Day 280 [Spike Resouling Mingle / open*]
[It seems peaceful enough on surface. Just another average evening in the dome. Get some new inmates, have lunch, put a vampire's soul back.

Tonight is the night. They'll either come together as the team she wants them to be or this will fall apart. She gave out the final assignments yesterday. Now, it's a matter of having a little faith that they'll all do their part, and this spell will work.

She can feel the weight of the stake on her belt. It's not that the wood is heavy, but what it represents is—a choice she'll have to make to whether or not to take someone else's choices away.]

(OOC: *Open in that there are areas for different people like those mentioned by name in this OOC organizational post are welcome to tag into the appropriate stage below. Unnamed force members are also welcome to encounter Spike early on or be stationed at the Headquarters. Non-DF players are welcome to tag into the Library thread as uninformed library goers who will be turned away.

Not a DF member, hate the library, and didn't get in on the ground floor, but you have an idea now? Please discuss it on the OOC post!

[Jack loses his balance when the kick doesn't land, staggering a bit, but he wrenches the holy water out of his pocket anyway and flips the lid up with his thumb, thrusting its contents towards Spike. He was aiming for the face, because he's not sure how well it works on covered skin, but he stumbles as he throws and only a little splashes onto Spike's face, most of it hitting the beloved leather coat instead.

He staggers backwards out of range, hoping the surprise of it will at least give him time to regroup.]

[ It may as well have been a bottle of acid that he just threw with the way it hisses on contact with Spike's skin, tendrils of smoke rising from his face and hands. The coat protects him well enough but water has a habit of dripping and it's near impossible to keep it away from his skin. He howls in pain, ducking his head and moving away from Jack just so he can get a chance to not be on fire. ]

[Jack stays back for the moment, just watching, fascinated. He hadn't really known what to expect, and this is just... amazing. He grins down at the little bottle in his hand. Thank you, Sam. Then he chucks it aside and strides toward Spike, grabbing a handful of that stiffly gelled hair and smirking into his face.]

Right. Going to be a good boy now and sit still while you're waiting for your soul to find you?

[Well, Kitty will be mad if he doesn't give Spike a chance to behave. Even though he knows the way he's phrased it, there's no way in hell Spike will take that option.]

[ He snarls and spits as Jack grabs him, half-blinded by pain and the sizzling water that's still on his skin. A part of him wants to kick and punch and bite until there's nothing left of Jack but a wet mess on the floor, while another, albeit smaller but much more noticeable part is starting to give up. It doesn't matter what he does. If they have his soul — and he suspects that might be true, with the tingles running down his spine — he can kill half the dome and still not escape.

If he hadn't been tricked in here, if he had only been able to reach the witches circle, if if if- ]

Go to hell, Jack. They like people like you down there.

[Well, that's no fun. He wants a fight, not Spike snivelling in a corner. He smirks.]

Actually, they don't like me there. They keep sending me back.

[He lets go of Spike's hair with a shove, and takes a step back, pretty much dancing with restless energy. He's all revved up and if this is the last chance he's going to get to tussle with Spike (because that is the idea, after all) he wants to make it count.]

Come on, Spike, that all you're going to give me? You're not giving up, are you?

That's a shame. I know plenty of demons who'd have a blast picking you to pieces! [ The lack of satisfaction at threatening very real hell dimensions to someone who doesn't even know what you're talking about is a great one.

He stumbles back at the shove but catches himself quick enough, aiming a vicious glare at Jack across the room. There's something sickeningly sadistic about this whole setup. Unsportsmanlike, not unlike waiting in the hallway with a baseball bat. The Slayer would never have done that and her entire existence was aimed towards killing off scum like him — but she wasn't cruel. Never cruel. She knew the rules and she played by them just as much as he did and that is exactly what he's been missing since Buffy disappeared. No one around here knows the steps to the dance they've been dancing for millennia and now this poofed up hero is getting his rocks off on torture.

Disgusting. ]

Angelus would've loved you. [ He spits, pacing restlessly but not attacking. Not giving you the satisfaction, Jack. ]

[Jack definitely plays by a different set of rules to the Slayer. There's always been something a little sadistic and ruthless about Torchwood and, however much Jack likes to think he's better than them, he has it too. Even though it might not be showing quite so much if he wasn't being affected by that pretty little red pearl he picked up.

And perhaps not so much either if Spike hadn't shown himself to enjoy sparring, whether verbal or physical, on every previous occasion. It's not so sadistic if they both get a kick out of it, is it?

