RP Thread - Hogsmeade Attack
 2 February Attack
parties involved
death eaters/order/ministry/media

2 February; it's been a quiet, almost dull Saturday. Hogwarts students were through the weekend before and their wild excitment leaves a peaceful town its wake. Shoppers shop, drunks drink, and clerks clerk with a cheerful sort of idleness. It is unfortunate that upon this day, an historical message will be sent to those who would seek to oppose the purist agenda: we will be heard.

Today marks the first attack in the history of the war upon wizarding civilians.

Today marks the true beginning of fear and terror in wizarding Britain.

I. The Beginning; an explosion and murder

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, civilians

[4.30 pm] Without warning, a blue explosion will shake Hogsmeade; in a flight of fancy, civilians may think the ghost of the shrieking shack has finally made his escape, but no - it is not the dead we must worry about but the living. Soon after the explosion rips open the Ministry's magistrate office, cloaked figures will appear from the smoke, and it is more than obvious they have no interest in giving terms. They will set upon the magistrate; murder and destruction will quickly follow.

Your part to play:

  • Bellatrix, Alecto, and Regulus should coordinate their efforts in this attack;
  • Civilians, if played, may feel free to run and scream and be afraid;
  • Order members, if present, should notify the organization and begin to move in.

II. The Action; an explosion and battle

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, Order of the Phoenix

[4.45 pm] As civilians run amok and abandon their houses to gawk at the unbelievable action, another explosion tears apart a section of Screechsnap Avenue and a nearby (empty) business. Several people are injured and the explosion and those at the center of the explosion are killed. The order of the phoenix arrives and sets upon the destructive Death Eaters, and a violent battle ensues between the opposing forces. One civilian is caught in the cross-fire and killed.

Your part to play:

  • Death eaters will continue to wreak havoc and battle the Order;
  • Order members will arrive and do battle against the DEs. Those Order members attached to the ministry should also notify Rufus Scrimgeour of what is going on;
  • Aurors will receive the news and coordinate rapidly via journals

III. The Resolution; reinforcements and retreat

Involved parties: Death eaters, Order of the Phoenix, Ministry

[5.00 pm] Aurors appear on the scene and begin kicking ass alongside their illegal vigilante friends (who have enough brains to disappear or pretend they were there by happenstance lest their identities become completely public knowledge). Death Eaters, having accomplished what they'd desired to accomplish and having no interest in fighting a large number of do-gooders, disapparate back into the blue mist of their destruction.

Your part to play:

  • Death Eaters should fight the good fight and then get the heck out of dodge;
  • Order members should make some efforts not to make it obvious they are part of a secret organization
  • Aurors should do their battle and keep a somewhat blind eye to the Order, if it is in their disposition to do so .

IV. The Epilogue; investigations and answers

Involved parties: Ministry

[5.15 pm] Civilians are angry, scared, and there is death and destruction everywhere. The aurors are one part of several departments that is involved in investigation and cleanup. It's obvious that the Death Eaters were responsible for this mess but how and why? How can it be prevented again and what can the Auror department offer to the public in way of reassurance?

Your part to play:

  • Aurors should investigate, cleanup, take notes, and attempt to be diplomatic

V. Supplements;

Hogsmeade attack locations:

Damage and casualties:

  • 1 house destroyed;
  • 4 houses, 1 empty business lot, and the magistrate's office damaged;
  • sixteen injured (in explosions and crossfire);
  • five dead (including the magistrate);
  • more TBA (feel free to offer up names, relatives, etc)

VI. Procedure;

  • Timestamp your journal entries that have to do with this plotline
  • Reply to the appropriate thread
  • Coordinate your efforts with others via AIM
  • Ask questions from your mods if you haven't a clue what's going on or how to get involved
  • Have fun :)

In an instant, the peace and tranquility of the humble Wizarding village was mercilessly shattered. Screams of terror accompanied the magnificent blue explosion that rocked the town's edge, ripping away the wall that shielded the occupants of the local magistrate's office from the wrath of the hooded figures. The few civilians unfortunate enough to inhabit the street at the time swiftly scattered in a panic, rendering the scarcely populated outskirts all but abandoned. Only the magistrate and his aides remained, so startled by their confusion that they failed to flee before the Death Eaters emerged from the ominous blue smoke. In their inaction, they condemned themselves to be slaughtered by the faceless figures that crept ever closer, swathed in billowing black robes that cruelly denied them even the small mercy of knowing whose precisely hands they would die at.

