[Phanan's not too stupid or caught up in his own mess to notice how upset she seems but he never knows how to talk about these things. He tends to just hide his own depression, loneliness and more than occasional thoughts of death behind all that insanity and sarcasm so he doesn't have to figure out how to express them to other people and he's not about to start now. He does let some of it crack through the mask he usually forces himself to wear and show on his face though, all anxiety and hurt around the metal. This was nice, in a weird way, and he doesn't want to make it bad. Also, was the confetti really necessary?]

We don't have to talk about it or anything, you know. It can just be a thing that happened. [Its so rare that he's serious it sounds like a stranger speaking.]

[ She stays close for a moment longer, leaning forward until her forehead rests against him. Sniffles some. She's not crying, but she kind of wants to. It's been a long... forever and although she's always been a big advocate for hugs, she didn't realise just how powerful a catharsis physical contact can be. ]

Hmn... [ With that she lifts her head to look at him, forcing a smile. ] Thank you.

[ She reaches up to pluck some confetti out of his hair before pushing herself up on her toes, planting a soft kiss on his cheek. Perfectly platonic. ]

[For a moment he just holds her, silently enjoying how good it feels. He wants to ask about the sniff, to find out just why this meant so much to her but he's scared to ask and even more scared he might have to answer similar questions about himself. The kiss on his cheek is unexpected and sweet and he smiles, slowly slipping those defenses back up into place because that's the only way he can get by.]

The confetti sort of seems like overkill, huh?

[ If he did ask, she'd tell him the whole depressing story because it was never a secret. Hell, she's spilled her guts to enough people by now that she's almost surprised there's anyone left who doesn't know, but now doesn't seem like the right time to spontaneously start talking about her situation. There's something quiet and unspoken. She didn't miss that this affected him as much as it did her. ]

Tell me about it! [ She exclaims in a half-laugh, maybe to outweigh the gravity of the situation. ] It's just a kiss, no need to put on a parade!

	Well frankly I think most occasions call for a parade so I'm probably not a very good judge of that. [He's just a little too cheerful and snarky too, overcompensating a bit for the situation. 	Yeah, I've heard they do that. I've got friends on my squadron but we don't get out much. [12 good friends, actually, which is sort of pleasantly surprising when he stops to think about it.
