Who: Lydia and Mitchell
What: Christmas morning bauble wishes!
When: Forward dated a bit to Christmas morning
Where: Their apartment

It was probably bad to be as happy as Lydia was that Christmas. She had lost her sister only months before, after all. But she knew Jane was safe and happy back home and that was important. And her dream would live on in her bakery thanks to Tom and their new baker he'd found. She had a steady income for life, thanks to her Bauble, though she hadn't chosen unlimited funds. Why should she? She'd worked hard for what she had and she was pretty proud of that and wanted to keep it up. There were some amazing friends in her life, a baby nephew she adored, and a job that actually meant something to others.

And then there was Mitchell.

She never would have pictured herself as the type of woman to settle down, especially before she was thirty. But he meant the world to her. Despite everything, they still endured. He fought every instinct his nature gave him for her, and while she'd never see herself as worthy of that sort of sacrifice, she loved him all the more for it. He had fought so hard to be a man worthy of being loved and for that, he deserved all the love she could give him. He meant so much to her and even though things would likely get difficult in the future as she aged and he didn't, she was willing to try. He had tolerated the bubbly perky girl and stayed with her as she had matured into a mature and loving but still cheerful woman.

That Christmas morning, she stretched lazily, looking over at his empty side of the bed. It was still warm; he'd likely just stepped out for a bit. The initial wave of Seal fear faded and she sat up in bed, releasing her hair from the braid she wore it in to keep it from tangling in the night. Next year, Edward would be old enough to actually enjoy Christmas and his gifts and she'd likely be up at the crack of dawn to go see her nephew open his gifts from Santa. That morning, though, she was looking forward to the Disney parade and pie with her boyfriend. And making a fuss over him while he opened gifts. That bit was always fun.

Lydia had still been asleep when Mitchell had woken, looking just so incredibly peaceful. For a few moments he had watched her with a soft smile on his face before he slipped out of the bed, careful not to wake her. His footsteps light, he made his way to the kitchen, keeping as quiet as possible as he made coffee for her and tea for himself. And as the drinks brewed, he wandered to the small table, picking up his Bauble. He ran his fingers over the glossy surface for a moment before putting it in the pocket of his dressing gown. For months now he had known exactly what he was going to wish for, and had been tempted to make it instantly before he had decided to wait. Not because of any doubts, but because making the wish on Christmas morning seemed appropriate.

And now he was practically bouncing with anticipation.

Careful not to spill the hot drinks, he carried them back to the bedroom, his smile widening when he saw his girlfriend awake. "Good morning, gorgeous." Mitchell placed the mugs down before he leaned over and kissed her deeply, thinking once again just how beautiful she looked when she was still sleepy, hair freshly down and completely relaxed.

"I've got you a couple of presents, but there's one I want to start with." Mitchell sat on the very edge of the bed, careful not to squash the still hidden Bauble in his pocket. "It's sort of a present for me as much as for you though. Interested?"

Having him around first thing in the morning and just before she fell asleep still hadn't gotten old. Moving in with him had been the best decision she'd ever made. Just seeing his smile started her day off in the right way. Her eyes lit up as he entered the room and she accepted his kiss, returning it eagerly. With him, she didnt feel any hesitation about behead or blurry eyes or morning breath. He accepted her in all the ways she accepted him.

She took her mug from his hands, scooting over a bit so he could sit beside her. Her eyes widened like a child's when he mentioned her gifts. Somehow with Mitchell, she got more joy out of spoiling him than in being spoiled. Maybe because no one had really done that for him before. But that didn't mean she didn't like presents!

"Oh?" she asked, her voice taking on that sassy edge. "And just what sort of present could possibly be for us both?" Probably super cute lingerie or something even more on the naughty side and she couldn't say she minded that at all. Mostly because she still loved the way he looked at her, no matter what she was wearing. It could be nothing or it could be gym shorts and one of his old t-shirts. He still looked at her as if she were perfect.

