"Don't get what? That it can be okay for two men to kiss each other - or more? Or that I, in particular, very much enjoy it?"

And yeah, he is managing to display at least an element of tact, because he's been with enough young men in denial about their sexuality to be fairly sure what all that trembling was about during the kiss, but he's decent enough not to say it out loud.

At least, not yet.

Kanji feels like he's taken a punch to the gut, as if all the air has been knocked out of his lungs. He looks Jack over, staring wide eyed at his military coat and the confident way he carries himself and all he can say is, "But you don't seem like a-" He cuts off, but it's easy enough to guess he's had any number of the ugly words that could finish that sentence aimed his way over the course of his short life.

"A poof?" He grins, wide and free, and spreads his hands. "Oh, sometimes I really do seem like one!" He shrugs. "It's not that proscriptive with me, though. I'll shag anything that moves, if it's hot enough. Man, woman, tentacle alien - I'm really not bothered."

He sighs, and takes a proper look at Kanji for the first time. "When are you from, kid?"

It's a nicer word than he would have gone with. His brain stumbles across the list of things he says he's interested in. Wait, what? That's... Wait, that's big. Is he for real? It's not just... Not just him. He's staring again, but it's a different sort of look than before. Like this could be something that changes his life as long as he can get up the courage to ask about it. Almost absently he answers, "Uh, 2011. Japan. Wait, what do you mean, uh, guys and girls?"

Damn twenty-first century again! Why can't there be some more people here from the thirty-first, or basically any time further on than this? He forces back a sigh and focusses instead on the kid's obvious curiosity.

"It's called bisexuality, sweetheart. Or, in mine, omnisexuality, since there are more options by then than just male or female." He gives Kanji a smile, surprisingly gentle. "There's nothing wrong in it, you know. There's so much fun to be had out there - it's a crime not to make the most of it!"

He bristles visibly at the sweetheart thing, then runs an uncomfortable hand through his hair, clearly deep in some private internal struggle. He does not talk about this shit; he learned that real fast as a kid. But when is he ever gonna have anybody around like this again? Someone who might be able to answer the one big confusing question he has about himself that makes him wake up every morning wondering if he's some kinda freak? Nobody he's ever met seems this cool with talking about things the way this guy does. He's always talking about how brave he is, right? Time to prove it. Ok, here goes!

Shit this is hard.

He tries again, swallowing hard. "Hey, uh, I know we just met and all but, uh, can I, um, can I ask you somethin'?"

He has a fair idea where this might be going, but he knows from experience that Kanji has to ask it himself. Leading him into it isn't going help anyone.

"Sure," he nods, and smiles, open and waiting, patient and friendly.

Yeah, maybe not so sure. Brace yourself, Jack, this is a weird one. Okay, here goes. He takes a deep breath. It ain't like this can come back and bite him in the ass too much. Naoto ain't here or anything after all.

"Okay, so, uh, there's this guy I, um, I l-like. Back home. Only she ain't actually a guy. I mean, she dresses like a guy and she said she was. Only she's not. She's got her own stuff goin' on, you know?" It's pretty obvious that no matter what he may think of himself he clearly thinks Naoto is a total badass for all this. "But I, um, I still like her. Is that a thing?" A pause, then, "You tell anybody and I'll smash your face in." If anyone could follow up on that threat he sure seems like he could.

Well, that's certainly a bit of a change from the more usual 'coming out' kind of confessions he rather frequently gets to hear (he seems to bring out these kind of things in people; he can't think why)! He listens with genuine interest, rather intrigued, and amused by the threat that ends it, though he does his best to nod solemnly and try to remember not to tell anyone, since for some reason not telling anyone is obviously important to this kid.

"Of course it's a thing," he says easily. Was Kanji not listening when he said he'd fuck anything? "It's what I was saying: you should feel free to want anyone, regardless of gender, or apparent gender. It's not about what sex someone is, or even what sex they appear to be; it's about the connection you have with them."

Yeah, can't imagine why you always get these talks, Jack. Kanji is still bright red and uncomfortable looking, and can't quite decide how he feels about that statement. On the one hand it's the first time anyone has said anything to him that makes him feel like maybe there isn't something wrong with him. He's never had anyone out the way he feels so perfectly into words like that before and he can't quite believe it. On the other hand he doesn't even know this guy. A few positive words from him aren't likely to change a lifetime of bad experiences.

He glances down, scuffing his boot against the ground then looking back up at him. "Nobody ever told me anything like that before."

"That's because you come from a time when everyone is horribly blinkered," Jack says dryly. "Luckily, I think you'll find most people are far more understanding here. Certainly, I can't think of anyone who's had an adverse reaction to seeing my boyfriend and I together here - whereas we used to get all sorts of looks back in Cardiff."

