It was a dull afternoon by all accounts, but Rodolphus would have been lying to suggest he didn't prefer them that way. Warm, excitable afternoons brought with them curious children and dull shoppers seeking to wile away their time within the library's walls with no greater purpose that to plant sticky fingers upon his books and waste his time. He frowned into the pages of his text at the very idea while fiddling with a lighter - and a cigarette remained in his mouth as it had remained for the last three minutes, unlit and forgotten. Ten more minutes, he noted, a flicker of green absorbing the clock's impertinently stubborn hands, and though he wasn't nervous in the traditional sense of the word, there was something anticipatory about the whole affair that made him unpleasantly distractable.
In lieu of paying attention to his book, there was always Gideon Prewett to scowl at; Rodolphus didn't know what he'd been thinking when he hired the wretch. It wasn't that he was a bad sort, particularly - his family name was good, even if his ridiculous sister had married into a gaggle of blood traitors - but there was something he didn't like. Some hunch he got, and it annoyed him to no end both that he had a hunch and that he was paying attention to it. That latter annoyance was probably what kept Gideon in his service, because if Rodolphus was going to play slave to anything, it wouldn't be a damned hunch. Women got hunches, he didn't.
"We're going to move Caravuchi upstairs." His low voice broke the silence, and he pointed with his lighter-hand toward the section of books to Gideon's right.
