the right attire and maybe a hand to hold to keep warm. For those that might prefer staying in, huddling up instead... it's a perfect excuse too.]

[The touch this time makes him close his eyes, a shaky breath drawn out by it, hitched softly. Light as it is, he has to try not to tremble more, bites back a sound. He's not so much surprised this time as a little overwhelmed, all the different emotions that he can't control in either direction making conflict curl around inside him.]

I don't get it. I should be the one saying that. [It eventually comes out as a small grumble, trying to seem casual or not a big deal, and not like he wants to fight about it. If he's ever verbalized this, at most it was with Shiro in the long nights when they'd hang out together past lights out, whenever things got quieter enough that they'd admit things no one else has ever heard them say. And maybe it's like that now, for Keith, a quiet admission in a space that's both familiar and entirely unknown.]

My life wasn't exactly much of anything before. ["I wasn't" is the feeling he keeps inside even still.]

[It's things like this that break his heart, of course-- it did back then, too, but now it's so much worse, somehow compounded in his chest as he looks at him, quiet as he speaks and not wanting to interrupt even as he wants to banish that way of thinking forever.]

I know it hasn't been easy for you, Keith. But look at you. You're still trying. You haven't given up. [His hand returns to his hair, gently stroking for a moment before cupping his head and guiding him up to look at him, smiling at him.]

You can say you're better for having met me, too, but that doesn't change the fact that you've done more for me than you'll ever know. And I'm always going to be grateful for that, that we got to meet.

[Likely the most blatantly he's said it-- before, he might have cushioned it with humor or the like, but he's nothing but earnest now as he looks at him, his expression fond even as he understands that, likely, he's overwhelming the poor guy far too much. But he means it.]

You're so important to me.

[Despite everything, when Shiro guides his face up, Keith doesn't resist it, so the first thing he probably sees are his eyes looking up at him so much wider, not quite tearful but almost like that, brimming with feeling instead. Even more so at the way he's looking at him, smiling at him. It's so much.]

Shiro...

[He doesn't know what to say. It's one thing to be aware he matters to someone, to know Shiro cares about him, but it's still not something he's ever been used to hearing or believing fully yet.]

[His reaction does little to curb the heartbreak he feels, watching him like this-- but, well. He knows Keith has a long road ahead of him. It isn't as if Keith doesn't still react like this, too, sometimes. But even so, he keeps his touch light where he holds him, not breaking his eyes away from him as he nods in response to the sound of his name. He knows it's a lot. But it's important that he says it, after sitting on it for so long-- after assuming that Keith knew because he expressed it in actions rather than words. But he knows better now how important the words are, too.]

Keith. You're my best friend. Never forget that.

[In so many ways, Shiro's actions saved him just as much as his words ever did, every step and effort that he made for Keith never once gone unnoticed, held dear to him. He did know, but at the same time... he let the unspoken go just as much too, didn't know how to want for more. How to consider himself worth more, too, for so long.

Yet, I love you. All he can think is he can't even remember the the last time he heard those words said to him in such an earnest way, even his father's voice a far away memory, and from Shiro now it... he stops, stares at him, at a loss, floored.]

I'm-

[Him too. He wants to say it, but that also threatens to unearth the other rush of feelings those words ignite words so completely that - he can't manage it either way, something like frustration flickering across his face.]

[He clings, doesn't let go for anything now.]

I -- [It feels kind of pathetic, getting this worked up, and everything he can't fully manage in turn, but he's happy too, undeniably. There's something of a mix of that feeling and his fondness, his love, for Shiro all in the quiet tone of his voice when he can push words again.]

I'm really glad we're best friends.

[He smiles and nods, not lessening his hold on him for a single moment.]

Me too, Keith.

[He runs his hand down his back and back up into his hair, curling his fingers. Cradling him close. Trying to pour all that love, all that pride, all that admiration he feels into the gesture, keeping him close.]

Me too. Always.

[He knows Keith's feelings. He can hear it now, in a way he couldn't back then-- that he can recognize now with the experience and hindsight. It pains him a little, to think he could have missed it when he was younger-- knew Keith cared, but never could fathom to what extent, or what hearing such words would mean to him, in any context.]

Yeah. [Nods a couple of times, tentative but honest, sounding a little watery still.] Yeah, always.

[He closes his eyes, lets himself feel everything Shiro seems to be trying to express to him, understanding the effort of it, even though he couldn't begin to fathom the full extent of where those feelings run now. The shaky exhale that leaves him this time is less on edge, but somehow no less overcome anyway, from those very feelings, from the gentleness of his gestures. Like this, he feels utterly surrounded in it, and it's so much.]

I - won't forget.

Slowly, he starts to relax more, resting on him like that, comforted as much as it might overwhelm, it's - not a bad feeling in this case. He feels his heart flop around in his chest, stupidly, even though he doesn't tense or think about moving away for a moment - even his arms around his shoulders continue to stay wrapped around him, clinging less but draped on his shoulders still. Anyway... it's fine. At least for a few long moments where they stay like that, it feels like it could be fine like this forever. The thought quickly starts to feel greedy when he lingers on it.]

[Looks up when he can tell Shiro's tilting his head, almost instinctively following suit, a tiny wrinkle in his nose at the tug. To his credit, he asks more as curious of the logistics than existential distress.]

D'you think it'll be okay that I'm here? I mean, I don't know how this future stuff all works, but... [And if his older self is around too, or your mysterious ~friend~ or whatever else. His shoulders shrug a little.] Might be weird.

Hmmm... [He considers the question carefully, tilting his head. He keeps playing with Keith's hair, more absently than anything else, just wanting to casually touch him nbd.]

I think it'll be okay. Future stuff is... weird. But this place kind of exists outside its own time, so it won't affect anything. [...] If it's weird, we'll just be weird together. It's just you and me for now, if that's alright.