The haze of destruction obscured the precise number of the Death Eaters who stood poised to attack, but one figure was alarmingly distinct from the rest. Perhaps it was the short burst of elated laughter than emanated from beyond her mask, or perhaps it was the eerie calm that surrounded her as she stepped further from the pack, her wand at the ready. Most of all, it was the dagger that glinted silver in the hollow February sun, its jagged edge ruthlessly dispelling the few remaining hopes that they might escape alive.

It was a deafening, ghastly sort of noise - explosions and laughter entwined into one high pitched whine deep in the ears that made speaking, hearing, thinking all but impossible. The building was in ruins and there was already blood on the floor, on the walls, rubble mixed with people mixed with paperwork and shiny awards that were now dull with filth and smoke. He was too stunned to do anything but stand behind his desk, face rent with shrapnol and confusion and hands still gripping the quill and parchment he'd been so dutifully writing upon.

Bilsby stood and watched as the smoke exhaled across the opening, stupefied by the figures approaching. He hadn't the sense to scream at his employees, to do the cowardly thing and run. He just stood while his underlings dragged each other from the floor and shoved themselves through the fireplace, which coughed green flames and trembled in the explosion's aftermath.

They came closer, and still he stood, dark green ink dripping onto his desk and trousers as one last secretary screamed his name from where she stood by the fire, waiting until the last minute, the very last second before abandoning her post. The side of the roof collapsed shortly after - a symphony of destruction that startled him - though he could barely hear anything but that persistent, horrible whine.

And still. And still. He stood.

A nervous thrill shot through Regulus as the roof collapsed, his cousin's haunting laughter still ringing in the air -- or at least in his mind. The rapid thump, thump, thump of his heart mingled with the crashing commotion so solidly that he could not help but wonder if it was audible.

Something like anticipation tingled out to the tips of his fingers as he gripped his wand tightly at his side, and despite the shrouding smoke, he was certain his vision had never been quite so sharp. This was it: his first mission had begun. Shrouded safely in the billowing robes, hidden anonymously behind the skull-like mask, his eyes flicked between Bellatrix and the magistrate.

For a long moment, the dark witch was content to merely admire the startled magistrate. She did not admire him in the manner a normal person admired another human being, but rather the way a hound admired a red fox, appreciating its prey for the appetizing diversion it presented. The steps that carried her forward were as leisurely as they were deliberate, drawing the proceedings out for the sake of feeding off of the thrill of anticipation. Her air of nonchalance belied the precise nature of her initiative; her sheer speed and skill with a wand effectively precluded him from reconsidering his foolish presence and staging his escape, affording her the luxury of prolonging the tension until it reached a crimson crescendo.

With nary a word of warning, she slashed the dagger cleanly across the magistrate's throat, her eyes glittering black with sadistic merriment as the thin scarlet line bloomed bright upon white flesh, a deceptively slow progression toward an ultimately fatal demise. The presence of her youngest and most treasured cousin prompted Bellatrix to make an example out of the man, drawing his back taut against her chest as gloved fingers tangled in his hair and her lips brushed over his ear in mock tenderness. "Were I to leave you now in this very state, you might succeed in quelling the blood flow long enough for a mediwizard to arrive," She murmured whimsically, her disguise masking her thoughtful expression. Alas, were was the opportune word, for she soon wrenched his head back by the scalp and bared his throat to the crisp winter air, inhaling sharply as rivulets of blood poured generously from the wound.

Marlene wasn't normally one for guard duty. Keeping a watchful eye out for nothing in particular, waiting for an unidentified something to happen when there was no reason to expect it, was exhausting. And annoying. And boring. And a plethora of other adjectives that Marlene knew better than to gripe about, because it was necessary. There were plenty of other places that she could've been stationed (for example, she was pretty sure that poor Sturgis had gotten stuck on Mungo's duty), and it was likely that the worst she'd have to deal with that day was the masses of gooey-eyed couples holding hands and whispering vomit-inducing pet names at each other while making their way to Madam Puddifoot's, sucked into the Valentine's Day spirit two weeks too early.

