Who: Chris Halliwell and Rose Tyler.
What: Showing off his powers, just a little.
Where: The gym.
When: Day 20 - Shortly after noon.
Rating: PG.
Status: Complete.

As soon as he found out about the birds Chris had thought about orbing to the clock tower to make sure Connor was indeed alright. He didn't know exactly where the clock tower was but he could pick up on the other man's presence and that was enough of an indicator for him. It wouldn't do good to not look after his unofficial charge, now would it? But Connor insisted he was fine for now, and Chris really didn't want anyone to know about any of his powers that didn't have to. His friend knew and Remy knew about the teleporting, unfortunately, but that was pretty much the extent of it.

Then the pretty girl that had taken care of the lot of them the day before sounded like she was a little concerned to be staying in the gym and his pesky whitelighter instincts kicked in. Surely it wouldn't be that bad if one more person found out about one of his abilities. Or at least not any worse than having it clear as day to read in his journal that he was a witch.

So Chris had slunk off to a corner of the museum where no one could see him, journal tucked in his back pocket as he orbed himself from there to the gym. It took the span of fifteen, maybe twenty seconds for him to disappear from the museum and reappear at his new destination with the show of little white lights that always accompanied orbing. Since he wasn't sure exactly where she was at he had chosen to orb to about the center of the gym floor, and once he was solid one hand brushed his hair out of his eyes as they sought Rose out. Belatedly Chris hoped there weren't too many other people around.

Truth was, Rose hadn't thought anything of Chris being part witch. Quite frankly, after meeting Tonks and learning of her abilities, not to mention spending a great deal of the previous day with her six year-old self, she didn't think much of witchcraft other than it was probably a pretty cool talent to have. So when the young boy had written all sorts of magical things in his journal, she'd only given it a passing glance, really. So what if he was? Unless he planned to use those witchy powers to kill them all, she was cool with it. When he'd said he had ways around the birds, she hadn't actually expected it to be magical. In fact, she kind of just thought he was trying to talk big.

So when the glowing lights appeared in the middle of the gymnasium, Rose's mouth dropped open. Seriously? Okay, so maybe they could all die here. However, it was possibly the coolest place she'd ever been. A woman who could change her appearance at will and now a man--correction, a very good-looking man--who could appear in one place and then another? Yeah. She enjoyed. She enjoyed a great deal.

"You weren't playing around when you said you could get around the birds, were you?" she said with a stunned tone. After all, it wasn't every day you ran into someone who could pull that one off! She'd been sitting on the far wall of the gym, minding her own business. Patching Andy up had proven she was way out of her league with all these smart doctoral types and she was keen on keeping to herself. That and...well, she was still reeling from the previous day's revelations. Sorry to say. But she'd hopped up when Chris' lights had started forming, and she'd watched him in amazement. What do you know, Rose Tyler could still be amazed by something. "Chris, I assume?" she asked with a giggle. Who else could it be!

It wasn't hard for him to notice her, since he mostly remembered what she looked like from the day before, even if he had been a good deal shorter then. The grin was instant when he heard her words and tone. "I try not to lie, especially to someone who's been so kind to me." Her reaction was, well. Priceless. Perhaps a little more so than Connor's had been, given Rose was a beautiful girl. And blonde. He did kind of have a thing for blondes, if only because they didn't remind him of his fiance. Well, former fiance... if he had changed the future, would he even meet Bianca again?

Those so weren't thoughts to be having now and Chris shook himself, brushing them off, and focused his attention on Rose. "That would be me." he replied, smiling as he walked over. "I'm glad to see you're alright." He hadn't been entirely sure what he would find, since she had sounded a bit unsure herself about the state of the building. Chris didn't care for the condition of the gym either, but it had held up under the onslaught of kids the day before, so he figured it was probably a little more sturdy than he and Connor had wanted to give it credit for.

