Ashley wasn't as nervous as she thought she'd be. It was a very important conversation they were about to have but she felt confident in the outcome. She was mostly nervous for showing up on his doorstep without any warning. No letter, no phone call, just a knock on the door.

She went only slightly conservative with her outfit. Of course the shirt was only revealing if she removed her jacket. She fully planned to keep the jacket on so he wouldn't be distracted. She also decided to go with her four inch red heels making her only 4 inches shorter than him rather than the usual 8. She wasn't sure why she needed that extra height. Especially since they would most likely be sitting down for most of the conversation.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. No matter what happened, she was going to be okay. With that thought in mind, she knocked on his door.

Since his meeting with Shepard, Darcy had been spending quite a lot of time alone in his apartment reading. The Austen was a happy break for his brain, but he knew he had to be learning instead. So, he was working his way through history books - he’d started on adult editions, but eventually found that using high school textbooks was going to be the quickest way to catch up. He was only on the Victorians, but he’d had a lot to catch up on.

There was a knock at the door, and so he folded the page over and set the book aside. Since he was sitting about in his own apartment, he was only in trousers, shirt and open waistcoat, no jacket or tie and not all buttoned up as usual in public.

The door swung open, and when he saw who it was, he couldn’t help but smile.

“Miss Sully. What a pleasant surprise. Will you come in?” he asked, stepping aside to let her enter if she pleased.

"I thought a surprise visit was in order." She smiled and stepped inside when he offered. She didn't even try to hide checking him out and she really did love it when he wore that. Nice and relaxed. Or at least as relaxed as Mr Darcy could get.

"I'm not interrupting anything, am I?" She folded her hands in front of her, trying very hard not to be too coy. She didn't want to bother him and she really did want to talk.

"I'm very pleased to see you," he nodded, smiling a little wider as she came inside. More subtly than her, he did indeed give her a quick look over. "You're very bright. And tall," he told her. Stating facts was apparently as close to a real compliment as he was capable of sometimes, but he hoped she understood that he meant it well.

"No, you are not interrupting. You are never interrupting," he insisted. "Come in, come in, do you want some tea? A drink? Something to eat?" he questioned her rapidly. Okay, so maybe he was a little anxious to please her.

	"Thank you." She laughed softly. "I haven't worn these shoes in a while." She lifted one pant leg just enough to show off her shoe. She did love them. She smiled affectionately at the rapid fire questions. "Some tea would be really nice, thank you." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Darcy looked curiously as she lifted the material to show him why she was taller. "Ah, most fashionable, and you haven't broken an ankle or anything," he teased lightly. He did like it.

He gave her a little nod, and her sweet smile seemed soothing to him, calmed him down a notch. "Okay. Have a seat, I'll get us some tea," he nodded, gesturing for her to sit down before he disappeared to brew a pot of tea for them.

Darcy boiled water for tea, and set up a tray with their cups, milk, and sugar. He was back with her quite quickly, and he set the tray down on a coffee table. He would leave it to brew in the pot for a moment.

“How are you?” he asked, before taking a seat next to her, closer than he had on previous visits. “How is your cousin?” he added, remembering the young telepath.

Ashley scooted just a tiny bit closer when he sat next to her. She smiled. "I'm good. Had a really great breakfast." She moved some hair behind her ear.

"Bobby's doing better. He's actually managed to convince his mom that he doesn't have to stay in bed. He isn't quite comfortable leaving the apartment though." She sighed a little. She hated that Bobby was having to go through all that.

"Good," he nodded, trying and failing to control his smile as he noticed her moving a little bit closer. But there was definitely a guilt there. He didn't know how much her mother had told her about their meeting, but he could guess from her still wanting to be close to him that perhaps it hadn't been much. How could he explain it without hurting her? He wasn't sure it was possible.

"I'm glad he's up and about, at least. That is good progress," he said, just avoiding the topic he knew was going to have to come up eventually. He lifted the pot and poured them out some tea.