Mitchell had to suppress a smirk at the way Lydia's tone sounded, because really, she wasn't entirely wrong, one of the presents to be opened later was some lingerie he was really looking forward to seeing her in. But this one right now, was something very different.

He moved to actually cover her mouth with one hand so she couldn't interrupt, couldn't ask him if he was sure, or anything even close to those lines. Because he was completely and utterly sure. And with his other hand he took out his Bauble, his gaze never leaving hers, still with that smile.

"I wish to be human."

There. Done. Mitchell was sure he could feel his heart truly thumping in his chest, but just to be sure, he glanced over to a mirror on the wall. There he was. A reflection for the first time in a century. And he had done it, he had lasted the time with the extra strength without losing it, he hadn't fed, hadn't killed anyone, and now he was finally human again. He let out a laugh of joy and actually bounced, removing his hand from Lydia's mouth and kissing her for a moment instead. "Finally!" He kissed her again, while still laughing. "Finally, finally!" After a few more kisses he sat back, grinning goofily. "Happy Christmas."

When his hand covered her mouth, she blinked in surprise. And then his bauble came out of his pocket and she knew. Somehow, instinctively, she knew. By the time it processed, though, by the time her head wrapped around what was happening, the words were out of his mouth. It felt like time stopped as she held her breath and waited.

Then his face broke into a smile. The bauble had disappeared. The wish had worked. She looked over when he did and saw what he did; her handsome boyfriend reflected back at them. Her mouth would have dropped open in shock but then he was kissing her, again and again, and she didn't dare pull away.

"Are you...Mitchell...you can't just..." But he was laughing. He was happy. No, he was thrilled. And god, she wanted to be happy, too. A part of her had hoped for this for so long now. All of her fears about their future were eased. But what if he regretted it? What if he began to resent her, for making him want this? Her hand reached up, touching his cheek, stretched from smiling so widely. "You're sure? You're absolutely sure?" Not that there was much to be done about it now.

The surprise on her face made him laugh more. He couldn't help it, he was slightly giddy from the joy of it, of being human again. Of course she was questioning, confused, which was exactly why he hadn't let her speak until after he had made the wish.

When she touched his cheek, Mitchell pressed his hand over hers, the laughter easing into a warm and genuine smile. "I am completely sure. I've been sure for such a long time. I never wanted to be a vampire, Lydia. It's been slowly killing my soul for a century. I don't want the immortality and the strength, not when it comes with the blood. I want a life, a human life."

He shifted so he could wrap his arms around her, pulling her in close. "And I want it with you. I love you, Lydia Bennet. I love you so very much."

His laughter was infectious at least, and she grinned widely. And, when his expression filled into that warm smile she loved so much, her eyes filled with tears. Leaning into his hold, she tucked her head into his neck. This was more than she could have asked for. While she knew how much he hated fighting the blood, she thought he at least enjoyed the extra perks of being a vampire. He hadn't asked for humanity the year before, she assumed its what he'd wanted.

"Tell me you didn't do this for me," she protested, pulling back to look into those dark brown eyes. He was so good, when the blood wasn't controlling him. And now it never would again and it was almost impossible to believe. She could take him places without either of them worrying that it would be that moment when he snapped. She didn't have to worry that it was too much for him, that he'd tire of fighting.

There were other perks, as well. He'd begin aging. He'd actually be able to sense things the same way she did. There was hope for a future now. One she had barely allowed herself to dream of before but had still somehow longed for it desperately. "I love you, too," she finally replied. "You know I do. But I can't have all of that pressure on me if you hate this. If it isn't what you'd hoped. If..." If he turned out like Hal. She'd seen Alex through so much heartbreak. She honestly didn't know if she could handle it herself.

He understood why she was worried, he did. He'd seen the way Hal had broken down and broken Alex's heart too. Which was why he didn't wave away her concerns, didn't brush them off as silly. "I didn't only do this for you. Not only for us. I did this for me, because it's what I want. I wanted to do it last year, but everything still felt so damn raw and hard and dangerous, so I was scared. But I'm not scared any more."