Ooh, that grin was sort of irresistable. Especially considering she hadn't seen it much the day before. "Well, look at that," she teased, smirking at him a bit, "Chris actually does know how to smile. I wasn't sure, given your...less than cheerful attitude from yesterday." Of course, she hadn't expected any of the kids to actually be happy to be there. Dora had been easy enough to convince that she was dreaming, but most of the others had heard other tales and weren't so easily swayed. And after her talk with him in her journal, Rose had the feeling that young Chris had seen his share of hurt anyway.

But this Chris... Well. Maybe he had, too. But at that moment he was smiling and she was a typical teenaged girl all over again, tucking her hair behind her ear and smiling back. Was she blushing? Oh, Lord, she hoped she wasn't blushing. "I told you I was fine," she reminded him, giving him a slightly smug look, "and I've no idea what led you to believe otherwise." Had she sounded overly concerned? Well, if she had been, it was for the town in general. She'd already seen one man pecked to shreds, no need to see anyone else in the same state.

Her teasing only made his smile widen, despite a brief effort to hide it just to be a brat. "Yes, I do in fact know how to smile. Hard to believe, I know. But stranger things have happened." If she was blushing, Chris didn't notice. He was more concerned with trying not to stare impolitely because the girl was undeniably attractive. And nice, friendly even. The day before aside, since most people tried to be nice to kids by default, Chris hadn't been sure there were any relatively nice people around.

"Well, you know, there are a ridiculous amount of birds outside that seem to not like people too much. But other than that, nah, no reason for concern." he said with a slight smirk of his own, hands slipping halfway into his pockets. "And that of course isn't counting how the buildings here leave a bit to be desired."

Oh, brats Rose was used to. She'd dealt with a big old group of them the day before. Okay, fine, most of them had been sweethearts. Scared kids who just needed to play and let off some steam. Though she'd never tell their adult versions, she'd fallen head over heels for little Dora, and had been more than content to hold young Sigma and listen to him ramble on about his home. But adult brats were a whole different species. And she knew a thing or two about different species by then.

"Glad to see you do," she said finally, giving him a playful look. "It's not a bad smile, either. Ought to do it more. It's a good look on you." Actually, she had the feeling most things were a good look on him. But that? Would be too forward even for her. Unless she changed her name to like, Jane Harkness. Besides, they were in the scary place of doom. Maybe everyone looked good at that point, she had no idea.

Oh, the birds. Them. Right! Right, the reason he was there. To get around the birds, check on her... Right. "Oh, man-eating birds, is that all?" she said, trying to sound nonchalant and not grin. She waved her hand, as if to say it was nothing she hadn't seen before. "Besides, the gym's relatively safe. Compared to the church, at least. Or that barn." Worried about Remy? Nope, not Rose! "Not too many windows or vents for them to get through. See? Told you it'd be fine."

If Chris were the type to blush, he just might have at Rose's playful and rather flirty words. Flirting, really? Oh hell, why not. It wasn't like being all dark and dreary would get any of them out of here. He wasn't holding out on the chance that he would happen to find a natural time portal here, or be able to get the time traveling spell right, though Chris would still try for both, no matter how unlikely it was. But right now, with a giant collection of kind of evil birds outside? It was the kind of thing where one almost had to distract themselves with lighter things or they might go a bit mad. Cabin fever and all that.

So he didn't blush, but he did grin somewhat sheepishly. "Well if you say it's a good look then it absolutely has to be." He lightly teased her, moving to lean back against the wall beside her. It sure beat standing in front of her like they were two teens passing in the hall didn't know how to be anything but bashful in front of the other. "Relatively safe, yeah, I guess you're right. If a bunch of kids managed not to tear it down then birds certainly shouldn't be able to." He chuckled, one hand rubbing at the back of his neck as he again thought about the previous day. Then he looked over at Rose still with a bit of a grin. "So if you're fine does that mean I should leave you to your... what? Sitting and holding up this wall? You're doing a damn good job, I have to say."

Maybe if she weren't so angry and hurt at the moment, their conversation might have taken a different turn. She probably would have laughed at his fancy trick and complimented him on it and sent him on his way back to wherever it was he'd left before he'd come to check on her. They'd probably chat for a moment or two and he'd head off to do some brave and daring rescue.

