Thursday Night Out
Who: Cameron and Kurt Wagner
Where: Downtown
When: Thursday evening
What: Cameron steps out after rehearsal
Rating: R-language
Status: Complete

She still hadn't heard if she would be allowed to enter the race, but just in case she had dropped her Austin-Healey off with her mechanic that morning for a quick check. After a shower in the dressing room at the Lincoln Center, she redid her hair and makeup and put on something more stylish than her practice leotard. She could take a cab home later if she needed to.

Even without using any vision enhancements, downtown New York City was a place of bright lights, motion, and people. She walked slowly, looking into windows, observing the activities of all the people around her, getting more of a feel for the world of 1964.

Cameron was unable to access part of her memory - the part where mission parameters were usually stored. Several nights spent reviewing all of the files she could access had given her no clue as to what her mission might be, or if she was just to live in this time line until she was given a mission. It might be that something she would see or here, or a radio transmission, might trigger a memory cascade and bring to her full mission alert. She just didn't know. Not knowing was an unpleasant and unfamiliar sensation.

But part of any mission for an infiltration unit was to establish and maintain a cover identity. Her claim to be Allison Young from Palmdale, California did partially explain her lack of New York mannerisms, but since she had been sent here with learning mode enabled, she was obviously expected to blend in on her own.

So Cameron walked along the sidewalk, listening to bits of conversation, watching how people interacted with each other in New York.

Oh yeah, this was just...

He was fucked, to put it mildly. Kurt was most absolutely, terribly, and certainly fucked. This was like a version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show no one in their right mind could even dream up after a night of eating nothing but Doritos and Taco Bell 'meat.'

1964! And there was no way out. God knows he had tried. He had attempted to teleport away, but even when he was on the edge of an escape it didn't seem to matter. He traveled through the same bizarre dimension he had been through before, a spin cycle of doom, only to end up back here where afro's were in and laptop computers were out. A magical bulletin board, well, that was just the icing on the shit cake.

Kurt was so distracted with his thoughts that he didn't have time to dodge the girl he bumped into along the sidewalk. "Scheiße!" he muttered, more irritated at himself than her - he was wearing the image inducer (luckily it still worked here) because he didn't feel like being stared at or having rocks hurled at him in his demonic-looking form - but he had to be more careful. "I'm so sorry. I'm kind of klutzy, I should come with a helmet and an instruction manual. Are you alright?"

Of course he was from out of town. No New Yorker was that polite.

Cameron started to go into combat mode when somebody bumped into her, and then she realized it was just a typical pedestrian occurance on the crowded sidewalks of New York.

"I'm fine," she started to reply as she ran a passive scan on the person who had run into her. At night she had to be careful using her active scan so that people around her wouldn't notice he blue glow from her eyes. She immediately noticed the unusual energy signature of this... man? Some sort of a hologram, but he felt solid. Curious.

She replayed their collision in extreme slow-motion. There was something off about the way this person felt on impact.

She put on her Allison smile and looked up. "I'm not as fragile as I look. You didn't hurt me." Her energy scan complete, she continued, "I hope you didn't hurt yourself. You didn't seem to know where you were going. Are you another one of the new people that are turning up here? Some of them call themselves castaways."

Alright, now back up the garbage truck a second.

Sure, the girl looked normal. Upon first glance, it didn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary in terms of appearance - pretty girl, easy on the eyes, whatever. But that collision had smarted a bit, like ramming into a door because you were too drunk to actually see the exit and misjudged the distance.

Not that this ever happened to our virginal and sober blue friend here.

"No, I..." Kurt paused, a hand running through his mess of hair. "I'm okay." It wasn't like he was going to ask why she felt like a brick wall. Maybe she worked out and took steroids - it happened to Chinese gymnasts, it could happen to this brunette too. "Except for that whole castaway thing. I guess I would be one of them, which must make you one too." You know, since she brought it up and all. "I'm Kurt. Kurt Wagner." He saved her the schpeel about the Incredible Nightcrawler.

Judging by her attire, she seemed ready to disco the night away. "I actually had no idea where I was going, but did you?" he asked.

