I'm going to have to just go ahead and purchase one of those fancy espresso machines for anyone who has assisted me with my return to Vallo, because at this rate I'm never going to be able to afford coffees for everyone who has gotten me back into my various locked accounts.

I'm very sorry. We didn't have computers where I'm from. We had guards, and you could usually just kill those when you wanted past them. We're all learning together.

Most dismissed me as a pretentious lackey with a preference for dramatics and black.

I don't believe you would have. Well. You'd have been agreed with the pretension, but the rest, you've got a sharp eye.

I made countless mistakes in my former career, but underestimating a target was never one of them.

You'd have that in common with Kihrin - he was as subtle as a brick to the face in most aspects, but he read people stunningly well. It's a trait I'm grateful for, given my restricted position at the time... even if it translates to a great deal of roasting in the afterward.

Apologies that I disappeared like I did. I'm going to implement new wards on my office. I thought you might like to know.

I don't understand "roasting" in this context.

New wards should be fun.

Good-natured teasing about one's shortcomings.

I thought that might brighten you up.

I enjoy a challenge.

Do you need a new chair?

No. Are you trying to impress me?

Just curious. You haven't said much about where you were in your absence or what happened while you were there.

Nothing too high-backed, please.

I've been wrestling with feeling grateful I did not return home, and then feeling guilty for being grateful. Emotional torment is not something upon which I enjoy extrapolating. I'm sure I don't need to say as much to you, with all your various-- dimensional complications.

No, you don't. But given your usual dedication to chronicling everything around you, it struck me as odd that you hadn't submitted a full report to the DOA on your journey abroad.

I didn't realize it would be read. Most of my reports tend to be reluctantly accepted and filed away.

That's never stopped you before.

Whatever it is, you don't want to talk about it. If it were an unbelievable horror, your sense of duty would demand that you talk about it regardless of your personal feelings, at least in a formal report. Accordingly, wherever you went was unpleasant in some way, but even your eternally cautious nature deems it so unthreatening that you can safely dismiss it as a danger and never tell the DOA where you were whisked off to.

I can't abide a mystery.

For someone as secretive as you are, you have little respect for the privacy of others. I suppose that comes with the territory.

Old habits are hard to break. Count yourself lucky; the last man who was too much of an enigma for me got knocked out and tossed into a derelict whale oil refinery.

I learn to practise restraint in my verbosity, and you learn how to deal with a mystery you are too good a person to break open using either cleverness or force.

This will be good for both of us.