But...well, she was angry, and she was definitely hurt. And he was cute and she was feeling pretty darn alone and what harm would it do? It wasn't as if she was throwing him into a locker and snogging him senseless. Not that it wouldn't cross her mind some point later on when it would cause her to blush ashamedly. But for the moment, it was simply talking. And that was something Rose Tyler was very, very good at.

"I dunno," she admitted, shrugging as she turned to face him as he leaned beside her. Instead of two kids in a hallway stopping to be bashful, they looked like the couple in the hallway who stopped to talk between classes. But Rose couldn't see herself and therefore had no idea. "I mean, I might need some help. This wall's awfully heavy, you know. I'm tough, don't get me wrong, but physically? I'm kind of a wimp." As Jimmy Stone could attest to. "You never know, it could fall over and squish anyone in here and it'd be all my fault. You wouldn't want your former sitter living with that sort of guilt, would you?" Her smile was bright, then, as she tilted her face up to his, the laughter reaching her eyes.

"Not sure how much help I'll be. I tend to get thrown around a lot back home." But then, that was a lot of times by magical means rather than physical. Still hurt the same, though. "But I'm sure between the two of us we can keep it standing. Or in the event it does start to fall? I can at least get us to safety." He winked at her, letting it go unsaid that he could orb more than simply himself. And Chris would certainly get her to safety if need be. Instinct and all.

His hands came out of his pockets to brush his hair out of his eyes, absently thinking he would probably need a haircut after awhile. Hopefully they'd all be out of this place by then, as he was pretty sure scissors weren't something they were likely to find. At least not any that weren't rusted beyond any possible use. "You were pretty great yesterday, you know. If it'd been me stuck with a bunch of little kids?" Chris paused to groan and roll his eyes, being slightly dramatic for amusement's sake. "It would've been bad. I don't think I could have kept my cool at all. Sometimes it's hard enough for me to do that normally." he said with a chuckle, smiling at Rose.

It was probably the corniest conversation in the history of the universe, but Rose couldn't help but giggle. Sure, talking to Jack was helping her deal, but this bloke? Complete stranger. Knew nothing about the nonsense that had just gone down in her life, knew nothing about the fact that her whole world had just crumbled around her. All he knew was that she was some poor soul who'd helped out a load of pre-schoolers. Or were they in school by that age? She couldn't really remember. It was hard to tell with discussions of magic schools and Academies and whatever the heck it was the Spock went to.

And, though there was no way she'd say so, the lock of hair that fell into his eyes was terribly cute. Hmm.

"I don't know what everyone's problem was," she said with a smirk. "Kids aren't so hard. They're just little people. They like to play, they like to have fun." At that, she shot him a pointed look. "Well, some of them. Some prefer to hide in the corner and be mopey." Obviously she was referring to him, but at least she did so with a smile. "Those you just give some time to work their own things out. Sometimes they'll join in eventually, sometimes they'll wait until they're holding up a gymnasium wall with you to be any good, really."

Chris laughed at the look she gave him and held up his hands in mock surrender. "Hey! If there'd have been board games or something I would have had some fun. I can't help I was a quiet kid." And at the time he couldn't help that his brother was turning evil and his parents were always busy. Childhood was really not one of his favorite times to remember. Though one could ask if there were any that he did. At least Rose was keeping a smile on his face, keeping him in good spirits. That was kind of a rare thing, and he might tell her so. At some point.

"What about you? Were you the sort of kid to dive in and play with everyone else? I might need to know this, if that kind of experiment ever happens again and you're one of the lucky ones who gets shrunk." His smile had softened a little, though his tone was still a little teasing. Chris was genuinely curious, and he figured it was a fairly safe topic besides. Well. There was always the chance it wouldn't be, but he had plenty of stories he could share if need be. Yeah, he was trying not to show all his cards but Rose was easy to talk to. And he did kind of have half his cards out on the table already.

