Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

[ It is pretty obvious, especially knowing what he knows. Of course, it could be something else — fatigue, discomfort from the events of the morning, migraine... but his mind immediately jumps to one conclusion. ]

Withdrawal? [ Softly. Quietly. This stays between the two of them. ]

[ there's a tense moment of silence that he fills by simply staring at reid, eyes dark and cold. a part of him hates reid for knowing.

when he speaks, his voice is equally quiet, but imbued with a sort of distance and frigidity, as if trying to keep all of this at arm's length.
] Another few days, and I will be dead.

[ He knows that tone of voice. Might've even had a version of it himself at times, although his was a fair bit shakier. Speaking of, there's the slightest of trembles working its way into his as they speak. Disbelief. Fear. ]

They wouldn't do that... would they? They wouldn't just... let you die.

[ piter can sense the fear in reid's voice all too well, and finds it somewhat out of place; it's still strange to think that reid has some kind of misguided care for him. it's strange and unwelcome to think that anyone would. ]

Perhaps they presume it recreational. Perhaps they presume that I continue to take it because I think it amusing. [ bitterness creeps into his voice, thick and poisonous on his tongue, and he lets out a soft, hoarse chuckle. these many years have hardly been fun. ]

[ This is a man who goes out of his way to keep the people trying to kill him alive. There's an abundance of caring in his gangly body and although Piter has yet to make an attempt at his life, there's no doubt in Reid's mind that he could. Would, even. Still, bonds and similarities and caring.

Get used to it. ]

Have you talked to the warden? I mean... do you know that they won't provide you with something?

If I must, I will do so when it is certain that they will believe me. [ a man on the verge of collapse and mental dysfunction might kick them into gear— but if he can avoid them altogether, he will. he doesn't want to draw more attention to himself and his weak spots than he must. his hope is placed in marina accepting them back quickly, in the spice he'd been hoarding not being damaged— in too many things that he doesn't have any control over. ] And...

[ he closes his eyes for just a moment, a most unpleasant moment of vulnerability while he decides what to say and how much reid is allowed to know. ] There is the possibility that this place would be unable to procure it. It is a struggle to acquire even in its own universe.

[ It's not surprising, although it is new information. He wasn't sure what to expect when it came to spice — the availability of narcotics so depend on what you're after — but it makes sense that it's such a rare and expensive habit. Somehow it fits with what he knows of the man. ]

They provided you with it back in Marina, didn't they? [ He assumes. If it's hard to procure in Piter's home world, it would be impossible to manufacture in prison. ]

[ it should be impossible. there's a possibility that it is in some respect— piter has considered that marina could be manufacturing spice before, but doubts it highly. synthetic spice does not exist in his time; it would destroy the economy. and he's quite sure that he'd be able to tell the difference between real and manufactured by now.

he gives reid a Look.
] Of course. [ it's a "do i look dead to you?" sort of Look. ] Though I've little clue how such quantities could be siphoned in. [ it's less a question of how— he assumes marina acquires it the same way it acquired him and jessica and everyone else in the prison— and more a question of where? in what universe would so much melange simply not be missed? how would marina have control over such things, access to such universes, the ability to tamper so much with them? it's frustrating to think about.

but he realizes that this all means nothing to reid, for reid knows nothing of spice. it seems as though there's a bit more information he must divulge.
] There is a single, unique source of it: one hostile planet. Not only that, but the cost— it has ranged as high as 620,000 per decagram.

[ piter costs nearly 124,000 solaris per day to maintain— sometimes more, but usually no less. in nearly twenty years, he has proven himself worth hundreds of millions, and in nearly fifty days at marina, he's consumed more than five million solaris worth of spice. ]

[ He has a theory. It's without evidence for now but a theory nonetheless and it would explain a lot of the unexplainable things that happen in Marina — the supply of spice being the lesser of the answers. He's not about to divulge, though. Three people know and as far as he's concerned that's where it stops until they can back it up with hard evidence.

Of course, if he's right... that would also explain why Piter doesn't have a supply of spice here. ]

I have a feeling things like supply and demand isn't something our captors worry about... [ Until now, perhaps. ] How long do you have..? [ Before it gets bad. ]

[ he looks off into space for a moment, considering things. considering how long he's been addicted, how much he takes, how many times before he's missed a dose or two and how it felt. considering what he's heard of withdrawal. considering residual poison. ]

There is no certainty, but I'd wager no more than a week. Within two or three more days, I expect that my faculties will falter dramatically. [ kiss mentat functionality goodbye. maybe even complex motor skills, too. ]

Further degradation will follow: insanity, perhaps blindness— and, of course, pain. [ unspeakable pain. but there is no fear to speak of in his expression or posture; he is doing his utmost to be unflinching, even if his nerves are tingling in his fingertips and feet, begging him to fight or flee, to do anything to set things right. his mentat mind knows better. things are out of his hands, no matter how they may tremble and grope blindly in protest. ]

