RP Thread - Hogsmeade Attack
 2 February Attack
parties involved
death eaters/order/ministry/media

2 February; it's been a quiet, almost dull Saturday. Hogwarts students were through the weekend before and their wild excitment leaves a peaceful town its wake. Shoppers shop, drunks drink, and clerks clerk with a cheerful sort of idleness. It is unfortunate that upon this day, an historical message will be sent to those who would seek to oppose the purist agenda: we will be heard.

Today marks the first attack in the history of the war upon wizarding civilians.

Today marks the true beginning of fear and terror in wizarding Britain.

I. The Beginning; an explosion and murder

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, civilians

[4.30 pm] Without warning, a blue explosion will shake Hogsmeade; in a flight of fancy, civilians may think the ghost of the shrieking shack has finally made his escape, but no - it is not the dead we must worry about but the living. Soon after the explosion rips open the Ministry's magistrate office, cloaked figures will appear from the smoke, and it is more than obvious they have no interest in giving terms. They will set upon the magistrate; murder and destruction will quickly follow.

Your part to play:

  • Bellatrix, Alecto, and Regulus should coordinate their efforts in this attack;
  • Civilians, if played, may feel free to run and scream and be afraid;
  • Order members, if present, should notify the organization and begin to move in.

II. The Action; an explosion and battle

Involved parties:
Death Eaters, Order of the Phoenix

[4.45 pm] As civilians run amok and abandon their houses to gawk at the unbelievable action, another explosion tears apart a section of Screechsnap Avenue and a nearby (empty) business. Several people are injured and the explosion and those at the center of the explosion are killed. The order of the phoenix arrives and sets upon the destructive Death Eaters, and a violent battle ensues between the opposing forces. One civilian is caught in the cross-fire and killed.

Your part to play:

  • Death eaters will continue to wreak havoc and battle the Order;
  • Order members will arrive and do battle against the DEs. Those Order members attached to the ministry should also notify Rufus Scrimgeour of what is going on;
  • Aurors will receive the news and coordinate rapidly via journals

III. The Resolution; reinforcements and retreat

Involved parties: Death eaters, Order of the Phoenix, Ministry

[5.00 pm] Aurors appear on the scene and begin kicking ass alongside their illegal vigilante friends (who have enough brains to disappear or pretend they were there by happenstance lest their identities become completely public knowledge). Death Eaters, having accomplished what they'd desired to accomplish and having no interest in fighting a large number of do-gooders, disapparate back into the blue mist of their destruction.

Your part to play:

  • Death Eaters should fight the good fight and then get the heck out of dodge;
  • Order members should make some efforts not to make it obvious they are part of a secret organization
  • Aurors should do their battle and keep a somewhat blind eye to the Order, if it is in their disposition to do so .

IV. The Epilogue; investigations and answers

Involved parties: Ministry

[5.15 pm] Civilians are angry, scared, and there is death and destruction everywhere. The aurors are one part of several departments that is involved in investigation and cleanup. It's obvious that the Death Eaters were responsible for this mess but how and why? How can it be prevented again and what can the Auror department offer to the public in way of reassurance?

Your part to play:

  • Aurors should investigate, cleanup, take notes, and attempt to be diplomatic

V. Supplements;

Hogsmeade attack locations:

Damage and casualties:

  • 1 house destroyed;
  • 4 houses, 1 empty business lot, and the magistrate's office damaged;
  • sixteen injured (in explosions and crossfire);
  • five dead (including the magistrate);
  • more TBA (feel free to offer up names, relatives, etc)

VI. Procedure;

  • Timestamp your journal entries that have to do with this plotline
  • Reply to the appropriate thread
  • Coordinate your efforts with others via AIM
  • Ask questions from your mods if you haven't a clue what's going on or how to get involved
  • Have fun :)

"Of course," he automatically replied, raising his wand to his brow in salute before he gave his attention to Edgar again. The man's attitude rankled him. He snarled beneath his mask, an Unforgiveable on the tip of his tongue.

" ... I suggest that you back away most carefully and start evacuating people before I take great pleasure in making your skin fry."

Scarcely managing a Shield Charm in time, Regulus avoided the ropes and snapped back to attention; his focus was once again on the enemy, and the insult of both Edgar's patronizing words and his throw-away binding attack only managed to incense Regulus even more. He was not going to spend his first mission tied up, and it seemed that Bones was just a little more cocky than Regulus could settle for. He was a Black, and he was not going to mess this one up.

