We have no challenge this month, but we do have a volunteer activity:

If you would like a Snape/Lupin icon or banner or other graphic element, and you have some details in mind (words, images, etc.), leave a reply here with details and/or links. People who know how to make icons/digital art are welcome to keep an eye on this post and fulfill the requests.

I'll try to post reminders, but I am one harried mod this month. If anyone wants to start discussions or put up some candid captions or something else, please feel free!

The Masterlist for Fantasy Fest will not go up until October sometime, so if you're still working on yours, you're in the grey zone. Fantasy Fest is officially over for this year, which means participants are now welcome to repost their work or archive it (like at Moonshadow).

Heads-Up (meaning this is all tentative): We are planning an Art Big Bang for the early Winter/Spring. I am resisting calling it Snupin BLU 2: Art Boogaloo.

Artists: We will be looking for your original, finished Snape/Lupin pieces. A limit has not been set yet, but we will likely allow 1-3 pieces. A single piece can include a comic or image sequence. Deadline likely to be mid-February, but this heads-up is for anyone who wishes to start now.

Writers: There will likely be at least a 5000 word minimum, one writer per piece, first come, first served claiming. Writing period will be mid-February - March 31 (I hope!). The word count is high because this is a Big Bang - the idea is to encourage quality work.

Art and stories will be archived at the Snupin Big Bang site. Remember, if you make an account at the site, you will have some control over your work there and be able to respond to comments. Work would be postable/archivable elsewhere 1 month after going live. You are likely going to have to join one of our ninja locked snupin communities to work on this Big Bang.

I'm making this early announcement so that artists can begin work whenever they have time this fall and writers can make room in their schedules this spring. I don't have any other details, but if you have questions, please ask them because you may bring up an issue we'll have to figure out. An official announcement will probably come sometime in November, after most exchange deadlines.

I'm still around, still available; I'm just utterly pressed for time and the ability to concentrate so please don't be alarmed if it takes a few days for me to get back to you. Just wanted to let folks know that arionrhod and I have begun submitting the third - and final - part of the series we wrote for the BLU project! It's complete, but it's still being edited, so it'll be updated on the BLU site every couple of days or so. We didn't finish this story in time for the BLU deadline, but lore is letting us submit it to the site so all 3 "books" will be in one place.

The Awakening: Blood Feud, by Arionrhod and McKay

Summary: Although Severus and Remus are ready to settle down in a more peaceful lifestyle, their problems aren't over yet; the leader of the werewolves, Sirius, refuses to stop fighting, and his threats not only put Regulus and Gaius in danger, but the future of the vampire race is in jeopardy as well.
Content: supernatural but non-HP-magical AU, violence, vampirism with the associated blood-drinking and biting that comes with it.
Word count (so far): 11,143

Snupin: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is still ongoing. We have exactly two months until the first drafts are due on stories. That's still plenty of time to sign up as an artist or author! In fact, we already have our first story in, and the artists are mulling over their options as you read!

Now that BLU is underway, I've had some writers say that they're looking for ideas. Maybe you have some?

Post your basic story ideas for BLU writers to snag in reply to this post. In the spirit of this not turning into a sort of Fantasy Fest or Snupin Santa epic prompt thread, please try to stay within the following guidelines:

1. Post your idea anonymously. This will free the authors from worrying about whether you will like the fic and allow them to concentrate on writing the bunny you gave them.

2. Keep your idea short. The point is to give the authors a bunny to work with, not an outline for the entire fic.

Examples:
"Severus takes Animagus lessons so he can be with Remus during the full moons."
"Remus has been hiding his long-standing love affair with Severus from Teddy, now 16."

Oh yeah, there's a lot more I could add to those prompts (Who will Severus take lessons from? How does Teddy find out about the affair? Etc.), but it might be better to see where the authors will take basic ideas.

Post away, people! Authors, no need to stake a claim, as we'll know from the proposed plot synopsis on the Authors community if two of you are going down the same road. Have fun, everyone! Authors, there is also an ideas post on LJ.

Welcome to the organizational post for the Snupin: Bigger, Longer and Uncut project! The goal of this project is to produce a web site hosting illustrated Snape/Lupin novels and novelettes of the highest quality. There are four ways you can participate in this project:

1. Write - Produce a Snape/Lupin story anywhere from 25,000 words (25k) to 50,000 words and beyond.
2. Illustrate - Artists will be asked to produce at least two pieces to participate.
3. Volunteer - Positions will be listed and then possibly called for as needed (betaing included here).
4. Read - Once BLU is live, read and leave comments for the writers and artists.