Cameron wanted to run an active scan, but didn't dare with the night time lighting. This person sounded human enough; not a synthisized voice, but he hadn't felt entire human when he ran into her.

"Not a castaway," she kept the smile on her face, "but not a native. My name is Allison Young, I'm from Palmdale, California. Where are you from?"

"I just got out of rehersal - I'm with the New York Civic Ballet - and wanted to see more of the city than just the inside of the theatre. I was people watching and window shopping with no real destination in mind."

Cameron looked Kurt up and down. "Last time I went out at night I met someone who was a castaway too. He wore an odd costume and called himself Batman." She decided to try the naive girl from out of town routine again and see where it got her. "Do you wear a costume too? Batman said he was a hero, not a criminal. What about you? You felt a little odd when you bumped into me. Are you wearing a costume under your street clothes?"

"Nice to meet you, Ally. I'm from Germany, mostly, but I moved to the States just recently." Yes, she had a nickname now - Kurt was fond of giving people nicknames whether they wanted one or not. "Not a castaway but not a native," he repeated, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "That's cryptic. And no, I don't wear a costume. But speaking of feeling odd..." Wait, should he resent that? What was odd about blue fur and a tail?? Er. "You seem to fit that category yourself, no offense. As for what I am wearing under my clothes, I am not that kind of guy but I appreciate your forwardness. I get that we're in the era of free love and all but it'll take a couple of pints of Kristallweizen for me to divulge that." Though with that appraising look he just got, he felt kind of violated! How rude! Oh wait, he didn't actually mind.

"Nice to meet you too, Kurt." More meaningless human polite words. "Germany. That explains the bad word I heard you say when you bumped into me."

Cameron let her smile slip a little. "I seem odd to you? I suppose I do spend a lot of time in rehearsal and performing. Ballet takes a lot of practice and training." Not that she did with her non-human abilities, but she was always careful to emulate the random errors of the other dancers when on stage. "Its why I try to get out when I have the chance."

Her smile came back involuntarily - she was feeling an emotion, not acting in a programmed mode, how odd - reacting to what he said. "I was just wondering if I had accidentally met another costumed hero tonight." Or had he deliberately bumped into her? Did he have information for her that he couldn't transmit verbally while out in public? "If that was an invitation to buy you a drink... I suppose I can do that, but doesn't it usually work the other way around? Did you bump into me because you couldn't think of any other way to meet me? I don't know much about German beers, but there are several bars not far from here."

She looked him up and down again, trying to discover if he was wearing a disguise of some sort without using an active scan. "You are old enough to get into a bar, aren't you?"

"Oh, and I do not care for diminutive nicknames." Actually, she had felt something akin to pleasure in her neural network when John Connor had called her 'Cam'. This person was not John Connor, even if she was intrigued by him.

Note that Kurt pronounced it 'alley' instead of 'ally' as in the type to form an allegiance, but did that still count as diminutive? Maybe he could just change the spelling to Ali? More questions, anyone? "I don't care for a lot of things, schatzi," he said, grinning as per usual. "Like...being in a time warp. But we make do."

He tucked his thumbs in the front pockets of his jeans, and maybe if he posed like he was on the cover of GQ he would warrant all of these body scans. Mein Gott! "Yes, I just turned twenty-one," the half-demon noted, though his tone suggested that he thought it was silly that the drinking age in the States was placed at such an odd age. "It's usually the other way around, but since you're the one asking me what's under my clothes...well. I can get the second round, I guess." It had been a good night as far as work went - people must have been feeling extra generous, or perhaps it was the location, that enabled him to pick up a decent amount of cash during his round of typical aerobatics and street performances.

So he set off, glad to have direction and a goal in mind: Beer. "And I'll teach you all you need to know about German beer. It will make up for me not being a costumed hero, and for me just being distracted and bumping into you. I had no other agenda, sorry to say."

"You can make do if you like." Cameron made a facial grimace she had been told was 'cute'. "I don't like the nickname Alley. I am not a cat."

"No agenda," she said softly. "How disappointing."

