Day 205 — Mistletoe Mingle
[Wherever you go, there they are—sneaky and hidden and biding their time, waiting until they find you all two by two, and then closing in. Happy Mistletoe Day!]

(OOC: Read this for all the details.)

Mostly, I just want to hide from the bots. [You'd never know that she actually did really well on her SATs and she does know what respite and sanctuary means even if she doesn't know the quote.]

All in the clear so far?

Yes, quite. I'd go so far as to say that the books might even be a repellent of said droids. [It was a theory he was testing of course. He gestures to a seat at the table and nods.] Please, won't you join me?

They do make things sort of homey, don't they? [Maybe it's just her and the Giles-associations that books have for her. She does take a sea though.] Thanks. So are you adjusting and everything?

Adjusting, yes. Resigning, no. [And he likes to make a distinction between the two as so many here seem so resigned to their fate.]

Although I must say that I enjoy this place though, the library. Actual books are a rarity in my time, you see... unless one is a collector of such things.

That's good. The adjusting. [She pauses a moment.] and the resigning. Or lack of...[In some ways she has resigned herself to spend some time here. She doesn't believe it's for the rest of her life. She believes the Powers that Be will jerk her out before it's all said and done because a slayer's duty is never done. For the moment, it's a break of sorts. Certainly not from her relationship drama, but from the apocalypse drama at least. Plus, Dawn is here and for Buffy, that's a big thing. If Dawn is here, she can rest.]

HA! I knew computers would take over. Well, not me really, but Willow and Miss. Calendar. Giles was all poo poo computers. Shiny and funny smelling. [And then she sobers a moment because Giles is gone. She takes a sharp breath, forces it back and comes up with a smile that's a bit cardboard, but there.] Anyway. Yeah, I like the library. It's comfy and homey.

[Her amusement at the digital and electronic overpowering resource draining objects like books is, in turn, amusing to him.] Oh, in my time one would say that it is the book that smells odd rather than the hand-held devices we carry to and fro. However, on The Enterprise I've managed to hold on to a few seasoned novels that are quite enjoyable to... crack open. I'll admit that aside from my first introduction to this building it had been some time since I have enjoyed an actual library.

[But the fact that she referred to a library as comfy and homey piques his interest.] I take it you frequented one where you're from?

[Amusing is so much better than annoying so she'll take it.] No! See, I totally get that. I mean old books do smell funny and musty and dusty and like someone's grandma. Or, you know what i always imagined someone's grandma would smell like.

[She smiles fondly at the question and nods.] Sort of. I--my...Giles. [While her tone doesn't tell him who Giles is exactly, it does tell him that it's someone she's very fond of] He...when I first met him he was the librarian at my high school. I spent a lot of time there with him and my friends. It always felt like it was safe, like nothing bad could happen to me there. [Her brow furrows.] Even though it did sometimes. [Her eyebrows rise as she considers all of her words together.] Time spent in a completely not creepy way. In case you were wondering.

[Her manner of speaking is amusing to him, she definitely has a way with words that is very unique to her.]

It sounds as if you had many fond memories in a library. It most certainly doesn't surprise me one bit. Was your Giles a lover of books? [Because it was possible to be a librarian and not love literature beyond the filing and organizing and cataloging.]

[At least he can understand her.]

Oh yeah. His apartment was full of them. Like his own little library. He had a TV but it was black and white and kind of crappy.

TV... uhhh.... oh! Television. Yes. I'm afraid that form of entertainment eventually dies out shortly after the year 2040.

[Sorry Buffy. Sad, but true... maybe a little ironic as well. But guess what has snuck up behind Jean-Luc while they've been talking? A kiss bot. Feel free to be mortified.] It's been... centuries.

Hey! Libraries are supposed to be safe. [She's quite indigent about the appearance of the bot.]

Wait....what? Centuries? Since you kissed? [Have a very confused Buffy.]

What? No, centuries since television ceased to be a common form of entertainment.

[Her confusion leads to his confusion as he's yet to notice the bot, until he feels the bubble around them pushing even from his seat. He stands in one fluid and swift move and looks back to the bot.] Really. [Which sounds more a statement than a question.]

Okay. That's weird, because people are pretty addicted to their televisions sets when I'm from.

[She makes a 'yeah really' sort of gesture when he makes his statement.]

It's pretty much with the not caring what we think.

[He feels that push behind him and looks thoroughly put out. Giving the top of his uniform a slight tug, he squares his shoulders and walks around the table to Buffy. Best to cling to as much dignity as possible rather than being forced to climb over the table between them once the bubble gets too small. So now he's standing in front of her.]

There now. One quick kiss on the lips. This is but a single battle in an otherwise much larger war.

[At least Buffy is just as annoyed. She looks up at him (she's fairly short) and puts a hand on his shoulder.]

I don't think kissing me is as bad as a battle. I mean...there's probably not going to be any casualties.

Oh I don’t speak of the kiss itself but more of the lack of control over the issue at hand, Ms. Summers. [The bot is screaming at them now. And before he can be pushed up completely against her without any wiggle room, he leans in to lay a short and curt kiss on her lips. Then he stands straight again and tugs lightly at the hem of his uniform top.] That should be sufficient.

[It's kind of adorable how awkward he is about it. When the confetti sprays in the air and the barrier drops, Buffy takes a step back, a grin on her face.]

So you like being in control of things [She sits back down at the table.] I get it. I kind of do too. [that's an understatement.]
