It took some time for Alex to wake up completely. She opened one eye, slowly, and drowsily peered at the room. Or at least at the part of the room she could see with her head still buried in the pillows and her hair all over her eyes. It was a nice, airy room. With light wallpaper. Feeling exhausted by this effort, she closed her eyes again, only to open them up suddenly a few seconds later. From the fetal position she usually slept in, she rolled on her back and stared at the ceiling.
Recollection settled in. This was her new workplace, what was its name again? Archon... Archon Something-or-other. She smiled happily. A new place, a new job, new people to meet! What was she doing still in bed?
She jumped upright in her bed, and fell backwards almost immediately pressing one hand over her eyes. "Nonono, take it easy," she groaned. Sugar... Now where had she put her things? Clinging to her bedside table for support, she stood up and started rummaging in the drawers and on the dressing table.
She didn't remember much of the previous day. The girls had thrown her a farewell party the other night, so she'd slept during the car ride here. It must have taken all day to reach the place, since after arriving she'd gone straight to sleep. Or so she assumed, since she didn't remember unpacking everything. Unpacking everything so neatly? She tilted her head and stared at her emergency food supplies, stored neatly in the top drawer. Someone must have put everything in order for her. So far service was as great as they'd advertised, she thought happily while opening a packet of biscuits.
Before closing the drawer again she noticed that her bottle of sleeping pills was almost empty. I should look for a pharmacy, or something, she thought, and promptly forgot about it.
Still munching on the biscuits, she wandered around the room looking at everything. It really looked comfortable, but she wasn't planning on spending much time there alone. It was probably too late for breakfast, she reflected, but she could head straight for lunch. It would probably take her some time to reach the dining hall anyway, since she didn't know where everything was. She crumpled the empty biscuit wrapping and tossed it in the bin, feeling that now she had enough energy to survive until lunchtime.
Thirty minutes and a shower later she had changed into a pair of capris, white shirt and sandals, and was already feeling hungry again.
She picked up her key card and looked at the 8-digit code printed in the back. She didn't even try to memorize it, and just shoved the card in her pocket. She would just be careful not to lose the card.
Humming a revised version of Enya's "May It Be" beneath her breath, she walked down the corridor that led to the atrium.