When Kurt tucked his hands in his pocket and set off she spoke up. "Excuse me? You certainly aren't from New York, and I think not from 1964. It is bad enough you want me to drink a fattening beverage." She crooked her arm. "It is customary for for a gentleman to escort a lady, not take off and leave her trotting behind him in her high-heel shoes. I get enough aerobic exercise dancing, thank you."

Well, hell. Kurt almost tripped all over himself as he was jerked back by an invisible puppet string. For someone so agile, he really was acting like he had spaghetti noodles for limbs this evening. "Oh, sorry!" he immediately apologised, face turning a lovely shade of fire-engine red. He offered his arm with a grand flourish. "Do you not want to drink a fattening beverage? You look pretty good, I'm sure the calories won't kill you."

Was he supposed to have an agenda? Like, 'yes, I plan to get you sloshed and grope you behind a building in a dark alley, Ally'? Curses! He was so bad at...not being awkward.

"So, you're into ballet? How's that working out for you?" He had met a few ballerinas during his time with the circus, so he at least knew what some of the fancy jumps and other things were called. Sort of.

Cameron took the offered arm, disappointed to be able to tell nothing more from the touch than that the man was muscular and solid. "I do not want to drink a fattening beverage. Beer is fattening, and has too low an alcohol content. Vodka martini, please."

"Ballet is working out quite well. I am in the cast for ther performance of Harlequinade, and understudy the two primas. What about you? What do you do when you aren't running into odd women in the street? You don't look like one of the usual New York office workers." She used her free hand to pat the arm linked with hers. "Too many muscles."

"Aaaaaaaalright, you can look all classy drinking your vodka martini while I guzzle beer," Kurt acquiesced, as if it were such a hardship to do so. The grin, however, probably gave away his true feelings on the matter. "So I'm guessing you can hold your alcohol pretty well, Alley Cat."

Understudy, huh! Now all she had to do was knock out the lead and - oh, that was probably a bad idea. Though the mention of his muscles sort of got him off of that train of thought and he probably turned that beet red colour again. "Nope, not an office worker," Kurt laughed. He was probably a bit too hyperactive to be a cubicle rat. "I'm...an acrobat, you could say? A performer. So we have that in common, I guess. I knew some ballerinas so I know how difficult it is."

Cameron began to lose her smile, her face getting harder, more still. "I told you I don't care for diminutive names, and that I am not a cat. It seems that when men ignore what I want and try to press things the way they want, that I end up having to damage them. Some men never seem to understand it when I warn them."

"If you were a fellow performer, you would know that our name on the sign out front means a lot to us. Who are you, really? What are you?"

Scheiße again! Kurt was really beginning to think this girl was not from around here, or that she was a serial killer. Either one. "You don't need to damage me," he insisted, and tried not to laugh. This was not funny! No. It most certainly was not. "Allison."

The questions, reminiscent of what he assumed The Spanish Inquisition would be like only with less torture (for now), threw him off a bit. "I really am a performer," he said, sounding confused. "Look, you've obviously got a lot of secrets tucked up in your ballerina tutu and you're entitled to them so why should I spill my guts, hmm?"

"Allison." Cameron began to smile again. "That wasn't so hard, was it? It seems you are trainable."

"A performer of sorts? Street? Circus? Every woman has secrets. What makes you more than most?"

She patted Kurt's arm again. "You are the one with the big secrets." She sighed, then continued, "Sorry if I came on too strong, but names are a big thing with me."

Trainable? Kurt was not going to fetch a bone for Alley Cat Allison, feisty as she was, and resisted the urge to poke her with his tail. Which was safely tucked away and not going to make an appearance now, thanks. "Circus and street performer," he clarified, then countered, "What makes you more than most? You'll have to explain why names are a big thing. Hopefully that's not a secret too."

When they got to the entrance of the bar, he went ahead a little to open the door for her, waiting for the lady to go first.

"I... Never knew my parents," Cameron glanced around as if looking for other listeners. "Allison Young is the first name I ever had. My adoptive family called me Cameron, Cameron Baum. I can't have children of my own, so my name is all I have."

