294 // beach mingle
[ Camping out on the beach is fun, right? Sleeping under the stars, lulled to sleep by the lapping of the waves and the rustling in the palm fronds. This isn't a refugee camp, this is a resort!

Several larger tents have been prepared on the beach. If this isn't enough there's a bunch of smaller ones ready to be set up, along with the permanent beach huts if tents aren't your thing. The makings of hot dogs and s'mores are available by the fire pits and if you have additional dietary desires, the convenience store isn't far away!

Enjoy! ]

(( ooc: Event information HERE! Please remember that if your character does not spend the night on the beach, they'll be forced to camp out on a park bench or in a coffee shop. The apartment buildings are off limits until next dayweek. ))

[Not quite so small. He was 14, but to be fair he hadn't really been eating well for probably going on two years.

He looks up at her]

I don't know what it is. Just drawing something.

[Looks like it might be a building of some sort]

[Gwen can't quite make out what the drawing is supposed to be. A building of some sorts, she could be wrong of course. Putting her hands in her pocket she looks at the boy, the youngest person she has seen this far. Granted of course she hadn't been there long.]

Could it be.. A House maybe?

[He glances up at her when she says that. He's still not quite sure what it is he drawing, but it was mainly because he was bored, not because he was really focusing on it]

I guess it could be.

[Sitting down seems like a good option. But not all the way, just... On her knees. She thinks of her training with the police. They've had training with this, talking to children.
She sits down so that she can look him in the eye, not stare down at him.]

It's nice, your-could-be-house.

[Picking up a stick she starts fiddling in the sand herself. Slowly drawing something that looks like a large curved wall.]

How old are you?

[He's seen that before with his dad since he was a cop back in their small town in King County, Georgia. He had used to do that when there were younger kids in the group. Now it was really just him. ...Well, that was depressing]

One of the places I've lived.

[He watches as she starts drawing as well]

Fourteen.

[Gwen looks at the boy. His eyes are old. Older than fourteen. ]

You've lived lots of places then?

[Fostercare perhaps. There are plenty of children who bounce back and forth, especially out in the projects. Tiny houses with more children and less space than should be allowed.]

[Well, she would have been right about the tiny house with more people than there should have been, but for a completely different reason]

A few. We had to in order to stay ahead of the walkers and stay alive.

[And since everyone always asked...]

Someone else here has said my description of walkers is a zombie.

Zombies?

[Well that wasn't something she had expected. How often do you expect zombies?]

So... The un-living walking the earth?

That is another way you could say it yes. They come after you and try to eat you.

That... That does sound like something you'd want to stay away from.

[Alright, brilliant. Relatable. Sort of. Almost.]

I suppose one could say you're safer here.

I can't picture anyone who'd want that.

I am safer here. Provided they don't show up at least.

I hope they don't. But... As far as I've noticed from the limited time I've spent here... The evils of the outer world doesn't seem to be spilling in. At least not yet. And if they come...

[She trails of. What? What if that sort of creature came?]

If they come they come. You're safe now and that's really all that matters.

Yeah, there's not much that we can do.

It's strange though. Not having to worry about them, but knowing others still are worrying about them.

I know the feeling. My loved ones are still back there, in the world. We dealt with... [Not zombies. Not something dead that was alive. Just... Aliens.] bad things too. And now everyone that dealt with them are in here, and the world has to fend for itself.

How are you sleeping?

[The question pops out oddly. It's not a natural question, perhaps not even an appropriate question. But it comes to her still, demanding its own existence.]

Sounds like your world is having some trouble at the moment too.

[He gives that a curious look when she asks that]

You mean how I'm sleeping today or how I manage to sleep?

How you manage, love. Do you have a lot of nightmares?

Sometimes, I'm not sure how. I used to have a lot more of them. I still do sometimes. Usually from when it first started.

And you're alright? With the nightmares I mean? [Finally her brain catches up to her mouth. Embarrassment wrapped in laughter covers her face.] Not that I think you wouldn't be! I just... Remember when my nightmares started. Sorry, I probably sound like a bloody lunatic.

[He shrugs] I can deal with them. I've seen it enough in real life.

It's fine. I'm sure there are people here who think I sound the same way.

I don't think there is a single person here who isn't some sort of lunatic. At least by what is defined as normal out there. So... Maybe crazy is the new normal?

[Looking down in the sand in front of her she draws some more in the sand. The dead rising again. She'd seen that too. But differently.]

How did you manage?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]anothermonster

It's hard to tell though. I mean others seem so normal... and there aren't many who have lived with walkers for the past year or so.

There are a lot of adults around, ones who at least on some level have been able to deal with this. My dad kind of lost it for a while, but he's better. Carol, the other person who is here, when we were at the prison she was teaching the kids how to defend themselves just in case

[Nodding slightly Gwen takes in his story. Tries to put together as much of the puzzle as possible herself. Giving herself a story with as few blanks as possible, so that she won't have to ask, and he won't have to answer. But one or two is needed to complete the picture.]

I've always thought [children] younger people where better at adapting than older. They have gotten stuck in their ways and can't reimagine.

A prison? You've been to another prison?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]anothermonster
2014-11-23 11:49 pm UTC (link)
I guess. There are people who have changed a lot. Carol used to be very different. Hershel used to be convinced that the walkers were just sick, that we'd be able to cure them and they'd wake up like nothing had happened. He had a barn full of them on his farm because he was waiting for the cure.

It was abandoned, aside from the walkers and a few prisoners who managed to survive. It was safe once it was cleared. Food supply, series of fences, watch towers. It was actually pretty sweet until people started getting sick and the guy from Woodbury came after us.

[Sorry, he keeps opening more holes in the story]
