Wonderland Event — Dome-wide mingle
[ There were blankets set out in the lush parks of the prison, and on top a feast was spread out. Fine china and chubby pots of tea, delicate cake trays filled with tarts, biscuits and sandwiches; yes, anything the hungry and weary prisoners could wish for was laid out for their convenience.

The sun was shining brightly and a playful breeze rustles the leaves of the trees. Surely a wonderful day for a tea party! ]

"Yes, that." It's said with a distinct hint of distaste to the tone. Jean-Luc tries to cover it up with another sip of his tea though. He hates that he'd been the source of trauma for Helen in any way whatsoever. But he also knows how hard he fought internally to keep information about her from Locutus. He knows that had he not, it could have been so much worse.

"Unfortunately, while they were my hands doing the deed," Which just saying out loud brings with it the weight of guilt, not just at what Helen was feeling about all of this, but the weight of all the lives that Locutus had actually ended at his hands at one time. "I was not in control, so to speak. As most things are, it's much more complicated than that."

He sits back, crosses one leg over the other to take on a conversational stance, one that says he's at ease when inside he's anything but. "I do apologize to you though, and I will to her as well."

James shakes his head at that, noting the distaste how he's acting and okay, so maybe Helen had been right about things. Picard sounded as if he believed he had no control over what had occurred and his actions, he's voice well it's enough for him, and he can't deny that drawing comparisons between them has made him a little well, soft perhaps, in dealing with Picard. He knows how he would act if he harmed Helen in such a way and perhaps, with something else going on, perhaps he wouldn't have been so strong as to show up in public to deal with it. The Five, as brilliant as they are, aren't exactly master of dealing with their issues, not when it came to one another.

He rubs his hands together just then, giving Picard an appraising look, and if he gets the impression James is attempting to figure out something then he would be right. How far will he have to go to explain why he's worried?

"Things in my experience usually are, however emotions blind us to other causes and other solutions. I am as much at fault as you are." He may have had the full intention on coming over and causing physical harm to Picard and dealing with the consequences. But it's also an apology of sorts, for jumping to conclusions without asking Picard first about things. "Recent experience, primarily with Helen, has taught me that. No apologies are needed, but perhaps explanations on both sides may be in order. Especially if Helen is considering you hers." There's a brief, very brief flash of envy there that he quickly tries to hide, because he's still Helen's cousin to Picard.

"Hers? Well, yes that's quite..." He clears his throat, clearly unsure of how to deal with others approaching him about what is going on with him and Helen. There are some moments when he's more sure of it than others. Back in his Starfleet days he had been quite the lady's man. But once he had made his choice, career over a personal life, he had never quite known how to get back into the mindset of romantic attractions. He had his moments, of course, with Vash and Beverly. But those moments were few and far between.

He decides on an easier course of discussion, explaining the Borg in a detached sort of way. "The Borg are cybernetic beings that hail from the Delta Quadrant. They destroy worlds, assimilating each individual on each world into the collective to create a hive mind where the entirety of them act and think as one. No individual thought. As Captain of the Enterprise, I made first contact with the Borg. It was quite by accident, I assure you. However, the circumstances were out of my control when we ventured into their space. It alerted them to our existence, unfortunately. And they came in pursuit of us a year later."

He inhales a deep, uncomfortable breath. "I was... chosen. I was assimilated and given a name, which was a rare thing within the Collective, to have a name. They used me in an attempt to open a dialogue with the Federation, my people, in the hopes that it would lessen their resistance to assimilation. They called my drone self Loctutus of Borg."

It's an accurate assessment of Picard and Helen's relationship though, isn't it? James can't help the smile at how the other man avoids that, knowing exactly how it feels especially as Helen had well, okay had more then made it clear they were a thing for a time. That didn't make it any easier to talk about however and he could understand in a way, Picard's reluctance to discuss it with someone other then Helen. Not that it would stop him at all but he did understand.

But for now he'll let it go, let the man explain what he feels comfortable saying and then explaining his side of things to Picard. While he cares for Helen dearly he has little faith in her explaining certain things to Picard in detail, the sort of thing he should know when dealing with her on such a level. Though he's also rather certain this Helen will have words with him later, Helen is well, Helen after all, no matter the time.

Picard's explanation is in itself helpful and confusing, there are certain things said that he doesn't understand, having little reference to it all because of his time period and he finds himself grasping for explanations. What he doesn't understand immediately he puts together his best guess and puts away the confusing bits (cybernetics, Delta Quadrant, Federation) to the side and makes a note to ask about them later. Much later.

"The worst things to come are always unintentional on our parts, at least in my experience." He can't judge since it was the Source Blood that unleashed what John was and perhaps what could have been held back longer. He's under no illusion that John was a saint and at some point he would have had to do something about him. "And this Locutus, this drone self, that is what you were, here?"

It's extremely uncomfortable for him to discuss, Locutus and the Borg. That discomfort only really shows through in the way he shifts in his seat as if the seat itself were causing his discomfort and not the topic of conversation, as if he just needed to change positions to be more comfortable.

"The Borg, when they assimilate an individual, they replace much of their internal organs with circuitry and mechanics. I was never fully assimilated, but they did enough harm that when I was liberated they were unable to undo some of what was already done." Implying that he still had quite a bit of Borg technology inside of him.

He smiles a bit as he begins the next it of this saga. "You might find it difficult to believe, but when I was a younger man I was quite brash and cocky. Needless to say this found me in many an interesting situation, one of the most profound, a bar fight on Starbase Earhart with a group of Nausicaan's over a rigged game of dom-jot."

He rests his hand over the center of his chest. "A dagger right through the heart. They rushed me to the medical facility and replaced the now useless organ with an artificial heart." His heart is mechanical, yes. An advanced form of technology even in his own time. "It has failed on me once. This was the second time. And this time, there was no superior medical staff to repair the damage in time. From what I understood from my crew here within the prison, the Borg tech compensated and kept me alive with the added displeasure of reawakening Locutus."
