Who: Chris Halliwell and Rose Tyler.
What: Showing off his powers, just a little.
Where: The gym.
When: Day 20 - Shortly after noon.
Rating: PG.
Status: Complete.

As soon as he found out about the birds Chris had thought about orbing to the clock tower to make sure Connor was indeed alright. He didn't know exactly where the clock tower was but he could pick up on the other man's presence and that was enough of an indicator for him. It wouldn't do good to not look after his unofficial charge, now would it? But Connor insisted he was fine for now, and Chris really didn't want anyone to know about any of his powers that didn't have to. His friend knew and Remy knew about the teleporting, unfortunately, but that was pretty much the extent of it.

Then the pretty girl that had taken care of the lot of them the day before sounded like she was a little concerned to be staying in the gym and his pesky whitelighter instincts kicked in. Surely it wouldn't be that bad if one more person found out about one of his abilities. Or at least not any worse than having it clear as day to read in his journal that he was a witch.

So Chris had slunk off to a corner of the museum where no one could see him, journal tucked in his back pocket as he orbed himself from there to the gym. It took the span of fifteen, maybe twenty seconds for him to disappear from the museum and reappear at his new destination with the show of little white lights that always accompanied orbing. Since he wasn't sure exactly where she was at he had chosen to orb to about the center of the gym floor, and once he was solid one hand brushed his hair out of his eyes as they sought Rose out. Belatedly Chris hoped there weren't too many other people around.

Truth was, Rose hadn't thought anything of Chris being part witch. Quite frankly, after meeting Tonks and learning of her abilities, not to mention spending a great deal of the previous day with her six year-old self, she didn't think much of witchcraft other than it was probably a pretty cool talent to have. So when the young boy had written all sorts of magical things in his journal, she'd only given it a passing glance, really. So what if he was? Unless he planned to use those witchy powers to kill them all, she was cool with it. When he'd said he had ways around the birds, she hadn't actually expected it to be magical. In fact, she kind of just thought he was trying to talk big.

So when the glowing lights appeared in the middle of the gymnasium, Rose's mouth dropped open. Seriously? Okay, so maybe they could all die here. However, it was possibly the coolest place she'd ever been. A woman who could change her appearance at will and now a man--correction, a very good-looking man--who could appear in one place and then another? Yeah. She enjoyed. She enjoyed a great deal.

"You weren't playing around when you said you could get around the birds, were you?" she said with a stunned tone. After all, it wasn't every day you ran into someone who could pull that one off! She'd been sitting on the far wall of the gym, minding her own business. Patching Andy up had proven she was way out of her league with all these smart doctoral types and she was keen on keeping to herself. That and...well, she was still reeling from the previous day's revelations. Sorry to say. But she'd hopped up when Chris' lights had started forming, and she'd watched him in amazement. What do you know, Rose Tyler could still be amazed by something. "Chris, I assume?" she asked with a giggle. Who else could it be!

It wasn't hard for him to notice her, since he mostly remembered what she looked like from the day before, even if he had been a good deal shorter then. The grin was instant when he heard her words and tone. "I try not to lie, especially to someone who's been so kind to me." Her reaction was, well. Priceless. Perhaps a little more so than Connor's had been, given Rose was a beautiful girl. And blonde. He did kind of have a thing for blondes, if only because they didn't remind him of his fiance. Well, former fiance... if he had changed the future, would he even meet Bianca again?

Those so weren't thoughts to be having now and Chris shook himself, brushing them off, and focused his attention on Rose. "That would be me." he replied, smiling as he walked over. "I'm glad to see you're alright." He hadn't been entirely sure what he would find, since she had sounded a bit unsure herself about the state of the building. Chris didn't care for the condition of the gym either, but it had held up under the onslaught of kids the day before, so he figured it was probably a little more sturdy than he and Connor had wanted to give it credit for.

Ooh, that grin was sort of irresistable. Especially considering she hadn't seen it much the day before. "Well, look at that," she teased, smirking at him a bit, "Chris actually does know how to smile. I wasn't sure, given your...less than cheerful attitude from yesterday." Of course, she hadn't expected any of the kids to actually be happy to be there. Dora had been easy enough to convince that she was dreaming, but most of the others had heard other tales and weren't so easily swayed. And after her talk with him in her journal, Rose had the feeling that young Chris had seen his share of hurt anyway.

But this Chris... Well. Maybe he had, too. But at that moment he was smiling and she was a typical teenaged girl all over again, tucking her hair behind her ear and smiling back. Was she blushing? Oh, Lord, she hoped she wasn't blushing. "I told you I was fine," she reminded him, giving him a slightly smug look, "and I've no idea what led you to believe otherwise." Had she sounded overly concerned? Well, if she had been, it was for the town in general. She'd already seen one man pecked to shreds, no need to see anyone else in the same state.

Her teasing only made his smile widen, despite a brief effort to hide it just to be a brat. "Yes, I do in fact know how to smile. Hard to believe, I know. But stranger things have happened." If she was blushing, Chris didn't notice. He was more concerned with trying not to stare impolitely because the girl was undeniably attractive. And nice, friendly even. The day before aside, since most people tried to be nice to kids by default, Chris hadn't been sure there were any relatively nice people around.

"Well, you know, there are a ridiculous amount of birds outside that seem to not like people too much. But other than that, nah, no reason for concern." he said with a slight smirk of his own, hands slipping halfway into his pockets. "And that of course isn't counting how the buildings here leave a bit to be desired."

Oh, brats Rose was used to. She'd dealt with a big old group of them the day before. Okay, fine, most of them had been sweethearts. Scared kids who just needed to play and let off some steam. Though she'd never tell their adult versions, she'd fallen head over heels for little Dora, and had been more than content to hold young Sigma and listen to him ramble on about his home. But adult brats were a whole different species. And she knew a thing or two about different species by then.

"Glad to see you do," she said finally, giving him a playful look. "It's not a bad smile, either. Ought to do it more. It's a good look on you." Actually, she had the feeling most things were a good look on him. But that? Would be too forward even for her. Unless she changed her name to like, Jane Harkness. Besides, they were in the scary place of doom. Maybe everyone looked good at that point, she had no idea.

