Day 280 [Spike Resouling Mingle / open*]
[It seems peaceful enough on surface. Just another average evening in the dome. Get some new inmates, have lunch, put a vampire's soul back.

Tonight is the night. They'll either come together as the team she wants them to be or this will fall apart. She gave out the final assignments yesterday. Now, it's a matter of having a little faith that they'll all do their part, and this spell will work.

She can feel the weight of the stake on her belt. It's not that the wood is heavy, but what it represents is—a choice she'll have to make to whether or not to take someone else's choices away.]

(OOC: *Open in that there are areas for different people like those mentioned by name in this OOC organizational post are welcome to tag into the appropriate stage below. Unnamed force members are also welcome to encounter Spike early on or be stationed at the Headquarters. Non-DF players are welcome to tag into the Library thread as uninformed library goers who will be turned away.

Not a DF member, hate the library, and didn't get in on the ground floor, but you have an idea now? Please discuss it on the OOC post!

Well there's that question answered, then. Ianto supposes now is not the time to point out that letting a stake get involved in the proceedings was an exceedingly stupid idea. But he can save all that for later. Right now all he can feel is the way that look of pain on Jack's face is choking at his heart. He knows immediately what his plan is as he reaches for his gun and wonders how many times in his life Jack has had to do this to himself. He remembers the fear he felt when he learned he's going die and can't imagine how hard it must be to pull that trigger. There's not much he can do to help right now, but he can spare Jack that, at least.

His arm is still around him so it's easy to reach down with his other hand and close his fingers around the gun, pressing his lips briefly against his forehead before murmuring, "It's alright, I can do that. Just relax, it will be alright."

The fear of dying is a hell of a lot less when you know you're going to come right back again. Yes, it did take him a few decades before he got up the courage to try it for the first time, as a quick fix for injuries that would otherwise have taken a long time to heal, but it's almost second nature by now. He's a lot more worried about Ianto's reactions to watching it, because he's never had to before - never asked to. Jack's kept it private in the past, just turned up again bloodied but whole and grinning. This - letting Ianto in to what's become almost a ritual to him? That's a huge step.

And then Ianto blindsides him even further by trying to take the gun, and he stares at him in shock, heart beating even more crazily than it was before. "Don't be stupid," he says roughly, fingers tightening around the Webley beneath Ianto's soothing hand. "You don't have to do that."

He imagines it will be hard enough for Ianto to watch him killing himself; he can't even imagine how Ianto would cope with knowing he'd been the one to pull the trigger.

Ianto imagines it will be a lot harder once the trigger has actually been pulled than it is right now. But at the moment all he knows is that Jack trusts him enough to let him in on this. That there's not much the can do to help when he's hurt and there never has been but that he shouldn't have to go through this alone, not when he can make it a little easier for him in any way. That the longer they stand here sorting this out the longer Jack is slowly, painfully bleeding.

So he looks calm and reassuring and confident as he returns Jack's stare, even if his heart is threatening to face out of his chest. "I don't have to, but I can. You've done it enough. Let me help this one time."

Trusting Ianto enough to let him in on it is one thing; trusting him enough to pull the trigger and not mess it up is another. There's no way it's going to be easy for him.

But he's looking very determined, and Jack can feel himself weakening with every moment. He's really not in the mood to stand here debating this for ages. So after another moment of belligerant staring, he ducks his head and caves in, letting Ianto have the gun. "Okay. Just try not to miss? Or, if you do, keep shooting until I'm dead? Straight through the mouth to the brain stem's the best spot, but between the eyes should work too if that's easier."

"I'm a better shot than I used to be." He even manages a smile with the quip. Somehow he's even able to keep his fingers from shaking as he takes the gun. Mostly he's determined not to give Jack any reason to retest this decision. "I'll be here when you get back."

He leans in for a kiss, short but sweet and with just enough tongue to make it easy to replace his mouth with the gun when he steps back and pulls the trigger.

It's not so much his aim Jack doubts as the steadiness of his hands when shooting the man he loves. But he's committed, so he does his best to let go and let Ianto take charge, something that's not nearly as difficult as it would be if he wasn't in so much pain. He only pauses to murmur, "Take the stake out after I'm dead," because coming back with that still inside him would be a pain, literally, and then he gives himself up to the kiss, eyes closing, shoulders slumping, letting go. When Ianto's tongue retreats he leaves his mouth open for the cold metal, and he doesn't open his eyes. He's not as calm as he would be if he was doing this himself, because he's having to put his trust in someone else to do the job for him, but he's surprising himself by how okay he is with that. He just takes the barrel into his mouth, angles his head forward a little to make sure it's aimed right, and keeps his eyes closed.

