Peter and I walk to our cars.

“He’s not going to make it is he?”

“He’s a strong kid. I think he will, but he can’t do it alone.”

“I get it, I won’t abandon him.”

“It’s going to take more than you, more than me. He needs…”

“A life.”

Peter nods. “Friends, purpose, and most importantly, a sense of self that isn’t based on who wants to fuck him.”

I get in the jeep. “Well, where can I buy a life?”

Peter laughs and points at me. “Tomorrow. You promised him.”

I nod and light a cigarette. “Goodnight Peter.”

The room is cold and a burst of noise draws me back to the present. I’m not allowed a blanket or pillow so I just sit and shiver and hope the night goes quickly.

Some kids, patients are laughing and joking, occasionally peering in through the window to see who got locked up. I don’t know any of them and they don’t know me.

I wish I could talk to Brian some more, or even Peter. But then I remember about my dad and I just want to run.

The hallway is quiet again and I let myself slip away.

I'm glad to see Brian seems to understand he can't tell Justin he'll be there and then no show.

i'm hoping that we're not that far from getting justin somewhere hopeful, and when you're in the observation room you can't have a blanket, your hands and feet have to be visible at all times, so yeah, it sucks for him, but it's for his own safety.

before brian unserstood what peter was saying, and told him no... justin had every intention of trying again, tonight, to hurt himself. i'd rather he be a little cold, than hurt himself.

Great, great, great, I love it, love it!! You have me on the edge of my seat, how do you do that??!! I want so bad for Justin to make it. In your writing, I can see him so well. One thing, I hope Justin and Brian are more then 'friends'. Brian loves this kid, screwed up he may be, there is already a deep connection between them. Cannot wait to see where you are headed with this.
