Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

The question is how much adapting we're capable of doing... [ Sigh. ] Not that we have much of a choice. We can only hope this is as temporary as they've led us to believe and that we really will go back to MarinaNova at the end of it.

[ her smile is brittle and laced with only a hint of fear. She is far too used to hiding her emotions behind her woman's mask. ]

I'm afraid if we don't adapt, the options are not many. Indeed, I fear if something were to happen, far too many lives would be lost, based on the files you've maintained at the headquarters.

[ and loss of life by all accounts seems to be a permanent affliction in this place as Peggy would naturally suspect. One does not Usually come back from the dead. ]

[ Good thing he's a profiler then, adept at peeking behind even well-constructed masks. ]

I can't argue with that... they do have the upper hand as far as life support goes. It doesn't exactly leave us much room to maneuver.

Quite so. Our lives are in their proverbial hands. I suppose I should be grateful however. We are still alive.

There is that... some of us are even better off here than they would be at home. A blessing in disguise, I guess.

[ she raised a brow ] And yet one still has to wonder what good bringing us all here will do. Surely you can't truly believe our... doubles are capable of avoiding every crime that has been leveled against ourselves, do you?

Well... that would depend on which theory you're a fan of. For all we know there are no doubles, only one or several timelines where we didn't make the decisions that landed us in underwater prison in the first place.

Actually, while we're on the subject... I'd be careful about trusting that this is a prison on the first place.

[ well that certainly took her by surprise and every other thought is completely thrown out of her head. ]

You don't believe it's a prison? Then what else might it be? [ In truth, she had never questioned this simple fact despite the stark differences between it and the POW camps she was much better acquainted with. ]

Look at the facts — the only evidence we have that this is a prison aside from that we're imprisoned is the reality they wish for us to believe. They call us criminals, dress us up in orange jumpsuits and give us a list of crimes. Sometimes those crimes are legitimate but more often than not they're circumstantial — there's nothing illegal about me killing someone in the line of duty. It's part of my job and although the act itself can certainly be construed as murder, the circumstances make it not so.

The "prison" itself isn't very prison-like. This right here is the closest we've ever been to traditional prison conditions and this is a temporary arrangement, if we can believe the warden's word for it. Back there we're encouraged to get an education, find employment, live happy and fulfilled lives... it's comfortable, as if they're trying to get us to want to stay.

If anything, I'd guess that this is a psychological experiment. Multi-dimensional as it may be, that's much more likely than a traditional judicial incarceration.

[ she let the words settle around her as she tried to match up what he said and what she knew and could truthfully find no hole in his logic. ]

I believe I understand what you're saying, but regardless of the true reason for our abduction, we are still imprisoned. That much, at least, seems to be true.

However... if this is an experiment, what do you suppose their end goal to be? Surely it's not just to see how well we cooperate when faced with luxury over hardship. Or... [ she paused, thinking back to conversations she's had with Tear. ] Perhaps this is simply to see if the AI's are capable of adapting? I was told that the previous dome had some particularly interesting developments in that area.

If you're talking about Sentience, I wouldn't rely too heavily on that theory. Sure, the official word is that he was promoted due to fulfilling his goals and yes, he was certainly more human in behavior than any of the others we've been in contact with so far but the timing is suspicious at best.

Think about it. Sentience imprisoned the Engineers because he believed they were guilty of a crime. They in turn oust him from power and put Acumen in his place. Then Sentience led the coup that changed the power over again, followed by his "promotion" that ultimately lead to us being transferred to a new prisons with an even higher security level in regards to the AI.

You really think that was a reward?

[ she raised a brow ] I never meant to imply it was a reward, but rather simply seeing how well their... creations adapted after prolonged exposure to us. If they are intelligent as their title suggests, they should have the capability of changing along with us, I would assume?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Then how do you explain the transfer? If prolonged exposure is what they're after, it wouldn't make any sense to break that up and put us in an entirely new environment with new wardens.

There was nothing wrong with the old facility as far as I know, and even if they wanted to move us because of the security breach I assume it would've been easy to transfer Sentience or Acumen along with us.

[ she started to speak and then simply shook her head. ]

I'm afraid those questions are beyond my ability to answer. You have certainly given me something to ponder however.

[ she flashed a smile ]

I can see now why Penelope recommended I talk to you. You certainly do make one think. [ and that's a good trait, in her opinion ]

Indeed. It's a bright spot amongst so much trouble.

[ but then she's distracted when the kiosk for the food rations open up. Sending an apologetic look towards Reid, she quickly presses her thumb o the scanner as she's seen the one before her do just moments before. ]

It truly has been a pleasure, Mr. Spencer. I look forward to hearing what other theories you have on our situation, if you're at all amenable to the idea.

[ she nodded ]

And may we soon find better circumstances soon. [ she glanced down at her rations and began to gather them up ] Otherwise we may find ourselves desperate.

[ she nodded to Reid, then and began to go her separate way. He surely had his own hands full with a day like today. ]