And then he's gone, his body slumping, and sliding backwards off the muzzle of the gun to the floor.

Ianto does his best to catch Jack's body as he slumps against him, dropping the gun in his haste. The sound it makes as it clatters to the ground seems almost as loud and as shocking as the shot it followed. He ends up on his knees next to Jack's body and suddenly all the nerves and emotions he has been so successfully holding back slam into him all at once. There's blood on his hands and his shirt and he can feel it seeping into the knees of his jeans where he's kneeling on the ground. It's horrifically like Lisa, although of course he hadn't pulled that trigger.

There's a fuzzy sort of ringing in his ears and he feels like he might be sick but through it all he can practically see the hands of his stopwatch ticking away, counting down until Jack gets back. They both need him to be okay with this by then. He swallows dryly, mental clock still keeping count as he gives himself a few impossibly long seconds to be shaken up by this, to let everything run it's course as best he can before he starts picking up the pieces of himself and getting back to work.

His hands are shaking so badly it takes him several tries to get the stake out, and the sound it makes as he tugs it free nearly make him vomit. He chokes it down, tossing the stake aside and leaning back against the wall to put his head between his knees for a moment. Then he arranges Jack as comfortably as he can in his lap. He tries to brush the hair our of his face but regrets it when his fingers leave bloody smudges on his forehead. He gives up and focuses on regaining his composure so when that stopwatch does run out he looks as calm and alright with all this as he did before Jack died.

It's not nearly as unpleasant for Jack. Okay, so those couple of minutes of drifting alone - or not quite, possibly, alone, because he always feels there's something out there with him - aren't particularly fun, but there's no pain, and no real emotion. And then he can feel himself being hauled roughly upwards, up towards the light, and like breaking the surface of water after being held down at great depth he gasps in a breath and opens his eyes, seeing what he expected to see: Ianto, looking a little green (also expected) but determinedly calm and solid.

He smiles, and sits up. All the blood that was actually on his body - on his thigh and his stomach and in the hair at the back of his head - has gone, absorbed somehow back into his body as he healed. All that's left are two bloody tears in his clothes where the stake tore through them.

"All right?" he asks Ianto, concerned now that he has time and energy to be. He seriously doubts Ianto is actually all right with what he's just done.

Ianto will always be amazed by watching Jack come back to life. It's fascinating to watch his injuries close and clean themselves as if they never even existed. He holds him as he gasps back to life, desperately glad he's alright even though he knew he would be because he always is.

"All right." He replies, privately impressed with how together he sounds. He's still bothered by what happened, but he needs to seem alright with it right now for both their sakes. "You?"

"I'm fine." Physically, at least. Emotionally, he's still coming to terms with what's just happened too. There's a reason he's kept this sort of thing private in the past, and it's not just about protecting other people from unecessary grossness. It's also about protecting himself from letting other people in to witness him at his most vulnerable.

He swallows, and takes one of Ianto's hands in his, noticing the blood on it for the first time. His blood. His blood on Ianto's hands.

"I can't quite believe you just did that," he admits, with a slightly shaky smile.

Privately Ianto is glad Jack sounds just as shaken as he feels. It makes it a little easier to deal with than if he had been able to brush it off as casually as he always seems to with death. He clenches his hand tighter than in strictly necessary to keep his fingers from trembling.

"I just thought about how many times you must have had to do that to yourself, and I didn't want you to have to anymore." He sounds a little quiet, a little lost like he's not sure Jack will like that answer or even understand it.

"I didn't have to do it, it's just the easiest option and gets me back in the field quickly. You know I'm not a good patient." Quirking a wry smile at him, and then glancing down, at their joined hands.

"I thought you would try to stop me doing it. Not help me."

"I wouldn't have tried to stop you, not when you were in that much pain." Ianto replies. Maybe he fussed too much, made too big an issue of wanting to keep Jack safe. It feels impossible to strike a balance between worrying about death and pain.

He glances down at their hands as well, awkward and unsure and suddenly very conscious of the blood on his as he tries to think of how to explain what he's feeling. "I've seen you die so many times, and you never seem bothered by it. Like it's alright to let yourself be hurt and killed just because you can be. And I know how painful it can be for you to die, and that scared look in your eyes when you come back. I suppose I just feel like I need to take care of you because you don't take care of yourself."

