Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

I wonder that regularly.

[There were...a lot of reasons. Just when he was ready to do just that Spike would show just a little too much something. And there were Buffy's feelings and leadership to consider and Dawn's feelings. And maybe for all Xander's talk it felt just a little too much like murder and not enough like dusting a monster the longer it went on and the less Spike could defend himself. It didn't mean he wouldn't. Give him the right circumstances and something pointy!

...But "the right circumstances" are getting fewer and farther between especially now that some of those memories of Xander's are of a guy sacrificing himself to save the world...or at least the girl they both care a lot about.]

[ Xander, he can't read your mind and if he could there would be attempts at punches in your future. Maybe.

But perhaps this is what their relationship comes down to. A mutual dislike so strong that it lingers even when there's no reason for it to stay. Right now he's happy for the animosity, it makes it all that easier to ignore what Buffy and Dawn and Oz and even Cordelia back when she was around were trying so hard to tell him — that he has the potential to be a hero. A good guy. Even more so that he'll choose it voluntarily because he genuinely believes it's what he's supposed to do, but as long as Xander continues to treat him like the asshole he is... as long as that happens, he can pretend that's the only truth that matters.

He's the Big Bad. William the Bloody. It's a path he's been on for a century and no blond, perky little Slayer will push him off it and as long as at least one other person believes that, he can too.

At least for now. At least for a little while longer. ]

[Spike isn't the only one glad for the animosity. He's never been buddies with Spike even when he was living with him or working alongside him, but he was okay with him. Sometimes he was too okay with him as Spike himself would point out. And then he hurt Buffy by trying to take advantage of her and that was the kind of thing you never forgive. Not with his girls, with Buffy. But it's not like he missed the part where that happened sans soul.

And then there was more working together and more saving the world together and that sacrifice thing. So if Spike were back from that moment or right before it ~~or after if he knew that was a thing~~ then they might have a different relationship now. Something with less fighting. Something less familiar and comfortable. As it is, this is just easier. Spike can be the bad guy he's not terribly concerned about and Xander can take out his uncertainty and frustration on him. Everyone wins!