Oh, the birds. Them. Right! Right, the reason he was there. To get around the birds, check on her... Right. "Oh, man-eating birds, is that all?" she said, trying to sound nonchalant and not grin. She waved her hand, as if to say it was nothing she hadn't seen before. "Besides, the gym's relatively safe. Compared to the church, at least. Or that barn." Worried about Remy? Nope, not Rose! "Not too many windows or vents for them to get through. See? Told you it'd be fine."

If Chris were the type to blush, he just might have at Rose's playful and rather flirty words. Flirting, really? Oh hell, why not. It wasn't like being all dark and dreary would get any of them out of here. He wasn't holding out on the chance that he would happen to find a natural time portal here, or be able to get the time traveling spell right, though Chris would still try for both, no matter how unlikely it was. But right now, with a giant collection of kind of evil birds outside? It was the kind of thing where one almost had to distract themselves with lighter things or they might go a bit mad. Cabin fever and all that.

So he didn't blush, but he did grin somewhat sheepishly. "Well if you say it's a good look then it absolutely has to be." He lightly teased her, moving to lean back against the wall beside her. It sure beat standing in front of her like they were two teens passing in the hall didn't know how to be anything but bashful in front of the other. "Relatively safe, yeah, I guess you're right. If a bunch of kids managed not to tear it down then birds certainly shouldn't be able to." He chuckled, one hand rubbing at the back of his neck as he again thought about the previous day. Then he looked over at Rose still with a bit of a grin. "So if you're fine does that mean I should leave you to your... what? Sitting and holding up this wall? You're doing a damn good job, I have to say."

Maybe if she weren't so angry and hurt at the moment, their conversation might have taken a different turn. She probably would have laughed at his fancy trick and complimented him on it and sent him on his way back to wherever it was he'd left before he'd come to check on her. They'd probably chat for a moment or two and he'd head off to do some brave and daring rescue.

But...well, she was angry, and she was definitely hurt. And he was cute and she was feeling pretty darn alone and what harm would it do? It wasn't as if she was throwing him into a locker and snogging him senseless. Not that it wouldn't cross her mind some point later on when it would cause her to blush ashamedly. But for the moment, it was simply talking. And that was something Rose Tyler was very, very good at.

"I dunno," she admitted, shrugging as she turned to face him as he leaned beside her. Instead of two kids in a hallway stopping to be bashful, they looked like the couple in the hallway who stopped to talk between classes. But Rose couldn't see herself and therefore had no idea. "I mean, I might need some help. This wall's awfully heavy, you know. I'm tough, don't get me wrong, but physically? I'm kind of a wimp." As Jimmy Stone could attest to. "You never know, it could fall over and squish anyone in here and it'd be all my fault. You wouldn't want your former sitter living with that sort of guilt, would you?" Her smile was bright, then, as she tilted her face up to his, the laughter reaching her eyes.

"Not sure how much help I'll be. I tend to get thrown around a lot back home." But then, that was a lot of times by magical means rather than physical. Still hurt the same, though. "But I'm sure between the two of us we can keep it standing. Or in the event it does start to fall? I can at least get us to safety." He winked at her, letting it go unsaid that he could orb more than simply himself. And Chris would certainly get her to safety if need be. Instinct and all.

His hands came out of his pockets to brush his hair out of his eyes, absently thinking he would probably need a haircut after awhile. Hopefully they'd all be out of this place by then, as he was pretty sure scissors weren't something they were likely to find. At least not any that weren't rusted beyond any possible use. "You were pretty great yesterday, you know. If it'd been me stuck with a bunch of little kids?" Chris paused to groan and roll his eyes, being slightly dramatic for amusement's sake. "It would've been bad. I don't think I could have kept my cool at all. Sometimes it's hard enough for me to do that normally." he said with a chuckle, smiling at Rose.

It was probably the corniest conversation in the history of the universe, but Rose couldn't help but giggle. Sure, talking to Jack was helping her deal, but this bloke? Complete stranger. Knew nothing about the nonsense that had just gone down in her life, knew nothing about the fact that her whole world had just crumbled around her. All he knew was that she was some poor soul who'd helped out a load of pre-schoolers. Or were they in school by that age? She couldn't really remember. It was hard to tell with discussions of magic schools and Academies and whatever the heck it was the Spock went to.

And, though there was no way she'd say so, the lock of hair that fell into his eyes was terribly cute. Hmm.

"I don't know what everyone's problem was," she said with a smirk. "Kids aren't so hard. They're just little people. They like to play, they like to have fun." At that, she shot him a pointed look. "Well, some of them. Some prefer to hide in the corner and be mopey." Obviously she was referring to him, but at least she did so with a smile. "Those you just give some time to work their own things out. Sometimes they'll join in eventually, sometimes they'll wait until they're holding up a gymnasium wall with you to be any good, really."

Chris laughed at the look she gave him and held up his hands in mock surrender. "Hey! If there'd have been board games or something I would have had some fun. I can't help I was a quiet kid." And at the time he couldn't help that his brother was turning evil and his parents were always busy. Childhood was really not one of his favorite times to remember. Though one could ask if there were any that he did. At least Rose was keeping a smile on his face, keeping him in good spirits. That was kind of a rare thing, and he might tell her so. At some point.

"What about you? Were you the sort of kid to dive in and play with everyone else? I might need to know this, if that kind of experiment ever happens again and you're one of the lucky ones who gets shrunk." His smile had softened a little, though his tone was still a little teasing. Chris was genuinely curious, and he figured it was a fairly safe topic besides. Well. There was always the chance it wouldn't be, but he had plenty of stories he could share if need be. Yeah, he was trying not to show all his cards but Rose was easy to talk to. And he did kind of have half his cards out on the table already.

Should she bother? "Somehow I'm thinking my childhood would bore you in comparison," Rose pointed out, giving a shy little shrug. "I'm just a plain, ordinary human. My dad died when I was little, but mum made sure I didn't lack for anything. We weren't wealthy, but I had food and all. Nothing overly traumatic." A somewhat faraway look flickered over her face, and she considered it. "I think I would've been the one leading the games, even back then, though. Or starting up talent shows, or choreographing song and dance numbers for the girls at the Estate. That's just...who I was." And really, looking back on it, it may not have seemed much, but it had shaped the Rose Tyler that stood before him at that moment. And that was something that would blossom into a hero in her own right. Someday.