Should she bother? "Somehow I'm thinking my childhood would bore you in comparison," Rose pointed out, giving a shy little shrug. "I'm just a plain, ordinary human. My dad died when I was little, but mum made sure I didn't lack for anything. We weren't wealthy, but I had food and all. Nothing overly traumatic." A somewhat faraway look flickered over her face, and she considered it. "I think I would've been the one leading the games, even back then, though. Or starting up talent shows, or choreographing song and dance numbers for the girls at the Estate. That's just...who I was." And really, looking back on it, it may not have seemed much, but it had shaped the Rose Tyler that stood before him at that moment. And that was something that would blossom into a hero in her own right. Someday.

"In fact," she added, perking up a bit, "I'd have probably hounded you until you finally did join us. Consider your little self lucky that I mellowed out some as an adult." Adult. Was that what she was? Eew, boring.

She wanted to know more about him. Wanted to know about the not nice brother he'd mentioned, about his magical parents, especially that dad of his. But adult Rose couldn't ask, and she hadn't been lucky enough to be one of the six year-olds who could ask a thousand questions and get away with it. So she simply stuffed her hands in the pockets of her hoodie and tilted her head at him. "And don't go giving them ideas, either. Bad enough Ianto offered up the idea of turning us into old people. Arthritis and I aren't well-suited."

Chris didn't find what she told him boring at all. His gaze softened a little when she mentioned her father dying. He hadn't been a little tot when his mom died -- was killed, voice corrected in his head -- but thirteen had been plenty young enough. And his father had certainly been busy with everyone else's problems long before then.

He could feel all the emotions just waiting for their chance to take hold so he did his best to brush such thoughts off and focus on her, hands shoving deep in the pockets of his jeans. "Isn't there a theater around? Perhaps you can still get a song and dance number in. A little children's theater or something." he quipped, flashing her a sideways smile. The smile lingered as he arched a brow at her. "Mellow, huh? You don't really seem mellow to me, and mellow's kind of boring anyway. Unless it's melodramatic." The last was added with a grin.

The mention of the opposite end of the spectrum had Chris making a face and shuddering. "I agree, that would suck way worse than being a kid. I like being young and spry, thank you very much."

"I'd need some little children for a children's theater," Rose reminded him, her smile turning into a bit of a smirk. "Feel like volunteering? I could have you doing Pippin in no time. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat? Oh, I know. Sound of Music." She impulsively hummed a couple of bars of The Lonely Goatherd before grinning widely in his direction. Apparently, this place made you do insane things you wouldn't ordinarily. Like threatening a really cute guy with show tunes. Today's experiment? Wasn't the birds at all, but rather being forced a drug which made one act like a total idiot in front of pretty people.

"I can be pretty melodramatic, don't let me kid you," Rose pointed out with a slightly more playful smile. "Drama queen through and through, that's me. Besides, mellow's not always boring! It's better than the bossy and slightly hyper little kid I was." She'd have been the one all the kids here had hated. In fact, she probably would've demanded the boys listen to her whether they liked it or not.

Oh, wait. She'd done that the day before anyway. Silly boys. Why couldn't they be more like Dora and Yana?

Against her better judgment, though, Rose bit her bottom lip and smiled up at him. "Oh, spry, are you? Hard for me to tell, you were the one holding up the wall in here yesterday. It was Andy I practically had to peel off the ceiling, after all."

"Oh no, don't you go getting any ideas!" He shuddered in mock horror as he laughed, shaking his head. "No singing and dancing for me. I'll just watch. I'm pretty sure you'd do a far better job than I, anyway." Chris hated making a fool of himself, especially in front of a pretty girl, so there was no way short of a spell that he would even attempt any sort of theater antics. He didn't even sing in the shower. Though he might attempt a tune if he was intoxicated, but that was another matter.

Chris arched a brow, still grinning as she mentioned being a bossy kid. "Are you saying you were only bossy as a kid?" he teased, fully prepared to get smacked for such a comment. "That's because I didn't eat all that sugar. And it's probably a good thing, or I might've scared you to death by trying to put myself on the roof or something." He didn't even want to think how badly that could have turned out.
