The small timid knock broke the serene midnight silence. Snape’s mouth thinned as he stilled. The rapping continued, grating his nerves. He got up and opened the door.

A bottle of wine lay at his feet, nothing more. The soft sounds of breathing emanated from an unknown spectre, undetectable to untrained ears. Snape suppressed a smirk. With a fluid motion he took the bottle and slammed the door shut.

Hours later, Snape sat in front of the fire in deep rumination, the deep red liquid in a glass.

‘Joy, to you too. Mr Potter.’ he whispered, raising his glass, smirking.
