Ashley wasn't as nervous as she thought she'd be. It was a very important conversation they were about to have but she felt confident in the outcome. She was mostly nervous for showing up on his doorstep without any warning. No letter, no phone call, just a knock on the door.

She went only slightly conservative with her outfit. Of course the shirt was only revealing if she removed her jacket. She fully planned to keep the jacket on so he wouldn't be distracted. She also decided to go with her four inch red heels making her only 4 inches shorter than him rather than the usual 8. She wasn't sure why she needed that extra height. Especially since they would most likely be sitting down for most of the conversation.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. No matter what happened, she was going to be okay. With that thought in mind, she knocked on his door.

	Ashley took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "She didn't say much, I just know that she wasn't in the best mood when she got home." She cleared her throat. That was putting it lightly. Darcy nodded a little, but he was surprised her mother hadn't listed off every reason she was never to talk to him again. He was glad it wasn't so, but there was something about it that felt like a time bomb.

"She despises me. I'm sorry," he said. He'd really, really wanted to try for her, and he'd got himself all twisted and turned about until he didn't even understand what had gone so wrong. When had the tone changed? Oh - the speedy proposal. It had taken a rapid downhill slide after that.

	Ashley shook her head. "You don't have anything to apologize for." She set her cup down and put a hand on his arm. "You are...so wonderful. When Ashley put her hand on his arm, it was a comfort, but he also couldn't help feeling like he really didn't deserve her comfort.

"No, it was more than that, I think," he admitted, not wanting to downplay it. It would be worse he if shrugged it off, and her mother later revealed more of what had been said. He tried to think back to what exactly had been said. Bits of it kept coming back to haunt him, but a lot of it was confused and garbled because he hadn't really understood quite a lot of what was going on.

"I was way out of my depth," he said after a moment, finally turning to her. He was going to have to be honest, to appeal to her with the truth of it. "I think I might have offended her in every way imaginable, and I still don't entirely understand how I managed it."

	Ashley sighed again. She started to rub his arm gently. That explained her mother's mood a bit. "She can be intimidating." She knew her mother's temper sometimes, but she also tried to understand his side of things. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Yes. The first part, she admitted was designed to be intimidating, so..." he shrugged a little. That bit had at least made sense. He could understand the logic behind it, even if it had put him on edge before they'd even touched on anything more serious.

"After that... well, do you even want an account of it, or shall we just leave it as I'm really not her favourite person, and... don't be surprised if she tells you to stay away from me?"

	Ashley nodded and smiled. "Then we'll leave it. And I won't be surprised if she forbids me from seeing you." She chuckled softly. "Not that it'll do any good." She was an adult, after all. Darcy breathed a sigh of relief at her response. He really didn’t think he could manage to calmly get all the way through the story, and he had the definite feeling that he would end up accidentally offending and fucking it up all over again.

“Good,” he nodded, and gave her hand a little squeeze. “As long as... I don’t make you feel... ashamed, or like you have to change, or... anything negative?”

	Ashley smiled, but then his next statement confused her. She tilted her head and raised an eyebrow. "Why would I feel ashamed?" The rest she understood. “I’m not sure,” he admitted. That whole part of the conversation was a blur, but he did remember that particular accusation. “It is not my intention. Perhaps it is because you dress more conservatively for me,” he suggested, piecing it together from Robert’s explanation mixed with her mother’s fears. “Your mother was concerned that I will make you feel ashamed of your body,” he explained the part that he had understood. He didn’t mention the sexual revolution, whatever the devil that was meant to mean.

It was reassuring to hear her say it, but he really hated to think that the things he had tried to explain had come across as shaming her, or wanting her to be a pristine flower or whatever it had been.

“Yes, I had noticed,” he admitted, finally giving her a bit of a smile. “It’s just... different. Distracting. I don’t want to make you feel shame. That’s not what it is,” he insisted.

	"I'll definitely tell you." She nodded. Ashley gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and then shifted back just a little. "This is something that I'm known to wear quite often." She took a deep breath and let it out before removing her jacket. The shirt under it was a spaghetti strap camisole. She watched his reaction, ready to put the jacket back on if needed. “Good. Then we need say no more of it,” he agreed. It was better that way. He didn’t want to mention the flirting, or the part where she was talking about gun fights. Not if he didn’t have to. He’d have to explain about the proposal eventually.

But not right now - because right now she was taking her jacket off, and that simple act had Darcy’s heart racing. He didn’t stop himself from properly checking her out - it was entirely her intention after all. God, she was beautiful. Maybe Shepard has a point. He could feel his resolve crumbling. “You’re beautiful,” he told her after a moment of silent contemplation.

Ashley smiled and, of course, blushed at the compliment. She pushed her hair back just a but and sat up a little straighter. There were definitely boobs under than shirt.

"Thank you." She said softly. "I have a lot of this style shirt in varying colors. Do you think you could handle me wearing them a little more regularly?" There was a tiny little part of her that hoped he wouldn't be able to control himself but it was a small part.

	Darcy swallowed nervously, and he was sure he was a couple of shades pinker than normal, but still he gave her a rather speechless nod. “I’m sure I’ll... get used to it eventually,” he said, almost unconvinced. “I cannot promise not to do a lot of staring in the meantime,” he added, because clearly he couldn’t take his eyes off her. 	As she started to cover up again, Darcy reached out to stop her before she had it properly back on. His hands touched bare shoulders, and it made him shiver. It was possibly the most skin-to-skin touching they’d had besides when he had been sick. It was a little more intimate than hand holding. “I’m paying attention,” he insisted after a moment. A tingle ran down her spine when he touched her shoulders. Her mind was suddenly thinking about how it would feel for him to touch other parts and she blushed a bit, even though she knew he didn't know what was going on in her head. She took the jack back off and set it aside.

"I've never felt that I needed to change anything about myself. I just wanted to change a couple of things to help you adjust. To make it easier." She really didn't want his hands to move from her shoulders.

"You have adjusted a couple of things, too, so it's not a one way street. We're meeting in the middle." She looked him in the eye as she said the last part.

Darcy felt glued to her, unwilling to let go again even though she had taken the jacket back off. And he really was listening to her, even if at the same time he was busy watching her lips move. She had such fantastic lips, and when he was close to her like this all he could think about was being permitted to kiss them.

“You’ve made everything a lot easier. You’ve just tried to ease me in rather than giving a shove, and indonappreciate that, you know,” he told her, eyes moving up from her lips to look into her eyes. Oh, God - there was that look again, the same look she’d had in the library. Eyes practically begging him - or was it just his wishful thinking?
