Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

(OOC: OOC info. This mingle takes place in the Main shelter over the morning hours.

[He nods, having remembered full well her appreciation for a good cup of tea. And what he wouldn't give for one right now along with some quiet contemplation over their current situation. However, he also knows that a calm, steady presence is more powerful in times such as these.]

And you know him from your home, I presume. May I ask you where home is?

[ she could use contemplation about the situation as well, though she tends to gravitate towards discussion if she feels she's found someone who might actually challenge her intellectually. she's beginning to think picard might just be able to. ]

Indeed. He arrived here before I did and I would hope he isn't up to anything. [ still smiling. obviously teasing. ] Earth. Old City, specifically, in late October of 2011. May I ask the same of you?

Depending upon what he might be involved in, I could be for or against it. There have been many times when being up to something has resulted in something positive rather than the alternative.

[He seems very amused as well at the topic, perhaps even with the slightest hint at mischief that only rarely shows itself anymore. Back in his hey day though, he had been quite bull-headed, arrogant, and constantly up to something. And on occasion, he still fell into those old ways.]

Earth, Lebarre, France. Stardate 56844.9, the year, 2379. What an innovative time in history you live in, Doctor -- the early twenty-first century.

The number of times I've had to pick up after him. [ but she laughs softly. picard, she likes you. he has a good sense of humor and she can really appreciate that here.

she does vaguely wonder, however, what he might think of her if he knew she'd lived to see the turn of two centuries (one twice). if he knew her real age... well, most people tended not to think it possible unless they worked for her and even then, some of them had to be convinced. makes her wonder if she should keep that age thing under wraps. she already knows if she mentions her longevity to anyone, she's going to pretend to be the age she should be, rather than the age she is, but now she's wondering if she shouldn't just pretend to be a normal human.

nikola's pretending to have longevity, though, and that seems to be working out for him. either way, there's a significant difference in time periods between herself and the good captain. ]

Quite a difference between us, in that case. I was born in London, live in the States now. I've been to France a few times. [ once during the second world war. that hadn't been much of a party. she pauses for a moment before deciding to see where things lead. ] Can't say I've experienced that particular year, though it's only a matter of time.

Only a matter of time. An interesting choice of words, Doctor. [He considers her words carefully, turning them over in his mind for several moments, although not long enough to make the conversation awkward. Jean-Luc is prone to thoughtful pauses when he's trying to logic his way through something in his mind.]

Words that would leave one with more than a few questions. However, I would loathe to pry into a topic of which you might be unwilling to discuss.

Indeed? [ she asks it as though she has no idea what he might be talking about. ] You're more than welcome to ask. You'll know if we've reached a topic I'd rather not discuss.

[ mainly because she'll refuse to talk about whatever it is and steer the conversation in another direction. ]

Given the amount of time it would take to get from the twenty-first century to the twenty-fourth, one would assume either longevity of life, perhaps an alien species, or time travel.

[He seems interested and curious at either prospect.] Would either assumption be correct?

[ she pauses for a moment, as though she has to think about it. ]

The first would be correct. And before you assume something about my species, let me assure you that I am entirely human.

[ not that she seems bothered by the prospect of not being human. ]

Which only raises more curiosities, Doctor. May I ask how, given that you are human, you've managed to cheat time?

[ she'd known it would and for a moment she considers what to say. she could lie and say it was something within her world. for all she knew, longevity was a product of her world alone. however, there's something about this man...

he doesn't raise any red flags for her, at any rate, and aside from that, she won't be saying anything that nikola hasn't already. she gives him a quick glance over, as though debating whether or not to answer. ]

A hereditary genetic mutation of my DNA. My Abnormality is longevity, extended life.

[ if he's good at reading people, if he knows how to spot tics and the like, he can likely read hers. she isn't attempting to hide her true feelings about this genetic mutation of hers. there's a slight glint in her eyes, one of sorrow. she doesn't truly consider this abnormality to be a gift, not after losing as many people as she has.

however, that glint is gone as soon as she's finished speaking, as though it had never been there to begin with. ]

[This was neither the first or the last time that he had heard of or would deal with the mutation of DNA. But he would be lying if he said the concept of it didn't interest him greatly. Jean-Luc was ever curious, ever a student of the universe. And here in this prison, he had the opportunity to be a student of several universes.

