RP Thread - Hogsmeade Attack
 2 February Attack
parties involved
death eaters/order/ministry/media

2 February; it's been a quiet, almost dull Saturday. Hogwarts students were through the weekend before and their wild excitment leaves a peaceful town its wake. Shoppers shop, drunks drink, and clerks clerk with a cheerful sort of idleness. It is unfortunate that upon this day, an historical message will be sent to those who would seek to oppose the purist agenda: we will be heard.

Today marks the first attack in the history of the war upon wizarding civilians.

Today marks the true beginning of fear and terror in wizarding Britain.

I. The Beginning; an explosion and murder

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, civilians

[4.30 pm] Without warning, a blue explosion will shake Hogsmeade; in a flight of fancy, civilians may think the ghost of the shrieking shack has finally made his escape, but no - it is not the dead we must worry about but the living. Soon after the explosion rips open the Ministry's magistrate office, cloaked figures will appear from the smoke, and it is more than obvious they have no interest in giving terms. They will set upon the magistrate; murder and destruction will quickly follow.

Your part to play:

  • Bellatrix, Alecto, and Regulus should coordinate their efforts in this attack;
  • Civilians, if played, may feel free to run and scream and be afraid;
  • Order members, if present, should notify the organization and begin to move in.

II. The Action; an explosion and battle

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, Order of the Phoenix

[4.45 pm] As civilians run amok and abandon their houses to gawk at the unbelievable action, another explosion tears apart a section of Screechsnap Avenue and a nearby (empty) business. Several people are injured and the explosion and those at the center of the explosion are killed. The order of the phoenix arrives and sets upon the destructive Death Eaters, and a violent battle ensues between the opposing forces. One civilian is caught in the cross-fire and killed.

Your part to play:

  • Death eaters will continue to wreak havoc and battle the Order;
  • Order members will arrive and do battle against the DEs. Those Order members attached to the ministry should also notify Rufus Scrimgeour of what is going on;
  • Aurors will receive the news and coordinate rapidly via journals

III. The Resolution; reinforcements and retreat

Involved parties: Death eaters, Order of the Phoenix, Ministry

[5.00 pm] Aurors appear on the scene and begin kicking ass alongside their illegal vigilante friends (who have enough brains to disappear or pretend they were there by happenstance lest their identities become completely public knowledge). Death Eaters, having accomplished what they'd desired to accomplish and having no interest in fighting a large number of do-gooders, disapparate back into the blue mist of their destruction.

Your part to play:

  • Death Eaters should fight the good fight and then get the heck out of dodge;
  • Order members should make some efforts not to make it obvious they are part of a secret organization
  • Aurors should do their battle and keep a somewhat blind eye to the Order, if it is in their disposition to do so .

IV. The Epilogue; investigations and answers

Involved parties: Ministry

[5.15 pm] Civilians are angry, scared, and there is death and destruction everywhere. The aurors are one part of several departments that is involved in investigation and cleanup. It's obvious that the Death Eaters were responsible for this mess but how and why? How can it be prevented again and what can the Auror department offer to the public in way of reassurance?

Your part to play:

  • Aurors should investigate, cleanup, take notes, and attempt to be diplomatic

V. Supplements;

Hogsmeade attack locations:

Damage and casualties:

  • 1 house destroyed;
  • 4 houses, 1 empty business lot, and the magistrate's office damaged;
  • sixteen injured (in explosions and crossfire);
  • five dead (including the magistrate);
  • more TBA (feel free to offer up names, relatives, etc)

VI. Procedure;

  • Timestamp your journal entries that have to do with this plotline
  • Reply to the appropriate thread
  • Coordinate your efforts with others via AIM
  • Ask questions from your mods if you haven't a clue what's going on or how to get involved
  • Have fun :)

They walked in silence into the midst of the fray and Rufus looked, tight lipped, into the destruction. The house at dead center had been torn apart by rescue crews in search of bodies, which made their job easier in its way (but also, ultimately, more difficult). "Looks like..." his brow furrowed. "Hag design maybe. They used to make them out of Erumpent powder. Nasty stuff." He was rambling, but in its way it felt good and he knew Amelia wouldn't complain. He was just grateful not to have to write - it was bugger all annoying to pull out his glasses to write something down when he could see normal things just fine without them.

"Center building fully destroyed." (obviously) "Others probably left surivors." God damn it, how could these bastards kill their own kind? It was a selfish thought and a more rational one reminded him that muggleborns and the like were not their kind... for which Rufus thought muggleborns should be grateful. With this thought came another. "See who lived in this flat and these surrounders. Check their blood status and loyalties. I want to know why this building was targeted when they could have made a bigger impact over there."

Rufus could use a dictaquill, but there was a certain harshness in that went against what every seemed to want -- just someone there. Didn't matter if the other talked or not. Just another presence to prove that sanity existed. Amelia served that purpose right now. So she made her notes, frowning as her memory was tickled. "Saw a report... yesterday I think. Stash of explosives found in Gloucester at a house reportedly belonging to a hag. New recipe for the explosives, it said. I'll have someone get samples to be tested."

She stayed at his elbow (not of his wand arm; that mistake had been made already), writing her notes, some for him and some for herself. "I'll have that for you by noon tomorrow, with a complete casualty report. I'll make sure to swing it so that the press conference is around two."

There was something comforting about having her there with him - as comforting as another human being could be when there was destruction and panic all around them. It was dying down now, he reminded himself - but it didn't negate the fact that out there. Out there, it would never die down. In the homes of purists and in the back alleys of Knockturn and the countrysides, there were people plotting death and destruction. It made him feel almost helpless, and that made him feel angry, and he pushed those useless emotions aside to focus on the situation at hand. Amelia was a good lass - prompt and on the ball. He remembered the report only vaguely. Probably buried under his heaps of paper by now.

"Good. We'll get on that. Meanwhile, I don't know that there's much left here to do. Everything's been shifted in the rescue attempt. We might as well rejoin Moody and find a way to keep this from happening again."

"I'll set a team to go through this, then," Amelia told him, tucking her notebook back into the satchel she carried with her. She nodded, glancing around the street. "Where's Moody, then?"

All of her thoughts she kept tucked away, to share not with him but with Edgar. Perhaps it wasn't fair to burden her brother with this, but it was the way it had been since their childhood. "If we can get everyone in one place it'll be easier to get a full report."

But he knew that. It was, however, a gentle reminder that he didn't have to seek them all out one by one.

"Eastern quarter," he murmured mindlessly, eyes still darting around for signs - for evidence of something more than the blatantly obvious. But there was nothing in this wreckage to give hint as to why one man would slaughter another - no motives, no justification. He knew their reasoning (he thought he knew their reasoning) but it wasn't here. There was no ultimatum, no warning, no ulterior political message. Just a brazen show of power designed to send a message of terror.

With a growl, Rufus sent a bit of rubble flying in front of them; it was a swift, sharp kick that encapsulated every raw, negative emotion but released nothing. He was so sick of this damned war. There needed to be more action. More, more, more. They wouldn't let him do his job and yet they complained about his job not being done. It was maddening.

He was glad, for the moment, that Amelia was speaking, for he could not - and with a brusque nod, they were off again toward the Hog's head, ready to meet their compatriots and get this damned mess sorted once and for all.