Being in Sunnydale and being human for those few short days had shown him that. Yes, he had died there, and it had hurt, but he'd managed longer than most and had the time to do a lot of thinking. Prompted oh so much by the visions of Ivan, making him wonder just which world he truly belonged to.

"I don't know if I'll do any better as a human this time round. I wasted it the first time after all. But we both know I was a crap vampire, so I need this, love. To truly be alive again." And really, he thought Ivan would understand. If he knew.

Well, that did her in. The tears that had been threatening fell, but she realized fairly quickly that they were happy tears. And not only for herself. She was happy for him. Happy because he was so incredibly joyful. This man deserved that joy, that excitement. He'd suffered so much, and like he'd said, it had never been what he wanted. The man had sacrificed himself, begged his best friend to end his life, because it wasn't the life he wanted to lead. And god, she loved him for it.

"We'll make sure it's better this time," Lydia assured him, looking into his eyes. There was so much life reflected back at her, and she was almost sure she could see a spark that hadn't been there before. "You can do anything now. Hold a real job, go back to school, whatever the hell you want. We can travel and see things and... Baby, whatever you want, it's yours. We've got everything in front of us now." Because truthfully, he was right. In some ways, this was as much a gift to her as it had been to him.

Smiling peacefully, content for the time that he truly was happy with his choices, she curled into his side. "I'm so proud of you, you know that? You made it. You fought it off, you beat the blood, and now..." Oh, hell, she was still crying. And she didn't regret it one bit. She dropped a kiss lightly to the side of his jaw. "And now you're all mine. I love you, baby."

At first he was somewhat alarmed by the tears before he realized they were happy ones and the laughter came back as Mitchell kissed them away from her cheeks. "I can actually become a proper and productive member of society." His tone was all playful and his grin was huge. "I can be more than just some janitor trying to hide from the world." He did like the idea of school, of getting a proper education that could lead to a more fulfilling job. "Will you help me look at possible school courses? After the holidays and all that. I want to be part of the world, now it's not in danger from me any more."

And the traveling and the having a real life, and the being with her through it all. Mitchell loved the idea of every second of that.

"I am definitely all yours, for all of our lives." One lifetime and he planned on making every moment of it count. "Whenever I was tempted by the blood, I thought of you. You made me strong, love. Strong enough to keep the temptation back. And now I plan on spending every day trying to be the kind of man you deserve."

"Of course I will!" she replied eagerly, a giggle in her voice. "You'll be the cutest university student ever. Oh god, it's ridiculous to think that's cute, isn't it?" The poor kid from Dublin couldn't have hoped for the education he was able to get here. There was an entire world in front of him now and it made her almost as giddy as it did him.

She was still slightly in shock, especially when she rested her hand on his chest and felt the firm beating of his heart. And if she thought it would take her a while to adjust, that was nothing compared to how it would affect him. But she'd do whatever he needed. She trusted him to tell her when he needed help, when he needed to be alone for a bit. If they did this together, they'd be fine.

Which was only confirmed when he said what he did and she felt her heart swell. "You were worth it," she admitted. "First guy to ever look at me the way you do? To...well, to actually love me? I'd do whatever you needed. You treated me differently-like I was special. You deserved that, too. And trust me..." Her voice trailed off as she fought off a ridiculous and useless sob. This was silly. "You're more than what I could hope to deserve."

"Cute?!" Mitchell echoed with a laugh. "I was hoping for something more manly, maybe being the sexiest university student ever, think that's possible." He was so excited though, at the idea of getting a decent education, the kind that he never could have had before. He was just the poor soldier the first human life around. No hope of a college for him. Now though, now he had opportunities.

He loved the feel of her hand against his chest, and really really loved the fact his heart was properly beating under her fingertips. Not just the occasional thump that vampires had, but a regular rhythm. Mitchell wrapped his arms around Lydia, tugging her down until he was lying on the mattress and she was sprawled on top of him.

