[ Kirk looked up, blinking at the little thing and wondering how it was they inspired such... well, it wasn't really anger was it? More like frustrated tolerance? Demanding little things. He looked to Ianto and his mouth twitched into a smile as he came closer. ]

Not exactly how I imagined a first kiss with you.

You'd be surprised how many first kisses I've had this way. [Spike comes to mind although they were both too busy shouting at each other to make much of it at the time.

Even before that comment he knew Kirk wasn't the type who would be satisfied with a quick peck to get this over with, even if the bot would accept that. So he decides not to wait for the barrier to force them together and steps closer to place his hands on his hips and pull him in for a proper kiss.]

[ Normally, no, but Kirk wasn't an ass. He would have taken what Ianto would give, but in this case it really wasn't their choice was it? It felt strange, being graded on the passion of a kiss, but nothing in this place made sense now did it? After all, two days ago everyone had been two decades older than him.

He didn't fight when Ianto brought him closer, winding his fingers around Ianto's tie and the small of his back. With Ianto initiating he felt no need to hold back as he pressed against Ianto's lips, humming quietly as his tongue sparked with the faintest taste of the ingenious coffee maker. ]

[With as long as he's been here and as many times as he's taken part in this particular event Ianto has long ago stopped being bothered by it. Everyone is in this day together, so there's no point in overthinking things or worrying about how other people might take it.

It's a nice kiss, one that he puts some effort into making good. He likes Kirk, and he'd probably enjoy this more without the doubts and unhappiness of the last two days hanging over him. Even so, he lets the kiss continue a moment or two longer after the confetti rains down on them and the barrier disappears.]

[ He doesn't fight when Ianto pulls back or go for another, despite wanting to. Ianto was a good kisser, and he had the nice, bitter taste of coffee about him. He reached up to brush the confetti from his hair, laughing softly. ]

I don't think I've ever been applauded for the way I kiss before.

[He'll get one more kiss for brushing the confetti away, brief and sweet and meant to make it clear there are no hard feelings here and he enjoyed it.]

Personally I've always thought the confetti is a bit much. [The faintest pause as he debates whether or not to change subjects then decides to go for it. No time like the present after all.]

I've actually been wanting to talk to you. I think I owe you an explanation, what with everything going on with Jack these past few days. And likely an apology as well.

[ Not that he had thought there were, but it was still nice, making him smile. Only to turn a touch into confusion when Ianto mentions an apology. ]

Oh... well, all right if you think it's necessary.

[ He glanced around them, thinking this might require someplace to sit. ]

Coffee?

No need to look so terrified, you're not in trouble. And coffee always gets you on my good side. [If anything Ianto feels like the one who needs to do the apologizing.

They're closer to the Dive but he heads towards the Bean Crusher instead.]
I just felt badly about you being caught up in the middle of all this.

[ Coffee made a lot of things better. But he suddenly had a hankering for something more. Did they have pie? Pie made a lot of things better. ]

Am I? The last I knew I was being hurried out of Jack's apartment and that was the end of it.

[They've got pastries. Not as good as Chuck's pie but he avoids her resturant for a different set of complicated reasons because his life is rediculous and dramatic.]

[ Kirk had heard about what happened at Chuck's place. He wasn't as bothered by it, but then he had not been there so it was easier to remain removed and just enjoy the delicious coffee and pie. Besides, it seemed to make Chuck happy, so he was always happy to use her place as his usual coffee hang out. ]

He didn't really have to. I put it together myself pretty quick. The morning before the blue and wasn't there, and this morning it was. He told me what they meant, so the situation has obviously changed. And he wasn't twenty years old anymore either. I figured he needed to go deal with something related to the bands most likely.

[ A casual shrug as they sat and waited for their order. ]

What happened in that future, I know it wasn't real but it's still difficult to sort out. Mostly I just wanted to make sure you knew it was our problem, not something you caused.

[It seems like so much to try to explain, and he's never been particularly good at discussing his relationships to begin with.] It's got nothing to do with him sleeping with someone else, and insupposeninjust wanted to make sure you knew that.

[ Kirk sipped his coffee as he listened. It was all a right mess wasn't it? This place played mind games and watched them scramble to put pieces back together. Thankfully he didn't have quite the same issues, but he had to wonder if this couldn't be used as a giant middle finger to the wardens about this nonsense of committed relationships having less drama. ]

Ah, thank you.

[ He had never thought it was his fault, but that sounded bitchy even in his head. ]

Did you two manage to sort things out?

[He pauses before answering, fidgeting with his cup of coffee which is really an answer in itself. That artificial future uncovered a lot of things that they've spent a lot of time trying very hard to ignore and, predictably, neither of them handled it well.]

No, we didn't. I suppose it's a work in progress. We've never been the best at talking about things, and it was getting complicated between us before all this.