Deftly (and with far more grace than he had managed since Edgar had appeared on the scene) Regulus moved to the other side of Edgar, slightly off center so as to not complicate anything Evan would cast opposite of him. Without wasting time -- a mistake he had already made more times than he would have liked -- he shot the same rope-binding hex back at Edgar, waiting to see if it would connect as the beginnings of a snarl formed on his face.

"If you'd care to try, scum, I'll make sure we get you one of the nicer cells in Azkaban." If they'd planned on flanking him from the start, they'd done a masterful job at it. He'd thought the pair were opportunists, happening over a lone Auror and hoping to make the best of it, but an unpleasant suspicion crept through his mind as he realised Regulus was now behind him. Had everything, from the breaking glass onwards, been a ploy to get him alone and surrounded? It looked like it, but a situation like this was hardly going to unnerve Edgar -- he'd faced worse, and come out of it on top. It was all a matter of keeping his head, and not letting either of them take the upper hand. "Nice views of the sea, en-suite hole in the floor, Dementor service right to your room..."

Regulus' attack came as a small surprise to the Auror who, with his wand still pointed at the other wizard -the wizard who seemed more of a threat, at least- stood little chance of actually deflecting the binding curse. Caught in a difficult position, he did what any good fighter would have done: he improvised shamelessly. Edgar jerked his head back, his hat flung out behind him to make contact with those ropes before they came within range of his body. They coiled around his hat, crushing it out of any kind of usable shape but leaving him free - and gave him enough time to shift subtly out of the way. Regulus was still behind him, still in a good position, but now Edgar could see him from the corner of his eye, and stood more of a chance alone.

"Longbottom!" Edgar's sharp, annoyed call cut through the cool air, over towards the last place he remembered Frank being. "If you're not too busy, we need a fourth person for bridge!" He aimed a Stunning spell at the taller Death Eater, content to hold back on the nastier curses for a time: unnecessarily antagonising two Death Eaters when he had no backup was not a recipe for staying alive.

Edgar's shout was unmistakable when it reached Frank, despite the fact that he was a bit distracted with a duel of his own. The mention of bridge, however, completely nonsensical to anyone that didn't know Bones, threw his opponent just vaguely--enough so that Frank's favorite double hex--Stupefy and a binding curse--tied him up about as neatly as a Christmas ham. He levitated the offender out of sight so that his comrades would not find him and release him, and then promptly Apparated the 100 yards over to Edgar, cracking into view not ten feet behind Rosier.

Frank wasn't one for much chatter, in a duel. He pointed his wand silently, and then shouted.

"Stupefy!"

Thus distracted by Regulus's misfired Curse and Bones's inane banter, Evan found that he could not turn and shield himself. It was too late ... he was out-manouvered by Longbottom.

The force of the curse sent him sprawling a few feet back into the rubble, shards of glass pricking at his hands until he shook out the fuzz from his mind and regained his feet. He was tired of playing small-time with these Aurors who obviously meant business. He wanted to triumph over them.

"Crucio!" he shouted, pointing his wand at Longbottom's lanky frame. His snarl turned on Bones. "Piss off, yeah? Crucio!"

Edgar grinned, despite his attempted professionalism. With a flick of his wand, he conjured another (rather stronger, admittedly) shield charm to deflect the curses, but now that they were getting into the Unforgivables then he could respond more forcefully. If he weren't as good and honorable a man as he was, then Edgar might have been tempted to fire something similar back at the man (after all, who would notice a stray Cruciatus?), but his irritating sense of integrity held him back.

"Take the little one," he said to Frank, as though the pair were doing nothing more than choosing a date for the evening. "I'll deal with tall, dark and wand-happy here. There'll be no pissing off just yet, fella."

He looked back towards Evan, obvious contempt on his features. A flick of his wand, and a jet of red light shot outwards -- A simple Stinging Hex, but it could hurt like hell if it was combined with a boot to the face or similar. There was a reason, after all, why the Aurors had been taught to fight without wands.

Regulus bristled as Bones brushed him off yet again, but he held his tongue, determined to remain poised. Instead he turned the majority of his attention to the second man who had arrived on the scene. Lifting his wand -- and sparing only the briefest of glances to Edgar -- Regulus took a step back and shot an immobilizing spell toward Frank.

