Note: a few weeks after this
Hel missed Hades. For as lovely as Nyx was, and how welcoming her family had been, Hades was different. Nyx was a friend, but she was also almost a mother figure to Hel, whereas Hades was just a genuine friend. Whether or not Hel sort of, kind of had a crush on Hades might have had a bit to do with her wanting to see him.
Okay, more than a bit.
Not that she would act on it. Hades had made it clear enough without even knowing Hel's feelings that he was devoted to his wife. Far be it for her to come between all that. She knew what it was to watch another woman destroy a family. As far as she was concerned, it was exactly what Sigyn had done.
Hel liked Sigyn as well as a girl who barely knew her new stepmother could, at least on the surface. There wasn't anything to actually dislike about the woman. She was nice and all, and she actually seemed to want to get to know her husband's daughter. But that didn't stop Hel from feeling bitter. Sigyn had taken her father away; it was as clear as a sunny day in Asgard. Then Sigyn had to go and have babies. Babies that grew up, at which point everything went to shit. Now her father was gone forever. Sure, he'd get out, but then there was that whole end of the world thing to look forward to, and that would be it.
It sucked.
Somehow or other, Hades seemed to understand. Like the others of his realm she had met, he seemed to have found nothing unusual about her, or at least nothing worth scorning her for. He understood she was what she was, and looks weren't everything. Like Nyx, he'd been horrified to hear of what had transpired in the young queen's life. He was a good shoulder to lean on, but an even better friend to laugh with, which Hel was kind of feeling the need to do. It was also his time away from his wife, as she did her whole earthy, flowery thing. Which meant he was also probably in need of a little break. He always seemed to dig into his work and forget how to smile when Persephone was gone.
Hel stopped just inside the gate to pet Cerberus' heads (all the while keeping an eye on that middle head- she'd learned to never quite trust it), before turning to take the path to Hades' home.
