Day 205 — Mistletoe Mingle
[Wherever you go, there they are—sneaky and hidden and biding their time, waiting until they find you all two by two, and then closing in. Happy Mistletoe Day!]

Yeah, you stick with what you know. [That way fewer people get hurt by the weirdness that surrounds you. And unfortunately for (this) Spike, all the Scoobies know him. They know parts of him that he would probably rather they didn't. And Dawn can't imagine how that feels, how she would feel if people knew some of the things that make her the most vulnerable. She knows she wouldn't like it though. So she's trying not to bring it up anymore unless the conversation goes there or he flat-out asks her.

Which is why she's surprised when he mentions that conversation they'd had in Merlotte's. The last time they'd talked she had been in a bad head space and he had gotten some truth from her in more ways than one. She had to be careful with that. Because she wasn't sure what this Spike would do if he knew she was a magical key that he had once fought so hard to protect.
] Yeah, I probably said some thing I -- I mean sometimes the words just kind of spill out without any filter, especially with people I know and... should I apologize?

Apologize..? Why would you do that? [ He shoots her a look, somewhat on the defense. It's still such a foreign concept to him, the mere thought that any of them would even think to apologize even when they have a reason to.

That's not what this is about though and right now, Dawn is his best source of information about the future. She's honest and straightforward and smart enough to put it in terms he can understand and right now he really does want to understand, if only to get it out of his head. It's been gnawing at him ever since that time at the Merlotte's. ]

Why did I do it? Why did I get my soul back? And don't give me that toss about Buffy, there has to be somethin' more to it.

[ This is the only thing he doesn't understand. Banding together with the Scoobies, fighting side by side with the Slayer... that's not too unbelievable, he's only had that chip in his brain for a couple of weeks and he's already considering easing up on the big bad act but the soul? He doesn't understand that. ]

[The question surprises her. It surprises her to the point that it shuts her up for almost a minute as she contemplates the best answer for that. Lots of people would say that Spike getting his soul was about Buffy and his love for her. Lots of people would say that Spike might have had Angel envy. But both camps would be wrong. Dawn knew Spike. She sat back and she paid attention to him beyond the good or evil or demon or vampire parts of him. It wasn't anything intimate or even romantic, although there were times when she had crushed on him. It was just the way they had always interacted. Neither of them pulled any punches with each other. And that wasn't going to change now.

She exhales a slow breath and looks down to the ground for a moment before looking back up to Spike and leveling her gaze with his.
] The military put that chip in your head. And it... wasn't just a physical change where you physically couldn't hurt humans. It eventually became a psychological thing. But it was hard because you still had the monster in you. So for all your wanting to be a good man... the monster was always right on the edge. It's why Buffy never fully trusted you... or any of the Scoobies, for that matter.

[Notice she didn't add herself in that, because she had always gone straight to Spike when she needed away from the Scoobies. He'd always been honest with her, never treated her like she was a freak. She couldn't say that about the rest of them, even Buffy.] There was an incident that... well I think it was the tipping point for you. And yeah, it involved Buffy. But I don't think she's why you went to get soul-ified. You did it because you'd been living in the middle of two worlds for so long and you had to make a choice between always being preyed on and possibly controlled by the big bad inside you, or become the one calling the shots.

[She pauses here, considering whether telling Spike that he'd almost raped Buffy here or not. She decides to leave that out unless he asks what the incident was.] You chose being a man over being a monster. And then once you had your soul, since we all know that even souled things can be evil, you chose to be a good man rather than a bad one because you had changed... on the inside. You took control, Spike. You took control over the demon inside of you instead of letting the demon play you like a marionette... which, super creepy, marionettes... right?

[ Even as she speaks he's questioning if he really wants to hear this. Sure, he asked and the need to know is damn near killing him but at the same time she's giving him a truth he's not sure he can face. It was easy dismissing the idea to go to the good side when all he heard was kumbayah's and the constant disapproval of his very person, but Dawn has gone beyond that and damn well opened up Pandora's box.

It's weird how the one Scoobie he didn't know existed seems to be the one that know him the best.

He keeps his eyes on her, silently listening despite the way every new piece of the puzzle that clicks into place makes him feel... something. Sick, perhaps. Dizzy. Coupled with their last conversation it all makes such painful amounts of sense that he's damn near reeling under the weight of it all. It sounds so much like what he'd do. Go against the grain, rebel against any forces that seek to control him — he turned the Annoying One to dust when he didn't feel like chanting anymore and he went against his nature to stop Angelus from bringing about the Apocalypse even though it cost him Dru and even though he's been so dead set on gorging himself on Buffy's blood he knows somewhere deep inside that when it really came down to it, he'd just as easily fight on her side as he would kill her.

At the end of it, he swallows. Nods slowly. ]

Alright... thanks, Dawn.

