[You won't hear them coming. You won't see their snare. The mistletoe bots are out and they're hunting you, two by two. You can run and you can hide, but eventually you will be caught, and then there's nothing left to do but kiss your way out!

Chapstick stations will be available.]

You're very quick to make assumptions!

[He grins, teeth showing.] Bit of both, actually. Nothing cements good relations between species like a good marriage or two!

But they weren't wrong. [Smiling back at him.] And marriage? You haven't been married before have you? [That would surprise her.]

[Her use of 'before' catches him for a moment, before he realises that okay, they've made the analogy of blue-banding being like marriage before - really, really strict marriage, on the bedroom side of things at least.

Then he smiles, wryly.]
Not to an alien, no. But yeah, I've been married once or twice. Hang around someone long enough, the question tends to come up.

[There's a lot there that he's not telling, though. There are very painful memories mixed in with the happy ones.]

[She's never been a fan of the "blue bands = marriage" mentality since she started it off with Tyki and all. In this case she just meant before because she doesn't think he's married now.]

Once or twice? It comes up? [She raises a brow at him, but then the expression softens, wondering if it's less dismissive on his part and more protective ambiguity.] Did something happen? [Did you outlive them? But she doesn't actually say that part out loud.]

[He gives her what tries to be a limpid look, but there's far too much pain hiding behind it to really pull it off. When he speaks, his voice is very, very dry.]

They died.

[Of course they did. Everyone always dies, sooner or later.

Except him.]

You were married too, weren't you? Back home?

[It's a rather lame attempt at deflection considering it doesn't really change the subject. Perhaps there's a reason for that. Perhaps it is actually something he wants to talk about, deep down.]

Jack... [She says it softly and with understanding. Maybe Pitor didn't die—not until after her anyway—but she almost lost him more than once. She did lose her parents, friends, and then all her students.]

I was, yeah. Maybe still am technically. [Not that it was ever an official, legal sort of ceremony. Not enough civilization left for that.]

But it's over. Even if he was here, it'd be over.

...Haven't exactly stopped missing him though. [Looking at him thoughtfully. She figures she's not the only one missing people.]

[He has to swallow hard at the gentle understanding in her voice when she says his name. She may have lived only a fraction of his own lifetime, but of all the people here, she's probably one of those who can come closest to understanding this. He knows she's lost people too, a lot of people.

At least what she says next is fairly distracting, without leaving the subject entirely. He gives her an interested look, though his voice is gentle too when he speaks.]

What happened?

Things were bad at the end. He was getting obsessed with saving his little sister he'd thought was dead for years. I get it, you know? But he sacrificed all our students to get her out of that prison. He said he was going back for them. I wasn't there. I don't know for sure.

...But he didn't go back.

Then he was about to accidentally trample me to death before I got pulled out for life in prison. That one would be easier to forgive.

[She's quiet a moment before looking at Jack.] I've changed here. I'm just not the person who married him anymore. [And whether they could work it out or not, she's moved on now. Maybe she pushed herself to do that before she was ready, and maybe it hasn't been that long, but it feels like a lifetime ago already.]

What happened with you?

That sounds harsh. Especially the getting trampled bit!

[Though there's a lot of sympathy there beneath the humour.

At her question, his mouth twists wryly.]
Which time? They died, all of them. Some of them got old first, while I stayed young, which sucked. Some of them didn't have a chance to get old, which sucked more.

Ianto was one of those who died far, far too young.

The first one. [She figures that one always has some deep meaning because it's the first. But the loss always hurts. And the steadily increasing age difference? She's starting to know a little something about that. Reid keeps gaining years and memories from home where she gains days.]

The first one. [Okay. One of the hardest, if not the hardest. He swallows.]

Emily Grey. She was beautiful, inside and out, one of a kind. Lovely enough to make me stop playing the field and agree to settle down. I gave it all up, made a commitment, gave her everything. And it was wonderful, for a while.

And then came World War One. I signed up, and got killed in action. I hadn't told her, so I couldn't go back to her. I had to watch from a distance as she grew old and died, never able to make contact again.

[She listens with interest and compassion. Living like that can't be easy. When he's the only one with that lifespan then even though he has just one life to lead he almost has to break it up in to different lives because of those around him.]

