This week's rec ties in with
missjesselle's post below. Like
missjesselle, I was pretty disappointed with
Deathly Hallows. The artist I am reccing today had a completely different experience: she loved the last book in the Potter series to bits. Snape's part in it inspired her to draw a series of illustrations. It took people like her to remind me that my disillusionment with the overall story shouldn't blind me to the opportunities and dramatic elements JKR served us. Canon is a fanficcer and fanartist's paradise :-).
kyla79 is a young professional comics artist who publishes under the name of Mara. Her first comic book,
Clues, was published last year by the small and equally young French publisher
Akileos, which has a special place in my heart because they publish the French translations of such favourites as Eric Shanower's
Age of Bronze and Ted Naifeh's
Courtney Crumrin - but I digress. Those among you who read French might find it worthwhile to check out
Clues, because of its delectable, snarky, hooknosed Inspector Hawkins. Just saying.
kyla79 is one of those artists whose style looks deceptively simple but isn't. She is a good storyteller with a keen eye for composition and atmosphere, and I love what she does with colour. I have to confess that I am not a great fan of digital art, because it often looks cold and lacks texture. kyla79 achieves what I think is a nicely balanced effect by combining pencils, watercolour and Photoshop, using the watercolours to give texture to her digital colouring.
That, and she does a great Snape.
I am reccing the whole bunch of DH pictures at once, because together they tell a story.
Enjoy!
