Day 203 [action/mingle] Defense Force Mixer
[There was a bit of a mail delay with PM's disappearance, but everyone on the team should have gotten a letter this morning. By noon the roof of the new Defense Force headquarters is ready for guests. It isn't exactly decked out, but there is a long table with finger-foods: small sandwiches, fruits, and hors d'oevres as well as sweets like cupcakes and truffles. An arrangement of sodas and bottled waters sits on one end next to an enclosed punch dispenser. Sorry, no spiking the punch, kids. There are also small standing tables around the edges. The only real seating comes in the form of benches along the sides. The point is to get to know the rest of the team, not to sit and eat, so this suits Kitty just fine. They can thank Lacus for the fact that there is food at all and that things have been arranged in such a way to promote circulation.

She waits until it seems like most everyone has drifted in and calls for their attention while perching herself up on the wall itself. No fear of heights here.]

Hey. Thanks for getting here on the short notice. I'm not really speech girl, so I'll keep this snack size. We've had a lot of changes. New prison. New leader. New headquarters. New divisions of duties and responsibilities. New members. It's a lot to expect you to keep up with and you have. So, good job.

Now I'm going to ask you to do better.

You're an amazing group of individuals, but we need to be a team. I need you to know each other and be able to work with each other even if you aren't covering the same sector or area. The stronger we can function together the better chance we'll have when we find our shot at taking the wardens down. That's part of what today is about. It's not all crustless sandwiches. I need teams training and strategizing together.

Make sure you're reporting suspicious people to our watch list and anything that might be relevant about this place or our robotic overlords to the investigative team.

Okay. Mingle. If you have questions, problems, whatever, come at me.

[Once she's done, she hops down. The mixing can continue for as long as people want provided they still handle their sectors.]

(OOC: See [info]marinanova_df for details on the force. Roster. To join. Everyone on the DF and anyone they brought is welcome. Curious passers by likely won't be tossed out. Try your luck!)

[Private video to Dirk, Jake, and Roxy (who isn't here, but she doesn't know that)]
Thanks for the invitation. [Which she read a little late. Sleepovers at Reid's can do that to a girl.]

...Doors, huh. [A tiny grin surfaces before she hides it away along with her amusement. So he's that kind of person; not irresponsible, but simply physical and energetic and puts that to work the most in their job, and she certainly can't dislike that.

Clearing her throat faintly, she adopts a straitlaced attitude once again, considering the subject]

Yes, the peacekeeping organization of my world. It's unfortunately needed more than you'd probably figure.

Hey, you'd be surprised how good it feels to knock some doors down. [It's said with an amused grin and followed by a deep laugh. It's just a part of Derek's personality to push his way in in any way he can. Sometimes it works in their favor, sometimes it doesn't.]

Oh I don't doubt it. I know we keep busier than I sometimes think we should back home. Where one case is closed there's five more waiting in line... and counting. So I get it.

[She would be, considering if she can quietly unlock the door and keep attention off herself instead of give warning, that's what she'll do. Just a difference of preference and profession, likely]

Your job... I didn't really hear much from Reid-- the one before, that is. [She adds quickly, very much feeling the need to clarify since she's made it a point to steer as clear as she can from the current one. She wants to avoid the issue of possibly feeling like she's replacing the old one.

But, continuing on with her question--]

It's like detective work... but you fight in the field as well?

Back home, you mean? We work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a department called the Behavioral Analysis Unit. We work the full spectrum of crimes but mostly we focus on serial cases; murders, assaults, arsons... things like that.

[He considers that for a moment before continuing.] If we don't have to fight, we don't. But the bad guys run and we go after them. Sometimes they're armed. Sometimes they've got hostages... things get sticky. We fight and try to do so with as minimal loss of life as possible. Sometimes casualties can't be helped though.

What about the peacekeeping organization you mentioned? You get in the mix of things?

[A thin eyebrow raises just a bit, conveying her surprise that he seems to think those titles really mean something to her. But she does get the picture; they'd fall into a Special Forces division back home, stay in HQ and not be sent out on regular duty]

If "getting in the mix of things" means situations like working my men and I through fire from extremists or factions, trying to convince them to lay down arms or use other methods if needed to prevent them from killing those with no desire or means to fight, all without getting any of us killed either...

Then, yes. A few times. [Since they're talking jobs, she's not going to mention what she was doing before coming here]

[He'd assumed they would mean nothing to her, just like the peacekeeping organization means nothing to him. But on the off chance that it did, he had learned that spelling it out instead of using acronyms was the best way to go about explaining what he and Reid did. It was nice to know that despite the differences in titles, they had had somewhat of the same goals back home.]

Yeah, that sounds like getting in the mix of things to me. You say working your men. That mean you're in charge of the organization altogether or some department or... unit? [Again, he has no idea what they would call the different factions within the organization, but he's trying anyway.]

[A faint snort escapes her, though she tries to cover with a cough and looks properly apologetic for seeming rude. But really, her leading the Order? She can't even fathom doing so]

Platoon, first out of six. We are a military force basically, just not attached to a country.

[She rolls her eyes a bit at the end, unconsciously; they may be separate, but it doesn't stop the higher-ups from favoring one country over another, even if said country is in the wrong]
