DAY 365 — Anniversary Festival Mingle

Happy Day 365, Marina Nova!

Hear ye, hear ye! Inmates, prisoners, fellow underwater dwellers! Lend me your ears and hands and actually just bring all of you because we're having a ye olde Renaissance Faire to celebrate a full year in this bubble under the sea!

The dome has of course been decked out appropriately. Flickering torches light the pathways, interspersed with larger bonfires that you can cosy up to with that special someone - or perhaps just a glass of honey mead. Pennant banners hang across the gates and along the buildings, sporting the proud coat of arms of the prison (a lot of purple and octopi, for some reason) and many of the clothing stores offer time-appropriate options for those of you who still knows how to have fun. The kiosk has even been re-imagined into a castle.

Many areas within the dome has activities to partake in and, if you're skilled or lucky or both, prizes to win!

Sector 5 Gamegrounds: What better way to show your bravery than by participating in a series of tests of strength and cunning? Sector 5 provides the inmates with a chance to try such varied sports as varpa, caber tossing, ring toss or the very dignified sport of rövkrok, a type of wrestling that requires skill as well as no sense of shame. Not tough enough for you? There are also friendly foam weapons and armor available for those who want to engage in a chivalrous bout of hand to hand combat, test your archery skills — or maybe convince another prisoner to give you a piggyback ride and go jousting!

Competitors that do well enough and show outstanding bravery may be rewarded with a handful of rehab points, or a personalized pennant — or maybe a kiss from the lord or lady of your choosing!

Less violent activities: Not into skewering your neighbors on spears? Maybe you'd rather relax with a game of knucklebones, pick up sticks or Nine Men's Morris. Boards and instructions are readily available in several areas. If you're more creatively inclined there's also activity tables on offer where you can create your own coat of arms, bind yourself a flower crown or learn the art of illumination.

Food: The food carts in sector 0 are now carrying food fit for the occasion. Whole roasted pigs and poultry, wild rabbit in plum sauce, thick beef stews smelling of rich saffron, roasted vegetables (no potatoes here, no sir!) and cream-stewed cabbage for the vegetarians among us. If you're still hungry there's saffron pancake, ginger and clove cookies or bread pudding with raisins for dessert. There's plenty of mulled wine, honey mead, foaming beer, honeyd applewater and lingonberry juice to wash it down with. Enjoy!

Dance: As is custom, there will be a dance at the beach at the end of the day. Great fires will roar and a band of robots will strike up music suitable for dancing! Dress up in your finest satin and velvet, brush the extrement off your shoes and grab a partner!

Enjoy!

Well, [ seemingly unable to keep her hands still, the fingers of one tug at his costume's collar ] you have one now. Unless you intend to stand back while I dance with everyone but you.

I'm still wearing the crown, right? [ That sounded rougher than he'd intended it to, and he sighs. ] If you're gonna teach me, you might want to start telling me what I'm supposed to be doing. Can't be worse than the wrestling.

You are. [ and although there's something awfully endearing — adorable, even — about him putting up with a circle of flowers in his hair, if wearing it makes him uncomfortable, she won't force him to endure it. not on top of everything else.

leia stops dancing and reaches for the crown. ]
Here, let me take it.

Hey, now. [ Han rears back enough that she can't reach. Which is easy enough considering how tall he is versus how short Leia is. ] What if I'm starting to get used to it?

Relax, remember? Show me a step.

She glowers at him sourly for using his height advantage against her, and with her hand still stretched out towards him, she's tempted to swat him with it.

But she doesn't, instead reaching for one of the hands on her waist with the intent of guiding him through a simple box step.

"Look down at my feet. Watch what I'm doing. One... two... three." She repeats the steps, leading him through them slowly. "See?"

"I can hardly see your feet."

It's a mild complaint, because that outfit is about ninety percent skirts, but he can tell what she's doing. Enough that he follows along after a second, and manages to not step on her toes. This isn't the strangest thing he's worn in his life, or the most complicated thing he's ever done, and the more he goes through the movements the more confident he is that he won't screw up spectacularly.

"Doesn't seem like you need to."