She smiled softly at Kurt. "Is that a big enough secret for you?"

Her smile grew brighter when Kurt held the door for her. Nodding as she passed him, Cameron headed for a booth near the back. Before she sat down she reached into her purse and dropped two twenties on the table.

"What is your big secret? she asked as she sat down.

"It'll do for now." Kurt returned the smile, electric blues crinkling at the corners with the action. He joined Allison at the table, scooting into the booth and getting comfortable, with only the slightest glance at the image inducer watch on his wrist. All systems go. He didn't want it to malfunction and cause her to run out of the bar screaming.

He idly rubbed away a dried smear of something that half obscured the fine print on the menu of Happy Hour Specials, including appetisers which...probably were not very appetising. "I...never knew my parents either," he said, offering that up as a secret. "I'm still looking for my mother. Does that count or no?"

Cameron returned Kurt's smile as he sat. "See, we're not that much different."

She ordered her martini from the waitress and let Kurt order for himself. The beer choices didn't seem that good, but she did not drink beer herself and didn't know what he would like.

"Are you with a circus now? I've only seen a circus once - it looked like an exciting place to work. Or are you here in New York to look for your mother?"

She leaned back in the booth as if relaxing. She knew her biological body was what was described as attractive to men. Maybe Kurt would open up more if she seemed to enjoy his company more. So far, he hadn't given her much real data to process.

The beer choices were actually not too stellar, but he recognised a few names and ultimately just went with a Heinekin. Oh yes, good ol' Heine! Kurt really didn't drink that much, however. He really shouldn't drink. Or smoke or...sit across from pretty girls in bars and have impure thoughts about them. He really should be in Mass, like what good Catholics do. Perhaps finding a church would be third on his To Do List.

Or not.

"Well, I'm not with a circus anymore," he explained. "I left when I came to the States. I've been in New York for a bit just not the city during this...time period. So right now I'm here because I somehow ended up here but I am looking for my mother."

And speaking of data, he needed to process some about her too. What do women like to talk about? Kurt would assume things like shoes, their goals, and their hopes and dreams. "You're here alone too?" he asked, the 'too' sort of meaning that, yes, he was basically fending for himself here.

Cameron nodded. "I was reading the postings on the bulletin boards the other day. People seem to be coming here from all sorts of places and times. One said he was here from the 51st century. Maybe I should have asked when you are from, not where?"

"I don't even have my adopted family any more. Most of them moved on from California. I have my little apartment and my car and ballet. Some night I go out and try to get a feel for New York, but there is just me most of the time."

"What are you going to do while you look for your mother?" She sampled her drink with satisfaction. Alcohol didn't affect her artificial neural network, but a sufficient amount did provide a sort of cushion between her mechanical and biological parts. "Will you go back into show business or get some other sort of job?"

"When? Yeah, that is a weird question," he laughed, picking up the beer bottle and taking a sip. Mmm, piss and bread! Such a delightful combination. "I'm from 2010...and my adopted family's back in Germany, presumably." Or rather some weren't even born yet and some were very young right at the moment, which was weird to think about.

Kurt shifted the bottle back and forth between his cupped hands, thinking. "I'd like to get more of a job than what I have now. I also need a place to stay, so I guess a 60s apartment is on the agenda too." Toasting the girl across from him, he took another sip. "Well, now you have a friend to get a feel for New York with so congratulations, schatzi." Hopefully she didn't mind German pet names. 'Sweetheart' wasn't very insulting.

"Fourty six years is a long way from home. Do you know what happened to bring you here?

Surprised by Kurt's words, Cameron looked down at her drink. "I don't have any friends here. Most of the dancers don't like me because I'm good enough to understudy both prima parts. I don't really know anybody else except for my mechanic and banker, and they are both old, almost obsolete. I am entered in that charity race this weekend just because I thought I might meet people there."

"Now I just met you and you say you are my friend and call me sweetheart. Are men from the future that forward, or are you just teasing me?" She sighed. "I probably wouldn't be that good a sweetheart for you anyway. I told you I can't have children."

Children?

