Day 203 [action/mingle] Defense Force Mixer
[There was a bit of a mail delay with PM's disappearance, but everyone on the team should have gotten a letter this morning. By noon the roof of the new Defense Force headquarters is ready for guests. It isn't exactly decked out, but there is a long table with finger-foods: small sandwiches, fruits, and hors d'oevres as well as sweets like cupcakes and truffles. An arrangement of sodas and bottled waters sits on one end next to an enclosed punch dispenser. Sorry, no spiking the punch, kids. There are also small standing tables around the edges. The only real seating comes in the form of benches along the sides. The point is to get to know the rest of the team, not to sit and eat, so this suits Kitty just fine. They can thank Lacus for the fact that there is food at all and that things have been arranged in such a way to promote circulation.

She waits until it seems like most everyone has drifted in and calls for their attention while perching herself up on the wall itself. No fear of heights here.]

Hey. Thanks for getting here on the short notice. I'm not really speech girl, so I'll keep this snack size. We've had a lot of changes. New prison. New leader. New headquarters. New divisions of duties and responsibilities. New members. It's a lot to expect you to keep up with and you have. So, good job.

Now I'm going to ask you to do better.

You're an amazing group of individuals, but we need to be a team. I need you to know each other and be able to work with each other even if you aren't covering the same sector or area. The stronger we can function together the better chance we'll have when we find our shot at taking the wardens down. That's part of what today is about. It's not all crustless sandwiches. I need teams training and strategizing together.

Make sure you're reporting suspicious people to our watch list and anything that might be relevant about this place or our robotic overlords to the investigative team.

Okay. Mingle. If you have questions, problems, whatever, come at me.

[Once she's done, she hops down. The mixing can continue for as long as people want provided they still handle their sectors.]

(OOC: See [info]marinanova_df for details on the force. Roster. To join. Everyone on the DF and anyone they brought is welcome. Curious passers by likely won't be tossed out. Try your luck!)

[Private video to Dirk, Jake, and Roxy (who isn't here, but she doesn't know that)]
Thanks for the invitation. [Which she read a little late. Sleepovers at Reid's can do that to a girl.]

[ A furrowed brow, and a small frown of consideration. He shakes his head; that he did not partake of at the festival. ]

No, I have not.

The captain had me sample some during the festivities. It had an unusual texture and begins to dissolve the moment it touches your tongue. It was very sweet, and I am quite certain it was made entirely of monosaccharides.

Such an item would fall into a certain subcategory of food, of which I have found many humans are quite fond, which possess little or no nutritional value but appear to be intended solely to cause pleasure via taste.

[ she furrows her brow in obvious self-conflict. once again, her borg sensibilities clash with her human instincts. it's an on-going, neverending battle. ]

But, taste is irrelevant. [ yet she sounds unsure. ]

[ The way she says that, and the context in which she evokes the Borg philosophy of irrelevance, is almost amusing. ]

For humans, taste is a significant component to nourishment. It can affect moods, evoke pleasant or unpleasant memories, and provide comfort.

My emotion chip grants me the ability to respond to taste, as well. I do not require sustenance, but I do enjoy experiencing different flavors. The sensation of an involuntary response based on something so subjective and elusive as taste is most intriguing.

[ if the doctor and neelix had explained this to her as data had just done, perhaps she wouldn't have been so objectionable towards being served food which had no nutritional value and been more willing to indulge their desire for her to ingest things that were tasteful and delicious. whether it was because data was an android or that he had been observing humanity for longer than she'd been alive -- possibly both -- but he seemed to know exactly how to convey information to her in a way that her still very borg mind could understand. ]

I remember-- I remember that as I child, before I was Borg, I enjoyed strawberries.

[ He's certainly inclined to be patient with the Borg characteristics of the way she approaches things - patience is in his nature already, but he certainly remembers the difference it made when people were patient with him as he learned things, as compared to those who were not. Needless to specify, of course - he remembers everything. ]

I believe there are strawberries in a number of the pastries - perhaps you would still enjoy them?

you get all my tl;dr this morning, apparently.

[ not many were. even the captain and the EMH had their limits when it came to being patient with her borg perspective. they often acted as if they expected her to shed those qualities that had been an integral part of her for eighteen years overnight, that she would somehow ascertain a human perspective as easily as one might find an item misplaced in her quarters. they neglected to take into account the fact that the only truly human personal experience she has to draw upon is that of a six-year-old child. a little girl who didn't know how to handle things like an adult, who would cry when she got scared, who wanted to play and not deal with responsibilities of any kind. applying what she remembers from her short youth to her adult life has little purpose, and does not serve to help her. she's had to pick it up practically all from scratch, and it's a process that has taken time -- more time than people are willing to give her. it's frustrating, and she has difficulty expressing -- nevermind conveying, as her ability to describe what she's feeling is sometimes worse than her ability to handle her own emotions -- that frustration in a way that doesn't come off as pure anger. ]

As long as none of them contain leola root or spinach, I believe I will. [ a joke. because she's trying. with people who show her patience and understanding, with people she genuinely likes, she's willing to try more with, to loosen up and not be as borg as she is normally.

what people fail to understand most of all is that the borg settings are largely a defense mechanism. she feels vulnerable when she acts more human, feels weak and unprotected. to be borg is to be immune to such things, giving her a sense of confidence in the best way she knows how. ]

i love your tl;dr, for the record

[ He actually does recognize the joke as such, and gives the tiniest quirk of a smile - it's encouraging, that she's trying, and he considers it important that he recognizes that outwardly. He even gives his own little joke in response. ]

It would seem that taste is not entirely irrelevant.

[ He does tilt his head slightly, curiously - he's not familiar with one of those. ]

Though, I am not familiar with leola root.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

oh good, because she's hard to play sans-tl;dr.

[ she takes pride in making someone smile, and it's different when it's someone not the captain or the doctor, who do so with a parental sort of pride. or harry kim, who is obviously infatuated with her, and naomi wildman, who continues to baffle her by looking up to her despite being borg. naomi once told her she was "awesome," something she doesn't agree with but is content in indulging the girl. perhaps because she never had the chance to be indulged herself. ]

It's a plant native to several planets in the Delta Quadrant. While it has a foul, unpleasant taste, it is high in nutrients and minerals, and Mr. Neelix often adds it to various meals he provides for the crew. They are not fond of it, but we did not always have the luxury of being able to use the replicators when supplies were low and had to rely on the food grown in the airponics bay.

Ah.

[ And he nods, that new bit of information filed away. He does have faith that Voyager will make its way back to the Alpha Quadrant - and that a wealth of information will come with them. This would simply be one stray example of that. ]

In spite of its taste, they are fortunate to have access to such a nutritionally beneficial food, particularly under the circumstances.

[ And with a glance at the table, ]

Fortunately, I do not believe it is likely to be found in any of the items present. Spinach, however, may be possible in certain items. If I should find any, I will be certain to advise you.
