WHO: Nymphadora Tonks and Rose Tyler
WHAT: The arrival of Miss Tonks
WHEN: Day 2, afternoon
WHERE: The center of the City of Illusions
WARNINGS: PG-ish?
STATUS: Complete

It was a sad state of affairs when she would wish for the company of Severus Snape. She'd never really liked him, and the events that had happened all those months ago on Mirage had left their mark on her. But she needed Snape right now, that was the simple truth. She didn't know of any Healers on the Planet, and Snape, while a greasy, unpleasant git, was someone who could probably help her. But he'd disappeared, and it was most inconvienant at the moment.

For the last few months, Tonks had been feeling rather ill. At first, she'd tried to ignore it and hoped it would go away. Eventually, though, she'd been forced to seek out the unpleasant Potions Master. Only to find he'd disappeared, which was beyond annoying. Still, what else could she do? But she was so tired all the time. Still, she'd likely just caught some sort of Muggle illness, and left it at that. It would pass, she figured.

Still, it had been going on for awhile now. But it hadn't impacted her life that much, and she almost thought it was starting to get better. The throwing up had stopped, anyway, and the tiredness seemed better. Maybe she would recover. Still, it couldn't hurt to have talked to Professor Snape about it. But since that couldn't happen, she tried her best to forget about it.

One day, though, which was not so very different from any other day, she was simply minding her own business when everything changed. She thought maybe she would seek out Marcus, when a black hole opened up in front of her. She didn't even have time to scream. In fact, she barely did anything but think to herself Merlin, here we go again... before she was being sucked down into it.

She landed on a grassy lawn and looked around. It was a strange place, almost sparkly, and she frowned as her dark eyes took everything in. The tents, the jousting, the general activity... and then it occured to her just what had happened. She gasped, and then shook her head. "...Marcus... no!"" She gradually came to understand all the implications, and for some odd reason, found herself rather dizzy. She fought it off, though, and set her jaw determinedly. She was going to get back to her lover. There was just no other way she would accept things.

All she had to do was figure out how. Someone was walking by nearby, and she called out to her. "Excuse me, can you please explain where I am? This isn't Mirage, is it?"

Well, she was certainly a friendly one, Rose would give her that. Despite her obvious worry over the situation, and in fairness who wouldn't be, the young woman seemed completely good-natured. It might've been a bit irritating were Rose not so desperate for someone who she could lean on in this place. She was growing more independent since she'd been away from the Doctor, but considering the huge switch in her life with little to no warning, she was undoubtedly needier than usual. And this was te first truly kind person she'd met in person.

Considering this fact, Rose tucked a piece of hair, much lighter and more boring than her companion's, behind her ear. "No," she aid quietly. "I don't think so, at least. There's so many people here, though... It's hard to tell. I know one girl, she said she was from Greece and she apparently has battled the gods? I know she said she was from this...this Mirage. A living planet." A phenomenon still so baffling to Rose that she'd give anything to be back at Torchwood, analyzing the possibilities. "No men, though, sorry. Course, I only just got here myself. Still meeting people." Well, she would be if she'd ever leave her room. Now was the time, she supposed.

About this place? God, what was there to tell? "We've been kidnapped," she supplied, considering the woman's questions carefully. Strange? That wasn't the adjective Rose would've chosen. "By some horrible little creature who's declared himself king. And, so he says, there's no way out. You'll get a journal and a key to your room... Ours hovered in front of us till we took it. Enchanted, I guess? Never believe in magic much before now but..." But there was no denying some of the things happening around her were, indeed, beyond ordinary scientific explanation. Not without plenty more thought, at least. "It's insane, I'll grant you that." What was it she'd told the tattoo-ed bloke? That perhaps it was about time she went insane? Truer story was never told.

Tonks had never needed to be told that one attracted more flies with honey than vinegar, she knew it instinctively. It had to have come from her father, since none of the Black family really had that particular character trait. But it was completely natural and unforced, and she often found people reacted very positively to her after speaking to her for awhile. That was just fine with her, of course. She liked meeting new people and making friends.

Her gaze brightened as the woman spoke of a person she had met. She had seen both Xena and Gabrielle in Mirage, though she'd only spoken to Xena. However, the way this woman spoke of her could fit. At least, Xena had said that she was from Greece. She spoke quickly, obviously excited. "Gabrielle? Did she have a tall woman with her, dark-haired?" She wouldn't mind seeing Xena again, really. The woman had helped her out quite a bit. But she soon calmed down a bit, realizing that the woman had said she hadn't seen Marcus.