It should have been the worst, at least. She'd been glancing through the window of Honeydukes, rolling her eyes in annoyance at the newly decorated reds and pinks that lined the aisles of sweets, when the ear-shattering blue blast erupted behind her, the force of the explosion knocking her off her feet. Glass shattered around her and the other window-shoppers as the smoke billowed away from the splintered Magistrate's office, the blast still ringing in her ear as Marlene jumped to her feet and readied her wand, suddenly thinking that maybe Sturgis had gotten the better end of the deal. The haze thinned, the hooded figures only stripped from the shadows for only a moment before Marlene was moving, running behind the shop and casting a patronus to alert the other members of the Order -- DEs attacking Hogsmeade. Get here NOW. -- before dashing back into the chaos of the scene, yelling for the screaming civilians to get out of there, to apparate home, to not stand around and gawk, for god's sake! Marlene wasn't sure why this was happening, why it was happening here and today, but only a moment's glance at the featureless outlines of the masked assailants assured her that they didn't want to find out the reasons.

The snapping sound from his Apparition was unfortunately unavoidable, but after he arrived, blooming into presence in an alley behind a popular Hogsmeade boutique, Frank moved quickly and quietly toward the epicenter of the chaos. He took ten seconds to scribble down an alarm for the rest of the Order, and five to cast a light camouflaging charm.

For the first five minutes, all he could do was direct traffic. With as much an attempt to disguise his position as possible, he used an amplifying spell to bestow as much order and urgency as possible on a confused and panicked crowd and to get them moving out. He went silent as soon as he feared he might give away his position, and moved toward the Magistrate's Office, using what environmental assets he had to stay invisible.

Having pulled away from the scene in the magistrate's office some time before, Regulus gained his footing in the attack itself. Gone was the queasiness, replaced with the sights and sounds and shoutings of utter chaos. He took on the task with fervor.

Circling back and coming upon a small, inconspicuous shop near the office, a movement caught his eye through the glass window. He paused. Upon closer examination he could see the quivering, huddled bodies of cowering civilians bunched in the corner, some looking up at him fearfully whilst others clenched their eyes closed as if to will him away and wish them to safety. Regulus could not recall if anyone had ever looked at him like that -- as if he was a force to be feared. Being a Black earned you instant respect (unless you were a blood traitor), but he had never demanded the same fearful respect some others in his family seemed to manage naturally. He wasn't a particularly imposing form, nor was his air typically one of intimidation.

However -- the thoughts were shaken from his mind when he realised he was still standing quite in the open with his back to the battle. While it seemed that the group within the shop grew more nervous with each second he stood before them, he did not want to risk being shot in the back with a stray (or aimed, for that matter) curse, so lifting his wand, he shot a blasting hex at the window, unsure if he was more satisfied with the sound of the shattering glass more so than the screaming that resulted, but he did not waste much time thinking on it. The chaos and destruction around him that would normally cause him anxiety now egged him on. The quiet, reserved boy who preferred silence over sound felt like a completely different person behind the mask, and as he climbed through the broken window, he told himself that was a good thing.

The sound of shattering glass had drawn Edgar Bones from the edges of the fight. Receiving orders to get into Hogsmeade as fast as he was able had been one thing, but trying to make sense of the chaos was quite another -- he'd only narrowly avoided a stray hex seconds after Apparating, but he'd managed to get his bearings and head into the village. Edgar tried not to look at the damage that had been caused, lest he anger himself unnecessarily, but it was impossible to shut out the screams and cries of the people -civilian and otherwise- who had found themselves worse off. But the glass smashing had drawn his attention, and he turned in time to see a dark figure climbing through it.

Edgar smiled. If whoever was passing through that window had wanted to corner themselves, then they'd gone and done an impressive job. He headed over, wand drawn to chest-height. Still, his sense of fair play couldn't be smothered, even here.

"Would you like a countdown before you get over here, or shall I just start blasting?" Edgar called, his harsh clipped tones carrying easily over the air.

Time had a way of both crawling and whisking by. The twenty minutes of mass panic since the initial eruption felt as though it'd been growing for hours, while benches and signposts were reduced to dust quicker than Marlene could blink an eye. She was sure that at some point other members of the Order had begun to arrive - she'd caught a flash of hair that she thought she recognized, a coat that could only possibly belong to one person - but couldn't pinpoint the whens and wheres of their arrival, nor was there time to worry about that. There were hexes traveling from all angles, screaming children who'd lost site of their parents in the rush, grey haired women who'd cast their wands and walking sticks aside in favour of attempting to dig their husbands out from under the charred rubble, refusing to leave their loved one's side, danger be damned.