Jack looks at him for a long moment, absorbing this, because there's quite a lot to absorb. Just how much Ianto has seen of what this does to him - quite possibly more than he's realised himself. How much Ianto understands what drives him to do it, even if he doesn't like it. All at once, he feels very humble.

He doesn't know what to say, but he knows what to do. He leans in slowly, his own (also still bloody) hands going out to gently clasp the sides of Ianto's head so he can kiss him: quietly, but deeply, without reservation, and with a lot of love.

Ianto makes a sound partway between a sigh and a sob as Jack kisses him, melting against him until he looses track of where each of them begins or ends. They've come a long way in their time here. He never would have been able to say any of that at home, and even if he has he doubts Jack would have accepted it like this.

He takes a few shaky breaths after breaking the kiss, remembering abruptly what led to Jack's injuries in the first place. "Did it work? The soul?"

As he kisses Ianto, and Ianto kisses him back, it feels almost as if a weight is sliding off his shoulders, another part of him he's been holding back from Ianto all this time and now he's letting Ianto have it.

God help him if he loses Ianto now.

He gives an odd little laugh as Ianto abruptly returns them to the subject at hand, and leans back, blinking a moment to try and clear his head.

"Yeah, it worked. I saw it go into him. Pretty weird to see, actually."

For now Ianto is content to stay curled up together on the floor. They've done enough for one day, let someone else deal with Spike for the moment. This moment together is important. A part of him is still freaking out about pulling that trigger but having Jack here like this makes it all worth it. To know he trusted him with something this important is stunning and wonderful and makes him forget about the fact that he's got blood on his clothes.

"What was it like?" And do they need to worry about more vampire attacks?

Jack's pretty content to stay right there too, for the moment. He may be physically recovered, but there's been a massive build-up to this and that's bound to have an impact, even without the emotional impact of what he and Ianto have just done together.

"It was like a little warm breeze went past me and into him, and his eyes glowed golden for a moment, and then he just sort of collapsed. Right on top of me." He grins, faintly. "Never ever thought I'd be hugging him right afterwards!"

"You hugged him?" Ianto asks, very skeptical and quite amused. He can't imagine that happening between Jack and Spike and somehow the image is a funny one. What's not so funny is his next question. "And just where did the stake come into play in all this?"

"I don't think he was really aware of who I was," Jack shrugs, wryly. "And comforting him seemed like the thing to do."

He gives Ianto a vaguely embarrassed look at the question about the stake. "Would you believe me if I told you he grabbed it off me?"

"What sort of state is he in?" He realizes Jack may not have had time to make a full analysis thanks to his injuries but even this badly hurt he can't imagine he would have left unless he was sure Spike was harmless, even momentarily.

That admission gets a very long suffering look. "Why am I not surprised? Let me guess, you spent too long giving some big heroic speech and he pounced." Not that he doesn't love Jack's big erotic speeches but there is a time and a place.

"Pretty docile, when I left. He just sort of... curled in on himself, like he had a lot of processing to do, which I guess is exactly what he's doing. He's hoping he comes out the other side of it a changed man!"

He meets Ianto's long suffering look with another self-conscious one, and doesn't correct his assumption. It's not, to his mind, that far off what actually happened, anyway. "Something like that, yeah. Fortunately, the soul arrived at just the right moment before he managed to get any further!"

((OOC: LOL @ Jack's big 'erotic' speeches! *g*))

"Well as long as changed means no more biting people I support it." Ianto replies, because frankly he thinks they've both had enough vampire attacks to last a lifetime.

He rolls his eyes at the admission, looking genuinely amused for the first time tonight. "Why am I not surprised? Next time maybe try not to hand the bad guy a weapon?"

((Sometimes I hat my autocorrect and sometimes, like now, it is beautiful.))

"Yeah, me too - on both counts!" he agrees, grinning. Even if he really did ask to be stabbed with a stake tonight. At least that bit of violence - even being on the receiving end of it - seems to have quelled that odd need within him for the moment. Perhaps it was just him getting all caught up in the excitement of the night.

He lets out a little sigh and shifts his weight in preparation for getting up. "I really should get back in there and make sure he's still okay. Then, if he is, I am taking you home for that celebration we were talking about before!"