"Horrible little creature..." This got her attention. Mirage had been a Planet, impossible to truly fight or hurt. But a person, or some sort of being? That was a different story. One could win free of a being, one could fight back. "Kidnapped again, brilliant." She spoke with a sort of easy sarcasm, but smiled at Rose to let her know it wasn't directed towards her. Tonks was just a little sick of being kidnapped, that smile said. It wasn't personal.

"Okay, so I need to find this key and the book." She tilted her head to the side as she looked at Rose. "Are you okay? You look a bit peaky..." She frowned thoughtfully. "I'm Tonks, by the way... so where is this odd little creature?"

The girl talked quite a bit, but that suited Rose just fine for the moment. She wasn't exactly feeling jabbery. It also reminded her a bit of her mum, talking to cover up loads of problems at once, even though this woman couldn't have been much older than Rose herself was. It was comforting, just the same, especially since this Tonks character was one of the few Rose had heard with a similar accent to her own. So many voices all around and so few sounded comforting in the slightest.

"Gabrielle, I think so, yeah. I haven't seen her--well, actually, I probably have, I've probably seen everyone here. There's not that many, after all." Except those odd little creatures. Goblins or something, she'd swear, but they weren't real, were they? "But I've only spoken to her through the book they'll give you. You write in it, people write back. Like..." She'd say 'chatting', but so few here seemed to have a clue what that was. "Like letter writing, but instantly. So I don't know if there's anyone else here with her, or even what she looks like."

At this Tonks person's question, Rose managed a smile, if weak smile. "Just a bit tired of being pulled through dimensions, honestly. Takes a toll on you, physically, you know?" Well, maybe she didn't. But she had been kidnapped before, so many she had some idea. Rose herself had only just begun exploring the different universes and dimensions in time and space, and it had all been so experimental that she hadn't been prepared for the actual physical weaknesses that it would cause. "I'm sorry, listen to me babble on, no manners. I'm Rose." She was so careful about the words she spoke and to who, and especially using her name, but if she was correct and this world was different from any of the Earth ones she'd visited, it shouldn't matter. Should it? "He's... I don't know, actually." Rose glanced around, but none of the beings around her resembled the one that had addressed the lot of them the day before. "I haven't seen him since. He is the High King, after all, probably thinks he's too good to come mingle with his minions."

But, much to her own surprise, a tiny smile flickered over her features, and though her tone was sarcastic, it was also almost playful. Bugger. She couldn't go getting too comfortable here.

Tonks could tell that Rose was calming down a bit, and it made her happy. She liked it when the people are her were comfortable. It made everything more pleasant, and that was something she was keenly interested in. Plus, now that the girl was talking a bit more, she noted that the accent was more than a little familiar. Tonks had an odd mixture of elements to her voice. Her mother was upper class, her father a Muggle with a Cockney accent, so the combination was interesting.

"A book!" Tonks brightened up considerably. If it was like the journals she knew of, she would be okay. She could keep in contact with people, and try to track Marcus down. It should be easy to find out if he was here. But for now, she had to focus on getting all the information she could. "Well, hopefully I'll run into people I know."

She smiled at the other woman. "Although I always like meeting new people, too. Life gets boring, otherwise." She nodded in response to Rose's comment. "Yeah, I'm a bit off it myself, actually. I want to go home. My family will be missing me." She shrugged and glanced around, once more taking everything in. Her gaze went back to her companion, however, when the girl introduced herself.

"Hullo, Rose!" She spoke cheerfully enough, though without the trace of cloying, sickeningly-sweet tone that some people used. "Huh. Okay. A High King. Well, maybe I'll have to find him and have a couple of words with him." None of which would be pleasant words, she was sure. She returned the sarcastic smile.

"So, have you found your room? I should go find mine... have you had a chance to look around much yet? Is there anything I'm supposed to do? Merlin, this is getting tiresome. I don't want to figure this place out, but I guess I don't have much choice."

The girl could talk ninety miles an hour and all without getting a hair out of place. It was admirable, actually, considering she'd apparently already gone through this once. Rose had to give a small laugh. Considering some of the not so pleasant people she'd seen so far, it was obvious this one would brighten the place up. Literally, if not just figuratively.

"Right, the book. Thing. It's kind of brilliant, now that I'm thinking about it. That's how I met Gabrielle. And found out about Mirage, too." She sighed, then, as the other woman mentioned her family back home. "I've a baby brother back home. Just an ickle thing, won't even remember me now, if I don't get home. Mum's probably gone mad with worry by now--though maybe not, running off is a bit of a thing for me, it seems." God, she'd known this girl what, a half an hour at the most? Already she felt like she was pouring out her life story. Why not just blather about her favourite program on the telly while she was at it?