Maybe that will help convince Kanji that what he feels is not wrong but just natural - and, in Jack's opinion, to be celebrated.

"Actually," he says, on a thought, "have you met a kid named Nico here? The two of you might find some things in common to talk about."

This is a lot to take in. Boyfriend? Seriously? This guy? When he hears about guys with boyfriends he expects somone like his Shadow acted; over the top, a crazy stereotype. It's hard to process and he can't quite make it make sense. And Nico? They're friends. What's that supposed to mean, stuff in common? Not... Not think kinda stuff, right? No way.

"Yeah, I don't... I... That is..." He's not good with words, and he never has been. Not in situations like this where he's flusteredand confused and doesn't know what to think about everything.

Hey, Jack is - or at least the persona he projects is - an over the top, crazy stereotype! Just perhaps not quite the kind you're thinking of.

He frowns as Kanji stumbles over his words, trying to follow where his brain's going with this, and failing.

"You know him already?" he hazards, because he thinks that's a part of what the kid's trying to get across.

He nods awkwardly. Like he said, not good with words. He wears his heart on his sleeve and when he does manage to say things they're totally sincere. It's just the problem of getting to there first. "Y-yeah, we're friends."

He doesn't think he's ever had this long a conversation about this subject and he still half expects it to turn unpleasant soon.

"Well, have a chat with him about this," Jack tells him easily. "I think you'll find he'll understand more than you expect."

He's trying not to give away everything Nico told him, because that's Nico's secret to tell, but trying to do everything he can to get them to talk to each other. They might not actually be interested in one another - especially if this kid's thing actually turns out to be just girls dressed as boys, but he figures any kid that age who's interested in something society doesn't think they should be could use a friend who's going through the same thing.

"Seen anyone here you've found yourself interested in?" he asks casually, partly to see if Kanji's interests might be expanded beyond girls who dress as boys.

"Huh?!" Cue the panicked flailing. Romance ain't exactly on his mind in prison and did he not just hear him say he liked someone at home? "What the hell kinda question is that?!"

As for what he likes specifically he really couldn't say. He though he liked guys, then Naoto proved that wasn't always the case and it confuses him. He knows he likes Naoto because she's smart, and the Detective Prince, and mysterious and cute and that's enough for him right now. He might not be sure about himself but he's damn sure about her even if he'll never get up the courage to admit it.

Jack's eyebrows go up again, amused. "You could be here for a good long time," he points out lightly. "You want to spend all that time alone?"

"Okay, first up you're wrong 'cause I'm totally gonna bust outta here. And second, dude, still, what the hell kinda question is that?" Still yelling, which is how he does panic. Seriously though what the hell? Why would romance be on his mind, he's got better shit to do with his time. Like knitting or punching things.

Jack really, really doesn't get why this is a strange thing to ask, but he lets it go in favour of addressing the kid's assertion that he's going to escape.

"Do you have any idea how hard it is to get out of here?" he asks mildly. "You're aware this is a completely virtual environment, right?"

"Oh, it is? Sweet!" He had not realized that and actually it makes him a lot more confident about the whole escaping thing. Virtual worlds he can do. Granted this isn't quite the kind he's thinking of, but he doesn't know that. Can't be harder to figure out than the TV world, right? And it's a hell of a lot less confusion.

Well, that's a different kind of response to that one! He kind of wishes everyone could embrace the idea so easily, instead of freaking out about it.

"Have to admit, that went a lot more smoothly than I anticipated!" he remarks, inviting the kid to elaborate.

"Uhhh," This never gets any less weird no matter how often he explains it. "At home me and my friends go into the TV and rescue people. It's kinda a long story. But the world in there, I dunno, I guess it's real but it's kinda not, too. It gets created by the person there."

It's not that he doesn't believe the kid - hell, he's seen some really strange stuff in his time! - it's more that he doesn't get what he's saying.

"You go... into the TV?" he repeats, trying to work it out.

"Yeah, there's this world in there with Shadows and Personas and stuff. Look, I dunno how to explain it, usually Teddie handles that shit, okay!" A pause, then, "Uh, Teddie's this talking...bear...thing..." Why is his life so hard to explain?

He tries not to look too amused, he really does, but it's hard. The TV part, okay, he could accept that, but the talking bear? It's hard not to snigger at that.

Still, he has long practice at glossing over things like that. "Well, sounds like you have a very interesting life back home! I guess the most relevant part is: how do you get in and out of the TV world? Could you shed any light on how to get back to the real world here?"