"In fact," she added, perking up a bit, "I'd have probably hounded you until you finally did join us. Consider your little self lucky that I mellowed out some as an adult." Adult. Was that what she was? Eew, boring.

She wanted to know more about him. Wanted to know about the not nice brother he'd mentioned, about his magical parents, especially that dad of his. But adult Rose couldn't ask, and she hadn't been lucky enough to be one of the six year-olds who could ask a thousand questions and get away with it. So she simply stuffed her hands in the pockets of her hoodie and tilted her head at him. "And don't go giving them ideas, either. Bad enough Ianto offered up the idea of turning us into old people. Arthritis and I aren't well-suited."

Chris didn't find what she told him boring at all. His gaze softened a little when she mentioned her father dying. He hadn't been a little tot when his mom died -- was killed, voice corrected in his head -- but thirteen had been plenty young enough. And his father had certainly been busy with everyone else's problems long before then.

He could feel all the emotions just waiting for their chance to take hold so he did his best to brush such thoughts off and focus on her, hands shoving deep in the pockets of his jeans. "Isn't there a theater around? Perhaps you can still get a song and dance number in. A little children's theater or something." he quipped, flashing her a sideways smile. The smile lingered as he arched a brow at her. "Mellow, huh? You don't really seem mellow to me, and mellow's kind of boring anyway. Unless it's melodramatic." The last was added with a grin.

The mention of the opposite end of the spectrum had Chris making a face and shuddering. "I agree, that would suck way worse than being a kid. I like being young and spry, thank you very much."

"I'd need some little children for a children's theater," Rose reminded him, her smile turning into a bit of a smirk. "Feel like volunteering? I could have you doing Pippin in no time. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat? Oh, I know. Sound of Music." She impulsively hummed a couple of bars of The Lonely Goatherd before grinning widely in his direction. Apparently, this place made you do insane things you wouldn't ordinarily. Like threatening a really cute guy with show tunes. Today's experiment? Wasn't the birds at all, but rather being forced a drug which made one act like a total idiot in front of pretty people.

"I can be pretty melodramatic, don't let me kid you," Rose pointed out with a slightly more playful smile. "Drama queen through and through, that's me. Besides, mellow's not always boring! It's better than the bossy and slightly hyper little kid I was." She'd have been the one all the kids here had hated. In fact, she probably would've demanded the boys listen to her whether they liked it or not.

Oh, wait. She'd done that the day before anyway. Silly boys. Why couldn't they be more like Dora and Yana?

Against her better judgment, though, Rose bit her bottom lip and smiled up at him. "Oh, spry, are you? Hard for me to tell, you were the one holding up the wall in here yesterday. It was Andy I practically had to peel off the ceiling, after all."

"Oh no, don't you go getting any ideas!" He shuddered in mock horror as he laughed, shaking his head. "No singing and dancing for me. I'll just watch. I'm pretty sure you'd do a far better job than I, anyway." Chris hated making a fool of himself, especially in front of a pretty girl, so there was no way short of a spell that he would even attempt any sort of theater antics. He didn't even sing in the shower. Though he might attempt a tune if he was intoxicated, but that was another matter.

Chris arched a brow, still grinning as she mentioned being a bossy kid. "Are you saying you were only bossy as a kid?" he teased, fully prepared to get smacked for such a comment. "That's because I didn't eat all that sugar. And it's probably a good thing, or I might've scared you to death by trying to put myself on the roof or something." He didn't even want to think how badly that could have turned out.

"Shame," Rose replied, lifting an eyebrow and giving him that grin of hers, with mischief in her eyes and the tip of her tongue poking through her teeth. "I personally think you'd be adorable dancing about doing, say, The King and I. Course, we'd have to shave you." Mmm. Not as appealing. He was terribly cute with all that floppy hair. "No, I'm sticking with Sound of Music. Captain Von Trapp would suit you, I think."

And if he broke into Edelweiss, she'd probably melt into a puddle of Rose on the gymnasium floor. Probably not a good look for her. Maybe she was better if he didn't run around singing.

"At least if you ended up on the roof, it'd probably have been magical in nature," Rose pointed out, giggling. "When the others tried to get up there--" A shudder ran through her, but she was still smiling. Mostly because she knew she looked cuter when she smiled. Um. How about that. "Of course, then I'd have had to have gone up there and dragged you down. Or sent Dora up there after you, her I trust!"

Chris crinkled his nose as he made a face, a slight look of horror on his face, but he couldn't hold back the laughter as she continued on the tangent. Sad thing was? She could probably get him to perform for her, at least a little. Something about that look on her face...

"Oh yes, definitely magical. Though I don't know if I could get all the way up there at that age..." He trailed off as he turned his gaze up to the ceiling, eying the support beams. It could have been bad. Even if he'd gotten up there, had he slipped his instinct to orb himself to the ground might not have kicked in and he could have gotten just as hurt as one of the others would. Looking back at Rose, he quirked a brow and tried not to smirk. "You'd try and come up after me, huh? Or do you mean more that you'd stand down here with your hands on your hips demanding I come down right this instant?"

It was impossible not to. Rose laughed fully at the image he painted for her. "You make me sound like my mum. Hands on hips, one foot tapping, shooting me that death glare to get in this house right now or no telly for a month." Which, really, should have been a sign right there! "Then I guess that would have been me," she confessed. "Learning by example and all."

"I'd have caught you, though," she told him, looking as reassuring as she could manage, considering she was flushing pink and smiling brightly. "If you'd gone and fallen, you silly git. But honestly? I'd probably have been the one trying to climb up there and get you. I actually once got stuck on the rope of a barrage balloon in the middle of London because I was following some kid who looked lost." And then she'd gone and met Jack. Funny how those things worked out. Following little Chris had led her to meet...well, big Chris.

"I think all moms are a little alike in that way. Hands on hips, using our full name and everything." he added with a chuckle, though his smile wilted a little as he thought about Piper. He wasn't sure which had been the right thing to do over the course of that year, do his best not to get close to her as he had for most of it or try and make up for lost time the way his grandfather had suggested as he had at the end. Being around her when she was long dead in his future had still been hard.