Merlin. Another one who believed in the gods. But Merlin hadn't been a god, had he? No, no, he was that wizard that tagged along with King Arthur or something. Damn, she wished she'd paid more attention in school.

"I've only just really started checking the place out," Rose admitted, though not with much regret. She felt she had a right to be a bit put off about being snatched out of her world (again) and yanked into one she'd rather not be in (again) without the people who mattered the most to her (sort of again). "I don't know how, exactly, they decide where you're sleeping, actually. If they're going to kidnap you, they ought to at least have the courtesy to guide you to the right place. There's rooms, though, in dorms, like we're students at University or something. I don't know for sure, but they'll probably be able to tell you everything in them. If you can deal with talking to little creatures." Oi, she was tired of those creepy little things already.

The witch was starting to have a good time, actually. Though Rose had been curt at first, and somewhat dismissive, but now she was becoming excellent company. Actually, even beside the accent, they did seem to be similar in some ways. Tonks definitely approved of the slightly sarcastic wit the woman showed. It mirrored her own.

"Oh, I should do an entry." She was familiar with how this worked, and decided that as soon as she got half a second she would do just that. "Oh, a baby!" She grinned, but then sobered as she realized that Rose didn't get to see him anymore. "I have no brothers or sisters. A couple of cousins, but I'm not really on speaking terms with them. And at least one of my aunts would like to kill me." To Tonks, it didn't seem unusual to be spilling her life story to the other woman. It was sort of how she was.

"Oh, I see." She nodded wisely, and offered the woman another smile. "Do you want to explore it together? We can learn at the same time." Besides, as the woman was the only person she knew for sure that she knew here, she was not really interested in losing her company yet.

"Oh, the little things talk!" That was new to her. The golems hadn't. But she thought that might be useful, too. She looked around and saw a strange looking green lumpy looking think skulking around. "Is that one?" She pointed.

An aunt who'd tried to kill her? Well, Rose supposed that one-upped most of her near-death experiences, though she'd probably take one aunt over an arse-load of Daleks.

But a friend was a friend, and Rose needed one now more than ever. And here was one, custom made and ready to figure out what the heck was going on. That and, well, it didn't hurt knowing she wasn't the only one dying to go home. "That...might be nice," she admitted slowly, her eyes averting the other woman's for a moment. She hadn't wanted to get too comfortable here and yet... If she really was here to stay, or even for an exceedingly long time, she had to talk to someone didn't she?

"The King one definitely does," she added a second later, shuddering at the reminder. Ew. Evil little thing he was. "So I'm guessing the others do. Or maybe they communicate some other way? We'll see, I guess, that's definitely one of them and it's..." Her nose wrinkled. How did this little creature make the entire Slitheen family look attractive?

Tonks decided to take that as agreement. It was good enough for her, even if Rose was clearly doubtful. She could understand. She wasn't exactly excited about the idea of getting too comfortable here. But it did make sense to her to learn the lay of the land, at least for now. It would serve no purpose to be lost, and she might learn something that would be useful later.

"Right, then that works." She continued to look at the odd little thing until she got Rose's response. "Great." She raised her voice. "Excuse me? Weird ugly thing?" It obediantly stumped over to her, and she looked at it for a second. "Do you talk? I want to go to my room, where is it?"

The thing did talk, though in English that had even Tonks shuddering, it was so bad. "Okay, fine. Thanks." She tilted her head to the side. "Anything you wanna ask it, Rose? I can go to my room later, we could find out what sorts of things are here. Other than the bloody odd carnival around here."

Rose couldn't help herself. She giggled as Tonks addressed the creature, and giggled harder at its reply. Maybe there was hope for this blasted place after all.

"No," she replied as Tonks questioned her about questions for the little thing. "Not unless it knows a way out of here. And since I doubt its great and powerful King would approve of it telling us one way or the other..." She shrugged in annoyance, giving the animal thing her best glare. Which, she had to say, was rather impressive. Came from years of she and Jackie living in the same house, especially through Rose's teenaged years. "Or if it knows something to do around here other than play Damsel in Distress. Got tired of that game when I was seven, don't plan to revisit it ever." After all, though there'd been times she herself had been rescued, she was just as fond of the times she'd done the rescuing. And there'd been plenty, thanks.

Tonks nodded, flashing Rose a smile. Then, she waved the little goblin thing off. "You can go." She was normally fairly nice to house elves and goblins and things, but this felt like a different set of circumstances somehow. She just wasn't as inclined as usual to be nice, that was all. After all, she had just been kidnapped. Again.