But she removes her hand from his shoulder anyway, reaching down to grab a handful of skirts and haul them up high enough for him to see her feet. She moves gracefully and fluidly through the steps, counting off every so often when he falls out of step. They're out of sync with the music, but he's trying. Leia would do these slow, easy steps to the loudest, most obnoxious baka rock, as long as he kept trying.

"You know, you're not nearly as bad at this as you think."

Baka rock would've been an interesting addition to whatever this party is, but Gamorrean music was never Han's style. This is barely Han's style, but he does better when he thinks of it like flying. Dodging her toes like he's dodging asteroids, swooping movements side to side.

"I think you've used that line on me before, sweetheart." It's a good line, he likes it.

"Only because you fail to improve upon what you've already learned," she quips in the absence of being able to shove or swat him for that comment.

She could, but why would she want to? He's just barely managing to miss stomping on her toes every tenth or twelfth step; she's not about to outright disrupt what balance and rhythm he's found in the dance by thwacking him in the arm. Light banter is preferable — and much more them.

The banter is certainly the most normal thing they've got to enjoy in this place. Han settles into it easily, dodging her toes for the upteenth time.

"Hey, maybe I'm not as bad as you think, either."

Looking up to put on a hurt look for her makes him miss another step, but he catches up. This would make a grand metaphor in his mind for how he's still catching up from the year he lost to carbonite on top of the month she's had in prison, but if he was paying that much attention to the emotional parallels to his feet he really would stomp her toes.

Just like the dancing (at least for her), it's easy to fall back into step with these arguments of theirs. Minor disputes that aren't really disputes at all. Arguing for the sake of arguing, because they both enjoy flinging words at one another that lack punch, bark, and bite. They're very capable of bickering heatedly and saying things deliberately designed to wound and get under the other's skin, but for all intents and purposes, this is nothing more than flirting.

"Oh? Intending to prove me wrong, flyboy?"

"You think I can't? 'Cause there's a couple things I've always wanted to try on a dancefloor."

There's a few moves he's seen in holovids that seem easy and impressive at the same time. Well, probably not easy in practice, but he's kind of given up on attempting to not make a fool of himself today. It doesn't hurt, though, that he made that sound incredibly inappropriate for the sake of her reaction.

This time, she does hit him, interrupting their dance by swatting his shoulder not at all playfully for the innuendo he managed to weave through his words.

"Han," she chides, gesturing out towards the dance floor and the other beings occupying it. As if he needs to be reminded that they are in public and not sequestered away behind bulkheads and locked doors.

Han smirks and leans in, "Get your head out of the gutter, Leia. We're at a party, remember?"

With that, he grabs her hand and spins her around a couple times, probably a little faster than would be best, but not too far away from the little space they have at the edge of the dancefloor. Pulling her back is a little awkward with the issue of momentum, though, and he nearly drops her when he goes in for a dip that turns out about as graceless as a dip can be.

Gutter? Her eyes narrow in tell-tale warning, but that retort that's sitting on the tip of her tongue is swiftly silenced by his so-called bravado. And supposed 'moves' that Leia doubts to the point that she throws out a hand in preparation of catching herself before she hits the ground when he dips her. The tips of her fingers graze the wooden platform, nails scraping against it.

Leia doesn't realize she's propelling herself up towards him — and in turn, forcing him back into a standing position — until it's already been done and her arms are around his neck and she's squeezing his shoulders a little too tightly, feet dangling in the air.

"You need to get those moves of yours looked at before you injure someone with them."

He looks entirely too smug about the prowess of his not very smooth at all moves for the few seconds it takes before she's launching herself upwards, somehow. Launching him, too, and then grabbing hold like he'd just dangled her over the ledge of a Coruscant walkway.

There's a moment, a few breaths, where he just looks down at her in confusion before easing her feet back to the floor.

"What was that?" Not that he couldn't guess--the Force. Of course it is. Can't break the tradition that carries on of every time Han is absent against his will, one of the two ends up learning some powerful tricks.

His prowess is entirely imagined, and Leia is quick to assume that he's referring to his own lack of finesse and not whatever she did (which is still in dire need of refining).

