RP Thread - Hogsmeade Attack
 2 February Attack
parties involved
death eaters/order/ministry/media

2 February; it's been a quiet, almost dull Saturday. Hogwarts students were through the weekend before and their wild excitment leaves a peaceful town its wake. Shoppers shop, drunks drink, and clerks clerk with a cheerful sort of idleness. It is unfortunate that upon this day, an historical message will be sent to those who would seek to oppose the purist agenda: we will be heard.

Today marks the first attack in the history of the war upon wizarding civilians.

Today marks the true beginning of fear and terror in wizarding Britain.

I. The Beginning; an explosion and murder

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, civilians

[4.30 pm] Without warning, a blue explosion will shake Hogsmeade; in a flight of fancy, civilians may think the ghost of the shrieking shack has finally made his escape, but no - it is not the dead we must worry about but the living. Soon after the explosion rips open the Ministry's magistrate office, cloaked figures will appear from the smoke, and it is more than obvious they have no interest in giving terms. They will set upon the magistrate; murder and destruction will quickly follow.

Your part to play:

  • Bellatrix, Alecto, and Regulus should coordinate their efforts in this attack;
  • Civilians, if played, may feel free to run and scream and be afraid;
  • Order members, if present, should notify the organization and begin to move in.

II. The Action; an explosion and battle

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, Order of the Phoenix

[4.45 pm] As civilians run amok and abandon their houses to gawk at the unbelievable action, another explosion tears apart a section of Screechsnap Avenue and a nearby (empty) business. Several people are injured and the explosion and those at the center of the explosion are killed. The order of the phoenix arrives and sets upon the destructive Death Eaters, and a violent battle ensues between the opposing forces. One civilian is caught in the cross-fire and killed.

Your part to play:

  • Death eaters will continue to wreak havoc and battle the Order;
  • Order members will arrive and do battle against the DEs. Those Order members attached to the ministry should also notify Rufus Scrimgeour of what is going on;
  • Aurors will receive the news and coordinate rapidly via journals

III. The Resolution; reinforcements and retreat

Involved parties: Death eaters, Order of the Phoenix, Ministry

[5.00 pm] Aurors appear on the scene and begin kicking ass alongside their illegal vigilante friends (who have enough brains to disappear or pretend they were there by happenstance lest their identities become completely public knowledge). Death Eaters, having accomplished what they'd desired to accomplish and having no interest in fighting a large number of do-gooders, disapparate back into the blue mist of their destruction.

Your part to play:

  • Death Eaters should fight the good fight and then get the heck out of dodge;
  • Order members should make some efforts not to make it obvious they are part of a secret organization
  • Aurors should do their battle and keep a somewhat blind eye to the Order, if it is in their disposition to do so .

IV. The Epilogue; investigations and answers

Involved parties: Ministry

[5.15 pm] Civilians are angry, scared, and there is death and destruction everywhere. The aurors are one part of several departments that is involved in investigation and cleanup. It's obvious that the Death Eaters were responsible for this mess but how and why? How can it be prevented again and what can the Auror department offer to the public in way of reassurance?

Your part to play:

  • Aurors should investigate, cleanup, take notes, and attempt to be diplomatic

V. Supplements;

Hogsmeade attack locations:

Damage and casualties:

  • 1 house destroyed;
  • 4 houses, 1 empty business lot, and the magistrate's office damaged;
  • sixteen injured (in explosions and crossfire);
  • five dead (including the magistrate);
  • more TBA (feel free to offer up names, relatives, etc)

VI. Procedure;

  • Timestamp your journal entries that have to do with this plotline
  • Reply to the appropriate thread
  • Coordinate your efforts with others via AIM
  • Ask questions from your mods if you haven't a clue what's going on or how to get involved
  • Have fun :)

Fabian had been in his bedroom when the explosion in Screechsnap Square had happened. One moment, he had been pulling on socks, and the next, his sock drawer was eliminated by a chimney that he realised had been thrown from the roof of the townhouse next door. He had stood, shell-shocked, in the dust blowing in the now open air, and gaping at the hole in the side of his bedroom.

"What was that?" he bellowed, to no one in particular. He thought of calling for Gideon, but remembered that his brother would still be at the Lestrange Library. But where had the explosion come from? He peered out his window and realized that, indeed, the houses around him were damaged as well, but beyond them the town was intact, if full of people running. He rushed down the stairs without one of his socks and slipped on his shoes and cloak. He pulled out his wand, and, fearing the worst, cast a glamour charm upon himself.

His fears were realized once he got into town and saw several masked figures scurrying about. He saw one stalking down the lane and throwing curses, and responded by ducking behind a shop and firing a Stunning Spell. He peered around the corner to see if it had worked, keeping his wand up.

Under normal circumstances, Marlene would've echoed that annoyance for Madam Puddifoots Teashop with all the passion in her heart, the decor on its own more than enough to convince anyone who wasn't blind that a cupid had exploded in there. Watching as the teashop's front window erupted in a shower of glass and pink taffeta hit Marlene harder than she would ever admit, things beginning to feel extremely real with the attack on the consistent eyesore.

Thoughts of the building quickly turned to thoughts of the shop's patrons, people whom Marlene had earlier mocked for their nauseating affection for each other, now huddled together under lace covered tables, terrified that they wouldn't see tomorrow. The man... or woman... the Death Eater who'd been responsible for the destruction kept moving, and Marlene made a mental note to come back to Madam Puddifoots later to make sure no one inside had been killed in the blast. For now, she decided to continue looking as panicked as the other citizens of Hogsmeade, playing the role of a frightened civilian (a role that didn't take much acting in this situation), while keeping after the Death Eater in question and trying to think of a way to stop him from doing anything more before he reached the residential section of the village.

