They're family. They leave me a lot of choice.

I see. The shadow thing, I should have known. Not many people can do that that aren't... Something.

Demi-God. Wow. [She shakes her head. She felt like they already had this conversation, well, bits and pieces of it, her mind trying to fuse them together to one understandable bit of information.]

And you can still be kept here?

[It's hard to keep track of who knows and who doesn't, and who has already been told. It would be silly to keep a list on hand, wouldn't it, but he almost feels it's necessary sometimes.]

Yeah. Apparently so. My powers aren't worth a whole lot in this place.

What more can you do? Except from the whole shadow... [A soft handgesture replaces words] Thing.

Ah, well. [Are you sure you want to know? Is he sure he wants you to know?] I can sense death. And summon and control dead things - like skeletons and corpses, souls... Um, some control over earth. Rocks and things, you know. Dream walking?

That is... [Very very frightening] Rather interesting. Sounds like you are a powerful lad.

I am. [Maybe not as powerful as Percy, or Jason. Or maybe just as. He's also a few years younger than either of them. Fortunately, he's never had to fight them to find out.]

[Gwen stands silent. It is hard to find words to describe the feelings that are bounding through her. It feels odd standing in front of someone so young, who could.. Very well have her corps dance around.]

Can you hear them? The dead?

[It's alright. He's used to people not being okay with him or what he can do or just who he inherited his power from. He surprised she's still talking to him.] I can. Back ... where I come from, and spent more time with them than the living.

What do they say? When they talk to you what do they say? Are they scared? Do you comfort them?

[There is a rasp in her voice. Her mouth shivering, her eyes unflitting.]

[He can't look her in the eye anymore. His gaze flicks off to the side and he crosses his arms and shrugs.]

I've heard confessions, regrets. Sure some are scared, when they first realize they're dead. I do what I can. I get begging, a lot. They yearn for life, even when they can't really remember it, so they'll cling and ask to be brought back to the surface. Some want favors, messages to sent to loved ones. But it's forbidden.

And they cry out for their mother. It's awful when they do that. And they cry for help, as if you're not trying, as if you're not helping. And the gasp... Oh God the gasp when they get their voice back... Trying to expanding their lungs without breath.

Not all the time. Just.. When I use this glove we had back at Torchwood. I can make them come to life again through my hands and it's [the most powerful thing in the universe] awful.

Why would you do it, if it's awful? [Not to mention upsetting the balance, but he'd be a hypocrite to bring that up.]

Well... No. And yes. One girl did but then she had to sort of switch place with me, you know the whole... Balance in the cosmos or something I think. So I started being shot in the head, but very very slowly.

[He nods. Yes. That was how things were supposed to work.] To take a soul back from death, you have to give another in return. In my world, you're supposed to trade the soul of someone who has cheated death for the one you mean to save. [He has more than a little experience with this.]

How old are you? Really?

[That's ... an interesting question. He shifts and throws his gaze off to the side. Why would she ask like that?]

Depends on how you look at it. About fourteen, I think.

But also, mid-eighties.