Marlene wished there was more she could do beyond sending out defensive hexes and casting protective shield charms at those unable to do so for themselves, knowing that bringing any unnecessary attention to herself beyond what she had to in attempts to keep safe would be dangerous not only for herself, but for the Order. Of course, she couldn't hold herself back from firing a particularly nasty stinging hex at one of the Death Eaters who was steadily approaching a little girl with brown braids whose mother, maybe sister, was laying unconscious in the snow a few meters away. Yelling at the girl to run (and oh, that she did, disappearing out of the fray and towards her house on Asphodel Avenue), Marlene took off in the other direction, knowing well enough that it wouldn't be smart to still be standing there when the Death Eater regathered his senses.

Severus moved around the side of a building, his wand in his hand. He wasn't one for showy attacks, but the Dark Lord seemed to enjoy them tremendously, and what was he to do except follow and try to make himself known to his leader. A young woman skittered nearby, screaming at his mask, and he turned throwing a stunning spell at her. She was a civilian, and he thought that he recognized her as a full blood from his days at Hogwarts.

He moved down the alley, out into the main street where screaming individuals and smoke from the original explosion were both rather thick. Ignoring a small boy, he aimed a hex at a full grown male wizard outside of Madam Puddifoots Tea Shop. Severus sneered slightly at the shop. He'd always hated the place for everything it had never offered him. He raised his wand and blasted the front glass out of the window sending hearts and lace scattering across the shop and bringing screams from inside. He moved away from it and stalked further down the street.

Fabian had been in his bedroom when the explosion in Screechsnap Square had happened. One moment, he had been pulling on socks, and the next, his sock drawer was eliminated by a chimney that he realised had been thrown from the roof of the townhouse next door. He had stood, shell-shocked, in the dust blowing in the now open air, and gaping at the hole in the side of his bedroom.

"What was that?" he bellowed, to no one in particular. He thought of calling for Gideon, but remembered that his brother would still be at the Lestrange Library. But where had the explosion come from? He peered out his window and realized that, indeed, the houses around him were damaged as well, but beyond them the town was intact, if full of people running. He rushed down the stairs without one of his socks and slipped on his shoes and cloak. He pulled out his wand, and, fearing the worst, cast a glamour charm upon himself.

His fears were realized once he got into town and saw several masked figures scurrying about. He saw one stalking down the lane and throwing curses, and responded by ducking behind a shop and firing a Stunning Spell. He peered around the corner to see if it had worked, keeping his wand up.

Alastor appeared at the scene of the crime along with several other Aurors, all with their wands drawn and ready. They'd apparated in the midst of chaos - people screaming and running for cover, the smell of smoke heavy in the air.

The corner of his lip curled with anger, looking in the directions where the two blasts had taken place, evident by the column of smoke rising high into the sky above the shops. When the call to 'spread out' was given, Alastor went down a nearby street, intent in finding somebody responsible for this damage and to bring them to justice.

Alecto would just about fit that bill, yes; she was standing at a corner, prying up cobblestones with a flick of her wand before sending them flying with a billow of her voluminous black sleeve. Targets of choice: anything that moved, but failing living and moving targets (most of whom had fled, the cowards) she was letting rip at the windows of nearby houses. One extra-hard fling toppled the chimney of the middle of an adorable row of townhouses. The next smashed a geranium-filled window box. Oh yes, Ms Carrow was having fun.

Glimpsing movement (fresh meat!) in the corner of her masked vision, she levitated another cobblestone quick-smart and whirled around, putting momentum into hurling it down the street like a slingshot.

"Goddamnsonofabitch," Moody growled, casting a Blasting Charm to deflect the stone before it even got close. It exploded upon impact, reducing the stone into rubble, flying in all directions. "Fucking Death Eater scum."

His next words were barked out loud. "Is that the best you can do, scum? Come on! Let's see how fucking tough you are against a real opponent!"

That said, he fired another Blasting Charm her way, for he could tell even under the flowing robes that his masked opponent was a woman.

