Dean was shifting through his paints once she'd agreed to his vague plan, but he looked up when she asked her question, pleased to see she'd got her hair neatly out of the way. "Nope," he said, shaking his head a little. "Well, apart from closing your eyes while I'm painting your lids. The paint is pretty quick drying so once I'm out of your immediate eye area you should be able to open them again. Kind of depends how much you mind paintbrushes near your face with them open," he said and shrugged. He always asked children getting anything near their eyes to keep them closed until he was done, but that tended to be more because they kept shifting away from the brushes than anything else.

He picked up a light green paint pot and a smallish flat brush. "Actually I'm going to start in the centre, so if you wouldn't mind closing your eyes?" he asked. "Once I'm done with your eye sockets you should be good to open them again if you'd like."

Her lips quirked up faintly. She lifted a shoulder in a half shrug. "I doubt I'll mind, so long as you don't poke me in the eye," she said. "I've had worse things in my face than something with soft bristles." And she had, too. Aunt Bellatrix and her uncles hadn't been kind, and some of that stuff was nearer the top of her mind than thr depths she'd pushed it to the last few years.

Pandora took a deep breath and leaned her arms carefully on the table and closed her eyes. Without having a fresh dose of calming draught she doubted she'd trust this Gryffindor to do this while she couldn't see him, but she threw care to the wind at least for the moment. "Just let me know when I can open them again," she told him.

He huffed. "I've been painting kids mostly so far and nobody's gone away crying yet," he reassured her. Whiny, yes, when the dragon wasn't exactly the right shade of blue (which he didn't have), bit of a temper tantrum at the lack of glitter, but no actual tears.

"Of course," he said and got to painting right away, covering her eyelids with smooth strokes before sweeping across the bridge of her nose between them and then moving carefully to do under her eyes, getting as close as he could to her eyeline while being sure he wasn't going to poke her with bristles. He worked carefully outwards, filling in the area to just around the outside of her eye sockets with the lightest green he was using. When he was done with that he shifted his head side to side a little checking her eyelids were dry. "You can open your eyes for now," he said, reaching for his next shade. She'd need to close them again in a bit when he was done with the base colours, but for now she'd be fine.

"I'm glad the weather's holding," he said. There was no guarantee that the start of may would be dry, and indeed previous years it had been at least somewhat wet. He wasn't sure how she felt about small talk, but that seemed the safest topic, and at least one that would keep them away from the purpose of the day, which was touchy to say the least.

Dora chuckled quietly, even if her heart wasn't quite in it. "Well then I'll strive not to be worse than the children," she said.

It tickled, almost. But somehow the brush and the paint was almost soothing, and she sighed quietly. Her fingers slowly traced shapes on her other hand, not impatient at all, just quietly doing something to also be soothing.

She blinked a couple of times once she was free to do so. Her eyes adjusted and focussed on him again, flitting to his lips as he spoke again. "I was surprised it was this fair out," she said. "I really did expect it to be wet. But at least there's sunshine to cheer things up a bit." It was her first year doing this, and she was grateful for that much cooperation from the weather at least.

The woman thankfully didn't seem to be too twitchy or ticklish so he didn't have to keep stopping for that.

"Yes, it does a bit," he agreed faintly. It wasn't like she was a child, she was probably somewhere around his own age so she knew only too well what they were commemorating here. He didn't recognise her though, so he didn't want to presume anything and ask any more.

He began to work with the next colour, starting to extend the right side, as he looked at her, slightly further down her cheek to make the asymmetry work. Nothing intricate so far, just a little blending between the two edges of colour. "Are you here with someone?" he asked, and then winced and continued. "I, er, can work in silence if you like, I know it's not the easiest day for people." He knew that only too well. He'd taken a little extra calming potion this morning and he had some emergency in his pocket too and was half expecting to need it later.

She kept her eyes somewhat downcast, though she subtly studied him. He was the artist from that museum, she thought, and barely suppressed a shudder at the thought. She hadn't been triggered so hard in public in so long, and the memory still embarrassed her.

Dora gave him a careful smile, not wanting to disturb his painting of her face. "No, you're fine. Talk is better than too much time with my thoughts," she said. "So it's easier. I just didn't want to disturb your painting." Her nose twitched faintly as something tickled faintly, and she forced it still. "I'm here with a group. I probably wouldn't have come if I hadn't come with them," she said. "It's my first year attending this thing."

He painted quickly but carefully, blending the edges of the two colours and working outwards until he switched to a third, darker colour, doing the same again and finalising his decision about the edge of the shape, deciding against the scallops and turning the lower bottom corner into a focal point instead, shaping somewhat like a classic teardrop, or perhaps running paint.