	Ashley nodded, moving some hair behind her ear again. "It's also possible that he might recover a little faster than originally expected." She smiled. Her concern for Bobby was obvious, but she also didn't want to keep on that subject. There was a lot for them to talk about. "How are you? I just realized I didn't ask." "That's good, that's excellent news. I know you have been awfully worried about him," he commented softly. He genuinely was glad that he was going to make a full recovery, and if it was quicker, then all the better. Hopefully he would be more careful in the future.

How was he? There was a clear hesitation before he tried to actually answer. "That's alright, I... I'm..." he stuttered a little, not sure how best to answer. He didn't want to outright lie, but he didn't want to scare her either. "Adjusting," was the best adjective for it he could find.

	Ashley nodded and then she tilted her head a little. She picked up her tea cup and took a sip before saying anything. "Is there anything you're finding particularly difficult to adjust to?" Darcy shook his head lightly, avoiding actually looking at her. He was afraid of getting upset, or of the feeling of overwhelming panic coming back if she looked too concerned or too sympathetic.

He closed his eyes for a moment, took a deep breath, and then decided he was going to have to just plunge right in. "What did your mother say - about our meeting?" he asked her, a little rushed, as if he was afraid he wouldn't ask if he didn't ask fast.

	Ashley took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "She didn't say much, I just know that she wasn't in the best mood when she got home." She cleared her throat. That was putting it lightly. Darcy nodded a little, but he was surprised her mother hadn't listed off every reason she was never to talk to him again. He was glad it wasn't so, but there was something about it that felt like a time bomb.

"She despises me. I'm sorry," he said. He'd really, really wanted to try for her, and he'd got himself all twisted and turned about until he didn't even understand what had gone so wrong. When had the tone changed? Oh - the speedy proposal. It had taken a rapid downhill slide after that.

	Ashley shook her head. "You don't have anything to apologize for." She set her cup down and put a hand on his arm. "You are...so wonderful. When Ashley put her hand on his arm, it was a comfort, but he also couldn't help feeling like he really didn't deserve her comfort.

"No, it was more than that, I think," he admitted, not wanting to downplay it. It would be worse he if shrugged it off, and her mother later revealed more of what had been said. He tried to think back to what exactly had been said. Bits of it kept coming back to haunt him, but a lot of it was confused and garbled because he hadn't really understood quite a lot of what was going on.

"I was way out of my depth," he said after a moment, finally turning to her. He was going to have to be honest, to appeal to her with the truth of it. "I think I might have offended her in every way imaginable, and I still don't entirely understand how I managed it."

	Ashley sighed again. She started to rub his arm gently. That explained her mother's mood a bit. "She can be intimidating." She knew her mother's temper sometimes, but she also tried to understand his side of things. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Yes. The first part, she admitted was designed to be intimidating, so..." he shrugged a little. That bit had at least made sense. He could understand the logic behind it, even if it had put him on edge before they'd even touched on anything more serious.

"After that... well, do you even want an account of it, or shall we just leave it as I'm really not her favourite person, and... don't be surprised if she tells you to stay away from me?"

	Ashley nodded and smiled. "Then we'll leave it. And I won't be surprised if she forbids me from seeing you." She chuckled softly. "Not that it'll do any good." She was an adult, after all. Darcy breathed a sigh of relief at her response. He really didn’t think he could manage to calmly get all the way through the story, and he had the definite feeling that he would end up accidentally offending and fucking it up all over again.

“Good,” he nodded, and gave her hand a little squeeze. “As long as... I don’t make you feel... ashamed, or like you have to change, or... anything negative?”

	Ashley smiled, but then his next statement confused her. She tilted her head and raised an eyebrow. "Why would I feel ashamed?" The rest she understood. “I’m not sure,” he admitted. That whole part of the conversation was a blur, but he did remember that particular accusation. “It is not my intention. Perhaps it is because you dress more conservatively for me,” he suggested, piecing it together from Robert’s explanation mixed with her mother’s fears. “Your mother was concerned that I will make you feel ashamed of your body,” he explained the part that he had understood. He didn’t mention the sexual revolution, whatever the devil that was meant to mean.