"Damsel in distress? Sorry, that's a game I don't play." In fact, Tonks would be rather disgusted with herself if she ever did resort to that. Not that her work as an Auror hadn't put her in danger from which she'd needed help to remove herself, but that wasn't the same as waiting around for someone to save her. She could handle that.

She looked around and grinned. "Well, there's lots of stuff to do around here. We could go fight with swords." Which would probably leave Tonks bleeding. She wasn't the best with her coordination. "Or eat. There's lots of eating places around." She glanced around and then pointed. "Hey, that building in the middle of all the others looks important, don't you think?"

Rose liked the girl's exploratory nature. A prickling thought occurred to her that she had a mind that would do well at Torchwood before reminding herself that Torchwood wasn't a part of her life, at least for the moment. And, if it ever was again, it was doubtful Tonks would be there as well. A shame, that.

"The eating here is overwhelming," Rose admitted, glancing around as her fellow inmates, as she was coming to think of them, were eating everything in sight. And the music lessons had sounded interesting. She had to admit, she loved learning the culture of others. She just wished it hadn't had to be at the expense of losing her home and her family. "But we could go see what's going on over there, if you wanted. No idea, honestly, I really haven't checked this place out quite as much as I probably should have."

If he were here with her, they would've already dissected the place, interviewed the other residents, and befriended the goblin things. But that was then and this was now, wasn't it? Rose wasn't looking forward to being best mates with her kidnappers, either.

"Everything here is overwhelming..." She shook her head as she looked around. "I don't know what they're thinking, really. This looks nothing like what I've heard about what the Middle Ages actually were like." In some ways, the wizarding world was stuck back in those times, so she knew what she was talking about a bit.

It suited her to explore, though. She nodded slightly. "Yeah, let's do that." After all, she might find a couple of people she knew. Even if she didn't, this was valuable knowledge to obtain, insofar as knowing your enemy. Also, she was enjoying the girls company. It all added up for the witch, and she set off in a random direction.

"Oh, look!" She pointed ahead of her, tripping her way forward. She wasn't the most graceful person in the world, and had a hard time keeping her own feet out of her way. "It's a weird muggle instrument! I think I saw one in a picture once!" It was, in fact, a harpsichord, and she found the music coming from it to be quite beautiful. There were several other instruments she didn't recognize, but the effect of all of them together was quite striking.

"A what instrument?" Rose asked, baffled and yet pleased by the girl's rambling. It was a nice change from the silence of her room. She would've asked if she was alright, but Tonks seemed to go on as if nothing had happened. She must've been used to it. Shareen had been clumsy enough at times, which is why Rose refused to sneak up to the roof of the school with her. Just in case.

"A harpsichord," Rose pondered, glancing at the instrument with interest. "You know, there's an entire planet where they use our instruments from all over time. That's is a pretty popular one, actually." God, how long had it been since they'd been there? One of the more uneventful stops, thank goodness, but fun and quiet and peaceful, just the same. She never thought she'd give anything to be back there but now? She definitely would.

She looked around, curious about the way everything was set up. "I wonder what made them decorate the place this way?" Rose questioned out loud. "It's nice, I guess, but... Even people back home don't enjoy this stuff that much. Maybe a couple of times a year, but that's about it."

"Muggle." She glanced over at Rose and sighed softly. She really did have to stop calling people that. She'd come to the conclusion that, even when it wasn't meant that way, it came off a bit rude. She didn't like that. So she once more made a mental note to be more careful, and knew that she would probably forget again. A habit of a lifetime is not broken in a period of days, or even months.

She listened with interest as Rose spoke. "Really? That sounds bloody brilliant!" She pictured the place vividly in her head. It sounded interesting to her. "I would love to see that sort of thing. One time I met a nutter who had enchanted all sorts of instruments to play all at once... and all out of tune. Merlin, I'm surprised I don't still have the headache."

Tonks shrugged. "I dunno, really. Maybe this King bloke has a thing for history." Although that didn't seem to make sense. This was extremely historically inaccurate. But she couldn't think of a better reason. She looked at the music practice for awhile longer, and then stepped back. She wasn't really very musical, and tended to like her music a little bit more edgy than this.

And yet muggle still told her nothing. It sounded like something someone might name a chihuahua or a big fluffy cat. She'd ask later, when it seemed less rude and more curious. Right then, she was much more curious about how much this Tonks actually knew about the history of these instruments...and history in general. She'd never actually felt the shows people put on were all that accurate, especially not having traveled back to said time in history herself.

