[Wherever you go, there they are—sneaky and hidden and biding their time, waiting until they find you all two by two, and then closing in. Happy Mistletoe Day!]

[Well hidden away in the library where he's fairly certain those ridiculous bots will not be. Jean-Luc sits sequestered at a table with a book open and his nose buried in it as he just tries to make it through the day without involving himself at all.]

[Buffy has resorted to hiding in the library. It's supposed to be safe, right? It was always safe with Giles there. Okay, well not always and not that Giles was ever here...and her internal ramble strikes again.

Anyway, hiding. Library.

Only she doesn't realize she's leading a bot right in.]

Hi. Sorry. Not interrupting but hi.

[Jean-Luc looks up to Buffy, offering her a smile and not noticing the bot yet. Book stacks make for good hiding spots apparently. He remembers Buffy from the two other times they have spoken.]

Ah. Ms. Summers. Seeking respite here within this sanctuary of ideas? [He's referring to a quote in which a library is where people place ideas.]

Mostly, I just want to hide from the bots. [You'd never know that she actually did really well on her SATs and she does know what respite and sanctuary means even if she doesn't know the quote.]

All in the clear so far?

Yes, quite. I'd go so far as to say that the books might even be a repellent of said droids. [It was a theory he was testing of course. He gestures to a seat at the table and nods.] Please, won't you join me?

They do make things sort of homey, don't they? [Maybe it's just her and the Giles-associations that books have for her. She does take a sea though.] Thanks. So are you adjusting and everything?

Adjusting, yes. Resigning, no. [And he likes to make a distinction between the two as so many here seem so resigned to their fate.]

Although I must say that I enjoy this place though, the library. Actual books are a rarity in my time, you see... unless one is a collector of such things.

That's good. The adjusting. [She pauses a moment.] and the resigning. Or lack of...[In some ways she has resigned herself to spend some time here. She doesn't believe it's for the rest of her life. She believes the Powers that Be will jerk her out before it's all said and done because a slayer's duty is never done. For the moment, it's a break of sorts. Certainly not from her relationship drama, but from the apocalypse drama at least. Plus, Dawn is here and for Buffy, that's a big thing. If Dawn is here, she can rest.]

HA! I knew computers would take over. Well, not me really, but Willow and Miss. Calendar. Giles was all poo poo computers. Shiny and funny smelling. [And then she sobers a moment because Giles is gone. She takes a sharp breath, forces it back and comes up with a smile that's a bit cardboard, but there.] Anyway. Yeah, I like the library. It's comfy and homey.

[Her amusement at the digital and electronic overpowering resource draining objects like books is, in turn, amusing to him.] Oh, in my time one would say that it is the book that smells odd rather than the hand-held devices we carry to and fro. However, on The Enterprise I've managed to hold on to a few seasoned novels that are quite enjoyable to... crack open. I'll admit that aside from my first introduction to this building it had been some time since I have enjoyed an actual library.

[But the fact that she referred to a library as comfy and homey piques his interest.] I take it you frequented one where you're from?

[Amusing is so much better than annoying so she'll take it.] No! See, I totally get that. I mean old books do smell funny and musty and dusty and like someone's grandma. Or, you know what i always imagined someone's grandma would smell like.

[She smiles fondly at the question and nods.] Sort of. I--my...Giles. [While her tone doesn't tell him who Giles is exactly, it does tell him that it's someone she's very fond of] He...when I first met him he was the librarian at my high school. I spent a lot of time there with him and my friends. It always felt like it was safe, like nothing bad could happen to me there. [Her brow furrows.] Even though it did sometimes. [Her eyebrows rise as she considers all of her words together.] Time spent in a completely not creepy way. In case you were wondering.

[Her manner of speaking is amusing to him, she definitely has a way with words that is very unique to her.]

It sounds as if you had many fond memories in a library. It most certainly doesn't surprise me one bit. Was your Giles a lover of books? [Because it was possible to be a librarian and not love literature beyond the filing and organizing and cataloging.]

Oh yeah. His apartment was full of them. Like his own little library. He had a TV but it was black and white and kind of crappy.

TV... uhhh.... oh! Television. Yes. I'm afraid that form of entertainment eventually dies out shortly after the year 2040.

[Sorry Buffy. Sad, but true... maybe a little ironic as well. But guess what has snuck up behind Jean-Luc while they've been talking? A kiss bot. Feel free to be mortified.] It's been... centuries.

