It's so comically set up that he'd probably laugh at it for hours if it happened to someone else, but as it is there's little humor to be found in the situation. String of curses left like a bad taste in his mouth, Spike catches his balance in a cold stare at Jack. Well, fuck.

They both know how this works. He knows that the tension needs to break or they're not getting out of here, so why not try animosity. It worked so well last time.

"You planned this, didn't you?"

Jack gives him an incredulous stare. "Oh yeah, I deliberately got myself stuck in a forcefield with the guy who hates my guts," he says
sourly. "Because that's totally my idea of fun."

He glares at the bot, and if looks could kill, the little thing would be exploding in a shower of sparks right there.

"You've done stupider things."

He quirks a brow, finding himself actually... kind of enjoying the hatred in the air right now. It's something solid to hold on to. Some fumbling approach to normalcy.

"Besides, can you blame me? After the first time?"

"We've come a long way since then!" he protests, and doesn't complain (out loud, at least) that most of that progress has been negative as far as their relationship goes.

He sighs, and takes a step forward as the forcefield kicks him in the butt. "Come on then, let's get this over with."

They have come a long way. In the wrong direction, if you ask him and although he wasn't exactly interested in pursuing Jack's offer way back when, it was fun. There's nothing fun about this. Especially not now, when he doesn't have anything left with Jack. No goading, no banter, no nothing. It's boring.

Maybe this is a chance to turn it around. Fish a little.

"Don't you miss it..?"

It really is boring. He stares at Spike for a moment, in sheer surprise that he's actually talking about this, and then he lets out a little sound that's half-sigh, half-snort.

"Of course I do. Don't you?"

Hey, did he really think all that soul business would amount to nothing? Did he miss that there was a good man alongside the monster, even if he didn't get to come out and play very often? If so, this would be too sad.

"Of course." The answer comes perhaps a little easier than he wants it to, eyes locked with Jack's. There's still anguish in there, plenty of regret to boot but most of all a desire to get something back that actually made this whole messy prison business worth it.

"Told you... I would've been content, keeping that up."

For half a minute there, with blue eyes staring into his with some of the intensity that they used to (and of another, almost identical pair of eyes), he starts to hope there might be a way out of this, a way to connect again with Spike, a way to heal the rift between them.

Then Spike goes right back to that same old excuse, and he sighs heavily. "I couldn't let you keep on hurting people," he says tightly, lips pursed tight. "You know that."

Stalemate.

"I do know that. You're the great big hero after all."

The words are measured, but not unkind. He gets it. He has no choice but to get it, with all this guilt sloshing about his system but even with the soul in place, he never stopped thinking it was a disproportionate punishment for the crime. What's done is done, though. He can only cling to past transgressions for so long.

"You did what you thought you had to do... and now I can't harm a bloody fly. Problem solved, wouldn't you say?"

Not a punishment, but a solution. Wasn't that what Sam had said? A solution.

Well, a solution is what Jack was going for. Punishment was never really what it was about, for him. It was about keeping people safe, even if achieving that meant wiping away everything that was fun about their relationship.

The greater good, and all that.

But something about the way Spike phrases that suggests at last that he does understand, and Jack can't help studying him, wondering if perhaps there might, after all, be something left to enjoy. Not the same, of course, but something new, some new level of understanding, of shared experience.

He says curiously, with genuine interest rather than trying to poke at a wound, "How is that all working out for you, Spike? Have you managed to come to terms with it at all?"

That's something he's given up on explaining, after trying until he was blue in the face. What seems like a humane solution to the Defence Force will never stop being the cruelest possible punishment for him — if he had a choice, if he got the chance to do it himself, perhaps it would be different. But no, this is what they got. These are the cards he was dealt.

"Had a lit'le help, a while back... while you were running around all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed." He shrugs, tries to pass it off as no big deal, stance dripping with nonchalance when in reality this is the biggest thing that'll ever happen to him.

"Easier to sit through the boring parts of the movie when you already know how it ends."

Frankly, Jack's not even that concerned about how humane or not his solution was, only that it worked. There's always been a certain ruthless pragmatism about him in that respect.

Even his relief at the fact that Spike really does seem a hell of a lot more stable than he did right after the fact is more about keeping other people safe than Spike feeling better in himself.

"Yeah, Ianto told me that seemed to help," he nods, lips twisting briefly at the description of his younger self. "Nice of the wardens to help out, there!"

Speaking of whom, the bot is obviously getting impatient. Jack's been slowly edging in towards Spike but now he gets a great big push that sends him stumbling right into Spike for the second time in as many minutes. "Kiss!" the bot demands.

"Wouldn't call it help."

Not so much because it didn't help (it absolutely did) but he really doesn't want to give the wardens any cred, regardless if its deserved or not. Especially not since they keep releasing these damn bots on purpose and that happy metallic chirp is really testing the limits of his already fraying patience. Half-huffing half-growling out his annoyance, Spike reaches up to grab Jack by the neck and lay one on him.

A kiss, that is. Bruising, brutal, without hesitation. They're beyond all that.

For half a second, Jack freezes in surprise, because threatening bot or not, he never expected Spike to initiate the kiss.

Then his hands are clamping onto Spike's head and kissing him back, gasping for air and arousal soaring because that's the way John used to kiss him and, while he certainly doesn't get Spike and John mixed up any more, there are certain physical responses that are automatic where someone who looks and sounds and feels and smells like that are concerned.