However, he also has a keen eye when learning whether it be about a new species or a new individual. So he notices that fleeting moment of sadness.
]

A mutation of which must have both its positives and negatives.

[ he was observant. either that or he simply had an understanding for the trials of age. whatever the reason, she appreciated it. almost imperceptibly, her emotional walls were sliding back up. she'd been vulnerable for a while, left herself open for this, but as she gazes about the area, her mind wanders to the negatives, back to the people she's lost over the centuries she's been alive, and it's difficult to imagine being truly okay again. if she'd had a mug of tea, this would be the point where she would hide behind it.

the fact that she's now refusing to look at her companion is far more telling than her words. ]

Indeed. I've seen many good things come of my long lifespan, but I have also seen great hardship. At times it is... difficult -- [ that's putting it mildly. ] -- to accept, but I suppose that can be said of anyone, not only someone as old as I am.

[ at that, she does finally glance at him, her arms lifting to wrap protectively around herself, a subconscious movement she was barely even aware of making. her expression is softer than it was previously, but she's holding back, keeping herself wrapped up tighter than she'd been previously. some pieces of her past were still too painful to speak of. ]

[As she avoids looking at him, he opts to make this easier by momentarily shifting the topic to himself.]

In my seventy-four years I have seen extensive change; advancements in technology, ever-evolving lives of shipmates, companions and friends... death...

[For a moment, he trails off at that thought. There had been death both natural and unnatural, some at his own hands. After a bit, he recovers though, giving the tip of whatever passes for clothing here a slight tug as he would his normal Starfleet uniform.] I can only imagine after your time, what you have seen.

[His lips curl into a small, understanding and sympathetic smile. An attempt to lighten the mood.] I must say that you have aged much better than I, Doctor.

[ the tactic is appreciated, but it doesn't do much to get her to relax. she's interested at his age, however, her eyebrows sliding up her forehead just a little bit. fascinating. she's exactly two hundred years older than he is. she actually would have pegged him for slightly younger. just goes to show one can't judge based on looks, something she has always believed.

he continues and she glances away once more. death seems to haunt her, the deaths of everyone around her, never her own. she's come close many times and the idea that she could die at any moment frightens her. but so, too, is she afraid of living forever, because that means she'll outlive literally everyone she's ever known.

as much as she says she's fine on her own and would rather do things herself, she's a lonely old woman. she's social and losing all of these ties over the centuries -- some twice -- hurts more than she's willing to admit to.

his attempt to lighten the mood does not go unnoticed. the corners of her lips twitch upwards. ]
I think that's a matter of opinion, Captain. [ there are days where she certainly feels her age. and with a slightly more open expression, though no less informative on the whole, she offers him the same words she gave rose only days ago: ] Looks can be deceiving, after all.

[ has he even guessed at how old she really is, the age she's trying to pass off? part of her wonders how he would take that. ]

At any rate, I do need to find Nikola. The amount of trouble he gets into if I'm not there to supervise... [ it's true... to some degree. he's really not as bad as she's making him out to be. ]

[In his time, and thanks to medical advancements, the average lifespan is much older than it once was. Lucky for Jean-Luc, he remains in excellent health. And his career permitting, he still had many years ahead of him. Looks could be deceiving, yes.

He nods curtly, properly shifting back to the business of this new prison.
] Yes of course. I wish you success in finding him, Doctor. Should you require assistance, do feel free to ask.

[ she certainly would be interested in such advancements. but all of this means she'll have something to talk to him about later and she welcomes the opportunity.

to his words, she inclines her head in turn. she would regret not being able to speak with him further, but at the moment she can't quite bring herself to continue that topic. ]
Of course. If he wants to be found, he will be. Or I'll be stubborn enough to do it in spite of him.

[ there's a bit of a determined glint to her eyes at that. ] Until next we meet, I wish you well, Captain.