Chris shook himself from his thoughts when Rose assured that she probably would have climbed up after him. It made his smile brightened anew and he absently thought that she would probably make a good whitelighter if she were from his world. No, not probably. She would. She cared about people... and likely more than he did. He kept his thoughts to himself though. "Don't all kids usually look lost? Hell, some people don't outgrow it. Though too I guess not everyone's good with direction." He shifted how he was standing, resting his shoulder against the wall so he could face her, the two of them practically mirroring the other. Definitely acting like infatuated high schoolers.

The teen posture could only have been made more complete with a bookbag on his back and a set of text books in her arms. From the tilt of her head against the wall to her hands tucked into the front pocket of her hoodie, Rose looked every bit her age. She'd even pulled her hair up into a makeshift ponytail with a rubber band, despite Jackie Tyler's coiuntless warnings that it would cause her hair to snag. Nothing wrong with keeping it out of her face, after all.

"Your mum was like that, too, then?" Oh, she wanted to know more. So much more. She wanted to know about living with witches and she wanted to know about evil brothers and she wanted to know what cereal he liked for breakfast and what aftershave he wore...

Okay. Maybe that was a wee bit much. But still! Her inquisitive nature had her aching to know about the different world her companions had come from. To hopefully ease him into telling her a bit more, she smiled and revealed a little known fact of her own. "Jamie was lost. Very lost. More than most kids will ever be. He'd been in an accident when a bomb fell nearby. Technically? He was dead." If that wasn't a conversation starter, Rose didn't know what else could be!

"Oh yeah." he quickly agreed, nodding slightly. "Christopher Perry Halliwell, get your butt inside this house right this minute before I call your father!" He had straightened slightly as he mimicked his mother's tone, recalling an event from his childhood, and though Chris smiled it was sad. So many bittersweet memories.

He cleared his throat quietly as he pushed down the wave of emotion that threatened to rise, one hand emerging from a pocket to push his hair out of his eyes. This was no time for him to feel sorry for himself. And at least he didn't have to fake being interested in Rose's words. Chris tilted his head to the side a little, completely undoing the work of his hand, a curious expression coming to his face. "So he was a ghost then, this kid? A lost soul?" One good thing about his crazy magical life and learning all about the Charmed Ones' history? There wasn't much that truly phased him.

Before she called his father. Rose definitely knew how those sweet memories could turn sour, even if they were lovely to recall. Her mother had never had to yell that. Rose had never actually had a single, solid male influence in her life. Maybe that was the reason she'd flitted around from boy to boy when she was younger, pausing only long enough to give Mickey Smith the time of day for a bit each time before turning back around. It had been near enough the same with Jackie and her various boyfriends that marched in and out of young Rose's life.

But that had been long ago. That had been before Jimmy, and long before the Doctor. And was he avoiding? No, probably not. She just hadn't been nosy enough. Besides, she'd gotten his middle name out of it. And a last name to match, actually. That could come in handy some day.

"A zombie, sort of, actually," she replied instead. Oh, if Rose only knew. Maybe they truly did have this place tapped and she'd just fed them their latest idea! "Pretty amazing, actually. His mum was going around parading herself as his sister, unwed twenty year-old, that sort. It was a bit like watching Hollyoaks." The zombie part she'd give him but the fact that it had all occurred during World War II? No, apparently, that part he had to work for? "Saved him, though. A friend of mine did, I mean. Put him back together and everything." As crazy as Chris' own history was, that couldn't possibly come as too much of a shock, right?

His brows rose at that. "A zombie, really?" Now that was something he admittedly had never had to deal with or particularly read about. Chris did, however, enjoy cinema as much as anyone else his age and had watched more than a few horror movies over the years. "Now that's one thing I've never seen." Oh kids, maybe they really did give those in charge ideas. Tsk, tsk.

"Do you mean literally had to put him back together? Did he die then? Or... get whatever kind of peace there would be for a zombie?" His brow furrowed as he tried to work out the possible logic in his head. "And what's Hollyoaks? Some sort of soap opera type show?" Apparently it was his turn to have a load of questions, but he couldn't help it. What Rose was saying was kind of fascinating.

Rose wasn't used to being fascinating anymore. Not when one traveled with one of the most fascinating people, um, ever. But it was attention from a cute boy just the same, and that she ate up. Perhaps she was laying it on a bit thick, but he had experience with magic, for Heaven's sake. (He had experience with that, too, Rose, you just didn't know it yet!) Surely nothing about her travels would be too out of line for him. Or. Well. Most things about them, at least.

So she leaned in, touching his arm lightly, as if she had a secret to share. Which she sort of did, really. She probably wouldn't go around telling this to just anyone, after all. "Okay, first of all? Hollyoaks is cheesy soap goodness, don't watch it. Seriously. You'll get hooked in a week. But secondly?" How to describe Jamie to someone with no experience with other worlds? "Jamie was...special. He didn't die, actually. For once, everyone lived." She smiled almost as wide as the Doctor had when he'd declared the same thing. "He got his soul back. From his mother, of all things." It had been one of the most beautiful moments she'd ever witnessed and her eyes teared up just a bit. Rose herself wanted to feel that way someday.

He leaned in when she did, eyes cutting briefly to the side as if they were in fact teens having a bit of a private chat during gym class and someone might interrupt at any minute. The gym was, of course, mostly empty. And everyone in this place seemed to keep a bit to themselves anyhow, at least as far as Chris had noticed. He grinned slightly when Rose confirmed the bit about the soap opera but didn't comment. Chris was more interested in finding out about this kid she was talking about.

"So... once he got his soul back he wasn't a zombie anymore? He was just a kid then?" He supposed he could see a way for that to work. Souls didn't always immediately pass on and without a soul present, some other means could conceivably be found to animate a body. It was something he'd have to think about more to fully wrap his mind around but it made enough sense in the moment. That, and he was a little distracted from figuring out the logic once he noted the expression on Rose's face. He'd be a piss-poor whitelighter if he couldn't pick up on emotion at least a little.

Smiling softly, Chris shifted how he was leaning against the wall just slightly so he could take his hand out of his pocket, not disturbing where she was lightly touching his other arm. He reached out to tuck a few stray strands of hair behind her ear, smile growing a touch as he looked at her. "Always nice when there's a happy ending. Never seems like it happens enough, no matter how hard we try sometimes."

