Day 221 — Morning mingle : Main shelter
[Wake up and smell the lack of coffee. You're on a bunk bed. Maybe you're a top and maybe you're a bottom. There are five other people in your room. Maybe they're friends or enemies or faces you barely recognize if at all. It doesn't matter much. You can leave this room and you don't need to come back to it.

You should get your rations though. You're probably hungry. You're definitely a little sluggish of body. What happened to that bruise you got sparing yesterday? What happened to your newly dyed hair? Mystery, mystery... Move along. Find the public bathrooms and do your business with a hundred of your closest friends.

Find the kiosk and get your rations. Careful not to let anyone steal them. You won't get more until tomorrow and the bots won't care. They aren't here to hold your hand. If you get sick or hurt and they deem it necessary they will take you to the hospital whether you wish it or not. But why dwell on such things? You're here now and you might as well enjoy it. You even get a free day today.]

[ somehow, helen and nikola keep missing one another. this is particularly frustrating for someone who can pick her out of a crowd by the smell of her perfume alone, but his nose isn't working right today. he can't even extend a talon, let alone manipulate magnetic fields. he's more human in this moment than he was when he'd lost his vampirism to a device of his own design. being handed a bottle of blood instead of food when he steps up to rations counter only succeeds in angering him further—he does not enjoy being mocked.

being in marinanova was fine, practically a vacation. being here? is not okay. and he's finally spurred into do something about this mode.

...once he dealt with finding himself standing near a girl who he swore he wasn't a vampire to while holding a bottle of blood. (and found helen. that, too.) ]

Don't they know it's against the rules to wear white after Labor Day? [ tsk tsk ]

[ this is almost like the time elena found her history teacher in his boxers eating chunky monkey ice cream while spending the night with her aunt. obviously, without the awkwardness of family accidentally showcasing their healthy sex drives.

but it still is pretty awkward. elena sees the blood. she sees it. is even looking at it very much. she parts her lips, pulls in a breath, and lifts her arms from her sides slightly to shrug. ] I'm not sure we are after Labor Day. she's not offended, or angry, or even particularly surprised he did or would find ways around a truth, or any truth. she doesn't feel entitled to it from him either. elena is someone who understands exactly his situation.

[ meaning he can still consume human food as much as he wants, as long as he's still drinking blood. ] Back home, I had devised a blood substitute, but here... [ he twists the top off his bottle, partly out of a need to get the blood in his system before the hunger started messing with his head and partly to see how she'd react. ] Well, bottoms up.

[ her lips parts some realizing he's going to boldly drink some, here and now, and she follows the movement - but not with any disgust. it's mere intrigue and surprise, and both are adjusted in the following moment. elena's seen damon and stefan and caroline drinking blood multiple times. truthfully, it's still weird for her sometimes (her best friend since grade school drinking blood might throw anyone even after a few months) but she's used to it, and the weirdness, by now.

him drinking does give her a moment realize something. ]

Actually, no. It was 1886, mind you, and I didn't exactly have a properly documented family tree with the names of vampires underlined in red. Had I known I had vampire lineage, I wouldn't have participated in the experiment at all. [ perhaps contributed to the development of, but certainly not the part where they all willingly injected themselves with it. his interest had been in human genetics, not the restoration of the once great vampire race. ] It was a variable none of us had considered, and hadn't realized was even present until, well — [ he wiggles the bottle at her, the blood sloshing around inside. ]

Vampires were hunted to extinction for a reason, regardless of what I or anyone else might think of that reasoning. [ a somewhat difficult admission, given his pride. ] Do you realize what sort of chaos would ensue if people discovered out it were somewhat possible to resurrect the race if you had the proper means of doing so? It'd be a witch hunt.

[ of people throwing around accusations of vampire ancestry — which was the reason he never went for that angle when he was trying to revive the race himself. too public, too chaotic, not as streamlined as he preferred things to be. also damn near impossible to properly research, as he tried that, too... nevermind the issue of getting to the source blood, what with gregory ensuring none of them would ever touch it again without the other four. ]

[ it's a reasoning elena remembers the explanation to, and now that he mentions it and she's staring at the reality of it all in his face... she feels the horror more than she had before. his anger, too. if she notices the difficulty of his admission, it's not something she weighs as he does - it's simply the truth.

she does realize the chaos that would ensue, can imagine that kind of witch hunt. elena blinks, noticeably affected by the brunt of his words. for a moment, she's tempted to tell him everything - about herself, about vampires and hybrids and doppelgängers, to place the same trust in him he's been forced to place in her.

and because she wants to. (she thinks it's something they could both understand.)

but she can't and so she doesn't. her lashes flutter; she looks down for a moment. ] I know what it's like to have to keep something like that. [ it wasn't too long ago that the idea of reviving the race itself had been high on his list of priorities, something he wanted to set into motion and make happen, because he had this idea in his head that all vampires were the enlightened creatures who were technologically advanced beyond humanity's wildest dreams. not even the technology of today compared to what the vampires once had, and he wished to restore a people that were great in that high regard back to their former glory. encountering afina had effectively squashed those dreams and desires, giving him a taste of the darker side of vampirism through an ancient, inbred queen with a nazi complex who wanted to enslave humanity. yeah, no. that's not what he wanted, and he was beginning to understand the necessity in ensuring the race stayed dead.

the only true loss in blowing up afina and her court was using the holographic map of praxis to do so. which is why he'd never let helen live that down. ]

Shouldn't have to. Shouldn't. Interesting choice of words. [ and he's suspected she's been keeping secrets of her own for quite some time now. just something about the air surrounding her. it was mysterious, intriguing — which is why she had his attention and he hadn't already brushed her off like he did the majority of the sanctuary network's staff. ]

shouldn't. he knows something - suspects just as rightly something about her. she's not afraid (can't be) and she doesn't mind (chooses not to.) she more or less just told him she understands secrets, but now she sees he's known for some time.

she sets her mouth, loosens the intensity of her gaze and drops it for only a moment, her chin still level. she lets the silence speak. ]
