Yes, I was informed of that this morning.

[ And put this sudden youth to very good use if he did say so himself, but he wouldn't bore Chekov with those details. ]

I haven't had time yet to decide if I'm upset about that or not.

[Please never share the details. Please.]

Being younger is nothing to be upset about. Is your mind still intact? [Or did that de-age too, because that's never fun.]

[ Rude! ]

Depends on what you mean by intact. If you mean do I remember the past twenty years, then no, I don't. When I woke up this morning, i thought were back in the 400s.

[Oh, come on. Do you want details about his love life? Wait, maybe. Never mind.]

That was what I meant, yes. [He frowns thoughtfully.] Aha. What have you learned about the present?

[ Depends. He is curious. Your captain is a little bit of a gossip monger at times, Pavel. ]

We've all been stuck here, but the wardens have been over thrown more or less.

[ It was a basic summation, but to be fair, his morning was taken up with, uh, other matters. ]

[He has managed to avoid discussing their respective sex lives for over twenty years. He isn't about to break that record.]

Yes, that's true. Also Kitty and I have been married for seventeen years... when you're the correct age, you're very proud of me for that.

[ Impressive, truly and honestly Chekov. ]

Kitty? Really? I wouldn't have guessed. But good on you!

[ Yeah, still proud, and you're getting a shoulder clap for that Chekov. ]

I'm going to safely guess I'm not tied down. But how's the married life going for you?

You wouldn't have? I've been stupidly in love with her since before you came here.

[He's pleased that even young Kirk is proud, though. There was some shame that came along with the decision to settle down. It felt like giving up, and Chekov never wanted to disappoint his captain by giving up on finding a way home.]

A safe guess on your part. [He looks down at his coffee, expression solemn.] Being married to Kitty is the best thing about this place. I would have gone crazy here without her.

[ He smiled quietly, gently even. Such things were not for him, and he had known that from a very young age. Not that he couldn't be faithful, but making that kind of dedication to someone? It terrified him. He could not say why, but it did, and if he was a coward about one thing in his life, it was this.

But, he was happy for those who could find that connection, who could cling with all their might to it and live their lives happily with each other. ]

She's very lucky to have you.

[ A pause. ]

Tell me I officiated the wedding.

[ He was your captain, he had better damn well have officiated! ]

[Settling down isn't something that Chekov had intended to do, either--not at home. He is extremely dedicated, but at home, that dedication had been to Starfleet and its grand exploratory aims. Here, though? Without Starfleet or any missions or great purposes, he found another object of devotion.]

I am at least as lucky.

[He rolls his eyes but can't quite hide a smile.]

Of course you did. You would have been insufferable if we had asked someone else.

[ Maybe that was Kirk's problem. He was married to the work and have never been able to divorce it, because he truly loved it. Even here, so far removed from it, he could never quite give up looking for stars beyond that watery sky. ]

It is true, I would have. You did the right thing, because I would never have let you forget such an insufferable slight.

[Sometimes it's necessary to let go of things that are lost beyond retrieval, even when those things as important as home. Chekov isn't proud of himself for giving up when Kirk could not, but here he is. Blame it on a Russian sense of futility.]

We have been trapped together for years. It always seems wisest to stay in the good graces of inescapable companions.

[ There was nothing to be proud or disappointed of. They each had their own paths to travel, and when Chekov's brought him a happiness, Kirk was proud of him and delighted for him. It was all he really wanted for his crew, for his family, after all. ]

That is a very wise policy, yes. I always knew you were smart, Chekov.

You say that as though my intelligence has been in doubt before. [He's teasing, of course. Everyone has always known he's brilliant. Probably. He hopes.]

Never in doubt, it just really shines at certain points.

[ Please, he knew he had the super-genius Russian on his crew and he was always willing to brag about that. ]
