Day 305 : MISTLETOE BOT MINGLE
[You won't hear them coming. You won't see their snare. The mistletoe bots are out and they're hunting you, two by two. You can run and you can hide, but eventually you will be caught, and then there's nothing left to do but kiss your way out!

Chapstick stations will be available.]

Gladly. Are you familiar with ten-dimensional string theory and the concept of hyperspace?

[Escape attempts from the City are things that he is less eager to discuss at length.] Ehhh. In two years, I--along with a number of very clever scientists, although none of them stayed for long--was unable to come up with so much as a logical plan of escape. There were some anomalous occurrences and instances where the barriers surrounding us weakened, but no one left of their own will until we were evicted.

I'm familiar with string theory. Infinite worlds. Folding dimensions. [She nods.] I might have heard of hyperspace. [More so from books and not the non-fiction kind though.]

Evicted?

Yes, good, then you are already accept that there are an untold number of universes that, under normal circumstances, do not interact or allow for travel between them. I think it's possible that the beings who bring us to these worlds--worlds like Marina and the City, where I was before--inhabit a higher dimension. This not only lets them access numerous four-dimensional universes by way of hyperspace, but also gives them abilities that are, to us, almost godly. If we could only jump up a dimension, we too could navigate through hyperspace and back to our native universes.

"Evicted" may have been the wrong word to use. We were encouraged to leave by the City's overseers, and they created doors that we were able to take home. Those doors were similar to the ones that opened here, and so I was very optimistic when they appeared.

Well...sure, but back home we had some ways of hoping dimensions already. That part wasn't all that new to me. Higher dimensions though? It's an interesting thought. Makes sense with that theory too.

And similar doors, huh? Gods and the godlike. Could all have been part of the same thing. You just got a different narrative. Just one big experiment, some people are trapped by gods. Some people are prisoners. Maybe some people are on a three hour cruise.

Hopping dimensions, or hopping universes? Moving between universes is a relatively simple matter if you compare it to moving between spatial dimensions.

Three-hour cruise? [There's a cultural reference that he's a couple hundred years too late to understand.] This is an interesting thought. I wonder if all of these prisons are related... if they all have a goal in common.

[They may have forgotten about the bots. Guess what? The bots didn't forget about them. There's one coming their way, in fact.]

A little from column A and a little from column B. I can't say I personally did much of the hopping though.

Don't worry about the cruise part. I'm just saying it could all be part of the same thing. Not sure if that tells us anything, but more information couldn't—"kiss!"—hurt.

Do you know how this hopping happened? None of the ways that we have used to travel between universes in my time are reproducible, given the materials and energy resources available here.

[Excuse you, bot, but they're having a conversation here! Chekov leans in to give Kitty a perfunctory kiss.]

Is there a complete collection of information about MarinaNova? I would like to learn more--compare what is known about this universe to what was known about the City.

[She was not expecting kiss without any warning or fanfare. But then there it was and there it went and he's still talking. She looks more amused than surprised. It takes a lot to surprise her and more to get her look surprised.]

...No, I know some of the basics, but not the inner workings and a lot of time it was power based. Mutant power based. [And not with phasing.] And if you're looking or a book or something I don't think you'll find that. I've been here since Day 24, so I know some things.

[The bot is pleased and that's good enough. If Kitty would like more kissing at a time when they're not mid-conversation, however, Chekov can be very accommodating.]

Ah... nothing that could be replicated here. That would be far too easy. [And Kitty wouldn't be here and having this conversation, presumably.] You aren't so easy to consult as a book, but I will have questions for you, when you want to answer them. If you want to answer them; I have no intention of holding you hostage until I know everything that you know.

[That is good to know. Not that she knows it. These are brackets after all.]

Probably not. And what makes you think I'm more trouble than a book? They're less fun to kiss.

[The important thing is that we know.]

You make a good point that I can't argue against, and the trouble would be to you, mostly, unless you like being asked questions whenever I think of them. Do you aspire to be a reference book?

[Go team us!]

I don't always talk about my dreams and aspirations after a first kiss, but that was probably somewhere on the list after ballerina and before yeoman taxidermist.

Look at how close we have become. Sharing kisses, talking about dreams. There is no one in this prison I would rather reference. [Did that sound dirty? It wasn't supposed to be dirty.] If I come up with any brilliant schemes to allow us to leave here, you will be the first person I tell.

You say the sweetest things. [And she didn't take it as dirty but every now and then she sees more Nathan in him than she means to and it can be jarring.]

And I'm glad to hear it, but you should probably know I don't actually want to leave.

[He's both curious and hesitant to pry. Even though not wanting to leave is understandable--it's a sentiment that he felt on several occasions in the City--there's usually a very interesting and oftentimes unpleasant reason for it.]

If I were to ask you why, would you be unhappy with me?

It would be a shocking lack of curiosity if you didn't.

I was about to die. One way or the other. And as much fun as going back to die sounds... I think I'll take my chances here.

There are some who would call it "courtesy" rather than a lack of curiosity.

[And he can't help but look slightly alarmed and sad before regaining full control of his face. Dying is serious business.]

No, please, do what you can to avoid dying. It's more unpleasant than false imprisonment. If a way is found to escape from here, though, it's very likely that that way would allow you to go to a universe where your death isn't imminent.

Yeah, that's been discussed before. [She even had an invite once upon a time. Not so sure it's still valid.] Guess we'll see when we get there, right?

When we get there? I didn't think that you were so optimistic.

[He isn't sure if they've known each other long enough to go making crazy offers, but, just in case:] If you find yourself with nowhere to go, I would offer my universe. You would not be the first person I have brought home from another world, and no one would be bothered by your powers.

[When did she get that optimistic? Then again, she was thinking "there" could be their way out or their final wall with a big sign saying, "abandon hope, this time we mean it." Still, her attitudes have shifted in her time in the prison. It might be because people she barely knows sometimes say and offer incredibly nice things to her like opening up their universe for her to join them in.

That might even be the kind of thing that makes it hard to speak for a moment. Best to cover such things by getting out a cigarette. Activity! And she does this constantly, so clearly it takes a lot of concentration. Can't be chatty during it.

Reid offered the same thing once. It was more intimate, and people in his world would not understand her powers. She'd probably get dissected if they caught up to her, but it came with the promise of a lot more than just a world to share. It was a life to share. And it's an offer that's probably off the table now.]

Yeah... Maybe.

Anyway, I should probably get going.

[Chekov, unsure of how to interpret this moment of intense cigarette retrieval, smiles faintly and takes a step back.]

Yes, of course. I hope that you won't be made to kiss anyone too unpleasant.

[Much like cigarettes she should really come with a warning.]

They haven't so far. [Which is a compliment if you look for it. She gives him a little nod before heading off.]