Fuckin' hell. The place was already a mess before Gawain got there. Pandemonium. Soon as he'd seen Rufus' post, he'd dropped everything (except his journal, which was stuffed into his pocket) and apparated to Hogsmeade, wand drawn and ready. His orders were to organize the troops until Rufus got there, and damnit if there was one thing Gawain did well, it was his job.

He did his thing, barking orders and organizing the men (and women). When he got the message from Rufus, he sent some to do whatever he told them to, then the rest came with him to meet Rufus at the Hog's Head.

Rufus arrived shortly after five, having to clear his auror movements with the department (though he neglected to mention to them that he'd already sent out the troops before gaining clearance) - things were getting looser for the office, but it still felt like their every move was being hampered. Barty Crouch had ideas on how to fix that, but getting those to go through had been difficult. Rufus thought with a grim sense of irony that this very attack might prove the impetus for the MLE to finally get their heads out of their bums and take action on behalf of the auror office. They needed to have the freedom to just get out and do their jobs.

As he headed toward the Hog's Head, Rufus was reminded how lucky he was to have someone like Gawain on his team. He knew his partner would balk at some of the 'freedoms' that Rufus had in mind, but he was still a good man and did his job well - without reporting to their superiors that Rufus sometimes took advantage of opportunities that he wasn't exactly authorized to take.

"Gawain," he barked out, wand drawn as he dashed toward the other man, "how many've you spotted?" He could hear the destruction being rent upon the other side of the building, and it infuriated him.

"Five, so far," Gawain reported, still keeping his eyes peeled for more, just in case. "From the sounds of it, though, I'd say there's a least a dozen out there." Fuck he needed a cigarette. He also wanted to get out there and fight the motherfuckers. "Orders?"

Tired wasn't the half of it; Rufus snapped shut his journal and shoved it deep into his coat before trudging off toward the Hog's Head. Civilians were still hanging around the outskirts of the damage - he could see them in his periphery, lollygagging and gossiping as if that helped worth a damn. With every step, his eyes swept across the road, fingers clenching his wand with each random movement and flicker of light. He was getting twitchy - it was no good.

The minutes passed by and he stopped before the tavern, watching his breath on the still air and waiting, waiting for what seemed ages (but was only a few seconds) for the sharp crack that would herald Amelia's arrival. He didn't like that she came to the crime scenes. Didn't like it in the way that some chauvinistic streak deep down inside him thought it was malapropos, but he shelved that for practicality. Like it or not - and he did, secretly - Amelia was indispensable.

It had been a long 40 minutes, at the same time passing quickly. Light banter was all well and good, but she still intended on giving Moody a fairly large piece of her mind -- but later, when all was calm and they could breathe again without the stench of smoke and burning flesh filled their noses. Now, though, there was only time for Apparating and looking for Rufus, and pushing away the rush of relief that he was still alive that he'd be around for another day of taunting her.

Her bag and cloak had been close at hand from the moment she arrived at her desk, and it was but a moment to grab them both and then step away to Apparate to the Hog's Head. Immediately she frowned; she didn't particularly like this part of her job and Rufus knew it. He knew it, and also knew that she wouldn't ever refuse to go simply because he needed her there. The excuse that if she didn't do the paperwork in the first place was just a cover; the truth was, simply, that she went because he needed her.

Her Appearance was sudden, but was no cause for alarm. She was a familiar face to most, and so cut easily into the gathering darkness. "Rufus." He, at least, was easy to spot. "Coffee. And quills."

"Coffee?" If ever a grown man had perked it was Rufus, and he was perking fiercely, shoving his notebook in his mouth so he could keep his wand in one hand and take the coffee in the other; only too late did he realize his conundrum and attempt clumsily to get the notebook under his arm without endangering coffee, notebook, or wand. It was a bit ridiculous and he finally relented and mouthed off the notebook to Amelia (ignoring her wrinkled nose at the spit-dampened edges) and took a long hard gulp of coffee. It scalded him from the inside out, and it was exactly what he needed - the scalding - for it felt as though he'd been tainted by this destruction and cruelty. As much as he believed in the goodness of the ministry and the importance of blood mingling, dealing with the wreckage of muggle homes had always just been pitiable... depressing in its way... but always detached somehow.

This was not detached, but close to home in a way that made him ill inside, necessitating the scrubbing that boiling liquid provided, even if only a physical crutch for his distress. It worked, it was good enough, and for the moment it was a blissful relief from the chaos that surrounded them.

"Update me on the casualty situation."