You're welcome. [She's trying not to let the fact that Spike is questioning get her hopes up that she might get her friend back. But somehow, it still does... just a bit. She grips the strap of her bag a little tighter.]

You called me Little Bit... the other day in that conversation. You just said it. Like... out of the blue.

Did I, now. [ Not a question. He's well aware that he did it and it may have even been deliberate, in some half-conscious way. ] Must've stuck, then... you did say it was a thing I called you.

It suits you.

[It suits you. That makes a full on Dawn smile appear on her lips. See what you did there, Spike? She's super easy to make happy. And really, it's more than happiness. It just makes her feel good because back in the day when Spike had used that nickname for her, it was because he'd cared.]

Thanks. It's a lot nicer than names other people call me. You know, brat, annoying, clumsy, awkward, too much trouble, she who is in the way. [But Spike had never called her any of those things, or even thought them as far as she knew.]

[ Yeah, he sees what he did. Not sure how to feel about that, to be honest. I mean, sure, it's nice to know that he can make her happy but should it be nice to know that he can make her happy? Is that the kind of guy he really is?

Way to give a guy an identity crisis there, Dawn. ]

You know what they say, sticks an' stones- [ Whether he had any intention of ending that little rhyme, we'll never know. Hello invisible barrier. ]

[She’s about to finish the saying for him and comment on both the violent and untruthfulness of it when she feels the same bubble at her back, inching her closer to him. Her eyes go wide and she immediately doesn’t want to get that close to this Spike. Sure, she’d once had a crush on him but some of the other vampires in this place had been able to smell the not quite right on her when they got close to her. Spike from home had never commented on it but then he’d never tried to bug her about anything involving Glory and the Key. She doesn’t know if this Spike would do the same and for some reason it would break her heart if he called her anything less than real and human.]

Okay, uhm… rule number one… no drinking of the blood. Cause Buffy would get all upset about it. Rule number two, no smelling me cause ew. [Only she doesn’t really think it’s ew, she’s been around vampires too much to let that bother her. She just thinks that scent has something to do with how the other vampires knew she was more than she seemed to be.] I can’t really think of a rule number three cause I used to want you to kiss me and you only had eyes for my sister and now I’m like… freaking out. Only not so much freaking out as just living out a teenage fantasy? Ohmigod make me shut up and stop talking! [How much more could she embarrass herself? Really.]

[ That gets her such a look followed by a very unimpressed eyeroll. He has no reason to think she's anything other than human and perhaps it's stupid of him to assume things like that, but there you go. Besides, after all their little talks? He's not that interested in hurting her. ]

Relax already. You know I wouldn't be able to bite you even if I wanted to. [ Tap at his temple. Chip, remember? ] Besides, you're th' one who's been braggin' about what a good kisser you are. Looks like you get a chance to prove yourself, lit'le bit.

[Spike being Spike, Dawn knows not to take anything for granted with him whether he’s good or bad or some grey area in between. And she also knows not to underestimate him, even with that chip. He went through trials and torture to get his soul. Obviously he has no problem with fighting through the pain when he really wants to. But mostly she just said it for herself, so that she could say she did.

But it’s that last comment that has her blushing. Maybe she shouldn’t have let all of her words spill out of her in front of him. Sadly, she’s being nudged closer and closer to him by the bubble.
] Well, that was more about the hypothetical since I really like kissing and not so much about reality. You know… cause sometimes I live in this imaginary space in my head called Dawn-Land where I’m more awesome and less awkward.

[ For as short a time as he's known her, Spike's realized one very important thing about Dawn — she's smart. Sure, some of that knowledge comes from being from a future he has yet to experience but that doesn't really make that big of a difference. Everyone else is ahead of him too and they seem just as daft as always.

At some point, whether it's in the present or some distant event in the future, Dawn has seen through him. She understands him better than he ever allows himself to, and that is a scary thing  — a terrifying thing that requires some kind of trust or it'll all go to hell. He can't deny that right now, with the way things are... he does trust her. Maybe part of that is because she seems to trust him.

He takes a step closer, hand moving up to rest lightly on her shoulder. ]

C'mon. Let's just get it over with. No big deal.

Yeah. Definitely no big deal. And on the plus side you haven't made out with my sister yet so... there's that.

[See? The cup is half full. Even if he kissed her because of this curse there was no actual full-on macking yet. And Dawn was kind of glad of that. She leans in quickly to give Spike a quick peck on the lips. It's quick and chaste and not as weird as she'd thought it might be. She's considering it a win, all things considered.] See? Not so bad. And I still get to pretend I'm an awesome kisser.

[ Yeah, about that... the kiss with Buffy was definitely something else. Something weird and uncomfortable that he'd rather forget all-together if he can. Still not entirely sure what that was about and it'd be an understatement to say that he's relieved with how quick and easy this went — a poof of confetti and there goes the bot. ]

Not bad at all. Practically painless. [ Teasing as he picks confetti out of his hair. ]