But Spike's not fighting now, and Jack doesn't know enough about Angelus to really get the point of that last comment. He frowns across the room at Spike, vaguely disappointed.]

You're really not going to fight back? What happened to "You think a wooden door can hold me?"

[ It was different back then. An even playing field, both of them had the possibility of backing off and in the very beginning, there was a possibility of something mutually beneficial growing between them. Those times are long gone though. A lifetime away and the look he gives Jack in this moment is one of nothing but hatred and disgust, a defiant glare from a man who's just waiting for the axe to drop. ]

What does it matter? I kill you, you bounce back. I get out, your lit'le Scooby gang lie in wait and even if I wash the floor with their blood I can't outrun a soul. [ He snarls, clenching and unclenching his fists. ] You have it all figured out, don't you Jack? So why don't you get your jollies while you can still justify it as the right bloody thing.

[Jack gives him an odd look, and some of the fight goes out of him, too. Trying to goad someone into a tussle is one thing, but beating up someone who really isn't going to fight back is quite another. He sighs a little, and takes another step back, folding his arms.]

Well, I guess it's nice to see you do have some sense, even without a soul. [Not that it's going to be long now before he does.] Now, if you'd only shown you could restrain yourself earlier, we might have been able to avoid all this!

[ His jaw sets at that, fury re-sparking in his eyes and damn if he doesn't want to tear Jack limb from limb, pull strip by strip of flesh of his bones until there's nothing left but a sticky paste. Watch him reassemble and then do the whole bloody thing again and again and again. It's the kind of hot white hatred that makes his hands shake. ]

I. Didn't. Kill anyone. [ This is what restraint is. Who knows how long he would've behaved if this whole thing hadn't escalated. ]

Not the point!

[How is Spike still missing the point? He jabs a finger in the air towards Spike.] You hurt people! People who'd done nothing to you. And you killed me. Twice! Okay, the second was in a fight that could have gone either way, but the first time? You attacked me, for no reason, just like you attacked all those other people. And heaven knows, there are enough dangers here without people being in danger from other prisoners! So if you can't stop yourself hurting people without a soul, the only option is to give you one!

What about you, Jack? You never hurt people, right? That's just not in you because you're a goddamn bloody hero! [ He snarls, spits, tempers rising high as if in a pressure cooker. This is the thing. This is the damn thing he keeps coming back to — heroes thinking they're beyond fault because they're righteous when in reality, there's so little separating them. Lines blur so easily and that's the way life is.

Besides, that first time... that was just for fun. That was playing on what they already had growing and, perhaps, taking it too far. He could admit to that much but he will not be counting that one as an attack. ]

If you have a single shred of mercy in you, stake me now because what you're about to do is worse than anything I could ever think of. [ Tone tense, labored, frightened because he's seen what this does up close. ]

Still missing the point! [And that, after all, is why he's doing this. In the hope that, once he has his soul back, Spike will be able to see the difference in hurting people for fun and hurting people to stop them hurting others.

What Spike says then, though, brings him up short. He studies Spike, head on one side, intrigued by the sheer level of his fear. Then he reaches inside his coat, shaking his head with a wry smile.]

Not going to happen. But I tell you what. [He brings out the stake and tosses it to Spike.] You can stake yourself if the idea of it is really that bad.

[Watching him closely. Will he? Somehow, he really doesn't think so.]

[ He catches the stake easily enough, flipping it over in his hand and feeling its weight. Not the first time. Far from it, he knows precisely what this little toothpick can do to a person and for a moment, maybe it'll really seem like he's considering it. It's a tough way to kill yourself, hard to get the force and momentum going to break through the ribs. You can't miss, after all. Has to be a clean stab to the heart or it won't take. It takes planning, knowledge, guts...

Oh come on, like he's even considering it.

He will however lunge out, movements fast and decisive, like a cobra striking after waiting for its prey to get in just the right position. Pointy end aimed outward he stabs hard, aiming to bury it deep in Jack's stomach rather than his heart and if he can puncture a lung in the process, even better. Thank you for giving him a weapon. That was real kind of you. ]

[Oh, come on Spike, you didn't think that wasn't deliberate, did you? Jack's still itching for a fight and he really didn't expect you to have the balls to actually off yourself! He just wanted to get you back into the fight.

