[It's not a bad suggestion, even if his immediate reaction is to deny it. But in a way it is the same thing he was trying to say to Jack the other day. They need to change the way they do this. They were never supposed to be long term, they both knew that and then they started on unequal footing when they got here, and Jack got him back after losing him. Of course he was going to throw himself into a second chance, an opportunity to redeem himself and maybe that made this whole thing become too serious, too quickly. It feels like they've never sat down and takes out how the basis of all this is supposed to work.]

As much as I hate to admit it you may have a point. We never thought this was going to become as serious as it did and I feel like that's all begining to catch up with us now. [A particularly dry smile over the rim of his mug.] I was never supposed to live long enough for either of us to have to worry about this sort of thing.

[Even without knowing what he does now that statement is still true. He knew going into all this how short the lives of Torchwood employees tend to be. This was all just supposed to be sex and then it slowly became something more when neither of them were looking and now here they are. There is a bit more humor in his voice as he continues though.]

I'd say you're right about the writtting suggestion except for the fact that I know perfectly well he reads my diary and none of it has sunken in yet.

[ Considering what Ianto had told him of his job before, he thus got the idea that life expectancy was not overly long. That, and he knew Jack was long-lived, to say the least. Combine the two and yeah, he could see where they both had the idea of never making it to this point. Guess that assumption got dashed what with being in prison and this not being their real bodies and all. ]

Then I think it's something that would be good for you. You don't have to stop with Spike, but I would definitely say suspending your blue-band relationship, even getting rid of it so neither of you is tempted, with Jack and you two starting from the beginning - dates, getting to know one another, building things up at a more comfortable speed and just letting both you be who you are without these other expectations thrown in.

[ He could be talking shit. Kirk knew he wasn't the sort of person to really be giving sage advice on relationships when he had never had a long term one himself, but he was good at reading people and at building other types of relationships. This one just had sex involved. ]

Well that's not nice. Want me to give it a security upgrade?

[It sounds nice, like the sort of thing they really should do even if he knows Spike will chew him out for it. Even if he suspects they'll never mange it. There are so many emotions and messes all tangled up where the two of them are concerned that even if stepping away and starting fresh sounds right he's not sure he trusts either of them to handle it properly.]

Thank you for being honest about it. I feel like ever since things began with Spike my love life has been so entirely in the spotlight here. Even people who don't know me heard the announcement and suddenly had an opinion on everything. It's nice to be able to talk to someone who doesn't have an opinion colored by all that.

[He's tired of all the drama, which is unfortunate given how much of it seems to find him.]

Not necessary. I just leave the occasional disparaging remark to make him uncomfortable about it.

Well, I just hope what I've said has been of help. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the first person I think anyone would come to for relationship advice. I've never really had a serious romantic one, if I'm honest. It's just never been something I've been interested in. So take what I've said with a grain of salt. But I do think it will help. When something's not working, you break it down to its basic parts and build it again.

If you ever want to talk about something else, I'll listen then too. Impartial ear and all that. Just bring the coffee.

[ Not throw away or give up - rebuild. He doesn't think either of them can actually give the other up anyways, but there are obviously parts that aren't working in with what they have. ]

Heh, serves him right. What person goes through another's diary of all things? That's beyond being nosy.

Careful, I may take you up on that offer. [It seems like a lot of his friends in this place have slowly disappeared and he's never the most outgoing at the best of times. Maybe he should make more of an effort to reach out to people. This seems like a good start.]

Exactly. Just like it would be beyond nosy for me to try and find out who else you've kissed today. [His face betrays nothing but that perfect bland innocence he's so good at when he wants to be.]

I'm known to be rather reckless, so I'll take the risk.

[ Ianto sounded like he needed a friend, a friend who wasn't going to judge him on his mistakes and his past. God, Kirk knew he had made worse ones in his life, and it's not like judging Ianto actually helped him.

He laughs at the other's question, wagging his fork at him. ]

It would be, it would be. Buuut I'll give you a hint. One had a mask.

[For his part Kirk reminds him a bit of Jack. That same sense of someone who isolates themselves because of what they do, not because they enjoy it. It makes it easy to want to connect with him, seeing that.

The clue gets a smile from him and another sip of his coffee. He hasn't actually met Deadpool but he's aware of who he is. A bit hard to miss, really.]
In that case I suppose the real question is whether you kissed him with the mask on or off.

[ He didn't have much choice in that matter. He was the leader, the captain. There would always be that gap between himself and others. Not because he wanted it, but because it naturally existed - this space others could not cross. Because he made those life and death decisions, because he bore burdens so that the others would not have to. Because he always feared that connection was not sincere - not because he doubted people, but because he doubted the natural influence of his position.

As for his mystery kisser - it wasn't Deadpool, yet. He would kiss him later. No, he had another masked man run in - Spiderman, to be precise. ]

The bots don't let you get away with masks.

[There's too many masks in this place. Sounds like something he needs to make a highly organized list about.]

I should have guessed they liked to see everything. I gather that the people running this place rather enjoy keeping tabs on everyone.

And knowing what a model of restraint you are I'm sure I can safely assume that was your only other kiss.

Well, I at least had to actually kiss his lips. Didn't get more than that, so it's all still a mystery.

[ He waved/waggled his fingers in the universal sign of magic and spooky. ]

Are you suggesting I purposely entrap people, Mr. Jones?

[ He pressed a hand to his heart in mock affront. ]

It's like some sort of bizarre Cinderella scenario where you'll have to match kissing styles to the culprit until they're identified.

[That accusation gets a dry, unflappable look from him.]

Yes, I suppose I am. Unless I'm wrong?

Please, you underestimate. I could do it by the shape of their lips alone.

[ Honestly, Ianto, what do you take him for? A cad? ]

I didn't know how the things worked until this morning. But I'm not very sorry for having to kiss you either. So, no, not entirely wrong.

Careful, that sounds like the sort of statement that could come back to haunt you later.

[Nonsense. He's clearly a perfect gentleman.]

Well if that's the case I look forward to encountering you next mistletoe day. [That's what he likes about this holiday. It's a chance to kiss people without any guilt attached because the kisses are unavoidable and if they happen to be enjoyable so much the better.] Is that your entire list? I'll allow you to interrogate me about mine if you feel the need.

I don't think it would be such a bad thing to be haunted by, do you?

[ The most perfect of gentleman, thank you. ]

The feeling is very much mutual, Ianto.

[ He hummed and drummed his fingers. ]

It's not very polite to kiss and tell, now is it? Besides, the day is only half done. I can't give you a full accounting yet even if I wanted to.

No, I suppose it isn't.

[As for who he kissed, it almost seems unexciting. He doesn't think there was anyone besides Kirk he hasn't been trapped with by one of these things before.] Oh, I don't know. This is my fourth time with these things. I think at this point everyone has given up on taking them too seriously. Kissing and telling doesn't seem to matter as much in this situation.

Heh, I suppose you have a point. But between you and me, I haven't actually fully hated kissing anyone so far.

[ He didn't like being forced, of course, but so far not one kiss had been terrible. Silver linings, you see Ianto. ]