Did you ever think about it? Going back. I mean making up a story about how it wasn't really you who died or telling her the truth?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]foreverjack
2015-03-22 12:22 pm UTC (link)
[He gives her a helpless look.] Of course I did. Oh, so many times.

[He sighs.] But it had made me realise. How things just couldn't be the same. I couldn't have a normal relationship, not if I was going to use the gift I'd been given for good, to put myself in the way of bullets instead of others who wouldn't get up again.

And I was scared. If I'd gone back to her, I'd either have to lie to her for the rest of her life, or tell her the truth and risk losing her. I just couldn't do it.

So, what made you try again after that? After all the realizations? [But does she really need to ask? How many times has Kitty done something after thinking it wasn't the best choice?]

[He smiles ruefully.] There's only so long a guy can live alone, playing the field. Eventually, you feel the need to connect again, to feel close to someone.

It seems like I go in cycles. Get burned, stay away from the first, then eventually get cold and start creeping closer to the flames again.

[info]kitty_has_claws

Sure. I do that in really tight, non-immortal cycles. And without the playing the field parts in between. [She tried. Tyki wasn't supposed to mean anything. He was very specifically supposed to be a there to help her forget without getting attached or trusting or getting hurt. Things don't always work out as planned.]

[He grins faintly, attempting to lighten the mood again.] Oh, but the playing the field parts are half the fun! You're missing out, sweetheart.

[A slight shrug.] Not that it's easy playing the field here, of course.

You mean because of these? [Her blue banded wrist comes up. She thought about dissolving it a few times when it was too hard to see it and be reminded, but she couldn't do it. She gives a little shrug.]

I married the first guy I ever fell for. I did make out with Ollie before Tyki though. That's like playing the field, right? [Oliver disappeared shortly thereafter, so hard to say what might have happened there.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]foreverjack
2015-03-27 02:50 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, because of those. [He'd noticed her band, of course - and Reid's. The fact they're both still wearing them is one of those small things that's given him hope for them both.

Then he lets out a low whistle, teetering between horror and admiration that someone could go so far as to marry their first love without playing around even a little.]
Woah. That's... either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid, no idea which!

Who's Ollie?

I felt pretty good about it at the time. Looking back... [She doesn't want to regret it. It was a pretty big part of her short life.] Anyway, I was pretty young. [Not "we" were pretty young since he was definitely older.] And life was hard and brief back home, so when you found something worth holding on to, you did.

Oliver Queen. He was around pretty early on in my time here. Well, not exactly here. The other Marina. [And he had a secret identity so she probably shouldn't point that part out, huh?]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]foreverjack
2015-03-30 08:30 pm UTC (link)
[Since Oliver's no longer here, and probably doesn't exist in Jack's world, giving away his identity probably isn't going to be a huge disaster, but that's not really what Jack's interested in anyway.]

I thought Tyki was your rebound guy? So you've been hiding another little relationship in there too, eh? [Gently teasing.]

Oliver was...there the night I found out Piotr would have killed me in another few seconds. I was drunk and hurt and angry. He was cute and there. Did I mention that he was there? Proximity is important when you're drunk. [They'd also bonded piror to this some and there was some chemistry, but back then she was pretty locked in on being married.]

So, making out happened and I woke up in his room the next day, but he was at least 65% gentleman and it didn't go any further than kissing. Couldn't really turn into a rebound thing. He went and got himself missing in the stabilizer a few days later.

Shame. Sounds like a good guy! [Yes, even Jack can appreciate someone being a gentleman in such a situation. He does enjoy taking advantage of people, but only if they deserve it, to his mind. He strongly disapproves of taking advantage who are drunk and lonely and in need of comfort.

He lifts a hand to stroke a stray hair back off her face, gentle and affectionate.]
I'm glad he was there for you.

You're hoping proximity is about to work on me, aren't you? [She gives him a little smirk in hopes of covering up that part where it is working a little. But also to cover up that part of her that isn't always sure about letting affection and compassion in especially when it's the people who let her in that end up hurting her.]

Absolutely. [He smirks back, but gently, blue eyes twinkling to show he really is only teasing. He quirks an amused eyebrow.] And you do seem to be feeling better...
