[You won't hear them coming. You won't see their snare. The mistletoe bots are out and they're hunting you, two by two. You can run and you can hide, but eventually you will be caught, and then there's nothing left to do but kiss your way out!

Chapstick stations will be available.]

He grins, eyes twinkling as he lifts her hand lightly to his lips. "Oh, sweetheart, I'm very impressive, even without the Captain part!" And the sort of person who can actually (mostly) get away with statements like that.

"Nice to meet you, Carol Peletier."

Meanwhile, the little bot who's been bobbing about in the corner while he worked out, waiting for someone else to come along, starts gently towards them, curious about that touch of lips to skin and wanting more.

"Seeing is believing, Captain." Good Lord in Heaven, she might actually be blushing. She can't even recall the last time someone kissed her hand like that. "Just Carol will do. It's a pleasure to meet you as well."

She doesn't notice the bot, though she is aware of them. She was introduced to joys of mistletoe bots with Ianto, in fact.

She's sweet. He grins, deciding he's going to enjoy this as, right on cue, the little bot throws up its forcefield and makes its request: "Kiss!"

Jack gives it a glance and then looks back at Carol with a wry shrug. "Oh dear, seems like a kiss on the hand just isn't enough for this little chap!" he observes, blue eyes dancing at her.

She sighs, but it's mostly for show. She's not disappointed. "If we must, we must."

If there's one thing the end of the world has taught her, it's take joy when it comes. You never know how long it's going to last. She takes a step closer.

"Oh, we absolutely must," he assures her, a wicked smile on his lips. He steps up to her and links his fingers lightly through hers to pull her in, and then holds onto them to give them both stability as he leans forward to press his lips lightly against her, warm and generous but relatively unnassuming, for Jack. Because she's sweet and he might like to get to know her better.

Carol lets him take the lead, though she presses back with a kiss of her own, gentle and affectionate, before pulling back. That was certainly world's over the quick little pecks she's been getting lately. Her smile lights up her eyes. "Okay. I'm impressed."

She really does have a wonderful smile. It's easy to smile back as he leans back and shakes his head to get rid of the confetti in his hair.

"Just as well!" he teases, rubbing the back of her hand lightly with his thumb before letting that go too. "Or I might think I was losing my touch!"

She takes a step back, brushing the confetti from her clothes. That was fun. It's not something she plans to make a habit out of, but she can get with the spirit of the day. "It was an interesting way to be introduced," she smiles. "Do you save your best material for days like today, or are you always this charming?" She feels like she already knows the answer.

"Oh, I am absolutely always this charming," he assures her, treating her to the classic Jack Harkness smile.

"Well, unless you're evil and planning to take over the world or hurt people or something," he adds, eyes twinkling. "Then I come over all stern and forbidding. But you're not planning any of that, are you?"

She scrunched up her nose. "Thought so." Not that it's a bad thing, what he's has going for him here.

"Oh no. There's nothing left of my world to take over." As for hurting people, well... Her smile remains, but it leaves her eyes. She'll leave that unsaid. Some evils are necessary.

Okay... A rather more serious response than he was expecting. His eyes soften.

"I'm sorry. Nothing left literally or figuratively?" Because there is at least a little difference between just losing everything you love and your planet actually being blown out of existence, though both can feel just as devastating.

"How about, somewhere in the middle? We suffered a global apocalypse. I'm not even sure how many of us are still alive. Pockets, here and there. Handfulls. Not many." She breathes a sigh and tries to smile again. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for that to happen."

"For what to happen? You to reveal that your world has been devastated?" He quirks an eyebrow. "I assume you don't mean you caused it?"

"Of course not." Her smile is softer now, more genuine. The idea is ludicrous. "A disease, I suppose. It brings the dead back. Their only purpose is to kill."

He blinks a bit. "Brings the dead back?" He can't help but focus on that part, at first, because it resonates so much with him, but it's not long before he moves onto the rest and he gives her a limpid, faintly disbelieving look. Not so much because he actually disbelieves her but because even with all he's seen it seems so unlikely.

"You mean... zombies?"

She's used to a variety of reactions. Disbelief is, surprisingly, rare, but not unexpected. The name he gives them seems so ... childish. Something out of horror movies and comic books. Maybe why they never called them that. "Yes. Though, we call them walkers. Roamers. Lurkers."

"All the dead? As in, everyone who's ever died? Or just those who've died recently?"

Forgive him for his rather professional interest in what is for you a highly personal matter, Carol!

"Not all the dead, no. Everyone who died when the event began, and everyone who has died since." Could you imagine if everyone rose from the dead? Well, the good news is many of the corpses would be too far gone to be a threat.

Oh, everyone rising from the dead can be done. It hasn't happened yet, in Jack's timeline, but there's a certain Time Lord who'll be attempting exactly that in just a few years' time, in his universe.

But Jack doesn't know about that yet, so the curious look he gives her is purely because of the odd resemblence to his own 'curse'.

"And it's all caused by a disease? So they're... sick before they die? How long does it take before they come back? Do they keep coming back if you kill them again?"

He doesn't really realise how sharply he's reeling off the questions.

She doesn't mind the questions, though they aren't something she really thinks about. The need to know why and how it all happened became less and less important as time wore on. It was enough just to stay alive.

"We're all ... we all have this ... thing. Disease. Infection. Whatever it is. We all have it. From what I understand, it's dormant, until we die. And then it activates." If that was the right word for it. "It only takes a few minutes. And then nothing will stop them. You have to destroy the brain. That's the only way to kill them for good."

"Wow. That's... harsh." He frowns, searching her face, recognising the inner strength there that she'd need to survive such a thing. "It's hard enough losing people, but to know they'll immediately come back and try to kill you..."

"I suppose it is." She's not trying to downplay it. It is harsh. Her world is a living nightmare. The weak don't survive. She had to be strong - inside and out. "Dead is dead. Those things that come back - those aren't people. They're not our neighbors or friends or daugh...daughters."

She chokes on the last word, stutters it out, and blinks a few times. She meant to say something else, she was sure.

"They're just monsters that need to be put down."

Oh god. His heart aches for her as he watches her stumble over that last word, memories of his own, similar, losses stinging him too.

"I'm sorry," he says quietly, and then, in an attempt to lighten and distract, he adds: "Sounds more like vampires than zombies, in a way. Except without being able to fight the thing causing the transformation. I assume you've got scientists working on the disease itself?"

She shakes her head. "Zombies. Definitely." As for the rest... She shrugs helplessly. "I would like to believe so, but I just don't know. Honestly, I don't dare to hope. It's far more likely they've all died by now."