"I know what too much time alone with your thoughts can do, especially this time of year," he said, pausing and frowning at his work for a second before moving on, satisfied. "And actually I'm not going near your mouth so talking is fine," he said. He sorted quickly and grabbed a grey to paint shadows and silver to outline the mask and start on some patterns.

"I've not really been before either. Working through it will probably help me anyway," he offered.

Her lips twitched once, automatically, as the brush tickled once, but other than that small movement, she didn't move so as not to disturb him. It took a modicum of self control, but not nearly as much as what she'd exerted other times in her life.

"I can see how working through it would help," she conceded. However, her aunt had had a wise moment and Elroy was manning the booth that handed out fun illusion charms for the children to play with and such. As much as it would have given her other things to do and divert her mind, the likelihood of conflict was much too much to risk it. "It wasn't an option for me this time, alas. I hope it helps you, though," she offered back. It didn't matter to her that they'd been on opposite sides of the war, anyone haunted by the war had her sympathy.

Dean's plan for the decorations for the mask was coming together nicely as he worked, edging the shape first and adding a couple of shadows to make it look more like it was an actual mask. Then he switched for a really dark green and started to add swirling lines that were something of a cross between vines and leaf stems. Part way through he suddenly remembered he request for the scale-like stencil and picked it up to try and work it in around the edges and perhaps across her eyes.

"The concentration is keeping me distracted, which is a start," he said, which was certainly true enough. "Can you close your eyes a sec?" he asked, wobbling the stencil sheet slightly to show what he was intending to do.

It took a minute or two to get it looking right, trying to marry the scales and the flowering vines so it made sense for her to have scaled eyelids, but he got there, his slight frown as he leaned back and assessed turning slowly to a slow nod.

Dora's eyelids lowered after a moment, and she held perfectly and precisely still, hands folded neatly and still now in front of her. The calming draught helped a lot, though inside parts of her were still fraught with grief and pain and memories. "Concentration and I are old friends for that reason," she murmured, the feeling still odd of the brush on her face, especially with her eyes closed.

She opened her eyes and let him regard her for a long moment before speaking. "So, success?" she questioned. If he were satisfied as an artist, it would go a long way to assuring her she looked good with the facepaint.

"Beyond the fact I love and am good at my job, art is a great distraction for me. Most of the time you can immerse yourself in whatever you're creating and ignore everything around you. Although sometimes you can do the sort of jobs that let your mind wander and contemplate whatever," he said. He didn't often voice this sort of reasoning aloud but he'd thought it often enough and he knew well it was the sort of day for it to be mildly helpful, or just shareable.

He smiled slowly at her question. "I think so," he said. "I could add more flowers maybe, but I think it would start to look crowded," he said, grabbing the hand-held mirror which was being used to show the clients their finished faces. He passed it to the woman, gesturing slightly to the scattering of delicate pink flowers he had painted on the vines.

"Your work is good. You had the showing, right?" she said, almost offhand. "Yes. Some tasks free up your mind while others fill it. It depends on what you want. I prefer to simply keep busy most of the time." If she kept busy and didn't let her mind wander, she coped infinitely better than if she let herself dwell and think too much, as she'd done the last few days.

She shook her head slightly as she looked in the mirror. She pulled out the pin and let go of the spell at the same time, letting the green streaked locks tumble to frame the mask. She smiled, and this time it did reach her eyes, possibly the first time all day. "No, it looks great," she told him, voice sincere. "I'm glad I decided to have it done." If it made her happy for even a few minutes, well, then it was definitely worth it.

He was surprised to be reminded of the show, but pleased all the same. "Thank you, and yes I had a show with the others I share a building with at the end of last year. All the painters are taking at least one shift on the stall actually," he said. He knew the sign said that the artists would change, but that was in far smaller writing than that detailing the fact there was face painting available. He nodded his understanding of her preference, it was definitely one he'd been feeling himself lately, regardless of the time of year.

Dean couldn't help smiling when he saw her reaction to her finished face. Working on adults was far more intimidating than working on children. They tended to be harder to effectively please. "I'm glad you like it," he said with equal sincerity. "And it goes well with your hair, too."

"Do you think you'll do another?" she asked, not sure if she would attend even if he was. It wasn't because he was a bad artist, either; rather, he was too good, and she didn't know if she could handle the humiliation of another public breakdown.

"Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted, to match for the day. Glamours only go so far -- the paint will be easier to maintain for the day." Though admittedly she had ideas for Halloween glamours, but they were nebulous and she would let them percolate before pursuing them.

"Another show?" he asked, then shrugged and nodded. "Sure. I share a building with three other people and we do a show together about every eighteen months or two years. I know Cadmus has done a solo show before, and I think Braith did some with other friends too, although not for a while. That's, er, Cadmus Urqhart and Braith Whitehead. I have one or two things at a muggle coffee shop that has some wall space but I haven't done my own show yet. I'm not far past my apprenticeship," he said and shrugged again. Aside from Susan who firmly did NOT count he'd only had a few repeat clients.