Kurt nearly spit out a mouthful of beer. It sloshed down the wrong pipe and he coughed. "No, I..." Cough, hack, wheeze. "I'm not looking to have children. Please don't feel as if you need to have any with me. That's not what I meant."

Oh God, children? Blue, demonic-looking ballerina children? What even?!

He was fine. "I have no idea what happened to bring me here, personally. I'm hoping to figure that out soon. What do you mean your mechanic and banker are obsolete?" he asked, eyebrow lifting damn near to the ceiling. "When are you from?"

"I thought all men wanted to settle down and have a family? You do like girls, don't you?"

Cameron let her smile grow again andjchuckled ruefully. "Oh, I was trying to be funny. I guess I'm not very good at telling jokes. My mechanic doesn't like the Jaguar racing motor I had installed in my Austin-Healey. Says it is too newfangled. My banker only wants me to invest in safe old stocks like General Motors instead of new technologies."

She shrugged. "My driver's license says I am 22, so I came from the past. But I've been a professional dancer for two years, so does that make me two? And I've only been in New York for two months, so that makes me just a baby as far as New Yorkers are concerned."

"Wha - yes, I like girls. I don't want to settle down and have a family right this second though," Kurt said, jokingly clutching his chest as if the idea had given him a heart attack - once he could get air to his lungs again, that is. Yeah, right, he did not believe that this cute little ballerina was really just looking to do some saute's and arabesque's here in the city and that was it. Especially after half the city seem to suddenly teleport in from some other bizarre location. "Where were you before you came to New York?" he wanted to know.

"I know, but..." He scratched at his eyebrow with the tip of the beer bottle, thinking. Maybe he was just being overly paranoid. It came from years of hiding his true form unless he was trying to make money. In the circus, people just thought Kurt was in possession of a really awesome blue devil costume. "Nevermind. You seem to be taking it well though, is all I'm saying. I mean, that people are traveling through time and space and suddenly appear here. You're not at all...concerned?"

"Concerned?" Cameron tilted her head a little to the side as she considered how to reply. "I think there have been costumed crime fighters and criminals here for years. Where did they all come from once?"

Her smile grew wider. "And I lived in Los Angeles for a while. La-La Land. Freeways and Disneyland and movie stars. You want to talk about odd?"

"Even if I were to meet one of the bad guys," she shrugged again, "I'm pretty good at taking care of myself. Everyone I've met here so far seems to range from pretty nice to mostly harmless." Of course this man was still wearing some sort of holographic disguise. "Don't you trust me? I'm just a dancer."

Frowning a little, Cameron picked up her new drink and tossed it down after the first. "Waste of Vermouth, but everyone looks at me funny if I order straight vodka."

"Yeah, but the masked heroes probably all didn't come here from another dimension or whatever," Kurt pointed out, fingers wiggling as if that was supposed to represent strange and mystical things. He picked up the second beer bottle and took a long, long swig. "Movie stars are odd but I don't know. I think all of this - " A wave around the bar, meaning his presence in the swingin' 60s, "...is just a little weirder."

He swallowed with a gulp then added, teasingly, "Trust you? Well, we'll see about that. Considering you told me you can't spawn my children. That was pretty much the deal-breaker right there." Another large sip poured down his throat and he was almost struggling to keep up - well, he certainly wasn't kidding when he postulated that this girl could hold her alcohol. She was like a machine.

Cameron ordered another round. Maybe Kurt would talk more about himself if he got drunk. Besides, she wasn't even beginning to feel the alcoholic disconnect yet.

"So the truth starts to come out?" She tossed her head, making her hair fly to one shoulder. "You just ran into me because you thought I am good looking, but you only have the most shallow intentions? No different from most men. Here I had hoped for more." Her original Allison personality had a high school flirtation subprogram. This didn't seem like a bad time to make use of it.

OHWOWHEWASTOTALLYKIDDING. Poor Kurt hoped he didn't get the glass thrown at his face! "No, really, I think you're very pretty but I assure you that...uh..." Where was that beer? Maybe he should go for something harder. Like lighter fluid. "I'm not like most men."