There were a few things a bloke could do to win a spot in Rose's heart. Calling her beautiful, complimenting her dancing skills, telling her how good she was for them...and playing with her hair. When Chris' hand pushed her hair back, she was officially mush. No matter where she'd gone or who she'd met, Rose was still a woman at the end of the day, and a woman who enjoyed being pampered and spoiled. It was why, despite the times he was an arse, she let Jack cuddle her. It was why she all but melted whenever the Doctor's eyes lit up when he saw her. And it was why she smiled bashfully and ducked her head just a bit as Chris reached for her.

"It really was a beautiful ending," she confirmed, glancing back up at him through her lashes. Okay, maybe she was turning on the charm a little more than she usually would. But the story really had been lovely, right? "He was just a normal little boy, and all the people who'd been hurt were put right. Space age healing, mind you, but it worked just the same." Was she really blabbering all of this to a complete stranger? Well, she couldn't really help that, could she? He'd touched her! She was bound to babble.

Her face grew darker, but there was still a slight smile there. "I'd seen a lot of terrible things before that. Things that scared me or made me angry. It was just really, really great to see a child walk away unscathed. He was little, too, barely four I'd wager, he probably won't even remember it." Didn't remember it. Jamie would've been about sixty or so by then, wouldn't he? Ugh, maths.

The sight of her smile made his brighten a little, and he merely hooked his thumb in his pocket when he let his hand drop back down. Her story didn't really sound all that outlandish as it might to some, regardless of where or when it happened. And the important part was that it had ended well. How many messes had he been in where that wasn't the case, or the happy ending came with a price? How many innocents had he lost despite his best efforts because the world had become so dangerous and dark? Chris could understand hanging on to happiness over something that went well for a change. Better happiness than other emotions, as he tended to do.

"Children really are the most innocent. I think that's what makes it worse when anything happens to them, or when they're at risk. But it also makes it all the more special when they do end up alright." His gaze dropped for a moment, thinking of his brother. Thinking of himself. "And I dunno, some kids remember a lot. Guess it's good the lot of us weren't four yesterday." Chris added with a light chuckle as he raised his back to look at her. Her words made him wonder just what kind of things she had seen. Maybe her life wasn't so different from his own, merely with different creatures and beings. She dealt with aliens and space travel, he dealt with demons and dwarves and a spot of time travel.

"No, no," Rose protested quickly, grinning brightly. "Believe me, six was a perfect age. Everyone could feed themselves, everyone was potty-trained, and you all knew how to not die. My biggest fear would've been them turning you all into infants on me. The way most of you reacted to kids?" A shudder ran through her, but she giggled. "It'd have been me and maybe one or two others trying to juggle ten babies. God, you'd think we were asking people to play with man-eating lions, not a group of grade schoolers!"

There was something special about him. Not like some of the others she'd been attracted to. Sure, she'd thought they were. Maybe he'd prove her wrong, too. But she didn't think so. Her perception of people was improving every day, and the heart on this one? Massive. "There's more to you than just...standard witchy stuff, isn't there?" she questioned. Chris could tell her what he wanted, it didn't mean she wouldn't ask. Laughing a little, Rose shrugged. "Not that I entirely know what standard witchy stuff is. Most of this is still new to me."

"I don't know, kids can be pretty scary when they want to be. It could have been a lot worse. Could've been ten crying, scared kids all yelling for their parents. Good thing you knew how to keep that from happening." he remarked, giving her a pointed look. Even as a kid he had been observant, and he knew Rose had played a bit part the day before in keeping things relatively calm. Hell, if he hadn't been a kid she probably would have been able to rope him into helping her, if the way she was getting him to chat now was any indication of her slight influence.

At her question Chris raised his brows slightly and in what he hoped was an innocent manner. Who, him? More than average? He glanced down at the floor between them somewhat bashfully as he pondered what exactly to say. Well, he had come out and told Connor up front, hadn't he? And even if Chris had decided the other man was his unofficial charge in this place, he knew he would keep an eye on Rose too. A whitelighter could have more than one charge, after all, and this place was clearly outside of the normal rules besides.

"I don't know that there's much that's standard here. Pretty sure that witches are a little different in that other girl's world than mine." And it made him quite interested to talk to Tonks. Magic was magic, he did mean that, but from what little she had written he could tell there were differences.

"My mother was a witch. My father..." Was an angel. Well, it was true, wasn't it? It still sounded kind of funny, and people could have funny reactions when you started talking about things like angels and demons. Sure, Connor had seemed to taken him comparing himself to a guardian angel well enough, but that certainly wasn't the type of reaction Chris knew to be common. "He was something else. What I did, popping in here like that? I get that from him." Chris finally looked back up at her as he talked, and he lightly bit his lower lip after. It may not matter in the grand scheme of things, and he might not even remember what happened in this place after they got out (if they got out), but what Rose thought mattered to him. And if she laughed and thought he was crazy for talking about angels and Heaven? Well, it would sting. And it was that worry that made him hesitate.

Chris had nothing to be anxious about where Rose was concerned. After all, other than initial culture shock, she had accepted that her new friend was from a destroyed planet with little trouble. And all the things she'd seen since then had been handled relatively well. Besides which, she'd never laugh. Ever. It wasn't her way. Unless he committed some horrible faux pas like wearing leather shorts or socks with sandals.

So she slid down the wall, and patted the spot at her side, smiling up at him to offer him to join her. "Must've made it hard as a kid," she teased, playing with the ends of her hair. "Couldn't exactly yell 'I hate you!' and slam your door when he could just pop his way right on in." A smirk crossed her features and she shot him a mischievous look. What exactly did "something else" mean?

"I actually think it's kind of fascinating," she said, giving him the chance to decide just how much he could open up to her. "That, even though you both consider yourselves witches and do magic, you and Tonks are from two entirely different worlds. It's so...different here, you know? I mean, I'm here with friends...people I know. But some of them? Only exist in my future. They know me but I have no idea who they are. Isn't that weird?" It was, wasn't it? She wasn't making a total arse of herself, was she?

