Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

My interest is captured by other things, I'm afraid. [ his eyebrows draw down just a bit as if in mild consternation. ]

You need not care for me. [ it's almost a command, and he means it not just in this sense, but in all senses. he doesn't want more attachments that he must have, and that includes others' attachments to him. it occurs to him that he probably should have avoided kissing this girl if he didn't want that to happen, but. what's done is done. and the dome made him do it! clearly marina is always at fault. ]

Of course I need not. It is an offer freely made, and freely rejected if that is what you wish to do, without any inherent expectation. [She doesn't even expect basic kindness from him anymore, honestly, but it won't stop her from being who she is.]

Similarly, you need not concern yourself with my becoming irrevocably attached to you. [She's offering to cook breakfast, an act that requires little effort on her part and she presumes would be appreciated. But if not, she'll move along.]

A relief! I would question your judgement if you did. [ or possibly become incredibly intrigued by her. in any case, he could have taken that declaration as an insult, but he actually finds it quite agreeable, even appreciates it in a way. he is hardly a kind man, but he can extend much civility to her for not pressing him. ]

But you must know that I do not intend to eat today— or at least not for the moment. The body protests, I'm afraid. [ he doesn't let on that he is truly, truly ill, content to let her think that it's simply the move wreaking havoc on him somehow, but assumes that the casual allusion to his condition will make him seem like a bit less of an ungrateful twit. ]

[She seems to find his worlds amusing.] I expect you will question my judgment regardless, Piter, so I may as well do as I like. But whatever feeling inspires my desire to help you, it would not expect anything of you in return. [Whether she's implying she has no desire to see her friendly affections returned, or implying some lacking on his part, remains ambiguous.]

[Her usual questions remain unspoken as he refuses her offer, but she looks she gives him is discerning as ever. It's difficult to hide things from her entirely.]

When you do intend it, then.

Perhaps this evening. Perhaps tomorrow. Perhaps a day from then. [ or perhaps never again, if things continue for too long. but he meets that discerning look of hers, hiding in plain sight almost impudently. ] I've little way of telling.