"On some worlds, I imagine that's called dancing. You'll have to tell me which, for those moves don't exist on any planet I've ever been to."

"Not what I meant, sweetheart."

Which sounds as angry as it sounds annoyed. Not because of the insult--he's had worse, especially from Leia--but because that sounds suspiciously like she knows exactly what he's talking about and is dodging the question.

She knows, but she's far too good at pretending she doesn't for her own good. It's dishonest of her and unfair to him, but there was a difference between allowing someone not from her galaxy see her budding talents and putting them on display for someone who knew what that power could do. Who'd seen and experienced all of its unpleasant edges. Who knew well of the fears that were tethered to them, and how deathly afraid she was of becoming exactly like the man who wielded that power while bathed in darkness.

Reid might have something of an understanding that she appreciated on a different level, but he had only seen her experiences. Han had been right there with her for a vast majority of it.

"This is not a conversation I wish to have right now," she replies tartly, turning away from him and stepping off the dancing platform.

Nope, no, nuh-uh. She's not pulling this on him again, not anymore. Han's advantage here is having longer legs, and he out paces her easily enough to block her from getting too far away from him.

"Since when did you start wishing, huh?" He looks completely and utterly frustrated, and this is less about what she's not talking about than the fact that she's not talking. "Look, we both know what that was. It's a little late for you to start playing the Lone Hero, not here and not with me."

She glares at him for blocking her path, full of misplaced ire that's not at all directed at him. All those deserving of her anger are either dead or inaccessible in this phantom digital realm beneath the sea. There's no one to fling her anger at when it sparks and flares, but Han can take it. She's well aware of the number of times he got in her face deliberately to make her work out some of her aggression by shouting at him when no other outlet was available. Him forcing her to let out some of that steam has saved her many times in ways she'll one day figure out how to thank him for.

"The Force. Is that what you want me to say?"

"It's a start," and he knows she's right. This is probably not a conversation they should have in public, let alone an argument, but he's got a feeling that if he lets her put it off he won't get anything out of her about it at all.

Overall, this isn't an ideal arrangement, but it's the best Han has. The best he's ever really come up with to deal with her, and it suits them pretty well. Mostly he's just glad Leia isn't storming off and acting like he's just another officer she gets to dismiss.

Still, he deflates a little once he's got the point across. He knows that this isn't just a sore subject with Leia, it's more like an open wound.

"C'mon. We can get something to eat and you can tell me all about it. Preferably without acting like I don't know the first thing about you."

Without acting like he doesn't know the first thing about her.

That does well to knock her down a peg or two and lower some of those automatic defenses, reminding her that this is Han. He gets it — gets her. Even when she doesn't want him to, he always seems to find a way to get under her skin and understand her almost as if he's doing it just to spite her. It's frustrating.

(She's thankful for it. Grateful for him. Still sorry that she even contemplated for a moment being with someone other than this awkward ex-smuggler who can't dance or leg wrestle.)

"But you don't know the Force," she points out, though her tone has softened considerably. "And neither do I. That's the problem. I didn't mean to do that," a gesture towards the dance floor, "yet I did. It happened, and I made it happen without doing anything to make it happen. Do you understand?"

They've got something like an equal exchange of getting under each other's skin. She's been doing it to him since they met.

"Instinct," which doesn't mean he understands, but he's trying to be supportive. A better version of supportive than he was when she saw Anakin's ghost, and he is steering her further away from the dance floor and toward food. "Would've kept you from getting dropped, if I'd been worse at that than I was."

That last part is admitted with a grimace he is only capable of when admitting he's wrong.

And he hasn't? It's not her fault he didn't have a better plan and the best she could come up with on such short notice was to jump in a garbage shoot. At least she got them away from the blaster fire. They certainly would've met a swifter end otherwise; one that the droids would've been unable to save them from.

"Instinct," she bites back, allowing him to guide her steps. "Instinct doesn't help me. It needs to be controlled, not something that only happens when I think I'm about to get dropped. Trying this... Making an attempt to open myself up to this power that I have was supposed to be something I did little by little." She sighs. "But it seems like ever since I allowed that door to open, it won't shut."