Cameron began to bristle at the 'in the kitchen' remark, knowing it was expected, but then he was apologizing.

"Not like most men? It certainly sounded like most men. Or do you mean the way you are wearing some sort of disguise?" Cameron nodded toward the oddly-shaped hand print in the moisture on the beer bottle Kurt had been toying with.

"Don't worry, schatzi, it's called a joke. I make them on occasion." Automatically, Kurt withdrew his hands from the table, from the bottle, and folded his arms tightly across his chest. Oh, of course. This was why he should just stay in a box somewhere and never come out.

He bristled too, on the defence slightly. "You don't want to go there. Not right now. It's not..." Clearly, body language indicated he didn't want to discuss that in a public place, hence the point of the 'disguise' anyway. "How did you even..." It couldn't have just been the handprint. She was looking. She knew.

"How did you know?"

"Its a very good disguise. I could tell something was there but couldn't see through it."

Knowing that nobody in the bar could see her face except for Kurt, Cameron switched on her active scan, and then quickly switched it off. She knew Kurt would be able to see the blue glow of her eyes plainly in the dim light.

"Some of us can just see a little more than others."

"She wrinkled her nose at Kurt. "Blue. Matches my eyes, don't you think?"

"All this time we were talking, and you just didn't ask the right questions."

"Blue's a good colour. I happen to think so," Kurt laughed sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck, head dropping a little like he was embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I just...I didn't want to pry by asking questions and..."

He sucked in a breath of air, raising his eyes to look at her now. Count to five, exhale. Done. "I'm a mutant," he mumbled, wincing at the word. Kurt didn't care what Charles Xavier said - running around loudly announcing everyone what you were was unwise, despite any hopes of a peaceful co-existence with humans. "What...who are you? Can you tell me?"

Cameron nodded. "I didn't do a DNA scan, that takes a while to process. So I couldn't tell anything about your ancestry. I understand the disguise; humans tend to fear that which is different."

She put on her big Allison smile again. "I'm really only about a quarter human," she admitted quietly. "If I told you anything about the rest I would probably have to kill you. That would be an unpleasant end for the evening."

Cameron looked into Kurt's eyes. "Why the embarrassment when I saw through your disguise? Is society still that hard on the different in the future?"

Well then. Kurt was awfully glad he hadn't asked the right questions, if threats to kill him were the answers! "It's okay, I...uh. Yeah, we don't need to do death tonight, in any way, shape, or form."

He shrugged, his own eyes - oceanic, with the slightest touch of green in this form - thoughtful, maybe even a little sad. "It's better, I think," he finally said. "But it's still...not good. It's still kept quiet, but you can tell. You can hear the hushed whispers and the scorn. I was chased by a mob in Bavaria because...I'm not as pretty as you, let's just say, I probably do need a disguise."

"I really have to work on the delivery of my jokes, don't I? I so need to get out more. I really am with the Civic Ballet company and it really does take up a lot of my time."

Cameron sat back in the booth and sighed. "In my timeline, I came from 2027. There was a master computer that was using machines to try to eliminate humanity. It didn't matter race or color or anything, as long as you were an organic lifeform, everyone was a brother or sister."

"You do," Kurt agreed, the ever-present grin slipping back onto his face. It was rare that it disappeared for more than .5 seconds. He just was not into the emo lifestyle and thank shit it hadn't manifested in this decade yet. "Need to work on your joke delivery and get out more. I'm sure I can help with both."

Finally unfolding his stance where tendons on his arms were visibly strained, Kurt relaxed. "Eliminate humanity? Sounds familiar," he said, thinking of the Brotherhood. "I know some of us believe that humanity deserves to be eliminated but I don't. Mass genocide is not the solution." Maybe he was sounding too much like Miss Universe. He knocked back the last of the beer.

"So your...timeline? How is it different? You're technically from the future or no?"

"Where can I buy a life if I don't have one?"

A sort of sadness came over Cameron. As more time went by with no prior programming, she was feeling more and more of Allison's emotions. It was very peculiar.