It was like she intuitively knew he needed some kind of reassurance and Chris couldn't help but smile, sliding down to sit with her. Yeah, she was the sort of kind soul that would make a perfect whitelighter, no doubt. "He wasn't really around enough for that to happen but yeah, if he was that would've made tantrums hard." Leaning against the wall, he drew his legs up partway, far enough that he could stretch his arms out and rest them on his knees. Sitting was certainly more comfortable than standing, even if they were sitting on a hard gymnasium floor. It kind of felt strange, to sit and talk about such things or even just think about them, because it wasn't what he did. Hell, who would he have to talk to? In his future he was in hiding and in the past he couldn't talk about the future.

"I get the time thing, actually. Where I just came from was in my past. Dying on the day I was born. How's that for weird?" He glanced over at her, cracking a smile. "I used a spell to go back to the past to try and stop something from happening, and I had to be around my family and I couldn't tell them who I was. My mom... and my dad. I couldn't tell them because I didn't know how or what it might change in the future. Guess I should have known they'd all find out anyway." Chris looked at his hands as he talked, picking at the seam of one pant leg. He was a little envious of her hoodie; he tended to toy with the cuffs of his sleeves when he was a little anxious, and t-shirt sleeves just weren't long enough for that. During the pause he sighed, thinking about what he was telling her. For all he knew he hadn't changed the future at all. Or perhaps Leo managed to stop Gideon, but another evil force found a way to get to Wyatt so he'd really only delayed the future that he knew. Too many questions and he had no way of knowing any of the answers.

"He's an angel, my father. In my world we're called whitelighters, because of that light when we appear, but we're basically guardian angels." Chris answered the unspoken question, looking over at her. Apparently he was willing to pretty much completely open up.

Well, then. It was like he'd been sent to talk sense into her. What, did all the men around this place have a cult going or something? The 'don't let Rose be such a downer' cult? That was definitely not what she'd expected. Not that she minded. In her heart, she knew he was even newer than she was and that it was highly unlikely Jack or the Doctor had gotten to him yet. She also didn't think Chris seemed like the sort to be swayed by suggestions from others, and she really didn't want to believe he was only talking to her to relay their messages anyway. That particular thought burned.

But there he was, basically telling her the Doctor's story, whether he knew it or not. Being forced to be around someone you cared about but being unable to tell them who you were? Well. That was exactly what the man had gone through, wasn't it? "How did they react? When they found out who you were?" No, it wasn't the same scenario, but she wanted...no, she needed to know. Was she being completely unreasonable?

Maybe she should have been more surprised. Or called it bullshit. But she couldn't, because come on, what else could possibly surprise her by that point? "A guardian angel, hmm? Is that why you got dragged here, I wonder? To babysit everyone?" Ha, funny terminology, wasn't it? Considering she'd baby-sat him. "I didn't think angels were supposed to be good-looking. I've seen It's a Wonderful Life, and the ones in A Christmas Carol are never very good looking. Then again, Dickens himself wasn't, either." And she knew that from experience!

Chris shrugged, looking back at his hands. "As well as anyone would, I guess. I think they both wished they hadn't been so hard on me when I first showed up but I'd pretty much been expecting that. I'd have been suspicious of me too. Showing up from the future telling everyone I had to keep something bad from happening but I didn't know exactly when it would happen. I dunno, it was just kind of awkward all around for awhile. They didn't even know they were going to have another son, and I didn't want to get close because of how things had played out in my future."

He quieted for a few moments, staring off into space. "In the end I was still their son, no matter that I was from twenty-some years in the future. They just wanted to be there for me and even make up for lost time." Goddess, how Leo had wanted to. He'd gotten annoying there for awhile, always being around, but it had meant more to Chris than Leo would probably ever know.

Chris coughed softly to try and get rid of the sudden lump in his throat, a hand wiping at his eyes, and he started to blush. This was embarrassing, and she surely didn't care about his sob story. Everyone had their own problems after all. He did manage a small smile though, as he glanced back over at her. "I'm only half angel." he reminded, rubbing a hand over his hair and hoping she wouldn't notice the color in his cheeks. Yes Rose, he noticed you called him good-looking, and you weren't the only one with a little possible crush. "And I think maybe it's just the light playing tricks on you."

Oh, but Rose did care about his sob story. She didn't want anyone hurting, let alone someone so open and honest with her. Despite her fury, she didn't even want He Who Wasn't Open and Honest With Her hurting. She'd never wish it for Chris, who'd been nothing but kind to her since the moment they'd met. Even if at the moment they'd met, he'd been a whopping six years-old.

So she reached out, giving his knee a gentle but reassuring squeeze. "You realize how brave that was? I should be lecturing you about how stupid it was, but believe me, I've a friend who'll take care of that," she added with a small laugh. "Skipping around through time...attempting to change an established timeline? You could've been in so much danger." What if something had gone wrong? What if he'd erased himself? Rose knew how that sort of thing could happen. After all, how many times had she heard that time wasn't a linear pattern? It wasn't point A to point B. It was point A with a left turn at E then a brief stop at B and a U turn that got you back to C before you'd finally wind up over at D somewhere.

"It's natural, though," she countered, even though she wasn't positive what, exactly, had played out in the future of baby Chris that led adult Chris to go back. "To want to get close, to want to know what you could. I went back to see the day my dad died," she admitted, flushing a bit. "I was only a baby when it happened. I kind of messed up the whole of space and time, though. Tried to save him, see..." Her laugh was strained. "Time's a funny thing, if you make one wrong move. There are laws to it..." Laws she'd broken over and over again. Laws that were being broken as they spoke because this place should've collapsed on itself just by existing.

Rose laughed again, but this time it was a bit more genuine. "So does that mean it's the witch half of you that's good-looking?" Only Rose Tyler could try and explain time's being and follow it up with flirting. Okay, Rose and probably Jack. No, definitely Jack.

Her touch was reassuring, and one hand moved to cover hers, squeezing gently. "Oh, I know. Trust me, I know time's dangerous. I nearly erased myself... well, no, I did blink out of existence there for a little while. Not cool. Though I did find out that the Angel of Death is just as intimidating as one would think them to be." He chuckled softly, but it didn't have much mirth to it; it was either that or give in a little to the moisture stinging his eyes and he was not about to do that in front of Rose if he could help it. A guy had to have a little pride. It was bad enough opening up and talking about things he hadn't really discussed with anyone other than when certain things were happening.