Severus could feel the spell as it flew past his robes just missing him. He turned, throwing an immediate hex in the direction from where he thought the spell had probably originated before he even took his bearings.

Smoke in the air from the explosion made it difficult to see, but he was pretty certain he'd made out a figure looking around the edge of a shoppe.

He threw another hex in the direction before moving off, quickly, towards the residential areas. His job was to terrify as many people as possible and as it didn't seem that had been anyone with any real authority, he wasn't as concerned about the spell as he might otherwise have been. A normal individual wouldn't follow after someone who was going to hex them, which left only fools, and Severus was capable of dealing with fools.

He blasted another window with his wand, mostly for the show of the entire thing. What he was hoping to find was someone who might make a difference to the agenda and to the Dark Lord. Someone that if he were to capture, injure, or kill, would make the Dark Lord notice him.

Fabian ducked the hex fired at him, though he felt it singing the edge of his hair. He fairly prowled after his assailant. Again, he hid himself with the edge of a destroyed building, which he realized quickly was the magistrate's office. Alarmed, he peered past the rubble and made out destroyed desks, and paper everywhere, but most importantly, a body with its throat slit open. He contained his nausea and looked away again.

He fired off another whispered "Stupefy!" followed by a spell to bind the Death Eater. He wasn't expecting either of them to hit, unless this Death Eater was rather stupid, but he wanted to keep him (or her!) from going into the residential area.

Marlene would have looked off her nut to the casual observer if this had been an ordinary afternoon in Hogsmeade, ducking under benches, dashing behind crumbling walls, looking like a grown woman playing a childhood spying game. Her complete attention was focused on making sure she didn't lose site of the Death Eater she was following (stalking after would have been a more appropriate term, if she didn't refuse to accept the negative connotation that accompanied the word), while hoping he would continue focusing his destruction on real estate, rather than people. Maybe in the end this could be used as a pisspoor excuse for the shop owners of Hogsmeade to conduct some much needed renovation on their buildings.

But then the Death Eater was having spells shot at him for once, coming from a building on the other side of the road from Marlene's current hiding place (crouched behind the hedges lining one of the stores closest to the residential area. His attention seemed to temporarily be focused on his shrouded attempted assailant, which Marlene took as the perfect opportunity to shoot an Incarcerous spell from her angle as (unknown to her) Fabian shot the same spell from his hiding place. She didn't have a chance to see if the binding spell had worked, as she'd ducked back down behind the hedges seconds before the windowpane behind her shattered, shards of glass snowing down around her. The exploding window thing was getting really old really fast, but if that was what kept the Death Eaters from murdering innocent people while having their "fun," Marlene was fine with them continuing on as they had been.

Severus ducked the first of the binding spells, at the same time stepping right into the second one. He was furious as the ropes started wrapping themselves around his ankles and legs and he snarled the counter curse. Legs cleared, he turned, sending a confringo towards the building where he'd seen the second hex coming from. He took shelter behind the nearby shop, looking for another target to hex. He was certain that the Aurors wouldn't have made it yet, so these had to be vigilantes - random townspeople who thought they could trip up with a simple Incarcerous hex.

Thinking he saw movement, he sent a conjunctivitis hex towards where the first hex might have originated. He stuck his head out to see if the hex had hit a target.

Fabian had dared to look out further when he saw that the Death Eater had been caught in the Incarcerous spell, but he soon saw very little after the man (at least, he assumed it was a man from the voice) threw a curse in his direction. He dropped to the ground, his wand falling freely as his hands went immediately to his eyes, which burned with a heat he'd never felt before. His pained utterance was enough to let anyone know he was down at least for the moment.

Shaking and scrambling to find his wand with one hand, Fabian forced open one eye to realize he could barely see at all. Realizing he could no longer pursue the Death Eater, he instead crawled out of sight of the man (or, he hoped it was out of sight), hoping to run into the back entrance of the Hog's Head to get Aberforth's assistance.

The hedge directly to Marlene's left went up in flames for an immediate instant before seeming to vaporize, bits of ash and bark and leaf showering the spell-charred ground, the brick wall behind it burnt and cracked by the hex. Marlene let out a short scream after the spell's initial contact, which she immediately stifled and silently cursed herself for yelling out like that. True, any screaming she might have done was likely lost in the sound of the blast, but that was not the point.

Knowing that this probably wasn't the best place to continue hiding, (considering that had she been squatting down three feet closer to the building's door, that hedge would have been her,) Marlene peeked around the... well, the new side of the bushes, seeing as how it was right there to see if either of the Incarcerous spells had hit. Whether it had or not, the Death Eater was up and hexing things again, which wasn't what Marlene wanted to see. If he wasn't going to stay still long enough for any binding curse to work, maybe it would prove effective to go at things the other way. Marlene aimed a jelly-legs curse at the Death Eater, and without waiting to see if it made contact, booked it from out behind the hedges to hide behind the wall of the building.

Severus threw a couple of simple spells towards the movement and then he turned quickly down another alleyway continuing towards the center of the village. The fighting had slowed him down, much to his dismay, and it wouldn't be much longer for certain before the Aurors would show up.