[ It's a terrifying progression of events and Reid isn't making as much of an effort to hide how it makes him feel as he could. Of course, that doesn't mean there's a whole lot of shock making it to the surface either — dealing with life or death situations on a near-daily basis coupled with his mothers illness (and the possibility of his own) has left him with a clear and focused mind. ]

What can I do. [ It's not a question. It's a demand. ]

[ that tone is loathsome to him. how dare reid demand anything of him? how dare reid think that he can help? ]

Don't be foolish, boy. [ he glares, eyes wide and black and unblinking, trying to force reid to look at him. ] There is nothing you can do.

[ And look he will, possibly with more firm confidence than he's ever displayed around Piter before. This isn't just about helping someone that could be considered a friend (if you squint real hard), it's also about them being two of a kind in so many ways and how easily it could've been him on the other side of the fence. One wrong move, one slip in between the cracks. ]

There's always something I can do. [ He knows it's not true even as he says it, but believing that it is might be just as crucial to his well-being as the spice is to Piter's. ]

[ very rarely has he seen such a light in reid's eyes, and it gives him pause. ] Tell me, then— tell me what you intend to do.

[ his voice is level and icy, but there is a note of pain, of vulnerability, in that final word. just the tiniest creak in his voice that he ignores as it it wasn't there, as if it had never happened, takeing a shallow breath as it ebbs. he must remind himself that he is not defective, that he does not need saving, that he does not need to be put down, that he is not defective. ]

[ There's no pity in his tone of voice, although it dips deeper into softness. This isn't about Piter being weak, but rather a desire to help him anyway. Of wanting to keep him away from indignity and shame, of keeping him safe in some ways and maybe it doesn't make much sense but that is what he needs to do.

If he needs to take him down, he will. This is not the way it should happen. ]

[ it takes more effort than he would like to read the sincerity in reid's voice, but when it registers, that too gives him pause. again and again he finds himself taken aback by this young man with his bizarrely tender heart. ]

What am I to you that you would safeguard my life? [ he isn't expecting a declaration of friendship or even allegiance; he never would. no, he thinks of things that are more sinister. no one wishes to keep him alive for a pure reason; no one wishes to keep him alive because they love him or need him, and he is content with that knowledge. it is familiar. his baron kept him alive because a dead mentat cannot calculate and a ghola can be cumbersome to come by— and because surely, surely there was some excruciating death waiting for when he finally outlived his usefulness. something vile, something horrid: some betrayal or another. ]

[ A moment of clear hesitation. Not, as Piter may suspect, because he has sinister motives with this determination but rather because he's really not sure what to say. He's never pinpointed what their relation actually is and the times someone has asked, he's done his best to dodge the question entirely — perhaps it would serve him better to show his cards right now, if he only knew what they were.

He sounds like a friend.

Back then he denied it adamantly, perhaps even more so because it might've been true. It isn't just about keeping a close eye on a potential threat — it never was — and in all their conversations, all their chess games both on and off the board he's found personal satisfaction that no one else in the dome could bring him. Not better, just different. Maybe it's dangerous and maybe he's a damn fool for continuing to pursue it, a downright idiot for saying what he's about to say.

He draws another breath, meeting those blue-within-blue slits straight on and there isn't a shred of insincerity or humor or anything other than pure, undiluted honesty in his voice. ]

A friend.

[ piter's eyes bore into reid's as he speaks, and still he sees no deceit in them. he looks and looks for it, hunting, wishing it were there to give him some excuse to wrap a hand around the profiler's throat and choke the lies out of him— but the honesty in his words, not to mention the words themselves, startle him into recoiling. piter draws back, eyes feral, lips curled back in disgust and discomfort.

there's a moment of pause where he rights himself, fixing his expression into something more neutral, a mask more stoic; his posture is dignified, regal, but his exhaustion shows in his eyes and his real age seems to settle into his face, into lines that show only in shadow. there's a moment of pause, because he hasn't quite thought of what to say. instead, he shakes his head and parts his lips cautiously, thoughtfully, as he prepares to speak the truth.
] That asks too much of me.

[ piter cannot do it. he cannot consider reid a friend, cannot open himself that fully. it scares him, haunts him. he has called spike and tyki his friends before, but it's never been in total seriousness— they are in a state of tenuous allegiance, and he doesn't feel that he can or should trust them fully. neither of them even know of spice, of the poison in his blood.

and yet reid does.

but reid is no friend to him, though he may play at an allegiance that piter isn't ready to accept— and yet, not quite an enemy. he is none of those things yet— but he is, in many ways, an equal.
]

Too much. [ piter meets reid's eyes again, expression severe. ] Don't be foolish.