"I'm from a timeline of 2027. We won that war, ended the timeline in the past, but did something that started the war at a later date in the new timeline. Its all confusing what with jumping back and forth in time and all that."

She smiled at Kurt. "I didn't make it all the way through the last fight. I woke up here with a short list of contacts and no new mission assignment. I think we won, but I don't know why I was sent here."

"Not the gas station. Not the department store...maybe you just create your own life?" Kurt reached across the table and playfully nudged her hand with his demon talon, sort of a 'cheer up' gesture. "I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually, right? We all will. Hopefully." He would try to look at the bright side of things; envisioning their doom as the worst-case scenario didn't seem very productive.

Cameron finished off her latest drink and thought for a few milliseconds - a long time for a machine mind. She reached into her purse and pulled out a plain white business card which she slid across the table to Kurt.

"My name and telephone number. If you aren't bothered by what I am, I'm not bothered by what you are. You could call me."

Her smile was thin, but honest. "Maybe I was sent here so I could try to have a life."

Kurt reached out and took the card, tucking it into his pocket with a smile - one he hoped didn't look too stupid. It wasn't everyday he ran into someone who wouldn't be freaked out about his blue self, creepy yellow eyes, and tail. Though the tail was cool, and handy to reach things when he was feeling lazy. "I will call you, how about that?"

He canted his head slightly, listening to that theory. "Maybe," he agreed, flipping a coaster as someone was drunkenly serenaded for their birthday at the bar. It didn't seem like such a bad fate.

"I think I would like that." She waved to the waitress for another round.

"Do you have any leads for a job yourself, or even a place to stay?" Cameron smiled at Kurt. "If you are going to be calling me, I suppose I could help you out a little."

"Well, no. Not really...but..." Kurt trailed off, realising that anything he could say would just sound silly. So better stick with the truth. Not that he was one to lie anyway, but it sounded so much better to say that he was a millionaire and lived in a penthouse. "I'm still looking. Why, do you know of any places hiring around here? I read in the paper that there's a rush on employment." Probably due to all the other time-traveling folk. Grrrrreat.

Cameron, working by touch, slipped a hand into her purse and felt for the small secret compartment sewn into the side.

"The World's Fair at Flushing Meadows," she nodded. "Over a square mile, with hundreds of exhibitions. I went to see the audio-animatronics that Disney studios did for different companies, but I noticed Berlin has a very popular display. There are hundreds of entertainers and thousands of people working at the fair."

Having found what she wanted in her purse, Cameron folded the two $100 bills into her hand. She pulled her hand out of her purse and cupped the money to the table top, sliding her hand toward Kurt with only a corner of a bill exposed. "I said I had contacts. During the wars we sent temporal engineers scattered back in time to set up caches - mostly safe deposit boxes or letters left with lawyers. If you want, consider this a loan until you get a paycheck."

"Oh, ja, that sounds great. I would like something like that," Kurt nodded, smiling at the prospect. He was about to thank Allison for the tip when all of a sudden, she was reaching toward him with something very distinctly green. Two something's, in fact. Kurt's eyes nearly bugged out of his head, but he managed to stay calm and, with a gulp, shyly took the offering. It would be rude to refuse, and this was probably one of the nicest things anyone ever did for him. "Thank you," he said sincerely. "It is a loan, because I will pay you back - I promise." He was good for his word. "And if you ever need anything, well. I'll do my best to help."

Another unfamiliar wave of emotion came over Cameron. Startled, she looked down at their hands on the table top for a moment.

"I... have contacts. What I don't have is friends. I suppose I'm a lot like you - people find out I'm only part human and they are afraid of me. So I pretend to be less than I am."

She really was a lot like him - in a lot of different ways, whateverwhatever night vision be damned. Why would he care that she could see he was a hologram? Pffffttt! Kurt could honestly say he hadn't ever come across someone with this particular, er, make-up before but what the hell. There was no reason to avoid her or treat her like she had the plague. "Well, now you can say you have a friend," he replied with a nod of his curly head. "I'm not afraid of you. Trust me."

What a fantastic pair of BFFs!