Chris looked back over at her when she spoke of going back in time to see her father, smiling softly. He could certainly understand her reasons for that. "I don't think anyone could fault you for wanting to save him. There were more than a few times I wished I could go back and save my mom. Though I guess it's good to know that time pretty much works the same no matter where we come from." Part of him wanted to ask how that situation had resolved itself, if she had had to stand back and let the inevitable happen, but it felt too personal, no matter the cute blush that added color to her cheeks. She was quick to flirt after mentioning it as well, and that distracted him just a bit.

"I dunno. I think you're just saying I'm good-looking to try and make me smile." In which case it was working, even if it did make him want to blush. One downside of being rather in touch with emotions and having magic that worked off them? He could become rather emotional himself, for better or worse.

She wouldn't tell him, because what guy wanted to seem completely weak? But she liked this soft side of him. More men should show it. Of course, she also didn't want to think more men had been through the hard times that Chris had, especially as young as he was. He couldn't be more than a couple of years older than Rose herself. Twenty-one or so. No older than twenty-four, she was sure of it. The fact that he'd held up as well as he had was saying something, really.

"You actually erased yourself?" Rose blurted in surprise. "How did you make it back? You've met the Angel of Death? Like...going after you?" Her first reaction was, she had to tell the Doctor. She'd never heard of it. She'd thought it might be possible, maybe, especially messing around in your own timeline the way she'd been commanded not to do. But she'd never heard of anyone actually doing it before!

And then she remembered she wasn't actually speaking to the Doctor just then. Either one. Oops.

She could've gone on and on about how time was all messed up here. About how it should have imploded the planet all around them. How the knowledge she carried should have been enough to rip them all apart, but it hadn't. But really, that was hardly the way to pick up a guy, now was it? Or even to just make a new friend. So she smiled sideways at him, her grin playful. "I could be," she admitted. "Or I could just be enjoying the view."

She almost seemed excited by his tale, the curious sort of excitement, and it had Chris blushing almost immediately. "I... yeah. Things that happened when I first appeared helped to break my parents up, so they weren't together when I was supposed to be conceived. Then they ended up on the ghostly plane while I was fading and they didn't make it back in time so I kind of... disappeared. But then when they came back I popped back into existence so all was well. It's kind of a long story." He was rubbing at the back of his neck as he talked, mostly looking at their hands on his knee but occasionally shooting glances over at her. Chris had practically just met the girl and already she was under his skin. In a good way.

He tried to get his blush under control but he probably shouldn't have bothered when he caught sight of her playful grin. Oh hell. "Enjoying the view? Isn't that usually supposed to be my line?" Chris laughed, looking away, but he was quick to look back at her. He was pretty sure he'd never met anyone like her; perhaps there was something decent about this place. "You're sweet, you know. You've got a good heart." His smile softened as he looked at her and he again squeezed her hand before gently curling his fingers to hold her hand. If they kept this up too much longer, he might just try and kiss her. Well. Assuming Rose didn't try for it first.

Rose couldn't help giggling. Really, who wouldn't? He was cute, she was lonely, and he was actually treating her like someone who mattered. Weren't many of those around, if she thought about it long enough. Which she didn't want to. Thinking led to hurt feelings. Feelings were complicated. This? Flirting, hand holding, not to mention talking to a real live part-witch, part-angel? That...was also kind of complicated, but it was also completely brilliant. She'd probably have wondered what sort of person he was, telling her all these things, getting close to her, holding her hand, all of that, if it weren't for the fact that she was sort of used to that. The Doctor had done the exact same sort of thing.

Hmm. Best not to be thinking of that when those pretty blue eyes were on her, wasn't it? So instead, she dipped her head slightly, her own blush creeping up her neck and into her cheeks. "I...don't mean to? I mean, obviously, I don't want to be some horrible person," she amended quickly. "I just... It's not intentional. When someone's hurting, it's only right to be there for them. I didn't always think that way. I was a pretty awful kid. Well, teenager. Still technically a teenager now, I guess," she added with a short laugh. "Feels a lot older, though. One of the problems with messing around with time. I may have missed my own birthday and I'm not likely to know it." As she talked, her thumb absently rubbed his knuckles, and she was completely unaware she was doing it.

Well. Perhaps not completely. But she didn't notice for several seconds, at least.

Goddess, she was adorable. Well... more than adorable. Downright attractive. Which was probably horrible to think because he should be focused on finding a way out of the place and getting back to his time. But honestly? There was a part of him that wasn't in that much of a hurry to get out of here. For all he knew he was dead; he'd been dying before he showed up here, and it was quite possible that wasn't going to change when he left. And surely there had to be some sort of reason for him being brought here. He had been raised on talk of fate and destiny and all those sorts of things so they weren't thoughts he could simply turn off.

All that aside... a selfish part of him felt he deserved at least this. One quiet little moment with someone who seemed more than willing to listen to whatever he wanted to say. Even hybrids like him that weren't supposed to exist because they could become too powerful deserved a little genuine affection.

So Chris made no move to bring attention to the gentle rubbing of her thumb across his knuckles, for fear of her stopping and drawing her hand away. He just smiled and let his eyes run over her face, listening to her speak while at the same time wondering if she would smack him if he tried to kiss her. "I find it hard to believe you were ever awful, Rose. And trust me, you are most definitely not a horrible person. I can kinda sense that sort of thing." That whole, being an angel and all. The look in his eyes was as warm as his smile as he turned his body just slightly, making it easier for him to reach over and hook a finger under her chin. He gently tilted her head up a touch so his eyes could find hers, searching for a moment before he leaned in.

It was just a little kiss, barely more than a soft brush of lips, but it was more than enough to make his heart race a bit faster. Now Chris just had to hope she wouldn't shove him away or slap him.

Shoving him away and slapping him were two things furthest from Rose's mind. How her breath smelled, whether or not she looked like she'd embraced the grunge look, and if she was being played...now those were forefront. Those faded in and out of her conscious faster than she could think about her actual reaction.