[ It's an interesting display, giving even and although the profiler in him registers and sorts and files away this array of reactions, emotions, microexpressions, he doesn't even take a moment to reflect on them. That's not why he's doing this, not entirely and as long as there's something personal at stake he can't let the profiler take over in full.

He keeps his calm, eyes sliding off the other man in some attempt to give him dignity. To give in, without really doing so. ]

I'm not asking for anything in return. That's not how it works. [ There's hurt in his voice, just the slightest undertone of it, not enough for just anyone to pick up on but those that know him just might. Piter just might. ]

Isn’t it? [ of course piter picks up on that pain, and he ponders it, wondering why this should wound reid and how reid has come so far in this little game of theirs, so dangerously far across the board.

he looks at reid with searching, questioning eyes, even if reid doesn't look back. he doesn't press that; he realizes what reid is doing in looking away, and a part of him, the part that is trying in vain to suppress a building, violent shudder of withdrawal, is heinously grateful.
] How could it be that you seek nothing?

[ there's a tiny hint of wonder in his voice at such a notion. all he has known for more than twenty years is manipulation and sabotage. there is no alliance made without such things, or the threats of them dangling overhead. there is no one who exists without knowing the touch of greed. there is no one to truly protect piter save for himself. ] Why should my life be precious to you?

[ He isn't faking it, but he does know what playing up your vulnerability can give you. It's his secret weapon after all, pretending to be less of a threat than he is, more plagued by a headache or more nervous around firearms, less capable. It's surprising how effective it can be and it sure has saved his life many times over.

He's not sure what he's trying to save now, if anything. Accomplish might be a better word, but even there the lines are fuzzy. ]

[ and here piter is, trying to do all in his power to downplay the vulnerability that plagues him. he feels too weak, too open; the things he wants to say betray too much of the man beneath the mentat facade, and that frightens him. just a bit, of course, but there is still a touch of fear there that he despises. ]

Correct your tone. [ it's the only reply he wishes to make for the moment, defensive and harsh. ] I'll not be spoken to in such a way.

[ There's something in that response that makes him straighten up, shoulders tensing up, bristling as if the agitation of constantly having his motives questioned is finally catching up with him. Not just Piter — oh no, Kitty too at times. Sam. They have their reasons but he's tired and quite frankly, he will not be spoken to in such a way either.

Dark eyes shift up to lock with the blue within blue and although his own whites are clear, the rest is a near-black. Pupils dilated. So much to read just in the dilation of a pupil. ]

I protect people. I keep them safe and I keep them alive and if I can't do that, I find the one who hurt them and I put him away. It's what I do. It's my life and whether you like it or not, you're included in that.

[ The dilemma of the profiler. It's never as black and white as one would like, never a case of "pure evil" like in fiction. Nature versus nurture, the long, winding path that leads a man all the way to murder. Brain damage. Malformations. Synapses that aren't firing the way they should. They talk about killers and victims, but at the end of the day they're all victims in one way or the other. ]

If I can keep you alive, then I will keep you alive. Deal with it. [ This is good. This is a step back from friend without taking the word back. ]

And if there is nothing you can do? No one to save, no one to put away— what then? What use will you be with nothing left to protect?

[ faced with ruin, faced with the destruction of all it holds dear, a heart is lost. piter has seen this ring true in the dear doctor yueh's agony at the suffering of his wife, and piter thinks, perhaps fantasizes, that he heard this truth resonating in jessica's voice so many weeks ago, in the way she said the word mourning. piter has seen hearts like reid's bleed over loss, and they have bled at his hands— yet when he looks down to find his hands shaking and weak, piter is just as lost.

the way he speaks is cruel and spiteful, but that bitterness is at least familiar to piter, and in the heat of the moment he considers it warranted, a way to combat reid and throw his words back in his face. venom and bile sullying his words are not strange to him; they are in his nature. hatred can spring into his tone as easily as his fingers can curl around the hilt of a blade, yet there is no real certainty that what he feels for reid is hatred. it's a terrible union of bitterness and fondness and yes, the barest glimpse of alarm at times, but piter sees the futility in true hatred, and his most bitter hatred is reserved for another.

It'll never come to that. There's always something I can do.

[ Spoken with the conviction of a man who's met that desperation time and time again, nearly drowned in it not once or twice but uncountable times in his life and yet every single time he pushed himself back up. Dilaudid, his mothers illness, Gideon, Emily, Elle, everyone he's lost, every time he's lost himself, every sacrifice he's made since he was too young to even properly remember... it has bled him white. It has crushed him in ways that made him doubt he'd ever recover (and will do so even more in the uncertain future) but every time he recovered. He found his way back. ]

Nothing you say can convince me otherwise.