[ On one level, Kirk knew he shouldn't stick his nose in it. It wasn't any of his business and by all rights he could turn it from awkward tension to raging tire fire. But he was also a captain, and a nosy one, and he liked both of these men, which made him feel slightly responsible for them. It made watching them stumble over their own feet rather painful, to say the least. He was practically sympathy wincing. ]

I can't say how much sage advice I have, but I'm a good listener. So if you want to talk about it, maybe get an outside perspective, I'm willing.

Coffee should be drunk slowly anyways.

[ A suggestive cup waggle followed by a slow, loud sip. ]

I assure you I know how to drink coffee. [A faint smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, but seriously, don't lecture him about coffee. He takes it very seriously.

He considers politely declining because he's never liked sharing personal things and this is about as personal as it gets but he likes Kirk and it's true, he doesn't really have an outsiders perspective at all. Kitty and Spike are both too deeply invested in it all at this point and his list of other friends is getting short. So he's slow and hesitant as he answers but he doesn't shut the conversation down entirely.]

I suppose it's the fact that we're not good at communicating that bothers me. I know that if these bands weren't here he'd involve himself with other people. I know he did it before we arrived but it feels different knowing everyone else here, knowing it's people I can compare myself with and see what I seem to be lacking. But I can never seem to find quite the right way to explain that or have him understand it. Cultural differences, I suppose. Add in some lingering guilt about complicating things by sleeping with Spike and it made it hard to say anything to him until it was too late.

[A pause then a belated realization.] And it just occurs to me you likely didn't know Spike was involved in all of this. I'd forgotten there were people who don't. Incidentally as a word of advice don't violate a blue band agreement with someone else; they have a nasty habit of making a very public announcement about it if you do.

[ Kirk let's him get things out at his own pace, sipping quieter and occasionally taking a bite of pie. His eyebrows raise at the mention of Spike, but again doesn't interrupt. When the other finishes speaking he is quiet, turning over Ianto's concerns and weighing his own words. The silence is filled by the sound of his fingers tapping against his mug. ]

What I'm about to say is in no way an accusation or placing blame. But you say you have problems communicating your concerns with Jack sleeping with others, that it makes feel like you're somehow lacking. But you've also admitted that you slept with Spike - who suggested I actually meet Jack by the way. And you've carried on the relationship with a Spike and Jack at the same time.

I think you should consider why you went to a Spike in the first place. Why you continue with him. It's not because you don't love or care about Jack - you clearly do. But it also seems like Spike fulfills you in a way different from the way Jack fulfills you. This doesn't mean Jack is lacking. It just means he and Spike offer you something unique in their own ways. And maybe, like you, Jack believes he too is lacking when that's not true.

If it were me - I would think this way. I would want you to be fulfilled and recognize that I can't possible do so in every way. No one can. That's the nature of being - well, a living creature. You love a person for what they can offer you, and accept their flaws because that's who they are. So it's not that you lack anything, Ianto - he cares very much about you, even I can see that. It's just that sometimes he - men like him and myself - we need something... other.

I know it probably counts for shit all coming from me, but that's how I see it. Just seems like neither of you has gotten around to vocalizing that.

[ A pause to wet his throat and a cough. ]

That's my first two cents anyways.

[He laughs dryly, without any humor in it.]

You sound just like Jack, you know. I've heard all that from him more times than I can count and if I'm completely honest you're entirely right. I understand it, especially since everything happened with Spike. It's not him sleeping with anyone else that bothers me, is that it was everyone else.

[There's the problem right there. It's not some stranger in a bar in Cardiff he can pretend he didn't know about. It's a long list of friends slowly and systematically being explored. It's hard to look someone he cares about in the eyes knowing they're just the latest addition to that list.]

And honestly the fight we had in that future - or thought we had, I suppose - wasn't about that at all, not really. Or the one here. It bothers me more that I don't feel like I can tell him any of what I just said. The way we started out was complicated and he was always my boss first back home before he was anything else. It's a hard dynamic to change, especially given I keep my problems to myself and he works very hard to keep the world at arms length.

[ Well, Spike had said they were alike. Maybe more than either he or Jack knew.

He lets Ianto talk at his pace again, motioning for another coffee subtly - and some more pie. More pie was always welcome in conversations like these. ]

Hmmm. Well, I can't speak precisely to Jack's perspective, but I can a little bit. In my own world, I'm in a position of power, so to speak. I'm a captain, which I think I've told you. I don't get involved with my crew for reasons like this - because it could be construed as an abuse of my power, but also because I don't know that I could ever divorce myself my role as their protector and their leader - that is, their boss.

And from what I understand, Jack's reasons for that distance are... complex but understandable.