Frank had to duck and roll out of the path of the first Crucio blast, but he'd regained his feet in time to put up a proper shield for the second. Unforgivables, honestly. Trite, irritating, and punishable by life in Azkaban.

There was something rather funny about all this, Frank thought in the detached way he had when in mid-battle (rather like he had a spectre of himself floating above and observing things with a bit of a sardonic twist, and writing every little quirk down for him to review later). He didn't protest the opponent switch, as there wasn't time to debate things like this mid-battle. Still, Frank would have liked a shot back at the man trying to put him the throes of back-breaking pain.

The immobilizing spell wasn't exactly a surprise, but he gave the kid credit for at least having a bit of integrity. All he had to do was to re-strengthen his shield charm, however, and to move closer to the smaller Death Eater after the immobilizing attack had been shunted away.

"What are you doing, here? Do you enjoy torturing people? Killing them?" Frank gestured to the shop without taking his eyes off Regulus, although the boy's identity was still a mystery to the tall Auror. Quickly changing his gesture into a spell, Frank sent a pair at Regulus--

"Locomotor Mortis" - "Impedimentia!"

"Well, you know -- we all have our hobbies," Regulus quipped evenly without looking away from Frank.

Taken off guard by the sudden switch to a spell, Regulus only managed a weak Shield Charm, barely holding off the first spell and quite easily falling prey to the second. Knocked roughly to the ground, Regulus was forced to take one moment longer than he would have liked to recover and hop to his feet once again. How aggravating.

"Incendio," Regulus cast back with a hint of irritation in his voice, shooting the fire toward Frank.

Frank felt like rolling his eyes (but then, he wasn't the sort to roll his eyes, much less blink during a duel); at least Edgar's witticisms were entertaining. "Murder is your hobby?"

The Incendio spell caught him a bit off-guard, but the slowness of the caster left him just enough time to sidestep it. The shoulder of his jacket, while it did not ignite, was singed through at the shoulder.

Quite finished talking, Frank turned sideways to make himself less of a target and began firing a series of spells in rapid succession at the small DE--dueling was his forte, after all. It was obvious that the person behind the mask was inexperienced, and Frank couldn't help thinking that, perhaps, the boy had been pressured into it, brainwashed like the rest of the lot of them. Maybe there was rehabilitating him yet.

"Confundus! Stupefy! Petrificus Totalus!"

Hit by the first jinx, Regulus found himself suddenly and horribly perplexed, barely dodging the following two attacks by mere reflex. The chaos around him seemed to amplify in confusion; he stumbled backward a step and caught sight of his opponent, unable to make enough sense of the matter to feel at all comfortable sticking around.

When his eyes once again found the shop and the people inside, he did the first thing that came to mind and shot another powerful blasting hex at the roof in the hope that it would distract the older man long enough for Regulus to get away.

The kid was done. Frank was all set to stun and bind him when Regulus stumbled out of position and threw a desperate blasting curse at the roof of the already-damaged shop.

He didn't even have time to whisper the 'Christ' that forced its way to his lips before the ceiling started to fall on the people below, and he was firing off three or four different supporting, stitching, and levitating charms without taking a moment to breathe. The massive blocks of stone making up the roof groaned as if alive, but they stayed put. For the moment.

Frank bellowed at the citizens hiding within to run, and, after a moment to recover their wits, run they did. And, as holding up the roof of an entire building is not something one man typically undertakes on his own, Frank lifted his strained enchantments the moment the last child was pulled from the rubble. Even as the roar of the crash was still ripping into the air from behind him, Frank spun, looking madly for the small Death Eater.

Resisting the urge to turn back and watch, Regulus bolted down the streets of Hogsmeade, unable to figure out what to do. Now that his automatic reactions had carried themselves out, he was left with decisions to make and not the sense to make them; when the Confundus Charm finally began to wear off (it had hit him rather hard) he was able to think clearly enough to Apparate himself to safety. Evan would be able to hold his own, and it was essential that he leave before getting captured.

Regulus would be fine. Evan knew he could not focus on his friend or he would lose too much to this particularly clever Auror. His cheeks burned beneath the mask.

He turned his attention full on Edgar and ground his teeth at the man's nauseating smarm. "Protego!" was immediate. As the Stinging Hex dissipated, he charged through the Shield and raised his fist to wipe that disdain from Edgar's face.