He paused, considering her for a few moments before explaining quietly. "I am doing a bit of a project at the moment, collecting words that haunt people along with descriptions of locations they associate them with. I'm going to mix and match all of the submissions and create a patchwork painting from them. If you're interested there's an anonymous collection box over to the side of the stall and a note of the instructions." His lips twitched into an encouraging sort of smile as he gestured in the appropriate direction. It was intentionally out of his sight line and placed so it might look like someone submitting was just looking over the booth.

He nodded, not sure why she might want to hide for the day. It might mean she was well known or from the losing side, which sent a small clench through his stomach, but she'd been nothing but nice to him so he resolved not to make anything of it. "There's a spell I can do to stop it smudging if you like, but it won't end with a straight Finite," he offered. It was straightforward enough he could write the spell and explain the extra downwards flick.

He glanced briefly at the price list before naming his price, knocking off a couple of sickles from the price he should have charged because he'd enjoyed their conversation too, and she'd given him some artistic license which was far more fun than what even most of the nicest children could manage. Especially if they had pushy parents. It was only him making the loss anyway since they were all recording what they did to share the small profits.

Dora's head tilted slightly and she considered his words on his project for a moment before speaking. "I'll look into that," she said, though she knew she'd drop some off at some point. She'd just have to consider everything very carefully. She was always rather cautious, and the fact that it was discreet was a definite plus in her book.

She stilled completely for a moment when he offered to spell it. She wet her lips after a second and then asked, "Could you show me the counter first? I'd hate to end up stuck, as lovely as this is," she said, lips quirking faintly. It took a lot for her anyomre to let anyone spell her, but he hadn't shown any sign of taking anything out on her so far, or suspecting exactly who she was, so she might consider it.

Dora nodded and took out her little purse, finding the money in its much larger depths and leaving him a significant tip above what he'd listed. It was the least she could do, especially given that he'd managed to make her smile on a day she hadn't expected to be able to summon up a smile.

"No obligations," he said and shrugged lightly. He knew the project wasn't for everyone, and pretty much nobody wanted to talk about it.

He wasn't quite sure what her pause was about, but nodded readily enough. "Sure. I'll do it on my own, show you it's removable and then re-do it," he said. He checked his hands for really wet paint and shuffled his wand out of his trouser pocket. He carefully spoke the spell aloud, being more careful with the wand movement as he tapped his forehead to end it. "You can tap any bit that's painted," he said, reaching for a sponge and damping it. He grabbed his mirror and carefully wiped off the tip of his nose, which would be easy enough to re-paint before the next client. "Taa daa," he said, wriggling his nose slightly at the itchy sensation. "You'll probably still need to scrub a bit, but it'll come off just fine." He shuffled for a second and found a quill and a scrap of parchment which he wrote the spell on for her.

He took her money with a quick thank you, making a note on his list of clients and shut the cash box again.

She watched him carefully with faintly narrowed eyes, concentrating as he did the spell. She nodded to show she'd gotten it. "All right. Simple enough," she said. It seemed like a variant of what she sometimes used for make-up charms and she could deal with that. "Sounds good to me. Go ahead, then." She purposefully folded her hands so her fingers wouldn't twitch. She rarely allowed anyone to cast spells on her who weren't, well, Rich, usually.

She gave him a quick smile once the transaction was done. "Thank you," she said with some measure of seriousness. Though there was a scream still bottled in her chest, right now she felt calmer and a little happier than she'd expected to be today.

Dean didn't often do spells on other people, especially not people he didn't know, so he took extra care. Carefully he intoned the spell non-verbally and traced his wand around the painted area of her face, wand several inches away. Sending the spell forward to complete he aimed just above one of her eyebrows. He knew the slight shimmery tickling sensation that accompanied the spell would last only a second or two as it searched out paint to bind to. "All done," he said smiling at her. Hopefully she was okay with that. He knew it had taken correctly. "Welcome to smudge-free face paint!" He realised there was probably a make-up version, but not being someone who wore make-up he'd never learned it.

"You're welcome," he replied with sincerity. "Hope the rest of your day goes well." Now he just needed to re-paint the tip of his nose before the next customer. He'd only really rubbed away a small patch of yellow and a couple of white lines though, it would be the work of a couple of moments.

"Thank you very much," she said, wiggling her nose to see how it felt. Not nearly as traumatizig as she'd thought it might be to have him cast it on her, perhaps because he seemed scrupulously good and she hadn't really thought he'd do something awful to her.

"And yours as well." She smiled at him one more time and waved her fingers at him and headed out to rejoin her friends.