[ He leaned back in his seat, looking up at the ceiling for a moment and then back to Ianto. ]

This might sound strange, but - what if you tried restarting?

[ He pointed at the band. ]

Dissolve that. Or at the least suspend it. You two have to begin from the beginning, getting to know each other as equals, not as former boss and employee. Right now, you may never achieve equal footing - which isn't fair, especially to you.

It may be that you need to try and approach this a new way, with a cleaner slate. It won't erase the past you've shared, but it might 'reset' the way you both approach your feelings and the way you view each other within the relationship.

[ A sip of coffee and another bite of pie to let that sink in. ]

If that's to drastic, you could try writing how you feel. Practice, basically. Maybe hand him what you've written, or read it. It will give you time to properly form what it is you do want to say, pick the right words that you can't always do in a conversation.

[It's not a bad suggestion, even if his immediate reaction is to deny it. But in a way it is the same thing he was trying to say to Jack the other day. They need to change the way they do this. They were never supposed to be long term, they both knew that and then they started on unequal footing when they got here, and Jack got him back after losing him. Of course he was going to throw himself into a second chance, an opportunity to redeem himself and maybe that made this whole thing become too serious, too quickly. It feels like they've never sat down and takes out how the basis of all this is supposed to work.]

As much as I hate to admit it you may have a point. We never thought this was going to become as serious as it did and I feel like that's all begining to catch up with us now. [A particularly dry smile over the rim of his mug.] I was never supposed to live long enough for either of us to have to worry about this sort of thing.

[Even without knowing what he does now that statement is still true. He knew going into all this how short the lives of Torchwood employees tend to be. This was all just supposed to be sex and then it slowly became something more when neither of them were looking and now here they are. There is a bit more humor in his voice as he continues though.]

I'd say you're right about the writtting suggestion except for the fact that I know perfectly well he reads my diary and none of it has sunken in yet.

[ Considering what Ianto had told him of his job before, he thus got the idea that life expectancy was not overly long. That, and he knew Jack was long-lived, to say the least. Combine the two and yeah, he could see where they both had the idea of never making it to this point. Guess that assumption got dashed what with being in prison and this not being their real bodies and all. ]

Then I think it's something that would be good for you. You don't have to stop with Spike, but I would definitely say suspending your blue-band relationship, even getting rid of it so neither of you is tempted, with Jack and you two starting from the beginning - dates, getting to know one another, building things up at a more comfortable speed and just letting both you be who you are without these other expectations thrown in.

[ He could be talking shit. Kirk knew he wasn't the sort of person to really be giving sage advice on relationships when he had never had a long term one himself, but he was good at reading people and at building other types of relationships. This one just had sex involved. ]

Well that's not nice. Want me to give it a security upgrade?

[It sounds nice, like the sort of thing they really should do even if he knows Spike will chew him out for it. Even if he suspects they'll never mange it. There are so many emotions and messes all tangled up where the two of them are concerned that even if stepping away and starting fresh sounds right he's not sure he trusts either of them to handle it properly.]

Thank you for being honest about it. I feel like ever since things began with Spike my love life has been so entirely in the spotlight here. Even people who don't know me heard the announcement and suddenly had an opinion on everything. It's nice to be able to talk to someone who doesn't have an opinion colored by all that.

[He's tired of all the drama, which is unfortunate given how much of it seems to find him.]

Not necessary. I just leave the occasional disparaging remark to make him uncomfortable about it.

Well, I just hope what I've said has been of help. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the first person I think anyone would come to for relationship advice. I've never really had a serious romantic one, if I'm honest. It's just never been something I've been interested in. So take what I've said with a grain of salt. But I do think it will help. When something's not working, you break it down to its basic parts and build it again.

If you ever want to talk about something else, I'll listen then too. Impartial ear and all that. Just bring the coffee.

[ Not throw away or give up - rebuild. He doesn't think either of them can actually give the other up anyways, but there are obviously parts that aren't working in with what they have. ]

Heh, serves him right. What person goes through another's diary of all things? That's beyond being nosy.

Careful, I may take you up on that offer. [It seems like a lot of his friends in this place have slowly disappeared and he's never the most outgoing at the best of times. Maybe he should make more of an effort to reach out to people. This seems like a good start.]

Exactly. Just like it would be beyond nosy for me to try and find out who else you've kissed today. [His face betrays nothing but that perfect bland innocence he's so good at when he wants to be.]

I'm known to be rather reckless, so I'll take the risk.

[ Ianto sounded like he needed a friend, a friend who wasn't going to judge him on his mistakes and his past. God, Kirk knew he had made worse ones in his life, and it's not like judging Ianto actually helped him.

He laughs at the other's question, wagging his fork at him. ]

It would be, it would be. Buuut I'll give you a hint. One had a mask.