He wavered -- Edgar Bones honestly wavered as the surprise of a Death Eater choosing to engage in physical battle washed over him. For just a few brief moments, the disdain was replaced by shock, and just a tiny amount of respect. This was unusual, far from the modus operandi of anyone he'd fought before; anyone dedicated to the Dark Arts, that was...your everyday wizard on the street didn't usually have a problem with landing a punch if he was able. So what did that mean for his opponent? Halfblood, perhaps...foreign? Edgar didn't know, but he was sure that it was important.

Edgar dropped, twisting as he went to Disapparate, and re-appearing with a resounding 'crack' three feet away from where he had been. He'd been too late to do it well, however, and staggered a good foot sideways as his feet touched solid ground again. Evan was tricky, and able to adapt -- two traits Edgar hated in his enemy. Why couldn't they all just be insane?

His non-verbal magic was about the only advantage Edgar had left, since his opponent had all the momentum, skill and anger to fuel his movements; still, he gripped that slim advantage like a dying man, firing off a silent Disarming Charm. "If you don't want to use your wand," he said with a sneer, "then you presumably won't mind if I have it off you for a while?"

The sudden Disapparition of his opponent caused a fleeting moment of pleasure to course through Evan's veins. I've done it, I've succeeded -- was immediately cut off by the loss of his wand to the ground a few metres to his left.

The loss was immediate, sudden and painful. But his immediate reflex was to seek it out again, no matter what the cost. "You should be on the stage!" he roared. He wanted to feel Bones's body break beneath him.

He dove after the slim column of wood, skidding among the dirty detritus in the gutters to grasp it and flip onto his back. "Aguamenti!" he wanted the water to distract the Auror while he rose and resituated the battle to suit his own needs.

"Well, one plays to th-" He was cut off mid-sentence by the force of the water suddenly spraying up at him. Whether or not the Death Eater had intended it, his obvious fury towards Edgar's Disarming had increased the power of his charm what felt like a hundred-fold (though perhaps, in hindsight, the exaggeration was a little severe). Blasted directly in the face by the jet of water, Edgar was lifted off his feet to make contact heavily -and painfully- with the wall behind him. The building shook precariously: it had already taken a hit or two, and looked decidedly shaky.

Staggering to his feet, Edgar thrust his wand out viciously. "Incendio!" he cried, following the fire jinx with a Severing Charm right on its tail. It was a long shot that the bastard might catch fire and get slashed, given that the water still dripping from him had obscured Edgar's aim somewhat, but at least one might make its target. Apparently, Edgar's warm-up act had finished...and the show was about to start.

The line of fire spun toward Evan as he tried to dodge it by skidding to his left (albeit too late) and for his trouble, he received a mark that sliced through his mask and sizzled on his cheek. He could feel the blood begin to ooze ...

The half-second that it took him to react felt like eons. He had watched the man sever the fire with a swift flick of his wrist as he flung it toward him ... could it remain attached (whip-like?) to the end of a wand? He would have to experiment ...

But he was about to lose his anonymity. His hand pressed hard against his mask so that the heel of his palm and the hard material would dig into his flesh to quench the flow. "I want to leave you something! Something grand," he said, striding toward Edgar. "Something to remember me by."

He stopped mere feet from him and aimed his wand straight at Edgar's chest. Crucio was cast silently. He knew he needed to Disapparate but he wanted to wait ... he wanted to see if his curse hit home.

Of course it did. How could it not, from the distance they were at? Edgar's wand was raised, hesitant to cast the first hex even at this distance, for fear of losing his cool and casting something that even the Aurors wouldn't be able to turn a blind eye to. His defensive stance was good but simply not good enough. Bones had never seen the Cruciatus curse cast non-verbally before, and he barely had time to see the jet of light erupt from Evan's wand before he could react.

"Protego!" he cried, as the curse hit him squarely in the chest. There was a searing rush of pain --enough to make him hiss in anger-- before his own protection made it subside, but it left him just enough time to fire off a Blasting curse before the villain made good his escape. "I don't think there's any chance I'm going to forget you, you sneaky bastard." There was no empty threat in Edgar's words -- he knew that voice now, and would be waiting for it.

He smiled anyway, to see his opponent writhe in pain even if it was for a small amount of time. "You remember. Every nuance -- " was all he managed before Edgar's Blasting Curse knocked him off of his feet and into the opposite building that crumbled beneath his sailing weight.

In the midst of the rubble, spitting dust and mud from his mouth, he realised that the mask had all but disintegrated from his face and with a start, he covered himself with the hem of his cloak before using his wand to Disapparate.