Which might have been a little more than Chris had bargained for, because Rose's head instinctively tilted and kissed him again, just slightly, just enough to make it count. When she finally did pull back, hazel eyes met blue and she blinked and blushed like she was all of thirteen again. Which hadn't been all that long ago, sure, but she'd come a very, very long way since then. From Mickey to Jimmy Stone, back to Mickey, and on to the Doctor, with a few twists and turns along the way. Men who'd hurt her, men who hadn't appreciated her, and men who looked at her as if she'd dribbled down her shirt when she simply wanted to know what they meant by the sun's rotation affecting a planet three galaxies away. All of that had come before you, Chris. All of that was what Rose could and should have been measuring you up against at that exact moment.

But she didn't. Because it was Rose and because she just wanted affection like a normal person. And, admittedly, she'd liked it. "Do all guardian angels go around snogging those they protect?" she teased, peering up at him from beneath her eyelashes. "Pretty sure that didn't happen on It's a Wonderful Life." She couldn't help herself. She giggled slightly. "Think it might have on Touched by an Angel, maybe. And that movie with Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage." Oh yeah. She was babbling. Either a sign of a very good kiss or a very embarrassed Rose. Or, you know, both.

When he felt her lips press back to his, making it more of a kiss and less a tentative brush of lips, Chris felt a little rush of relief that he hadn't been reading the signs wrong. Of course, that was secondary to the thought that he wanted to kiss her again. Kiss her good and proper and make it count.

He was already starting to smile and her teasing made his smile grow, and he let his hand turn so he could brush his knuckles along her cheek. "Well, you know, the movies have a way of getting things wrong. You don't see me wearing a white robe." Chris teased back. Of course, everyone wore such robes up in the Heavenly Plane but that was different, and unimportant at the moment. He highly doubted full whitelighters were immune to wanting affection or being attracted to mortals, even those they were charged to protect. Just because it was something that was frowned on didn't mean it didn't happen; his mere existence was proof enough of that. "Are you saying if I look out for you I can't kiss you?" he asked quietly with a slight arch of one brow, the smile lingering. "I don't think those have to be mutually exclusive. Seems rather unfair if that is the case."

What girl didn't want to be pet? There he was, all tanned skin and gorgeous eyes and floppy dark hair...and those cheekbones. Rose had a bit of a weakness for cheekbones. It explained a lot, really. Even Mickey had a nice facial structure.

And she was possibly the most disloyal girlfriend in the world. Thinking of Mickey after having snogged someone else. Then again, they'd all but decided it was over, hadn't they? That night in Cardiff? So she refused to feel guilty for all but melting at the feeling of Chris' hand against her cheek, or his lips on hers.

"Maybe, maybe not," she shrugged. "Don't want you falling from grace on my account, though." And then, to reassure him she was only teasing, she tilted her face towards his, brushing her mouth on his once more before stopping to rest her forehead on his. "Then again," she pondered out loud, "you're here. Suppose that's saying something for the whole angels reproducing thing. So I guess, in context, a bit of kissing is nothing in comparison. Surely the folks upstairs wouldn't be too terribly angry if I happened to sneak you a kiss now and again?"

When Rose babbled? She made it good. If Chris wanted entertainment, he'd commit this to memory and play it back time and again.

Oh, he already should have fallen from grace. He would have if Leo would have gone through with making him attend that hearing before the Elders. And then? Then Chris would have been in a world of trouble. But disaster had been averted then and he managed to keep his whitelighter powers and status, and hadn't had to deal with his lie unraveling any sooner than it did. Though, it might have been nice to have Leo around right then, to ask just what would happen if Chris fell for a mortal. Or to ask how he had restrained himself from being with Piper for so long.

"Mm, surely not." he easily agreed, his fingers now brushing her hair back, idly trailing through the strands as he let his hand fall to her shoulder. "Kissing is relatively harmless. No reproducing involved at all." Chris assured her, but there was a hint of laughter in his voice. Since she was still close, he didn't hesitate now to tilt his head just slightly to press his lips to hers. His hand holding hers gently squeezed and he let his eyes shut as he kissed her, all soft lips and no tongue as he was in no hurry to press his luck. He caught that bit about 'a kiss now and again' and Chris definitely wanted again to happen.

Rose relaxed completely at that last kiss, easing into his touch as if it were second nature. It sort of made her stop and wonder what sort of thing he himself had going on back home. And that only reminded her that someday, they would get out of there. And the Doctor would become the other him and this bloke here? Well, he'd been dying when he'd come here, hadn't he? What if being here didn't change that? And even if he survived, then what? It wasn't as if she could spirit him off to the TARDIS with her, or run off to his world, either.

But Rose refused to think that way. Unlike some in the area with them, she was a 'here and now' sort. She wanted to believe that good could happen, even if just for a short time. So if she could only be here in this man's arms for a little while, letting him snog her whenever the mood struck, well... Then that was just how it had to be. Because she'd be damned if she was going to deny herself something that felt nice just because it wouldn't last forever.

So she allowed her lips to work over his, giving a bit more without pushing. He had a sweet taste to him, possibly from that whole angel thing, or maybe she was just really attracted to him and found it on her own. Still, it caused her to keep the pair of them connected a few seconds longer than probably was appropriate. "Harmless, is it?" she asked breathlessly when she pulled away. "Seems so. Actually, you could probably factor that into your healing abilities." Because she was feeling about a thousand times better already.

Did 'appropriate' really matter anymore? Or in this place, for that matter? He didn't think so, but then, Chris wasn't exactly thinking of anything past the welcome feel of Rose's soft lips against his. Just as breathless when they parted, his eyes were slow to flutter open as she spoke, a content little smile coming to his lips. "Healing by kiss? I think I could handle that." There was a brief pause as Chris absently licked his lips, swearing he could taste her there. "But I think that's something I'll reserve only for you." He tilted his head against the wall as he gazed at Rose fondly, his thumb rubbing lightly back and forth against her skin just to touch her. Stressful and intense situations had a way of bringing people together, he knew that, but sometimes people simply found each other when others might think it unlikely. Chris had absolutely no complaints about having a beautiful friend he could talk to fairly openly and make out with from time to time. And in a place like this it was better not to be alone. A little humanity to ground him could only do him good.