"Lydia, every other guy you've met is an idiot. Which, admittedly, has worked out well for me. But you are amazing and beautiful and smart and so incredibly special. I'm just incredibly lucky I was the first one to really see that." Lucky was an understatement. Mitchell felt blessed.

"I can think you're gorgeous and still think you're cute," she protested, her grin bright. They'd be attending classes at the same time, meeting up for lunch or coffee on campus. It would be the closest thing to a regular, everyday relationship either of them had ever had. And she loved it.

She easily followed him to the mattress, resting her head in the crook of his neck, occasionally dropping light kisses against the skin she found there. A pulse. An actual pulse beneath her lips. His own, real, fresh blood flowing within. She'd sworn long ago to stand by him no matter what, to help him through anything. And she'd meant it, for the vampire she'd crushed on almost the moment he'd popped up on her journal feed. But now? For the human? She almost couldn't stand how optimistic she felt, even if she was a little scared. It would work. It had to work. They hadn't gotten this far just to fall apart now.

"Even if you hadn't been," she protested, her lips still moving against his skin, "you'd still be the best thing to ever happen to me." Because she couldn't honestly imagine anyone loving her more deeply than he did. It was the most intense feeling she could imagine, and she loved it so, so much. Lifting herself to her elbow, she looked down at his face, tracing the outline of his features with her eyes. She had memorized every curve and plane, but it still didn't stop her from trying to imprint everything. "I don't know what I did to be worthy of having someone like you...but I'm damn glad I did."

Mitchell pretended to groan, though the laughter in his throat gave away his real amusement. "Only you could get away with calling me cute. I mean really, it makes me sound like a puppy or something." Even if he did, on occasion, have pleading puppy eyes when he wanted something.

He loved the feel of her kisses on his neck, and really loved the way it made his heartbeat speed up, made a heat rise in him. All human reactions, the way it was supposed to be. He'd forgotten how good it felt to be human and alive.

"And you're the best thing to ever happen to me," he smiled up at her, enjoying the sight of her smile. And it was true, no one had ever really accepted him so completely the way she had. There had been Annie, who loved him and feared him at the same time, and Josie who had been terrified at first but grew to love him and then decided to leave him. Only Lydia had seen the best and worst of him and never flinched, never wavered, simply accepted all of him and promised to stand by him. And Mitchell knew that even if he had never wished to be human, Lydia would have stayed with him anyway. Which meant so much to him. "You know, we could go back and forth with saying that we're not worthy to have someone as amazing as each other for a while. So why don't we jump to the part where you agree with me that you're brilliant in every single way?"

"I'd better be the only one calling you cute!" Lydia protested with a laugh. "And everyone loves puppies, why is that such a bad thing?" Her nose wrinkled as she tried to look put off by his protests. But she giggled anyway because she was in such a good mood that it was hard not to. It wasn't the Christmas morning she had been expecting, but she couldn't complain for an instant.

"I'm hardly brilliant in every way," she argued. "I'm still slobby and I can't cook which Mom says will make me a terrible wife one day and everyone knows I'm way too hyper and have you seen this nose? Opposite of amazing." Pausing, she took a deep breath and then giggled. "But I love that you think so. And I love you. Every inch of you, imperfections and all." She wasn't dumb enough to think her boyfriend was actually perfect. He was possibly a bigger slob than she was and he smoked and he hadn't held a job in ages. But she loved him in spite of it all. They both still had a lot of growing up to do. Now, though, they could do it together.

"No one else would dare call me cute, and don't use logic at me about puppies," Mitchell laughed as he tried to come up with a counter argument and utterly failed. Oh well, never mind!

"You and I both know that I am the more slobby of the two of us, cooking is overrated, especially with all the takeout places in the States and your nose is gorgeous, so shush." He reached and kissed said nose playfully. Because really, it was a cute nose, he had no idea what she was complaining about. "And I happen to love how hyper you are. For the record." Mitchell liked the way she could see his imperfections and loved him anyway. It was a relief, she had seen the worst of him and still stayed. "You know, thinking of my imperfections, I think I should quit smoking. Since I'm human now."