[ who knew the borg could be so stealthy? especially in the heels seven has on right now, but she slips into a chair to the captain's left without so much as a sound. ]

These new robots could stand to be reprogrammed.

[She was very stealthy, because Picard usually prided himself on being very aware of his surroundings. So when she slides into the seat next to him unnoticed, he looks up from his book with a start before relaxing just a few moments later once he see's that it's her.]

Ah, Seven. Yes, I'm inclined to agree having witnessed several things I'd rather not on my way here.

As have I, along with experiencing a few of the... events myself.

[ she is still very, very new to kissing and had only kissed one person prior to this event. and now she's done more kissing than she thought she ever would. ]

Caught unawares were you?

[With as quietly as she'd joined him here in the library it surprised him that any bot could sneak up on her. Although he supposed as they were grossly outnumbered, anything was possible.] While the event itself isn't nearly as disturbing as it could be, I find myself with a healthy aversion to being forced into anything.

Yes. Several times. [ she liked some of it, has found kissing to be a surprisingly enjoyable activity and now understands why lieutenant torres and ensign paris engage it in so frequently. but being unable to choose who she kisses is what irks her. seven has issues with choice, having been robbed of so many. ]

I do not enjoy being forced.

And this is precisely what this supposed 'holiday' is about, it takes away freedom of choice.

[He's literally grumbling about it as well. Oh but wait, he's not done yet. More grumbling and ranting in three... two... one...] And I find that it only magnifies the fact that this entire place is a dichotomy of itself. A prison dressed up in all its finery with luxuries. An absence of choice dressed up as a holiday. We must not forget what these luxuries and holidays really are. Very little here is as it seems.

[ she absorbs his words and in a voice that is not at all menacing, forceful, or anything like one's voice would be when uttering these words, she states: ] Resistance is futile. [ but! ] However, we must resist. Resistance is what makes us stand apart from those who are so willing to conform, to accept their fates as residents of this prison. We are not blinded as they are.

Yes, resistance is futile, which is precisely what they wish for us to believe. And with these little forced 'holidays' they discretely, or perhaps to some of us not so discretely, attempt to force us to accept that resistance is futile.

[He hrumphs and shifts in his seat.] Well I'm not so easily coerced. And neither, I would wager, are you.

[ seven lifts her chin defiantly, rather rebellious in her own right. picard has thankfully been spared the period of time in which she was rebellious against starfleet authority and disobeyed captain janeway on several occasions before she grasped the whys, hows, reasonings, and functions behind the starfleet heirachy and the rules in place. she was very much like a child then, a child rescued from wolves who had no idea how to be something other than a wolf. ]

The Queen herself could not force me to bend to her demands. I will not comply with the wardens, these robots, or their ridiculous holidays.

Yes, and even while being forced into something we know is not of our own doing, we much at the very least keep our minds sharpened to the truth of the matter.

[He's suddenly reminded of his time being held captive by the Cardassians, a prisoner of war at their mercy. They hadn't followed any POW decorum and Jean-Luc had very nearly felt as if he had lost his mind by the time he'd been rescued. With incredibly acute hearing, Jean-Luc hears the slight hum of a bot. He had always been atune to noises that most others couldn't hear. Perhaps Seven heard him as well. But nevertheless, his book is laid on the table, he grabs her hand and hurries off with her through the tall stacks in the library.]

[ oh yes, she heard it. her audio implants are programmed to pick up a range of sounds usually undetectable to the human ear. but the bot is fast and it has the bubble around them before she has time to fully lift herself out of her seat and put some distance between herself and the captain. annoyed, she glares at the robot. ]

If we were still Borg, this force field would be unable to hold us. This robot should consider itself lucky we are not.

[ because it would subsequently assimilated. not that seven hasn't been trying all morning to get close enough to one in order to do just that in attempt to get her hands on the force field technology, to compare it to what they already know about constructing them, and see if it might aid them in their escape from this place. ]

[Running into the invisible barrier, Jean-Luc comes upright and squares his shoulders. He slowly turns around to find Seven there and casts a less than amused glance at the bot in question.]

Yes. We would adapt. Unfortunately, Seven, we are forced into a situation in which we must go through in order to come out on the other end.

[He tries to sound dignified about it, knowledgeable, and not like it's the most ridiculous thing he's ever been put through save for any number of his encounters with Q. No, he'd put this right up there with his encounters with the Q.]
