Fabian stared at what remained of his twenty-eighth cup of coffee. He had made it through the first two days of Gideon's absence without touching the stuff, but now the counter was filled with dirty mugs. The cat was displeased, as it much enjoyed the counter space for lounging and as a general jumping-off point, and it twined itself around Fabian's legs, one of which was involuntarily jiggling up and down like an overexcited piston.

Having been awake for much too long, he had reached a state of exhaustion like never before. He had even tried to sleep, but something felt funny about a house without his brother in it. Although he didn't always see Gideon, he always knew he could reach him. He brought a hand up to his face and rubbed at his aching eyeballs, which were bloodshot from fatigue. His fingers trembled from the caffeine.

His heart nearly stopped when he heard the door open, and he was on his feet before he had even registered it. "Gideon?" His voice was too loud, and foreign to his ears.