We're going to discuss the first three to help us get underway. Readers, we'll be counting on you at the end of a long haul!

Finally, everything said here is flexible and subject to change based on what we learn along the way. The deadlines must remain hard, but how we get to them is another story. If you are a potential participant, you would be better off signing up early and keeping an eye on your respective project community for issues and updates. Also, as many of you well know, I will consider various opinions on my way to making decisions, so if you want a hand in your fate, be sure to stay informed on the process.

All right, if you've heard about us trying to do a Big Bang and are thinking about participating, your input into this discussion is imperative. There's no right or wrong way to do a Big Bang, so I want all your input to make sure that we do the things that are right for us as a community of writers and artists that want to participate in this sort of thing.

1. What is a Big Bang?
I've done some research and it looks like Harry/Draco did, indeed, start the Big Bang challenge. Since then, other pairings and fandoms have also done their own versions of Big Bangs. At its heart, a Big Bang challenge focuses on long stories archived at a web site with accompanying art.

Our Question:
Web site - Efiction archive (like the Snupin Santa archive) or something else?
Art - appear in line with the text or as a link in the text?

2. How long is a Big Bang story?
I've seen word counts as low as 20,000 and as high as 50,000.

Our Questions:
What do we want for our minimum length? (For our community, we usually count 40k as a novel-length)
Do we want more than one length allowed? (novella and novel-length?)

3. What subjects are covered by a Big Bang?
Originally, the HD group focused on post-canon stories with emphasis on canon characterizations, but that seemed to expand with each successive Big Bang.

Our Questions:
Do we want to get at the root of Snape/Lupin, i.e., our own Big Bang? (If not, we should rename this challenge.)
Do we want no subject guidance, i.e. anything goes, or do we want some topics? (I've thought of Page and Pixels, which is a fun way of saying Canon and Fanon.)
What do we want to emphasize with the challenge? Canon? Characterization? Cliche exploration, or fanon? Or just plain story-telling?
What are your ideas for subject areas?

4. How is a Big Bang run?
From what I can tell, sign-ups are not required, although some Big Bangs did take sign-ups. The topic areas are announced and authors are given anywhere from 3 to 6 months to write their fics. There is an early draft deadline given so that artists can start working on illustrations, with a final draft due about a month later. And the archivists gave themselves anywhere from two weeks to a month after the final deadline to encode a site with all the fic and art.

Our Questions:
Sign-ups, yes or no?
How long for writing? How long for art? How long for web site? (in other words, deadlines!)
When should the first draft be due?

5. How are artists recruited and assigned to a fic?
This is the sketchiest part of my research. It appears that artists were invited to the HD BBs, and some BBs had no art whatsoever. I have no clue how artists were assigned to each story, whether they were given the early drafts and staked their claims or they were assigned to a certain fic. Most fics at HD had multiple artists with no repeats, and each fic seemed to have roughly the same number of illustrations.

Our Questions:
Recruit artists via invite or volunteers only, or both?
How should artists be assigned to a fic? Random? Given choice of all fics? Assign a set of artists to illustrate an entire fic?
Does anyone know anything more about how artists are handled for events like a BB?

Other Questions:
Handle BB stuff here on the community, or take it to a private community where authors and artists can share with and support each other?
Keep the art under wraps from all until the reveal, including the Authors?
Who gets final beta, the mods or the author?
Should there be motivational prizes for authors to make certain deadlines (like 10k per month), and if so, what kind of prize? (HD did this)
How can volunteers be utilized so lore isn't doing this all herself?

What else have I not asked or not covered?

Remember, your input is vital if you're thinking of participating in this in some way. I'll take comments through next Saturday, January 10, and then I'll put together an official announcement post on the 11th.

Also, if the idea of writing even 20,000 words seems daunting to you, you can all also consider volume 2 of Chocolate and Asphodel open. The minimum word count for it is only 3000 words, and I will be putting a word cap on this volume, but I'm waiting to see what our Big Bang final word count is before I make that limit. Do not ask C&A questions here. There will be a separate organizational post once we get the BB up and running. There's just nothing to stop anyone from beginning art or stories for it now.
