It has been brought to my attention that I failed to introduce myself properly to the network. This is what happens when your sole contact in town was raised by wolves.

Good morning. I'm Daniel Arlington, usually called Darlington to differentiate me from the four previous Daniel Arlingtons. I am recently assigned to the Special Collections department at the Great Library, which I've learned still includes making people wear gloves before handling fragile texts, but also includes preventing them from being bitten by particularly aggressive literature. Pleased to meet you all.

A question, while I'm here: do those of you who used magic in your worlds of origin find that your magic has altered at all since coming here?

[Filtered to Stern]
There is little more humbling than attempting to look up local history, finding yourself bereft of any context, and discovering that you need to start in the middle grades section of the library. I was able to move through it quickly, but my ego may never recover from the initial shot.

I think you've discovered the extent of my curiosity when it comes to other magicks. Congratulations.

I am glad to hear that you're working to prevent it, and hope that you met with some marginal success, though I would guess that if it's requisite for some higher magicks that you've an uphill battle.

Luckily most people don't know that killing the right person in our world can make a nexus of power similar to a leyline convergence. If we can keep it that way, that should keep the trouble down.

So it has to be a certain person? Not anyone will do?

No, sorry, don't answer that. I don't want to know.

I wouldn't have told you anyway, not that it's necessary or would even work here. But in the interest of making sure nobody goes making random human sacrifices: no, you can't just kill anybody and get a nexus. If you could, Baltimore would be covered in them.

Well, that is good to know, at least.

Are you from Baltimore, then? My parents lived there for a time, before I was born.

I'm not. Baltimore is just the first city I think of when I think "high murder rate." I'm from New Haven, Connecticut--which admittedly isn't much better.

I suppose you're being factious and that a murder without the ritualistic components wouldn't enact any magical afte

Goddammit why do you insist on asking questions about human sacrifice, Courcey?

I assume the homicide rate in Baltimore must have changed since my time. It was known more for the railways when my parents lived there. I've gleaned that you were a student at Yale?

I was until I was, and very close to graduation. I assume you're from sometime in the 19th or early 20th century?

What did you study?

Early 20th. It was 1908 when I'd arrived here. Not here, of course, I've only been here a little over a year now.

Officially, all kinds of things. Yale provides a broad education. Unofficially, how magic maps to locations and draws power from them and the patterns therein.

You seem to be an academic sort as well. What's your area?

I studied the Natural Sciences at Oxford, but it's always been magical research for me.

Unfortunately, there's no formal institutions in my world for magical education, only private education and tutours, and there's been no widely published independent research in the English speaking world in decades, and so my own research had been slow and, sadly, lacking any especially interesting breakthroughs. Before arriving here, I had only just been introduced to the independent research of Mrs. Flora Sutton, though she'd kept all her research private and I only discovered her journals after her death. They are extensive, and I'm grateful she kept them, but I wish I would have had more of a chance to ask her questions directly.
