"Your work is good. You had the showing, right?" she said, almost offhand. "Yes. Some tasks free up your mind while others fill it. It depends on what you want. I prefer to simply keep busy most of the time." If she kept busy and didn't let her mind wander, she coped infinitely better than if she let herself dwell and think too much, as she'd done the last few days.

She shook her head slightly as she looked in the mirror. She pulled out the pin and let go of the spell at the same time, letting the green streaked locks tumble to frame the mask. She smiled, and this time it did reach her eyes, possibly the first time all day. "No, it looks great," she told him, voice sincere. "I'm glad I decided to have it done." If it made her happy for even a few minutes, well, then it was definitely worth it.

He was surprised to be reminded of the show, but pleased all the same. "Thank you, and yes I had a show with the others I share a building with at the end of last year. All the painters are taking at least one shift on the stall actually," he said. He knew the sign said that the artists would change, but that was in far smaller writing than that detailing the fact there was face painting available. He nodded his understanding of her preference, it was definitely one he'd been feeling himself lately, regardless of the time of year.

Dean couldn't help smiling when he saw her reaction to her finished face. Working on adults was far more intimidating than working on children. They tended to be harder to effectively please. "I'm glad you like it," he said with equal sincerity. "And it goes well with your hair, too."

"Do you think you'll do another?" she asked, not sure if she would attend even if he was. It wasn't because he was a bad artist, either; rather, he was too good, and she didn't know if she could handle the humiliation of another public breakdown.

"Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted, to match for the day. Glamours only go so far -- the paint will be easier to maintain for the day." Though admittedly she had ideas for Halloween glamours, but they were nebulous and she would let them percolate before pursuing them.

"Another show?" he asked, then shrugged and nodded. "Sure. I share a building with three other people and we do a show together about every eighteen months or two years. I know Cadmus has done a solo show before, and I think Braith did some with other friends too, although not for a while. That's, er, Cadmus Urqhart and Braith Whitehead. I have one or two things at a muggle coffee shop that has some wall space but I haven't done my own show yet. I'm not far past my apprenticeship," he said and shrugged again. Aside from Susan who firmly did NOT count he'd only had a few repeat clients.

He paused, considering her for a few moments before explaining quietly. "I am doing a bit of a project at the moment, collecting words that haunt people along with descriptions of locations they associate them with. I'm going to mix and match all of the submissions and create a patchwork painting from them. If you're interested there's an anonymous collection box over to the side of the stall and a note of the instructions." His lips twitched into an encouraging sort of smile as he gestured in the appropriate direction. It was intentionally out of his sight line and placed so it might look like someone submitting was just looking over the booth.

He nodded, not sure why she might want to hide for the day. It might mean she was well known or from the losing side, which sent a small clench through his stomach, but she'd been nothing but nice to him so he resolved not to make anything of it. "There's a spell I can do to stop it smudging if you like, but it won't end with a straight Finite," he offered. It was straightforward enough he could write the spell and explain the extra downwards flick.

He glanced briefly at the price list before naming his price, knocking off a couple of sickles from the price he should have charged because he'd enjoyed their conversation too, and she'd given him some artistic license which was far more fun than what even most of the nicest children could manage. Especially if they had pushy parents. It was only him making the loss anyway since they were all recording what they did to share the small profits.

Dora's head tilted slightly and she considered his words on his project for a moment before speaking. "I'll look into that," she said, though she knew she'd drop some off at some point. She'd just have to consider everything very carefully. She was always rather cautious, and the fact that it was discreet was a definite plus in her book.

She stilled completely for a moment when he offered to spell it. She wet her lips after a second and then asked, "Could you show me the counter first? I'd hate to end up stuck, as lovely as this is," she said, lips quirking faintly. It took a lot for her anyomre to let anyone spell her, but he hadn't shown any sign of taking anything out on her so far, or suspecting exactly who she was, so she might consider it.

Dora nodded and took out her little purse, finding the money in its much larger depths and leaving him a significant tip above what he'd listed. It was the least she could do, especially given that he'd managed to make her smile on a day she hadn't expected to be able to summon up a smile.

"No obligations," he said and shrugged lightly. He knew the project wasn't for everyone, and pretty much nobody wanted to talk about it.

He wasn't quite sure what her pause was about, but nodded readily enough. "Sure. I'll do it on my own, show you it's removable and then re-do it," he said. He checked his hands for really wet paint and shuffled his wand out of his trouser pocket. He carefully spoke the spell aloud, being more careful with the wand movement as he tapped his forehead to end it. "You can tap any bit that's painted," he said, reaching for a sponge and damping it. He grabbed his mirror and carefully wiped off the tip of his nose, which would be easy enough to re-paint before the next client. "Taa daa," he said, wriggling his nose slightly at the itchy sensation. "You'll probably still need to scrub a bit, but it'll come off just fine." He shuffled for a second and found a quill and a scrap of parchment which he wrote the spell on for her.

He took her money with a quick thank you, making a note on his list of clients and shut the cash box again.

She watched him carefully with faintly narrowed eyes, concentrating as he did the spell. She nodded to show she'd gotten it. "All right. Simple enough," she said. It seemed like a variant of what she sometimes used for make-up charms and she could deal with that. "Sounds good to me. Go ahead, then." She purposefully folded her hands so her fingers wouldn't twitch. She rarely allowed anyone to cast spells on her who weren't, well, Rich, usually.

She gave him a quick smile once the transaction was done. "Thank you," she said with some measure of seriousness. Though there was a scream still bottled in her chest, right now she felt calmer and a little happier than she'd expected to be today.

Dean didn't often do spells on other people, especially not people he didn't know, so he took extra care. Carefully he intoned the spell non-verbally and traced his wand around the painted area of her face, wand several inches away. Sending the spell forward to complete he aimed just above one of her eyebrows. He knew the slight shimmery tickling sensation that accompanied the spell would last only a second or two as it searched out paint to bind to. "All done," he said smiling at her. Hopefully she was okay with that. He knew it had taken correctly. "Welcome to smudge-free face paint!" He realised there was probably a make-up version, but not being someone who wore make-up he'd never learned it.

"You're welcome," he replied with sincerity. "Hope the rest of your day goes well." Now he just needed to re-paint the tip of his nose before the next customer. He'd only really rubbed away a small patch of yellow and a couple of white lines though, it would be the work of a couple of moments.

"Thank you very much," she said, wiggling her nose to see how it felt. Not nearly as traumatizig as she'd thought it might be to have him cast it on her, perhaps because he seemed scrupulously good and she hadn't really thought he'd do something awful to her.

"And yours as well." She smiled at him one more time and waved her fingers at him and headed out to rejoin her friends.