"If he does," Rose began, giving Tonks a careful look to see if she'd give away anything extra about herself, "then he needs to do a bit more reading up on it. For one, the people aren't dying in the street of pestilence. For another, it looks a bit more like a street faire, with all the traveling performers and what have you." Which sort of lost its appeal when, instead of a woman in a long and beautiful dress, it was a little gnomish looking creature. Not quite the attractive picture the ladies of the time had made.

"Want to keep looking, then? See if perhaps we can spot any other historical inaccuracies? This one's not really doing it for me." That and the newcomer looked terribly uncomfortable for some reason or another. Couldn't be the progressively grating sounds of an old-fashioned instrument being played quite badly.

The witch put her hands over her ears, feeling like she might be deafened by the contrasting musical stuff. She listened to some interesting music herself, a lot of which her mother really, really disliked, but this even went beyond her taste in music. She backed away rather quickly, and was glad as the discordant noises faded away behind them.

The witch shrugged slightly. "Yeah, pretty much." She'd odone her own studies of the times, though not to the point of actually going back to them, as Rose had. Not that Tonks knew that. "Anyway, it's really weird. I don't see how we're supposed to live in a place like this." She frowned, wondering if it would ever change. If this place was anything like Mirage... but it seemed to her that it both was and wasn't.

"Yes, that sounds like a really brilliant plan." She glanced around, and then pointed. "Oh, look, dancing!" Obviously by the way that Tonks tripped over to the pavilion with the dance music coming from it, she would never be a dancer. But she did look curiously at the dancers, who were all human in form, but tended to have faces that you forgot as soon as you saw them. Shw frowned. "I bet that king guy made them..."

"Curious, isn't it?" Rose questioned, as much to herself as to her companion. "How you can never quite focus on them?" She was thinking again, and while once that might've been dangerous, these days it was all she did. Thinking of how to get back, thinking of how to stop the darkness from coming, and thinking of the past. But now she was thinking of how something didn't add up about this place. "I wonder if they ever stop dancing. You know, if they're machines or just...images or something." She tried to make eye contact with just one, but it never seemed to quite work.

Shaking her head, Rose gave a small sigh. "Well, it looks like we're stuck here, so I certainly hope we're just here on a holiday or something. Because I'm not entirely sure I could stand this for long." The music played in the pavilion was okay, but nothing she could imagine herself listening to for months on end. Months. Years. When King Whatisface said never leaving, how long did never really mean?

Tonks' eyes widened, and she looked with sympathy at the dancers. To her, being trapped like that would be unbearable. "Oh, I hope not... how awful if that was true." She kept looking at them for awhile longer, and then shook her head. "I can't just leave them there if they're under the Imperius..."

She took out her wand and pointed it straight at one of the dancers. If anyone was being forced to dance, she had the inclincation to stop it. "Finite Incantatem!" The spell worked, insofar as she felt it leave her wand. However, there was absolutely no effect. The dancers kept dancing, and didn't so much as look at her.

"Oh well." She sighed softly and tucked her wand back away. "I would like to look around more, but I think I'll go to my room first. Do you think we could meet again?"

At first, Rose was too busy staring at the wooden stick Tonks had used, and paying attention to the strange words she'd used, to notice much else. Good God, she'd never get used to this place if this kept up. It was one thing to hear that someone was a witch, but to watch them throwing around magic spells? What was next, someone into a toad? "Bloody hell, that was brilliant," she murmured, then shook her head, focusing more intently on the girl in front of her.

"That'd be nice, I think," Rose replied, finding she actually meant it. She'd had fun, for the most part, and it was nice not being cooped up in her room being sulky. Maybe her Mum had been right all those months ago, maybe getting out and about was the right way to heal. "Once you've had some time to settle in. Not that I think getting used to this place is on the agenda," she added with a wry smile. "But just the same. And rest, too, traveling parallel universes really does take its toll on you."

Tonks glanced over at the pretty woman, and smiled brightly. She kept forgetting what effect her magic could have on people who didn't know what it was, and had never seen it before. It pleased her, however, that Rose seemed amazed rather than scared. "Thanks! It seems normal to me, sometimes I forget... but it didn't do anything."

The witch backed out of the tent, glancing around once more. It really was a remarkable place, though she was sure it was going to get old pretty quickly. "Yeah, I'd kinda like to get out of here before getting used to it, but it can't hurt to get more information." She smiled at the other woman. "I think we can probably communicate through the journals, so we should arrange to meet again!" She was quite sincere, she'd liked the girl a lot.

"I'll see you later!" She flashed another bright smile to the girl and a cheery wave as she headed off in the direction that the goblin had pointed her. She had enjoyed that more than she'd thought, meeting Rose. But she needed to find her room now.