Spike has so little left in this world but surprising Jack feels incredibly satisfying, perfectly balancing out the indignity of having to kiss him in the first place. It's a show of defiance if anything and he doesn't shy away from the kiss for a good long while, perhaps because he has a pretty good idea of what it does to Jack. Maybe he can't go back to how things used to be, but some things... some things they can salvage.

Caring little about whether or not the bot has released its papery load, Spike reaches up to clench a fist in Jack's hair. He's passive in so many things lately, but this won't be one of them.

It all feels good enough that for a minute or two Jack stops thinking all together and just feels, the hunger and excitement of the kiss awakening longings he thought he'd got over long ago. Not so much longing for Spike, although that's always been there in the background, but more a general love of anything dangerous and violent and thrilling. He loves Ianto and he's far happier with just Ianto than he ever thought he could be, but damn. He's missed this.

His fingers are curled into Spike's hair just as firmly as Spike's are in his. There's pretty much no way he's stepping back first.

This is going to be some kiss to remember then, both in intensity and length. Spike isn't too interested in backing away either, although his stubbornness stems in defiance rather than some dark erotic longing. For him it's a fight, with different weapons than usual perhaps but a fight nonetheless. A battle to reclaim the upper hand if only now and here and although the bot has happily dropped its colorful load, he's not stopping.

Instead he's pressing his free hand against Jack's chest, pushing him back against a wall with some force. Daring. Challenging.

He gives with the push at first, not quite registering it behind the rush of endorphins from the feel of a cool, hungry mouth against his, stealing his air, and the delicious sting of fingers tugging in his hair. But he gasps when his back meets the wall, goes still for a moment, and then he's breaking off the kiss to stare wildly at Spike, grinning, panting for breath.

Then his fist comes up to punch Spike in the face. He's not (quite) mistaking him for John, but it's how he and John used to make out and this is feeling very, very familiar.

There's a surge of satisfaction that Jack is the one to break the kiss, mixed in with relief because he really doesn't know how much longer he'd be able to keep that up. The punch that follows is like the sweetest reward and despite the way it makes his head snap painfully to the side, Spike really can't keep himself from grinning.

"That's more like it."

Wide swing coming your way, Jack.

"Oh fuck, yeah!" he responds, completely on instinct, and he doesn't even try to dodge the blow, letting it land and gasping as he feels pain blossoming out from the site where it landed, flooding him with endorphins every bit as powerful as the kiss did.

It's a moment before he can see clearly again, but when he can he goes for Spike again, this time barrelling into him in a full body blow.

He always has enjoyed full physical contact, in whatever form it takes.

It's a give and take he's been missing sorely. With the thing with Jack going sour and Buffy being gone, there's no one left to fulfill his need for a near-scripted brawl ever so often. The measured give and take, never stepping over the line between just enough and too much. The steady framework of a fight that makes him wait for Jack to get his bearings straight rather than taking the opening to pummel him further. The rules that mean that when Jack comes to knock him down, he goes down.

He hits the ground with a heavy thud and a choked off grunt, hands grasping at Jack's clothes as he tries to push himself off against the ground and roll them over.

It's very different from the last few times they've tussled - the mean and nasty fights concerning Spike's soul, and the hot and furious one when Jack had the red pearls. This, yes, is how it should be, free enough to be exciting and exhilarating but controlled enough that no-one gets badly hurt.

He whoops exultantly when Spike goes down, going right down on top of him, and wrestling to keep him down, to get his weight on top of him and get control of those flailing limbs. He's not really strong enough to keep Spike down if Spike doesn't want to be kept down, though, and it's not long before he finds himself on his back. He pushes and shoves upwards in his turn, grinning breathlessly, loving the sheer physicality of this, getting down and dirty. It's more fun than he ever expected to have again with Spike.

His vampire strength does put an unfair spin on this, even with as dampened as it is here. Normally that's an advantage but here, tangled up in a friendly brawl, he does make an effort to hold back. Not all the way, of course not, just enough to keep things interesting. He'll surely be aching by the end of this anyway.

Grunting, Spike tries to stabilize himself on top of Jack, firmly straddling him and clenching a fist in his clothes for balance. He pulls back, aiming a punch to the other mans jaw.

He sees the punch coming and does his best to twist out of its way, so that it slides along the edge of his jaw and into the ground rather than letting out all of its force into his face. Panting, he shoves up at Spike, scrabbling to get his feet under him and his knees up to lever the smaller man off him. He doesn't quite manage that, but he does manage to tip Spike far enough off him onto his side that he can start to slither out from under him.

And taunt, because it's what he does. "You know, for a self-professed straight guy, you sure do love sitting down on top of me!"

"Only someone insecure of his manliness would have a problem with that, Jack!"

And he's quite secure, most of the time. At least in that regard, if no other, he knows what he likes and he knows that sometimes, that isn't as straightforward as he's led to believe. No big deal, in a hundred years. Maybe Jack sees him as repressed but that's not really it either.

Muscles tense and wide grin firmly plastered on his face, Spike tries to grab hold of what he can. Shirt, coat, trousers, whatever scrap of fabric that'll keep Jack from getting too far away while Spike struggles to reclaim the top dog position.

"Besides... I like dangling what you can't have right in front of your nose."