He laughs when Spike finally moves, dancing out of the way. Or at least, trying to. He's kind of forgotten just how fast Spike can be. So while Spike doesn't get anywhere near his lungs, the stake does strike into his thigh, making him stumble and fall, grunting hard at both the pain and the winding impact with the floor.]

[ Maybe some day Jack will find out about Xander's basement and Hawaii shirts and really pathetic suicide attempts, but today is not that day. Partially because Spike doesn't really have all those details either. Thigh is about as good as anything and he makes an effort to drive the stake a little further into the muscle, putting his weight behind it as he lets himself fall with Jack. Being on top is infinitely preferable so he'll scramble for dominance, attempting to straddle the other so he can pull the stake out and penetrate some other non-lethal part of him. ]

[He does his best to angle his fall so that Spike won't land right on top of him, but doesn't wholly succeed and Spike ends up half over him. He can feel Spike's weight forcing the stake into his leg and rather than try to struggle and make that pain worse, he instead takes a moment to focus, drawing his arms in and then launching one of them up at Spike's jaw in a very nasty uppercut.]

[ Doesn't that rattle his brain. His head jerks back as the blow connects and he can taste blood on his tongue, but that only serves to fuel his determination. Growling deep in his throat he wriggles and crawls to get better purchase, eventually pulling the stake clean from Jack's leg and aiming another hit to his side. ]

[There's a very definite satisfaction to feeling that blow connect, and to Spike's reaction to it, the evidence that it's hurt him, and it's possible that he spends precious seconds gloating about it when he should be trying to wriggle out from under Spike. He does start squirming, but rather late, which means the stake gets him again, in the side below his ribs, driving in deep.

He cries out, shoving up at Spike brutally with the strength that comes from pain. And then something happens. It's so small, so anticlimatic after all these weeks of work, that he almost misses it. It feels as if an odd, warm breeze brushes past him and slams into Spike, and for a brief moment Spike's eyes glow golden.

And then it's gone.]

[ He knew it was coming. He knew there was no way to avoid it and he was prepared as much as he possibly could be and still it catches him by surprise when it finally does arrive, lighting his insides up with such a scorching heat that his body seizes up for a moment.

It's indescribable, the sins of well over a century flooding back in, demanding payment. Overwhelming his system to the point where he just goes limp, crumbling on top of Jack without care or ability to direct himself. For all his bad poetry, for all his snarky remarks, words will continue to completely fail him when it comes to describing this very moment, when soul and demon is forced together in one chest. ]

[Even if he almost missed the moment the soul impacted, there's no way he could miss Spike's reaction to it. He watches, his heart in his mouth, as Spike stiffens for a long moment - and then grunts as Spike's full weight comes down on him. Luckily, the stake lodged in his guts is far enough to the side that Spike doesn't actually fall on top of it, because the pain of that would probably have made him black out too. As it is, he just lies there helplessly beneath Spike's dead weight, panting through the pain, one hand going to his side to the stake (to stop it moving any more; no point in actually pulling it out and bleeding to death), the other, after a minute, coming up to wrap around Spike's limp body.]

Spike?

[ He groans weakly at the sound of his name, only barely aware of what's going on around him right now. It's a shock to his system, something they never really warned him about when it came to Angelus but all things considered it's not that surprising. The arm around him focuses his attention to the fact that he's not alone and he tries to push himself off, muscles trembling and twitching but not really doing all that much to actually move him. ]

[Jack hasn't been sure what to expect either, which is why Spike's currently locked up, after all. But so far as he's been able to imagine, though, this is mostly what he's imagined: Spike being overwhelmed by it all in the immediate aftermath.

Which is why, instead of trying to help Spike off him he tightens that arm wrapped around Spike and pulls him back down again. What's a little more weight when breathing's becoming difficult anyway? And he really doesn't have the strength to push Spike off right now.

He doesn't try to speak - what could he say? - but just holds Spike firmly, trying to help him through it the only way he can.]

[ He's going to have to hold on for quite some time if he wants to succeed with that. This is an agonizing burn, slow and instant all at once, making him whimper and curl up on top of Jack like a wet puppy. If he can't leave then he'll just have to stay here, so helpless that he can't even feel bad about his pathetic state. ]

[He does his best, but there comes a point where Spike's weight becomes a little too much to bear, and he shifts slightly beneath him, tapping his back to try and bring him back to reality a little.]

Spike? Sorry, but I'm going to - need you to - move!

[Even if movement of any kind is about the last thing he wants right now. It's going to fucking hurt.]
